ARCHBISHOP SHAW HIGH SCHOOL EXCELSIOR - EVER STRIVING, EVER ACHIEVING A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR/PRINCIPAL, FR. LOUIS MOLINELLI, SDB Dear Friends, Welcome to Archbishop Shaw High School! As a Catholic School, we strive to teach as Jesus did, with a spirit of apostolic zeal, compassion, and boundless love. As a school administered by the Salesians of St. John Bosco for its entire history, we follow the model of education laid out by St. John Bosco called the Preventive System. This is an educational system based on the charity found in the gospel and on the four pillars of Reason, Religion, Loving-Kindness, and Active Presence. The ministry of the Salesians in the Archdiocese began in 1933 when we were asked to administer Hope Haven, an orphanage for boys. Archbishop Shaw continues to be a place where young people can find a home that welcomes, a church that proclaims Christ, a school that prepares for life, and a playground where they can meet and make friends. Our commitment to young people is clear and firm, namely to enable our young people to become honest citizens and upright Catholics and Christians. The strength of Archbishop Shaw High Schools lies in its Salesian family spirit. We see each of our young men as unique and precious in God’s eyes. We work to give them the very best in education so that every aspect of their lives experiences growth to maturity. Our school motto Excelsior, meaning ever striving and ever achieving, invigorates us to provide a top quality Catholic and Salesian education. We look forward to meeting you and sharing with you the experience that has made over seven thousand graduates soar with Eagle pride! God bless you! Fr. Louis Molinelli, SDB SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY Founded in 1962, Archbishop Shaw is an all-boys, private, Catholic high school on the Westbank of New Orleans, dedicated to serving the youth of the greater New Orleans area. Students enjoy the comfort of a 72-acre campus, Chromebooks with wireless internet, small classes, and a competitive extracurricular program. Our strong academic tradition challenges students on the path to adulthood. At the core of our educational and spiritual foundation are the Salesians of St. John Bosco. St. John Bosco believed that holistic education enriches and fosters the development of young boys into young men. This philosophy requires knowing students, listening to their words, and responding to their needs. Our family atmosphere makes this a school desirable to all young men seeking acceptance while at the same time receiving a quality education. Educators strive to build personalized rapport with students, which consists of friendliness and affirmation, while at the same time carefully providing structures that promote self-discipline. Our educators are not merely content with imparting knowledge to their students; they seek to help the students recognize their inner worth and dignity as children of God and develop their own unique gifts and skills. SCHOOL HISTORY Archbishop Shaw High School was dedicated by Archbishop of New Orleans Joseph F. Rummel on August 19, 1962. The school was named in honor of Archbishop of New Orleans John W. Shaw because of his special interest in the development of the Catholic community of the West Bank. Archbishop Shaw was in charge of the Archdiocese of New Orleans from 1918-1934, during which time he oversaw the founding of 29 schools and 33 churches in the area. Archbishop Shaw appointed the first pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Marrero in 1924. Six years later, he dedicated the buildings for Hope Haven Institute, an orphanage and foster home. The Salesians were assigned to run Hope Haven. On that same property, a school opened in his name 32 years later. Rev. Paul P. Avallone, SDB was the school’s founding principal in 1962. Additional grade levels were added until a four-year program was in place by fall of 1965. An eighth grade was added for the 1984-1985 school year. In the years to follow, the campus acquired an administration building, gymnasium, swimming pool, baseball stadium, new cafeteria, and a modern classroom building housing 20 classrooms. WHO IS DON BOSCO? MISSION STATEMENT St. John Bosco, known worldwide as Don Bosco, (Italian for Father Bosco), lived in Italy in the 19th century as the Industrial Revolution was taking hold. As the second son of a widowed mother, he saw firsthand the indifference of the world to the plight of impoverished young people. Both as a youth seeking to share the riches of a full Christian life with his companions and later as priest who looked after disadvantaged boys, he developed a method of working with young people that was founded on the principles of reason, religion, and loving kindness. Anyone seeking to influence young people must first develop an authentic relationship with them based on love and respect. This relationship allows an educator to help the young person avoid many dangers and difficulties - hence the method’s name: the Preventive System. Archbishop Shaw High School is administered by the Salesians of St. John Bosco, a religious order of priests and brothers who educate young people using this method. St. John Bosco’s feast day is celebrated each year during Catholic Schools Week, indicating official church approval of this method. The mission of Archbishop Shaw High School is to provide a program that furthers the college preparator y education of its students in a manner consistent with the Doctrines of Catholic education and in the context of the Salesian philosophy and teachings of St. John Bosco as manifested in his Preventive System of Education.
