SARA CLUTTON RHEOLWRAIG THEATR thehafren.co.uk Spring1-10.indd 2 22/12/2014 10:17 WELCOME Welcome to 2015, and we’ve certainly pushed the boat out to entertain and inspire you this Spring. A feast of comedy is heading your way to distract you from the General Election. Alan Carr, Pam Ayres, The Reduced Shakespeare Company and Andy Parsons will certainly brighten up your evenings. Music is available from Sean Lakeman and Kathryn Roberts, the World Class Cory Brass Band, Rhydian Roberts and in celebration of the Birthday of Billie Holiday, enjoy the jazz tones of The Lady Sings the Blues. A packed programme of music, drama, children’s favourites and dance all await you so come on out and enjoy a night at your local theatre – providing quality evenings out at a bargain price. Don’t forget to support our wonderful Montgomeryshire Young Farmers Festival in February – it’s Pantomime time – oh yes it is! Our plans to enhance the building and the facilities move on apace. With the Feasibility Study now concluded, we are entering into a development phase to secure our funding. Hafren has been a success story by growing its income turnover and number of performances year on year. Our Education and Outreach programme is taking place all over Montgomeryshire despite only being two years old. We have undertaken public consultation into what you want and a very clear message has come back – you want more. In order to house any more shows and workshops we need to have more space and the addition of a studio, music recording and rehearsal spaces are crucial to our development. Head over to thehafren.co.uk to take a look at our plans. We’re also joining up with many more theatres in Wales to promote a new system for our customers with disabilities. Hynt will be a national scheme, which provides a medically based assessment of an individual’s needs. We hope that this scheme will be launched in April, so please contact the Box Office if you feel that you will need to have access to wheelchair spaces or any other facility. Finally, thank you for all your support in 2014. Let’s make 2015 our best year yet. Remember the most positive way to contribute is to just buy a ticket and enjoy a fabulous night out in return. Go on, try something new – an evening of magic perhaps, a movie screening, bring the children to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment… The list is endless. All the very best for 2015, from all the Hafren team. He was able to match his skill in voice production and choral management with the enthusiasm and commitment of some of North Wales’ finest male choral singers and during his 15 years, had established a male chorus with a very special sound and quality. Our current Musical Director, Aled Wyn Edwards, who lives in Llangefni, is also blessed with an abundance of musical talent and is keen to nurture new exciting voices as well as promoting the established singers. In March 2012, Aled was appointed as the Musical Director of Cantorion, until that point he sang as a chorister and was the choir’s deputy accompanist. He relished the opportunity to take the helm and lead the choir into its third decade, maintaining the choir’s tradition whilst bringing his own influence and experience to its performances. Set in the decadent world of Victorian London, a beautiful, narcissistic young man called Dorian Gray becomes infatuated by the exquisite portrait that Basil Hallward has painted of him. He makes a Faustian pact that he will remain forever young while the picture grows old. Combining drawing room comedy and Gothic horror, this is a gripping and hugely entertaining theatrical event. Graham went on to become a teacher of Art in secondary schools for 30+ years. CHRISTINE HASLOCK Christine Haslock was born on Christmas Day 1953. Educated in Lancashire, Wiltshire and Wales, she studied Fine Art at Liverpool, specialising in Ceramics, where she met Graham Haslock. She trained to be an Art teacher and finished her teaching career working with Graham at Llandrindod High School. During her first year of early retirement Christine studied Botanical Illustration under the inspirational teacher Moya Davern, following several more courses with her in order to study watercolour painting. Christine’s work is inspired by plants, and she likes to combine them with everyday objects in still-life groups that have some connection to the Golden Age Dutch still-life paintings that she admires. ANNA HASLOCK Anna Haslock was born in Hertfordshire in 1982 but quickly moved to mid Wales and was educated in Llandrindod Wells. Foundation studies in Art and Design at Falmouth University were followed by a degree in Illustration at Camberwell University in London. She began work on setting up her sustainable screen printing business ‘Annaprints’ in 2012. Her interest in sustainability, her friends and family and her simple quiet lifestyle in the country have all gone into her designs. TACT ART EXHIBITION FEBRUARY - MAY 2015 We are pleased to be hosting an exhibition to showcase the artistic talent of young people in Wales who are in the care of TACT foster carers. Providing children with high quality foster care is at the heart of what we do. As a charity, we passionately believe that all children deserve to live in friendly, safe and stable homes. At TACT we strive to make the entire fostering process as straightforward as possible for those interested in becoming a foster carer. The exhibition is a sample of some of the best pieces of work that TACT Cymru art group has created over the last few years. The exhibition is free to attend and there’ll be an opportunity to buy some of the work. Proceeds from any sales will go directly to the young people themselves. In October 2011 a TACT staff member started up a small arts group in Mid Wales and invited young people in care to join and express themselves through painting and drawing. The group has proven to be very successful, uncovering some real talent and providing an outlet for the young people’s creativity. From 2012 the group has received funding and support from The Ashley Family Foundation. Laura Ashley’s retired designer, Brian Jones, joined the group as a tutor and has been instrumental in helping the young people produce work of real quality and originality. During 2014 the art group exhibited twice at The Norwegian Arts Centre Cardiff Bay. 36 B O O K O N L I N E AT T H E H A F R E N . C O .
