He adds: “The world faces an uncertain next six to 18 months. The sub-prime banking crisis will have flow-through effects to all parts of the global economy as loans become harder and harder to get.” But Neill, a professor at IESE business school, a leading MBA institution, adds: “We believe that governments are taking the appropriate action to bring liquidity back to world economies and allow good businesses the access to credit which they require to invest and grow. We will work hard on developing strong, safe, robust operational processes and will be building a solid team over the next year, while positioning ourselves for strong growth as economic confidence returns during 2010.” Taxijet’s target is to operate its own fleet of 30 aircraft in Spain by 2013. “We expect to fly each aircraft between 500 and 800 hours per year, two to three hours a day. We will have five pilots per aircraft so there will be 150 pilots by 2013,” Neill adds. The company, which also acts as commercial agent for a Citation II and two Citation Is based in Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, currently operates an Eclipse 500 and a Maule. “We have always bought new aircraft direct from Eclipse Aviation. However this may change in future as we need to bring new aircraft onstream faster than the factory is able to provide delivery slots.” Neill says: “We will initially establish bases in Barcelona, further developing our maintenance base at Sabadell airport, and Madrid, Continued on page 13 Job of the Month Captains – Learjet 55/60 FAI rent-a-jet AG See page 15 Air Four to expand fleet and bases in 2009 page 3 Silver Bird adds ForLearjet details of how to enter, page see page fourth 4 3. Twin Star will provide alternative to tedious journeys by rail Poland’s Direct Fly, in collaboration with UK-based air charter broker One Charter, is basing a Twin Star DA-42 at Oxford airport for air taxi operations. Its target clientele will include disillusioned longer distance first-class rail travellers. “It is the first Twin Star to be based at a UK airport for air charter and Direct Fly will fly the aircraft under its newly acquired EU operations certificate,” says Air Charter ceo Mike Ryan. The new build, four-seat composite aircraft is designed for three passengers and a pilot. With a cruise performance of 188 mph it combines outstanding safety, excellent economics and is environmentally friendly and fuel efficient, Ryan says. “You travel at Formula 1 speeds but achieve typically 25 miles per gallon. The aircraft is ideally suited for flights up to 350-400 miles, but has a range of 897 nm.” The DA-42 aircraft can operate at night and in IFR conditions and is fitted with Garmin G1000 avionics. Direct Fly launched as a regional airline flying domestic routes in Mike Ryan: low prices. Poland using the Saab 340. The company is 100 per cent owned by aviation investment specialist AerFinance plc which launched an IPO on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in February 2008. Ryan says One Charter will be marketing the aircraft to its clientele throughout the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, and to destinations within reach of the UK in continental Europe. One Charter will also offer positioning flights to other, smaller airports such as Blackbushe and Fairoaks in Surrey, plus Cranfield and Stapleford in north London. Charter prices will be generally lower than the Piper Seneca on most runs and, to date, typically the lowest cost air taxi offering in the UK, Ryan says. For example, one way flights from Oxford Airport to the Channel Islands based on three passengers will be available for a total of £895 – “less than £300 per passenger.” Ryan says: “In this current economic climate, clients are thinking about whether or not to charter for short distances. With the Twin Star we are not only offering the lowest price aircraft for timepressed executives, but we will appeal to those who want to respect the environment too.” He points out that it takes typically two railway station changes and a journey of well over five hours to get from Oxford to Newcastle at a standard first class return rail fare of £416. “On the Twin Star, three passengers can be flown there in just over an hour and a half at a cost of £430 per passenger.” page 6 SPECIAL FOCUSES Charter review of Austria NOVEMBER 2008 page 12 For fuel, ground services and all your trip arrangements CONTACT dispatch@avcard.com Strong demand in Italy boosts Aliven fleet Italy’s Aliven is expanding its fleet to 10 aircraft to meet rising demand for management and charter services. Commander Cittadini Mauro, accountable manager, says there are plans to add further super midsize and then intercontinental capacity to the operator’s growing small and midsize fleet. Aliven, which owns four of its aircraft outright, reserves its managed aircraft for owner use for 50 per cent of flying time and charters them out for the other 50 per cent. Deliveries mean it will be operating three CJ3s, two CJ2s and a CJ1 by the end of this year as well as a Hawker 700A and a Hawker 900, a Citation 560XL and a Beechcraft 400. Aliven, which was launched under its own AOC in 1994, expects to further increase the size of its fleet over the next few years. “We started with small aircraft and have added midsize capacity,” says Cittadini. “There is a growing demand for longer range aircraft with bigger cabins and we will expand to service it. The market in Italy is extremely buoyant with business and leisure demand in Europe and further afield.” Project2 24/10/08 2:46 pm Page 1 Page 03 27/10/08 10:58 am Page 3 EUROPEAN BUSINESS AIR NEWS NOVEMBER 2008 3 Air Four plans to expand fleet, bases and services in 2009 Leopoldo Guidi, marketing manager (right) with financial controller Paola Cecilia Benvegnù. Air Four, which has a presence on a virtual world (EBAN February 2008), began as a start-up project scheduled for launch during the second quarter of 2008. However the launch plans were adapted when an unspecified business aviation company in Italy came up for sale. “By entering the market in this way, we had the opportunity to start earlier and to remove a possible competitor,” says Peralda. “We felt that, if we did not acquire the company, whoever did would become a competitor armed with the existing customer portfolio. Guidi points out: “Italy is strategically placed in the centre of the Mediterranean, it has a strong tourist appeal, and it has the advantage of being an intermediate point for east-bound flights to Russia and the Balkan region.” Charter demand continues to be 80 per cent for business but Guidi believes there is development potential in the luxury travel leisure sector. UK company acquires 400XPs UK-based property developer and investment company ISIS Group has ordered ten Hawker 400XPs. The order marks ISIS Group’s initial aircraft purchase for their new investment in the growing Indian aviation industry – Aviators India based in Bangalore. Delivery dates for five of the Hawker 400XPs are planned during 2009, with the remaining five aircraft to be delivered in 2010. Aviators India is scheduled to commence charter services for ISIS Group in the second half of 2009. Headed by md Arun Sharma, Aviators India has been in business for 14 years with wide experience in charter operations and the marketing of aviation products and services. Hawker Beechcraft says the total value of the contract with options exceeds US$70 million. Dubai-based Empire Aviation Group (EAG) is expanding its regional network. Fahd Travels has become EAG’s representative sales agent (RSA) for Qatar and will market private jet charter services. Paras Dhamecha, EAG executive director, says: “The agreement with Fahd Travels is the second RSA agreement we have signed – the first was with Luxury Travel by Dnata in 2008 – and marks our first step towards creating a new regional business presence for the company across the Middle East and beyond. We are actively looking to extend this network within the Gulf Cooperation Council countries before the end of 2008. Qatar is an increasingly important market for private aviation services including executive jet charter.” Fahd Al-Darwish, md of Fahd Travels, says: “We believe this new working relationship will help develop the local and regional market for private jet charter services for which there is increasing demand in Qatar.” He adds: “We are very confident that we can service and grow the local client base.” EAG manages seven aircraft, six of which are available for charter, and expects the fleet to grow to ten by the end of 2008. Italy’s Air Four expects to boost its fleet by at least six aircraft in 2009 and expand business in Russia and the Middle East. “Our new aircraft will be positioned in Milan where the demand is stronger,” says ceo Mario Peralda, “but perhaps one will be dedicated to the south of Italy to serve southern customers.” Air Four also plans to operate from new bases. “Olbia, during summer time, will surely be an important point of departure in Italy,” says Peralda. “Eastern markets are growing faster and we are planning to position new aircraft by creating operational bases in Russia and in Arabia where the Italian style has a strong appeal and we should attract further customers.” Peralda expects the delivery of two new Learjet 45s at the beginning of 2009. “Two managed aircraft will also join our fleet in the next few months, one light jet and one heavy jet, and we are in negotiations for two further aircraft,” he adds. The new arrivals will augment Air Four’s large current fleet which includes a 13-seat Global Express, a Challenger 604, a seven-seat Hawker 400XP, an eight-seat Learjet 45, a sixseat Learjet 40, a seven-seat Learjet 31 and a five-seat Citation I. “We own the only Bombardier service facility in the south of Europe,” Peralda says. “Our charter fleet consists predominantly of Learjets and our customers are happy with the Learjet 40 and 45 as the range and cabin size are ideal for their typical needs.” At Jet Connections we offer the perfect solution to your aircraft management needs. RAE says: “The performance improves on the old four-bladed propellers and the maintenance costs are much lower due to the new materials. A significant reduction of vibration inside the cabin now delivers jet comfort with its new five bladed propellers.” EASA certification is planned for February 2009 with certification by CAA and FAA also expected soon. RAE says it will be the first operator of the Metro to convert its whole fleet of four aircraft to the new five bladed propellers. LHR CDG FRA AMS ZRH DME AWD Snow and ice. The Learjet fleet is expanding to meet rising demand. Silver Bird adds fourth Learjet and gets ready for G450 and G550 Germany’s Silver Bird Charterflug is acquiring a fourth Learjet, a 45XR, to meet rising international charter demand. Peter Döllner, md and founder, says: “What we would like to achieve first and foremost with the new Learjet 45XR is to further satisfy the needs of our business travellers for a greater cruising range and speed.” The 45XR, he points out, can carry up to eight passengers non-stop on routes such as Moscow to Paris or from Rome or London to Dubai with just one stopover. “But with a maximum non-stop cruising range of 1,970 nm on average or around four flying hours, all destinations within Europe can be reached without a stopover.” Döllner says attractions included a maximum speed of 535 mph. “Apart from good dynamics and speed, passengers also enjoy comfort. The 45XR has been completely refitted by the manufacturer. There are generous, Silver Bird’s pilots include Sergej Kolbassow. The company, which is focused on the long and ultra long range segment, has also ordered four more jets for delivery within two years. Executive Airlines says it selected the Global Express because it has a cabin of “unprecedented comfort” and an interior configuration that enables 12 passenger seats to be arranged in club, conference and divan divisions including two individual seats. “Close to the pilots’ cabin, the crew has its own toilet and its own rest cabin,” it adds. “The Global Express can easily cover destinations such as Madrid-Hong Kong or MadridBuenos Aires and offers state-ofthe-art communications, enabling passengers to enjoy their flight time either relaxing or holding business meetings with complete privacy.” and a microwave, as well as a separate washroom amenity to make flights as pleasant and comfortable as possible. An APU ensures pleasant temperatures as passengers board the plane.” Silver Bird can also provide an in-flight attendant. Learjet demand, Döllner says, is rising. “There has been strong demand for the Learjet 45 delivered recently and all the indications are that it will be the same for the 45XR,” says Döllner. “There will be further expansion of the fleet this year and next year. The company is expecting the delivery of a Learjet 60 and then a G450 and a G550.” The 45XR joins a 40XR, a 45 and a 55. “The 55 and 45 have been completely refurbished and offer extremely attractive interior designs,” says Döllner. All the aircraft in the expanded fleet will be based at the Bremen headquarters where the company was set up in 1994. Zagreb’s newly-launched charter company, which uses the brand name Id Jet, expects a new CJ2+ to come into service in April and reports that business is expanding rapidly. “We expected a growing amount of business from eastern Europe based on an expansion of our Ivadom brokerage business,” says Lekic. “However, we have been pleasantly surprised by the increasing volumes of business that are coming to us from countries including Switzerland, France and Italy.” Id Jet: Ready for take-off. Iva Rogovic Lekic and ground operations manager Domagoj Vodanovic report a rising tide of business in Croatia. Lekic, who began her career in aviation as a pilot, has long believed that there were opportunities in the Croatian aviation market for a business aviation company. “We started as brokers but were always ready to launch at the right time. Being the first operator in Croatia has its advantages, and we aim to establish our company with a good reputation before joining the EU. There is tremendous potential.” Lekic reports that demand is for leisure as well as business trips. Id Jet plans to fly between 600 and 700 hours in its first year and then look at expanding the fleet, possibly with an XLS. Expanding Gainjet adds UK sales arm ProAir achieves new sports goals ProAir reports growing sports charter business after signing an agreement that makes it the exclusive partner of HRG Sports, the sports specialist division of HRG Hogg Robinson Group. “In the first six months of the year ProAir have welcomed on board the elite of German football including the players and officials of Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfL Wolfsburg, Hertha BSC Berlin, 1. FC Nürnberg, and the Austrian Championship runners-up Red Bull Salzburg,” says business development manager Markus Ciravenga. ProAir, official partner for flights to football’s UEFA Cup and Champions League games, will provide services for HRG Sports Frankfurt, Liga Travel, B.E.S.T. Borussia Euro Lloyd Sports Travel, BaySports Travel, FC Bayern Tours and Euro Lloyd DFB Reisebüro. Charters have also included one for Formula One world champion Mika Häkkinen. Ciravenga says Fairway-Golfreisen, Grunberg, provider of golf holidays, will cooperate on customised charters. CEOs on Training A SERIES Gainjet, which believes the outlook for private aviation is strong despite the global economic downturn, has opened a UK sales office and is currently working on establishing a similar permanent office in St Petersburg. Gainjet is also planning further expansion of its fleet in 2009. The company’s operations and maintenance are based at the Athens headquarters, but ceo Ramsey Shaban says: “I decided to have a dedicated UK sales team for client ease of contact and quick response times.” The UK office, staffed by gm Kais Kassim, Natalie Aylett and Debi Knips, will be marketing a vip-configured B757 and a BAe146 configured for 34 passengers, a G450 and G550 all of which are expected to be in service in November. The aircraft join a 40-seat MD83 based in Manston, five G200s and a G450. “Owens Corning’s commitment to safety is unconditional. That’s why we train at FlightSafety.” DAVID T. BROWN President and CEO, Owens Corning Dave Brown, a graduate of Purdue University, joined Owens Corning in 1978. He was appointed to the board of directors in January 2002 and became president and chief executive officer three months later. Brown also has served as executive vice president and chief operating officer, and as president of several company Natalie Aylett and Debi Knips: enjoying brisk charter business. divisions. He serves on a number of boards, including the Toledo Museum of Art and the Dean’s Advisory Council for Purdue’s Krannert School of Management. Aylett says she and Knips have been in aviation for eight years. “We decided to join a young and expanding aircraft operator and are excited by the new aircraft additions, especially the B757 which will really fill a market niche.” Shaban says the G200s are “perfect” for trips from Europe to the Middle East and Africa and the 78seat B757 will certainly be used for larger groups, with larger baggage requirements, on long haul flights. He adds: “The G200 has a good range, excellent cabin and a larger baggage hold volume compared to competitors in its class. The new 18seat G550 will add further flexibility for our customers through its ultra long range capability, cabin size and large luggage compartment.” Gainjet, which is currently recruiting additional pilots, is looking into markets outside of Europe. “We have established Gainjet Russia and are currently studying India and North Africa,” says Shaban. “In 2009 we expect that the fleet will grow by 20 per cent with aircraft ownership and demand for private jets expected to grow despite the current economic situation.” S afety is everyone’s responsibility at Owens Corning, a world leader in building materials systems and composite solutions. Company President and CEO David Brown considers safety a key metric by which to measure success. Owens Corning’s commitment to safety is evident in the exceptional record of the corporate flight department, operating for 60 years without an accident. For more than 50 of those years, Owens Corning has relied on FlightSafety for professional, safety-centered training. “Safety isn’t just the job of the safety people. It is the responsibility of every employee throughout our company. Getting fully involved in all aspects of the company’s safety performance means exposing it, owning and acting upon it. We have one objective: zero injuries,” Brown says. “Regular training with FlightSafety helps prepare our flight department for the unexpected. The value and quality of training provided by FlightSafety is unequaled and an indispensable element of meeting that objective.” For more information, please contact any of our Learning Centers or call Scott Fera, Vice President Marketing: 718.565.4774. Alternatively Private Jet Card members can purchase blocks of 25 hours’ flight time on a range of newgeneration jets in any category – light, midsize, large or global – provided through partners. The deal signed with Bombardier is for 25 aircraft to be delivered over the first 22 months. The remaining aircraft will be delivered at the rate of one every three weeks thereafter. The first 60XR will be available from summer 2009 but Jet Republic is already taking enquiries about its earlier Jet Card programme launch. Breeze says the $1.5 billion 60XR order will enable Jet Republic to offer services across Europe. But he adds: “Initially our main focus will be Russia, Switzerland, France, Germany and the UK. We do also expect demand from high net worth individuals in the Middle East and Eastern Europe who will appreciate the service. The 60XR cabins have been redesigned with the latest communications and security Jonathan Breeze says demand for top-end private charter will grow despite the global economic downturn. systems installed along with improved seating.” Breeze says the company’s sound and robust business plan has enabled it to secure funding despite the economic downturn. “The company has substantial financial backing from Euram Bank, the leading Austrian private bank, and a consortium of its clients,” Breeze says. “Jet Republic was able to secure this funding as a result of the quality of its management team, which has considerable experience in the aviation, luxury and concierge industries, and strong growth in the private aviation market.” Breeze says the number of high net worth individuals is rising between 7 Bob Horner: “strong demand”. per cent and 8 per cent year on year in western Europe alone and business travel is now accepted as a business necessity. “Despite the current economic climate, the private jet market is enjoying strong growth. This, coupled with the fact that we believe there is significant room for improvement in the level of service provided by the private jet aviation sector, means there is a very strong and real opportunity for us to take a significant share of this market. We have the right proposition, an extremely talented management team to deliver on our strategy and the financial support to bring it to life.” The 60XR, he points out, can fly fuel efficiently at 51,000 ft and offer time-saving capabilities, reduced air traffic noise and less turbulence. “It can seat seven passengers who will be served hot meals and fresh espresso coffee by a multi-lingual flight attendant while they watch iPod video through the cabin system. Jet Republic is the aviation equivalent to a five-star boutique hotel,” says Breeze. The company says it has access to over 1,000 destinations in Europe, with guaranteed aircraft availability at as little as 24 hours’ notice. “The highest level of end-to-end global concierge opens doors to members in any city worldwide, from dinner reservations to theatre tickets. A virtual executive aide is on-call day and night with the full resources of the worldwide network.” Jet Republic’s management team includes senior personnel who previously worked for companies including GlaxoSmithKline, NetJets, WhiteConcierge, the Royal Air Force, Air Partner plc, Financial Times Group, TAG Aviation, Execujet, Groundforce One, RollsRoyce, Sotheby’s, Siemens, Marriott International, Bombardier, Euram Bank and McKinsey & Co. Breeze, for instance, joined NetJets in 2002 as a Citation XL pilot before becoming an instructor and Falcon 900 captain. Jet Republic says it will partner with ClimateCare to be 100 per cent carbon neutral from launch. Aircraft will be registered in Portugal and maintenance will be carried out at Bombardier approved maintenance facilities across Europe. Bob Horner, svp sales, Bombardier Business Aircraft, says: “The private jet market is going from strength to strength, despite a downturn in the US and world economies. In fact, the Business Aircraft Market Forecast predicts US$300 billion in deliveries over the next 10-year period.” He adds: “Bombardier estimates that the worldwide business jet fleet will nearly double in the next 10 years from 12,800 to 24,800 in 2017 and we expect Europe’s share to grow from 13 per cent to 25 per cent of the market.” Icejet seeks new bases to service Europe Icejet reports that it is not affected by the financial crisis currently engulfing Iceland’s economy. “Since the beginning of this year, over 80 per cent of Icejet’s Dornier 328 jet charter business has been concentrated in the UK and Europe, with the majority of its revenues earned in Sterling and Euros,” says md Jon Ingi Jonsson. “As a result, it has been far less affected by the decline of the Icelandic Krona. Demand for our high spec and spacious 328 Jets is strong and we are actively pursuing opening a couple of new bases,” adds Jonsson. Icejet is a part of a group of companies owned by Nordic Partners Investment Group, whose investments embrace hotels, real estate, food production, aviation and retail widely across Europe. Jonsson says: “The foundation of Icejet, our private jet company and sister company IceFBO, which provides fixed based operations at Reykjavik, is strong and will remain strong.” Reykjavik-based Icejet currently has two of its four Dornier 328 Jets configured in 14-seat vip layout, positioned out of London Southend and always available for charter. “Icejet is the only Dornier 328 Jet operator in the world permitted to fly into London City,” Jonsson says. Two further 14-seat jets and one Dornier 328 in 19-seat corporate shuttle layout are based at Reykjavik. One of Icejet’s 328 jets is fitted with long range fuel tanks, giving a 2,000 nm range, enabling it to cover routes such as London-Moscow. And so far, panic does not seem to have gripped Austria in quite the same way as it has elsewhere in Europe. Its banking sector remains closelylinked to the state and investments are largely protected from the peaks and troughs of other European and global stock markets. The country is also less reliant on the US economy than some of its neighbours. The country’s central location within Europe and the ease with which many operators have been able to secure an AOC has spawned a glut of charter operators, particularly for a country of Austria’s modest proportions. Lately though most operators have begun to admit that the demand for charter flights has started to dip over the past few weeks. When budgets are stretched chartering aircraft can be one of the first business expenses to be cut. Bernhard Fragner is ceo of Grazbased GlobeAir. It owns and operates four Mustang aircraft. “Over the past few weeks we’ve definitely noticed a small dip in demand,” he says. “We’re all wondering what’s going to happen to Austria is preparing for the worst while plans are made for the future Welcome Air recently added six new aircraft to its fleet. the market. Hopefully things will pick up. The demand for very light jets is still ongoing though. A lot of corporates are opting for smaller aircraft to save money.” If and when the economy picks up, GlobeAir hopes to add more Mustangs to the fleet, one perhaps as early as 2009. Lydia Hoess flies a Citation II and Citation Excel for Air Styria, also based in Graz. It handles a mixture of passenger, freight and air ambulance flights. According to Hoess, 2007 was its best year so far and the company had been hoping for another successful year. However, the past few weeks have been slow. “We maybe received two or three requests for flights but no bookings. “Most of our business last year came from Ukraine and Russia but they also are waiting for things to improve at the moment,” she says. “We are performing charter flights, cargo and emergency flights so we cannot offer more than we are doing. We’ll just have to see what happens and hopefully the situation will start to get better.” Most of Air Styria’s clients come from Russia, Ukraine and Austria’s neighbouring countries. Recently however, a more exciting project came up. “We made a movie here in Austria with our Citation Excel where we performed a sequence in a film. There was some filming on the ground as well as in flight, a takeoff or a landing for example. It was a good thing to do. It was a nice experience and we got to see people working on location.” As the opportunity for filming is rare, Air Styria is one of a huge number of charter companies in Austria competing for business. Explains Hoess: “There are quite a lot of planes here for the size of the country. Fifty aeroplanes in Vienna alone, I think.” So when business is going well how does the company gain the advantage over its competitors? “It’s important to always be flexible and be on standby, even when it is quiet. We’re a small company and that’s the way we like it. If you’re small you can be very flexible. The clients know you and in return you know what they like, the service they enjoy, the food they want to eat.” Being a small company also means that its staff often have more than one role at the company. Lydia Hoess is a pilot but she also works on the ground in operations. Typically, there are four staff allocated to each aircraft plus the cabin attendant who also works in operations. Lydia’s husband Robert is chief pilot and they often fly together. Air Styria operates a Citation II and Citation Excel. She recalls: “I started in 1990 as a private pilot before I married Robert at the airport in 1997. Since then we fly a lot together. Running a charter business means that you can’t have much of a private life as you need to keep the fleet airborne as much as you can. But we’ve been together for 18 years now and we have a good relationship.” FAST IN, FAST OUT, NO FUSS. When London is your destination it makes so much business sense to choose Biggin Hill Airport. It also hopes to add a Challenger 300 to the fleet, with orders placed for a Global Express XRS in 2010 and another Challenger 300 the following year. A-Jet, like many other charter firms, has begun to feel the pressure of an unstable economic climate. Sales director Christian Schmadlbauer joined the company in February of this year, having previously worked for Comtel-Air for several years. He says: “The world economic crisis has surely affected the demand for business and leisure flights over the past couple of weeks and is unlikely to recover that fast. People first need to regain the trust in the stock markets and the economy and experience some stability before the situation can improve. Nevertheless, I am quite sure that business will return to normal. “The Challenger 604 is performing well. Of course we don’t expect any dream figures at the end of the year due to the current economic crisis. But we are honest and straight enough to say that we can match last year’s hours. I am more than surprised these days that a lot of operators are still telling stories about increasing demand and flight hours per month which are highly implausible, because on the other side I see them all mostly standing in the hangars doing nothing.” In such an inhospitable climate, managing aircraft rather than owning a fleet has definite advantages. VIF Luftfahrt, whose main base is also in Vienna, Husband and wife team Robert and Lydia Hoess fly Air Styria’s fleet. discontinued the use of propelleroperated aircraft due to a lack of demand and is currently considering whether to use its Piper aircraft for charter or for private use only. The main advantage it holds over operators who own their fleet is that they only rely on charter business for a small percentage of the time. Manager Axel Schwarz told EBAN that the owners use their aircraft 50-80 per cent of the time, which means that only a very small amount of business has to come from brokers and the free market. For them, business has so far continued to roll in. He says: “For companies like us who just operate aircraft for owners things have remained pretty stable but we still don’t know what will happen next. “Austria encouraged people to acquire an AOC and the authorities helped with that by making it cheap A G450 is the latest aircraft to join MJet. and easy to do so,” he explains. “The country also has a tradition of attracting investment from former Soviet countries and has good relations in that region which has boosted business.” It could also explain Austria’s ‘indifference’ to the condition of the US economy. Things might not be so good in the future however, warns Schwarz. “I think it could change very soon. Fees are set to increase and EU regulations now govern the business much more than Austria itself. If the economic situation remains unstable for the next few years, people will stop flying business jets so those companies who own aircraft will experience problems and will either fold or be forced to consolidate with other operators. For those that are left, an increase in the amount of aircraft on the market will hopefully mean a drop in prices for those looking to expand or develop a particular sector. We’ll just have to see what happens.” Most of VIF Luftfahrt’s clients are Austrian companies. So would Schwarz be tempted to look for clients further afield? “We do have aircraft based abroad, in Friedrichshafen, in Germany, for example. We’ve also had some enquiries about working with clients in Eastern Europe but it’s not our philosophy to get involved in that at the moment. We never considered going into that business. We don’t have the capability to operate on that scale as you need to have an office where you are based. This is a volatile business. Things will change over the coming years so if you are based in Poland, Hungary or Slovenia for example we could see business moving away from Austria. “We focus on VIP flights where the owners mainly use their aircraft, or else people who are known to them use it. Having to source only a small portion of charter work helps keep our costs at a level that makes it easy to operate. If we expand we’ll need to take on more people. What we have now is sufficient but that doesn’t mean we won’t expand in future.” Despite the uncertainty, some operators are continuing to expand their fleet. Earlier this year, the Jetalliance Group of Vienna placed an order for an ACJ and two A318 Elites, the eighth Airbus order to date. One ACJ and one Elite have been delivered to owners and Jetalliance is looking at meeting demand for larger aircraft which might include aircraft in the A330 and A340 class. Lukas LichtnerHoyer, chief executive of Jetalliance Holding, predicts that demand for private aircraft travel in Russia, the Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria and the former CIS countries will grow in the next ten years. MJet has bases in Vienna and Moscow. It recently added a G450 aircraft to its fleet. Meanwhile, executive charter business Tyrolean Jet Services celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Based at Innsbruck, the company is marking the occasion with the addition of a Cessna Citation Bravo to its six-strong fleet that also comprises a CJ2 and a Global Express. Page 08-11 27/10/08 3:23 pm Page 11 EUROPEAN BUSINESS AIR NEWS AUSTRIA REGIONAL REVIEW In Salzburg, Helios Hubschrauber operates four 500D helicopters, where it performs VIP flights, heavy lifting work and aerial photography and filming for German and Austrian television companies. Managing director Walter Enthammer, who has been flying for 30 years, is very happy with the fleet. “The 500D is efficient and very reliable. We are always looking to find a better one but for our kind of operation it’s the best kind of helicopter we can have. We tried an EC120 and you can’t compare it. The 500D is much better for us.” As well as charter, the company has been diversifying its core business offering by developing a noise-reducing rotor blade system. According to Enthammer, part of the company’s plans for the future is to market them to international helicopter manufacturers. He explains: “We’ve been developing noise reducing rotor blades that can be used on our helicopters as well as other models. We’ve had some success. There’s been a good reduction in both the noise and power required and we are planning to market this in the future. The less noise a helicopter produces the better it is for the environment and for a friendly neighbourhood.” A-Jet Aviation is based in Schwechat airport in Vienna. Also adding to its fleet is Austria’s Welcome Air Group, which includes the subsidiary Tyrol Air Ambulance. It recently expanded its business to include two Dornier 328 jets as well as two Dornier 328 props and Citation V and Citation Bravo ambulances. “Configured with 31 all-leather seats plus a baggage bay access door, the 328 jet is extremely versatile, rugged and just perfect for the various flying activities we perform,” says joint chief executive Jakob Ringler. “Its cabin is generous and there really isn’t another aircraft on the market today that is on a par when it comes to affordable operating costs too.” 08 09 HANDbook of business aviation in Europe EUROPEAN BUSINESS AIR NEWS The new edition is out now. NOVEMBER 2008 11 Avcon Jet advocates ‘private bank’ approach Avcon Jet, styled the “private bank among charter operators”, pledges to continue rapid expansion of a fleet which has risen to 12 aircraft with the arrival of a fourth CJ2+. “Our company is one of the fastest growing business aviation companies in Europe,” says ceo Alexander Vagacs. “We intend to continue investing in the fleet and its services with a guaranteed secure investment volume. This way, Avcon Jet and its partners will be even better equipped to exploit this market flexibly and successfully.” (See Avcon targets new aircraft in EBAN July). The new CJ2+ will be stationed at the Vienna home base and Avcon Jet anticipates it will have a high usage rate to compare favourably with that achieved by the other aircraft in its fleet in the first two quarters of 2008. “The average usage is more than 100 flight hours per month, per aircraft. Due to these figures, more and more Werner Slavik: anticipates further demand for aircraft financing. clients see the benefit of the ‘private bank among the operators’ as an optimal choice for their aircraft management,” says Christian Lang, Avcon Jet’s cfo. “Customers are seen and treated as partners, whose investment is put in the responsible hands of Avcon Jet to gain profit. We work for adequate earnings for our selected customers, not for customer acquisition at any price. That is also why our fleet is limited to only new aircraft which meet the high demands of our customers.” Vagacs, who personally ferried the new CJ2+ from the Cessna production site in Wichita to Austria, says: “Every new aircraft is kind of a big deal and the permanent growth of our fleet makes me proud. But my big immediate priority is that our concept of acting as a private bank for our customers has the desired effect on profitability. We work with our client’s capital, their aircraft, as prudently and effectively as possible. Good utilisation makes the aircraft profitable for their owners.” Werner Slavik, head of aircraft finance of Hypo Group Alpe Adria Leasing says that “our bank is looking forward to participating in more upcoming deals with Avcon Jet.” Lang says: “Flight staff are supported by an experienced team of specialists with legal and fiscal backgrounds as well as experience in the banking, finance and insurance industries. Our permanently growing fleet of at present 12 business jets covers the whole spectrum of business aviation from small to medium to large cabin.” The fleet includes the Citation series (CJ2+, CJ3, Bravo, XLS), a Learjet 45, two Challenger 300s, a Falcon F2000EX and a GV. Avcon Jet says it will receive further additions to its fleet in the next few months. Hertel executives used to take bigger aircraft from Antwerp. “We now save even more time flying from Rotterdam with Bikkair instead,” says Knoll. “What personally attracts me the most is the fact that we can adjust the time of departure to meet our own schedule.” Knoll is one of hundreds of executives boosting VLJ traffic in Europe either as a charter user or an aircraft owner. Eurocontrol reported at the second annual European VLJ conference in Barcelona that VLJ flight numbers in Europe have Joost Knoll: favours the Mustang for fast, economical travel. grown from just below 50 in September 2007 to 250 in March 2008 and are now heading upwards to 300 a month. “Travelling with commercial operators meant that we either flew too early, creating a hectic schedule, or too late, thus losing time,” says Knoll. “With Bikkair when schedules are changed, I simply call the pilot a few hours in advance to set the new schedule. If everything runs to plan, I call him a half an hour before departure, so the Mustang is ready when I arrive. You meet up with your fellow travellers, park your car in front of the building, walk in and within several minutes you have Phenom training expansion plans for US and UK Embraer CAE Training Services (ECTS) has launched its first pilot and technical training programs for the Phenom 100 at CAE’s facility in Dallas, Texas. “This is a key milestone for the joint venture, which was established in October 2006 to provide pilot and ground crew training to Embraer customers of the Phenom 100 and Phenom 300 jets,” says Simon Newitt, Embraer’s director of customer training. A second Phenom 100/300 full flight simulator (FFS) is scheduled to be deployed at CAE’s Burgess Hill training centre in the UK, in the first quarter of 2009. ECTS also plans to add a third Phenom 100 FFS at a location to be decided. boarded and are ready for takeoff. It is literally a five minute job. The Bikkair concept is mainly about timesaving at attractive rates so the luxury lunches are excluded. The Mustang itself is a comfortable aircraft. Although its range is limited, it is the ideal solution for us for visiting our customers and offices within Europe. You are never on the aircraft longer than two or three hours.” Alex Hendriks, deputy director ATM Strategies at Eurocontrol, told the VLJ conference that much has been accomplished under the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme, a European initiative working to define an integrated future ATM system for Europe. SESAR aims to enhance the safety and capacity of the European aviation system and reduce costs and impact on the environment. Hendriks says VLJs, many of them flown by pilot owners, fly at high attitude but at lower speed than larger aircraft and this is causing ATC issues. Another issue involves TCAS II (see EBAN May 2008). The European Commission’s Mikolaj Ratajczyk says the EU’s dedicated policy on general and business aviation is incorporating VLJs and their special characteristics sector into the overall air transport framework. The Commission, Eurocontrol and private companies aim to increase the safety factor, triple capacity, reduce ATM costs ten-fold and realise a 10 per cent reduction in emissions per flight. José Mariano López, md Barcelona Aeronautics & Space Association (BAIE) welcomed around 80 delegates to the conference. He suggested Spain would be a good manufacturing host Page 12-13 27/10/08 11:50 am Page 13 EUROPEAN BUSINESS AIR NEWS NOVEMBER 2008 13 VLJ FOCUS for the next generation possibly all-composite VLJ, with Barcelona being a “magnet for worldwide engineering talent.” VLJ production is largely concentrated in the US but an assembly line in Europe would be at the centre of an extremely significant VLJ operational region, delegates were told. The customer in Europe is responsible for getting his new aircraft home from the manufacturer in the US and Brazil so aircraft delivery to European customers is a key issue, according to LEA md Patrick Margetson-Rushmore. He pointed out that he spoke from personal experience about the need to ensure that training slots on the simulators are booked well in advance. LEA’s pilots, he says, enjoy flying their entry level Mustang, and the ‘sweet spot’ is journeys of 40 to 90 minutes. Acquiring a large fleet of VLJs will definitely keep costs down, the conference was told by Matthijs de Haan, md of ETIRC, parent company of Eclipse Aviation which has decided to build the Eclipse 500 in Russia. “Absolutely Russia is a big market for VLJs, but so too are high economic growth countries like India, Indonesia and China.” Dublin-based Jetbird announced it had successfully raised $14.2 million in launch capital through the sale of a 9.3 per cent stake to a Middle Eastern investor, and that it would be offering Phenom 100 services next spring. The conference, organised by London and Dubai-based MIU Events, heard from Ed Smith, senior VP at General Aviation Manufacturers’ Association, that over 200 pilots have been trained to date on VLJ models and that their average age is 47. VLJ models are extremely advanced, with state-ofthe-art technology in the flight deck, often more sophisticated than many I N D U S T R Y airliners flying today, delegates were told. Robert Appleton of Europraxis Consulting reported that there are a potential 260 European airports suitable for VLJ use, but options are currently limited by lack of customs and VFR facilities. VLJ operators will also be looking at other airport characteristics such as terminals, fuelling, ground transportation and handling, he added. The need for VLJ operators to be “realistic” was stressed during the two-day conference, along with the high priority of communications with the OEMs and of checking regulations when introducing new jets. The importance of determining customer requirements well in advance such as cabin connectivity and where to have a lavatory is also fundamental, said Joe Leader, president of Europe’s Air Taxi Association, which now has 15 members. Spain to host Citation service centre Cessna has gained corporate approval to build a new European Citation Service Center in Spain to complement the Le Bourget facility. The company hopes to break ground in 2009 and begin operations there in late 2010. Gulfstream G250 offers larger cabin, longer range Gulfstream Aerospace has announced the introduction of its newest super mid-size business jet, the Gulfstream G250, offering a larger cabin and longer range. The G250 is capable of travelling 3,400 nm at 0.80 Mach and has a maximum operating speed of 0.85 Mach. With an initial cruise altitude of 41,000 feet, the G250 can climb to a maximum altitude of 45,000 feet, where it can avoid air traffic congestion and adverse weather. Gulfstream projects the G250 will be certified in 2011 and expects to begin customer deliveries of the new aircraft the same year. The first flight of the aircraft is scheduled for the second half of 2009. Hawker launches 450XP model Hawker Beechcraft Corporation has announced the launch of its newest light business jet the Hawker 450XP. Following on from the Hawker 400XP, the four key areas of upgrade include: all new engines that deliver 10 per cent better fuel economy; the latest Rockwell Collins cabin management system; a more luxurious interior based on the interior of the 900XP; all new avionics. First flight of the aircraft is scheduled for the second quarter of 2009 with FAA and EASA Certification expected in 2010. Taxijet to begin commercial operations next April Continued from page 1 establishing operational bases at Cuatro Vientos and preparing at Getafe, if necessary, to move from Cuatro Vientos. We see the Balearic Islands, and Andorra, operating from the new airport at Seu D’Urgell, as locations with high demand for easy connections to European destinations. We target companies with €20M to €200M turnover with multiple locations and within 30km of a regional airport especially when there is a regular requirement for teams to travel together.” Taxijet looked at the full range of VLJs that were being promoted back in 2002. “There were three key factors that led us to choose the Eclipse 500 – operational characteristics, operating costs and environment,” says Neill. He points out that the Eclipse 500 will allow Taxijet to fly in and out of 2,000 European airports compared to the 800 that are accessible to larger jets. “Runway lengths are the main restrictor but noise levels are another factor,” he says. Neill says no other aircraft can offer the performance and operational cost of the Eclipse 500 for journeys of 300 km to 1,400 km carrying one to four passengers. “The aircraft is comfortable for one to two hour flights which will be the main bulk of our planned operations. Our initial focus is on Delegates at the Barcelona VLJ conference exchange pleasantries. Photo courtesy of Marc Sorli. day trips to difficult to reach locations, or multiple-stop trips that would be impossible in commercial aviation. As we grow our fleet we can become more flexible in terms of one-way trips and other services for our clients.” The Eclipse 500 has the lowest direct operating costs of any jet – primarily because it uses so little fuel compared to other aircraft, Neill adds. “So far we are seeing an average of 50 gallons per hour of flight. At a distance of 150 metres it is as noisy as a vacuum cleaner at three metres.” Taxijet, he says, employs people with a “passion for aviation and a passion for people.” The director of marketing, Franc Sanmarti, is involved with the Aeroclub at Sabadell which has a museum of old aircraft that are lovingly restored and flown once a year in the Festa de Cel – an airshow that has become a key part of Barcelona city celebrations every September. Neill sees 2008 as an “inflexion point” in the world of commercial aviation – the demand curve has dramatically changed. “Ryanair, Easyjet, Vueling – the arrival of these low cost operators have forced the national flag carriers to reduce their service levels to compete on price,” says Neill. “This results in one level of customer service – the same for the stag party from Ireland spending a weekend in Valencia, or the business traveller making a day trip to hold several meetings in Madrid. We believe that business class no longer exists on European short-haul commercial flights – and the new business class will be the air taxi. We look for aviators, not pilots – for people who want to be part of changing aviation for the better, for people who see a challenge and rise to the occasion. We hold regular open days.” Taxijet initially started as a service to manage Eclipse 500s on behalf of businessmen in the Catalunya region and initial orders were made in January 2002 for four of the aircraft. Taxijet established maintenance facilities and offices at Sabadell during 2006 and took delivery of its first Eclipse 500 in December 2007. “Demand is such that we have since expanded our ‘club’ of owners to other business people who see the need for 100 to 200 hours of air taxi services per year and look to Taxijet to sell the spare capacity of their aircraft to our network of clients,” Neill adds. Hawker has announced a new model King Air, the 350i. It is to have an advanced infotainment system, Rockwell Collins Venue integrated Cabin Management System (CMS) featuring video screens, iPod connectivity; a luxury interior; an exclusive multi-step noise reduction process; and revolutionary new Beechcraft FlexCabin capability – a whole new way of reconfiguring the cabin. Socata unveils twin turboprop EADS Socata has released initial information on the company’s next generation aircraft project. Codenamed NTx, the new aircraft will be larger than the TBM 850, and aims at completing Socata’s range on the N E W S . . . upper end. Using a twin-engine configuration to offer a large scope of potential applications, the NTx will have greater useful load, more payload capability and a bigger cabin than the TBM 850. Powerplant applications for the NTx are still under discussion. Although the launch date is not yet determined, the manufacturer is working on a schedule and expects to be able to officially launch the program before the end of 2009.
