“Downright Upbeat.” These two words best
describe the mood in San Diego in March at
IHRSA 2010, the industry’s premier annual
gathering of health club leaders worldwide.
People were happy. They were networking, trading ideas, and learning from
some of the best minds in the business. The IHRSA trade show was buzzing.
Business was getting done. In short, everyone was looking forward, not back.
Such is the nature of our industry.
As you will see from this report, the global health club industry continues to
expand. In 2009, it generated nearly $70 billion in total revenue, serving nearly
119,000,000 members at more than 126,000 facilities worldwide.
Health club members continued to utilize their facilities at record-breaking
rates. For example, in the United States, health club usage by core members in
2009 averaged an impressive 102 days a year! How many other industries are
as frequently engaged with their customers?
Like nearly every industry, ours has been affected by the global economic
recession. However, it has shown itself to be remarkably resilient. Club owners
have re-examined their operations from top to bottom. They have implemented
tighter expense management, and have found new and innovative ways to
attract and retain members. They have made their businesses better. Savvy
operators have also taken advantage of softer real estate markets and lower
construction costs to fund expansions and renovations.
As veteran industry consultant Rick Caro, the president of Management
Vision, Inc., explains on page 9, attrition rates have leveled off and membership levels have stabilized. Ancillary revenue seems to be increasing, he says,
and clubs’ diligent expense savings are starting to have a meaningful impact
on the bottom line.
Our industry is blessed with thousands of industrious businessmen and
women, many of whom are profiled in the pages of this publication. In 2009,
these club operators continued to find innovative ways to grow their businesses, to serve their communities and to promote wellness. With the rising
costs of health care on everybody’s mind, the health club industry is poised like
no other to be a major contributor to making the world healthier.
When the book closes on 2010, we are confident that the 2011 edition of

T
he health club industry had a learning year in 2009, as the
recessionary economy affected businesses in a variety of ways.
“Clubs found fewer new prospect leads and needed to find new
marketing techniques,” explains Rick Caro, President of Management Vision, Inc., a fitness industry consulting company based in
New York City. “They suffered from increasing attrition rates. In
many cases, ancillary revenue levels decreased or at least stopped
growing at previous rates. Finally, the pressure on revenue triggered many clubs to
attack all expense items and create meaningful cost savings. In many cases, the
expense savings did not start early enough in the year, so EBITDA and
EBITDAR levels decreased.”
Caro adds, “Despite this pressure on clubs, there
were some elements of optimism—especially
toward the end of 2009. Adults who remained
as members used their clubs more frequently. Fewer new builds occurred, so
the balance of supply versus demand
remained about the same. The debt
markets were still difficult to
access, so fewer major transactions occurred in 2009.”
Most extremists do not see
any major improvement in
key factors—including
employment levels—until
later in 2010, notes Caro.
“Most clubs are therefore
turning inward to improve
their organic growth,” he
explains. “Attrition rates
seem to be levelled off in
early 2010, as membership
levels have stabilized. Ancillary revenue seems to be
creeping upward. Expense
savings are starting to have a
meaningful impact on the
bottom line. Franchise companies are growing. A few of the
larger clubs are acquiring or building, but at a slower pace compared
to 2007 and early 2008. Debt is still a
challenge (both for cash flow-based
lending as well as asset-based). Many
private equity firms are still standing on the

sidelines waiting to enter the club industry and few
are likely to exit in 2010.”
Caro adds, “Management is being tested and
often proving itself in these challenging times.”
“When consumer confidence falls, people tend
to close their pocketbooks, so we’ve seen a great
deal of pressure put on consumer spending over
the past 18 months,” notes Curves president Mike
Raymond. “We believe we’ll see this begin to
recover toward the end of 2010, but it’s going to
take time.” Curves, the largest fitness franchisor,
has expanded its reach to 76 countries, and by the
fall of 2010, expects to have a significant presence
in three more: Russia, China and India. “Curves
has huge international aspirations, and it’s exciting to watch us open in so many countries—especially those that have typically had few opportunities for women,” adds Raymond.
Anytime Fitness, the #1 coed fitness club chain
in the world, recently opened its 1,300th club and
is rapidly expanding internationally. In the past 12
months, master agreements have been signed in
Mexico, India, the Netherlands, Belgium and
Luxembourg, with similar agreements expected
soon in the UK, Ireland, Japan and Vietnam. “From
our perspective, we see the economy slowly
improving,” says Mark Daly, National Media Director for Anytime Fitness. “The companies that will
do best going forward are those that are perceived
to provide value to their members.”
Environmental awareness (or “going green”)
remains a key issue for the fitness industry. Green
business practices include improvements as small
as recycling and cleaning with non-toxic products,
to larger construction projects using building materials with low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs),
using post-consumer recycled materials, i.e. rubber
flooring, and installing LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design)-certified heating, air
conditioning, and ventilation systems in clubs.
In February 2010, IHRSA released the results
of its first-ever Green/Sustainability Survey. The
purpose was to gain insight into the opinions
and practices of club operators around environmental sustainability and its associated business
implications. More than 130 participants provided
the breadth of data for the survey that has set a
benchmark for measuring the industry’s green
business practices.
The results indicate that overall, health club
operators have a positive perspective on integrating
environmentally friendly practices into their daily
business practices and see “going green” as a way
to have a positive impact on club performance.

• Over two-thirds (70.7%) of participants indicated
senior management having a strongly positive
perspective on implementing green practices.
• Over half (54.7%) of participating clubs indicated
that green practices have a moderate priority
within their organization. One-third (33.1%)
indicated they have a high priority.
• Over six out of 10 (65%) surveyed club operators
believe implementing green practices at their clubs
would differentiate them from the competition.
• Over one-third (35%) indicated that senior management believes green practices would increase
membership growth.
• Nearly four out of 10 respondents (38.8%)
responded that senior management believes green
practices would increase membership retention.
• Nearly half of participating clubs (48.9%)
responded that senior management believes that
green practices would increase club profits.
“The world’s increasing need and focus on
environmentalism presents health club owners
and operators with the opportunity to improve
the health of the environment as well as that
of their members,”

IHRSA on the survey.

According to Meredith Poppler, IHRSA’s Vice
President of Industry Growth, the global fitness
industry is facing its most dangerous threat ever in
the form of drastically increasing music copyright
fees. “Sales of music CD’s have dropped precipitously due to the advent of digital music, so the
music industry is looking to other sources to
replace this lost revenue,” she explains. “They
have targeted industries that currently pay music
license fees for the use of music, mainly health
clubs and night clubs.”

UNITED STATES
In 2009, U.S. health club industry performance
remained consistent, despite slow economic conditions and rising unemployment. Increases in club
usage and non-dues spending helped increase
overall industry revenues above 2008. In addition,
attendance increased to an all-time high average of
102 days in 2009.
“Increased usage is typically associated with
increased spending on non-dues related items, such
as personal training,
lessons, juice bars, and
other services,” says

“In spite of the tough
economy, U.S. consumers visited their clubs
more often, not only to
improve their health,
but to relieve stress.”

recognized Plus One
Health Management,
led by founder and CEO

Mike Motta, on its list of
fastest-growing companies: the Inc. 5,000. The list scored privately owned
companies based on revenue growth between 2005
and 2008. Plus One, based in New York, had a 73%
growth rate, which can be attributed to sales
growth in new industries and regions, expanding
its “green” ECOwellness approach to facility design,
operations, and programming, and expanding its
service offerings. The company also made the Top
100 list of Inc. 5,000 companies ranked by number
of employees.
Bally Total Fitness Corp., which has faced a
series of financial challenges in recent years,
emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection
for the second time in as many years. The courtapproved move reduces the company’s debt from
$800 million to $85 million, with leading investors
converting their bank debt into equity in the chain;
JPMorgan Chase & Co. was expected to wind up
with 50.5% of the stock of the reorganized company, and Anchorage Advisors LLC, a hedge fund,
with 33.7%. The arrangement also provides BTF
with access to revolving and term loans. As a result,
the company will be able to keep 85% of its 270
clubs open and retain 13,000 employees. “The
unparalleled financial flexibility we have after
emerging from bankruptcy will allow us to make
investments necessary to build Bally into the
preeminent fitness chain in the country,” says CEO
Michael Sheehan.
At press time, creditors of Crunch Fitness were
set to begin voting on the liquidating Chapter 11
plan that offers $140,000 to unsecured creditors.
Crunch filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in May
2009 and was authorized in September to sell the
business in exchange for secured debt.
In July 2009, Club One, a fitness management
provider based in San Francisco, announced the
addition of six facilities to its roster of nearly 100
fitness centers nationwide. “This growth is not only
a positive sign for the industry’s overall outlook but
is a good indicator that businesses are increasingly
recognizing the financial viability of fitness centers
and the impact that such facilities can have on
healthy and stress-free lifestyles of employees and
members,” says Bill McBride, COO of Club One.

the recession and increasing revenues from all
profit centers,” says Brent Darden, General
Manager/Owner of Telos Fitness Center in Dallas,
Texas. “Unfortunately, the economy affected our
club’s target demographic to a significant degree,
with ongoing corporate layoffs and overall financial strain.” He continues, “The mental outlook of
most of our members continues to be guarded and
cautious related to the economy, and has been
evident in their current spending habits compared
to previous levels.”
Elite Sports Clubs owner Kay Yuspeh says that
one of the silver linings of the economic downturn
is that it’s been an ideal time for building and renovating. “We have a big addition going on one of
our Wisconsin clubs,
and the timing is very
good,” she explains.
“The bids came in low,
because so many people
are looking for work.”

& Fitness, located in
Saco, Maine. “There still
seems to be concern

no longer the palpable fear we saw last year that
dramatically affected spending.” He adds, “As a
result, we have seen an increasing sales trend over
the past six months.”
“In the northeast, we were a bit slow to feel the
full effects of the economic downturn,” notes Rick
Beusman, President of Saw Mill Sports Management in Mount Kisco,
New York. “We felt
them in late 2009. In
the first quarter of
2010, the mood seemed
to brighten, and people
were again willing to
commit to spending for
a healthy lifestyle.”

the problem of childhood obesity, a long-standing
issue that threatens both the health of America’s
children and the future of our country.
“We are extremely

has taken on the issue of
childhood obesity,” says
IHRSA President & CEO
Joe Moore. “We encourage all Americans to
stand behind her in her
efforts to stop the tide of
childhood obesity, and
to do what they can to
help ensure healthy
futures for our children
and for our country.”
In 2009, IHRSA
helped to protect the

industry from harmful
business regulation
that would directly impact U.S. clubs’ bottom-lines
on 19 occasions and helped enact legislation promoting the industry in 2 more instances. In fact,
monitoring and tracking over 200 bills impacting
the industry, IHRSA prevented any single piece of
legislation that would adversely impact health club
operations from becoming law. In addition, IHRSA
helped to grow and promote the industry by helping to enact legislation that will increase the
number of Americans who exercise. These
triumphs are due, in large part, to the members of
the Public Policy council, who pledged more than
$1 million to support the Industry Defense Fund.
IHRSA is participating on a 19-member Joint
Committee, facilitated by NSF International, to
create a voluntary certification process for U.S.
fitness facilities that will strengthen the industry
and raise clubs’ standing as quality providers of
safe and healthy exercise. “A good set of standards
will give us more credibility in the medical community, and physicians will be more likely to refer
patients to health clubs,” explains Dr. Art Curtis,
CEO of Millennium Partners Sports Club Management, LLC and chairman of IHRSA’s board of
directors. “It will also increase the potential for more
insurance reimbursements, and corporations will
be more willing to subsidize memberships for their
employees.”
Club operators are keeping a close watch on
changes to the U.S. health care system. “We’re very
hopeful that the regulatory environment will evolve
in ways that encourage wellness and disease prevention, since we all know this is ultimately the
only way to get spiraling health care costs under
control,” says Curves’ president Mike Raymond.
“We will continue to approach this as a significant

opportunity, recognizing that it may require new
solutions and thinking on our part. This is really
the lesson for the industry. No matter how much
success you’ve achieved in your business, the need
for continued change and evolution never ends.”
MEXICO
In January 2010, the Mexican government introduced a new campaign to battle obesity, which it
estimates to cost the health system $3.2 billion per
year. “Obesity and excess weight are one of the
biggest health challenges that Mexico is facing
today,” said President Felipe Calderón, who noted
that Mexico had the largest number of overweight
adults in the world, its children had the highest rates
in the world for obesity, and diabetes was the
number one cause of death in the country.
The new plan is based on a French project
known as EPODE, which has shown success at
reducing child obesity through physical activities,
weight monitoring and promoting drinking water
and eating fruit and vegetables.
“This presents clubs in Mexico with a tremendous opportunity, and their operators must be
proactive,” says José Antonio Mársico, Director
Ejecutivo for Body Systems México.
Reflecting on the past year, Mársico says there
have been fewer fitness and sport activities, such
as fewer conventions, races and sporting events.
“The economy is still in recession, and the ongoing
drug wars create a lot of insecurity,” he explains.
“Many people don’t want to be outside their homes
after 5:00 in the evening.”
On the upside, Go Fitness and Energy Fitness
Mexico are promising new chains that have ambitious plans of expansion in the country.
“The relationship between price and service
will be key in 2010,” Mársico says. “People will
continue to think twice before paying for a club
membership.” He adds, “The winners will be those
businesses that offer extraordinary service at a fair
price, and human talent will be more important
than high-technology equipment.”
CANADA
“While in the eyes of the world, Canada fared very
well during the first year of the global economic
crisis, the unemployment rate is still above 10%,”
notes David “Patch” Patchell-Evans, GoodLife
Founder & CEO and outgoing Chairperson of IHRSA.
“The further challenge now in our country is new
government legislation that will have a devastating
impact on fitness clubs.”
Patchell-Evans says the one-two punch is the
restructuring of the sales tax (harmonized sales tax
or HST) ranging to 13%, which would greatly increase

undisclosed sum. According to Mastrov, who previously founded 24 Hour Fitness Worldwide, the
newly formed organization is a sizeable one with
well over $50 million in annual revenues. All 13
Fitness World locations were officially re-branded
as Steve Nash Fitness World, and Polessky was
retained to serve as director.
Music copyright fees remain a paramount
concern in Canada. The Neighbouring Rights
Collective of Canada (NRCC) has proposed a music
tariff for the Canadian Fitness Industry of a $18.59
per member per year. “The foremost concern is
that regardless of whether our industry wins or
loses the cases either here or in Australia, the
music industry will refine their greedy tactics and
will continue to pursue outrageous licensing fees in
other countries,” says IHRSA’s Meredith Poppler.
“To stop this threat, IHRSA has contributed over
$400,000 USD over the past two years to help fund
the battles in Canada and Australia, paying for
expert witness testimony, researching pay models
and legal options, and more.”

Curves International

in Argentina, Chile,
Uruguay, Paraguay,
and Bolivia. “We will
operate from Buenos
Aires, addressing the
needs of all franchisees
in these five countries,”
notes Augustine Arola
Nowell, president of
Curves Argentina. The
company aims to double
the number of sites in
South America and to
achieve the scale needed to introduce technological
advances to the region’s current 22 Curves
locations—16 in Argentina, five in Chile and one
in Uruguay. Curves has 230 clubs in Brazil.
ECUADOR
Ecuador is still a very young market for the fitness
industry, and there are numerous external factors
that slow down its growth, according to Enrique La
Motta, Director General of Phisique Wellness Club.
The two foremost factors are government regulation
and consumer behavior, he says.
“Last year, the government introduced a tax

package on all imported goods,” he explains. “The
65% tax on fitness machines and accessories
currently makes it prohibitive for us to consider
any purchases.” La Motta says he expects ongoing
lobbying efforts to succeed in reducing this tax,
perhaps by nearly half to 35%.
La Motta says that Ecuadorian consumers, in
general, are neither educated about nor aware of
the need for a healthy lifestyle. “There are approximately 500 to 600 gyms in the country,” he notes.
“At an average of 200 members per club, that
would mean there are no more than 120,000 club
users, which is equivalent to less than 1% of the
population.” He adds that there is a need for many
more fitness professionals in the country.
CHILE
The economy in the region has been less affected
than in Europe and the USA, according to Mauricio
Musiet, General Manager for Sportlife. “The Chilean
fitness industry remained strong and kept growing
at a fast pace,” he explains. “We have had to be a
little more flexible in terms of prices and forms of
payment, but we have kept our members.”
Sportlife, the only health club company covering
the country from north to south, surpassed its goal
of building over 20 clubs with a total of 30,000
members before 2010, and today boasts 32 clubs
with 40,000 members.
Musiet says the biggest challenge for the Chilean
industry is the need for more professionalism.
“The human resource factor is critical,” he says.
“We’re sending our managers to IHRSA conventions and conferences in other countries, and we
are bringing in speakers from other industries to
train our people on customer service.”
In February 2010, a destructive 8.8-magnitude
earthquake in Chile left hundreds of people dead
and a long swath of the country in smoky rubble.
While this earthquake was far stronger than the
7.0-magnitude one that ravaged Haiti the month
prior, the damage and death toll were far less extensive, in part because of strict building codes put in
place after devastating earthquakes in the past.
BRAZIL
Brazil has nearly 15,000 health clubs, second only in
number to the United States. There has been an
increase in the number of low-cost health clubs,
which are getting their market niche, just as womenonly health clubs have, notes Richard Bilton, President
of Companhia Athletica, and IHRSA Board Director.
“Health club associations are also getting
more and more organized, which in the medium
term means better defenses and representativeness to our sector,” he continues.

spending on vacations, cars or restaurants than
on fitness.

Led by CEO Kilian Fisher, ILAM has begun the
launch of REPS Ireland, the country’s first independent register of exercise professionals, so that clubs
will know that they are employing quality, accredited fitness instructors. “We see the register as part
of the effort to set more standards for our industry,
and enable the consumer to get more value for their
money,” explains Fisher, who also led the development of ILAM White Flag Award for Spa & Leisure,
the Quality Club/Facility Certification standard in
Ireland.
Unfortunately, Ireland’s strong economy, known
as “The Celtic Tiger,” dropped from its peak to
something near the bottom very rapidly, says
Fisher. “We’ve seen job and salary cuts in the
leisure sector and elsewhere, and the government
has brought in two emergency budgets since the
beginning of 2009,” he notes. “We may be heading
to an unemployment rate of 16 percent, and some
property prices have dropped as much as 40
percent.” As part of its emergency measures, the
government has increased taxes on some individuals
as much as 10 percent.
Fisher is hopeful for the future, and believes
quality standards will improve. “Between the White
Flag and the REPS Ireland Register, we’ll have
more qualified instructors and better facilities,” he
says. “I think pricing and programs offered will
have to change, however, as this economy has
taken away any complacency.”

In January 2010, IHRSA announced the appointment of Leila Timergaleeva as an IHRSA International

a club and regional manager at Complete Body
Company, which is based in New York City and plans
new projects in Russia, among other countries.

With 345 facilities, the Konami Sports & Life Co.,
Ltd., continues to be a dominant industry player. It
is the largest club chain in Japan, and, in terms of
its global standing, is the fifth largest in terms of
number of clubs; fourth in total revenues; and
ninth in number of members.
Australia/Oceania
Fitness First Australia has opened its latest club in
Five Dock, a suburb of Sydney, bringing its growing
tally to 91. Siblings Justin McDonell and Jacinta
McDonell Jiminez, the first non-U.S. master franchisees
for Anytime Fitness, have exceeded their first-year
projections for introducing the brand to Australia. In
their first 18 months of business, the pair has sold
more than 55 franchise territories; 23 clubs are
already open and an additional 20 are expected to be
open by midyear. The team has also sold five territories
in New Zealand, where two facilities are already
open. They intend to broaden Anytime Fitness’ presence in the two countries to 300 clubs by 2014.
In Australia, the PPCA (Phonographic Performance
Company of Australia) proposed a tariff on the
Australian fitness industry that is equivalent to
approximately $4.54 USD per member per month.
The Tariff Tribunal in Australia spent five weeks in
hearings on this proposed tariff increase. Efforts are
underway to protect clubs from this harmful proposal.

Fitness Industry Weathered Global
Economic Woes with Solid 2009 Performance
T
he global health club industry posted a solid performance in 2009.
A near $70 billion industry, over 128,000 health clubs served 119 million
members. The industry was particularly strong in Europe, where revenue
reached $31 billion and 42.5 million consumers belonged to health clubs.
In North America, 53.1 million members used 38,000 facilities. The
Asia-Pacific region has remained steady with over $10 billion generated in revenues
and nearly 16 million members.
The Americas
Long-thought to set the pace for all markets, the U.S. health club industry
increased revenue by two percent to $19.5 billion. The number of health
clubs declined slightly to 29,750, while membership remained statistically
the same with 45.3 million members. Of these, roughly 23 percent, or
10.4 million, were new members. In addition, 7.2 million consumers used
health clubs as non-members in 2009.
The Canadian market held steady, generating $2.1 billion in revenues
with the patronage of an estimated 5.3 million members. GoodLife Fitness
leads club companies in Canada with revenues of nearly $275 million generated in 2009 from over 250 clubs. World Health was also a key player in
2009, generating $51 million from more than 100,000 members.
Latin American markets posted solid performances in 2009. In Brazil,
nearly 4.7 million people attended 15,000 clubs in 2009, contributing to a
market size of $1.6 billion. The health club industry in Argentina served
over one million members in 5,200 facilities.

four percent increase in club memberships from 40.7 million in 2008 to
42.5 million in 2009.
Results from an annual survey conducted by the Leisure Database
Company shows a slight increase in number of U.K. clubs from 5,755 in
2008 to 5,795 in 2009. Membership also increased from 7.2 million in

Budget and circuit-training chains have fueled industry growth for the German
market. Mrs. Sporty finished the year with 338 clubs as McFit served nearly 1 million
members in over 100 locations. Overall, the German market generated $3.4 billion in
industry revenue through 5,900 clubs, which held a total of 7 million memberships.
Recent agreements between DIFG and Creditreform may make credit more available
to health club operators, potentially affecting in a future increase in facilities.
Fitness participation holds a strong presence in the Netherlands, evident by a 2007
study by WJH Mulier Institute that found roughly 2.9 million consumers used health
and fitness clubs. In 2009, 2.4 million consumers belonged to 2,000 Dutch health
clubs. According to the Marketing Report – Fitness Industry 2010 for the Netherlands,
ten percent of clubs are part of a chain such as Fitness First or HealthCity. The trio
of Optisport, Achmea and HealthCity constitute the key club companies growing the
fitness market in the Netherlands.
Asia-Pacific
Once regarded as an untapped market, the Asia-Pacific region is home to a number
of successful club companies such as Central Sports and Konami in Japan and Ozone
Fitness and Shenzhen Catic Wellness in China. Other notable players in the region
include Australia’s Goodlife Operations and Lifestyle Fitness Australia.
The Japanese fitness market generated an estimated $3.4 billion in 2009 with 5,000
health clubs. According to Club Business Japan, new club openings were slow in 2009
as club closings and consolidation dominated health club business transactions. Club
operators must find ways to attract the younger public, many of which dropped their
memberships last year. The emergence of new, flexible membership options in Japan
may prove helpful in attracting a younger population, typically more price-sensitive
than veteran members.
China’s fitness market remains a leader in the Asia-Pacific region with over 3 million
members frequenting 1,800 health clubs. According to a recent article on the Chinese
fitness market in the IDEA Fitness Journal, a variety of group-oriented exercise programming is popular among consumers. Classes with elements of martial arts and
dance along with yoga and Pilates are popular among members.
Over 2.5 million Australians belonged to one of 2,800 health clubs, adding to the
profitability of the overall market, which generated $1.9 billion in 2009. Fitness
Australia has found continued growth in the weight-loss circuit and personal training
models in Australia. Women-only clubs such as Curves and Contours Express have
flourished in Australia.
Last year proved to be a challenge to the global economy as a whole, but the fitness
industry weathered economic woes with solid performance. Led by successful club
companies and a consumer public in need of the stress-relieving benefits of exercise,
global industry revenues were solid with increases in total number of memberships
and health club facilities. With strong leadership and a firm understanding of
consumer needs, global markets should anticipate further growth in 2010.

When your goal is just to sell a product, your Olympic bar design is finished when it’s “good enough”.
For example, a tensile strength of 150,000 PSI is “strong enough” for most manufacturers. We heat
treat our stainless steel bar to 218,000 PSI, because our tests tell us anything weaker will bend.
Most think bar stock is “straight enough” if it meets the mill standard of 89/1000 inch over the 7 foot
length of the bar. We fur ther straighten our bar to a tolerance of 10/1000 inch, because anything less
straight will cause rotational torque during heavy lifting. Most think there is a coating or plating that is
“durable enough”. We chose stainless steel because it needs no coating, so there’s nothing to peel
off, chip, or rust. Most think a bar is “safe enough” just because it's made of steel. We ultrasonic test
and magnetic par ticle test ever y bar to detect internal and external cracks that can cause the bar to
snap. The International Powerlifting Federation (I.P.F.) counts our stainless steel Olympic bar among the
ver y few that it approves for International Competition. We appreciate the endorsement, I.P.F., but we’re
pressing ahead with Design No. 124 anyway.
