Founded in 1973 by Piet and Ina va Eijken, Netherlands
rug specialist Danskina is known the world over for its pioneering use of color, materials, and techniques. Now under the
ownership of sister companies Maharam and Kvadrat, the
line is making its official U.S. debut as Danskina by Maharam,
with the first collection by newly named design director Hella
Jongerius. Among the inaugural 19 patterns, all handwoven in
wool, is Multitone, its plaid reminiscent of a cozy blanket.

A new exploration into interior space-making, Molo’s Thin Softwall, designed by
Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen, is having its North American debut. Measuring just
3 ½ inches wide, the flexible honeycomb structure expands to 40 times its compressed size.

Conceived for Bernhardt Design by Claudia and Harry Washington out of
a need for seating that’s moveable, open and comfortable, with no hard edges,
Mitt sports a relaxed form and is named for its stitching reminiscent of a baseball glove. Its maple frame is covered in molded foam that can be upholstered
in Bernhardt Textiles fabrics or leathers as well as COM.

Make haste! You won’t want to miss Todd Bracher, this morning’s keynote presenter, at 8:00AM. The talented
furniture and object designer’s resume ranges from head of Tom Dixon’s design studio to creative director at
Georg Jensen. Now, he heads up his eponymous Brooklyn firm, where he conceives much-coveted minimalist
works in varied media.
Tuesday’s session comes courtesy of cognitive psychologist and author Scott Barry Kaufman, who will discuss
the intersection of intelligence, creativity, and personality. His talk will shed light on how to inspire employees
in the workplace and how we can follow our individual paths to greatness.
Two Wednesday speakers top off the series. Adrian D. Smith of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture takes
the stage at 8:00AM, designer/engineer Tom Eich at 9:30AM. Smith’s oeuvre includes some of the most recognizable global landmarks, such as the Burj Khalifa—the world’s tallest structure—in Dubai. Eich is a partner at
IDEO innovation/consulting firm working at the nexus of technology, systems, and products; his far-reaching
output encompasses everything from school cafeteria systems to nail-polish packaging.

The collaboration crusade finds a comrade in Interior Design Hall of Fame member Patricia Urquiola, and a fellow traveler in
Haworth, as they join to unveil Openest. Stitched details on soft textiles lend a cozy residential touch to sofas, which facilitate laid-back

Dead space comes alive with Kalyde, a new ensemble of modular furnishings at Safco Products
with a singular objective: transforming underused areas into productive exchange centers. Designer
George Simons conceived the series based on the manufacturer’s research on the dynamics of
communication in casual spaces. Lobbies, hallways, and other generic spaces are primary
targets for the range of lightweight benches, available with or without support bolsters,

Adam Yarinsky have a solution. Their ARO Planks for FilzFelt
connect to configure custom acoustic wall systems across

offices. German-milled wool felt, available in 63 Pantone
colors, is vacuum-formed to acoustic foam or PET substrate

Interior Design Association’s annual Interior Design Competition invites
entries in the categories of corporate office; cultural, educational, or
institutional; government or municipal; health care; hospitality; retail
or showroom; and residential. There’s also an overall winner, drawn
from all seven categories. Additionally, a winner is chosen for the Will
Ching Design Competition, celebrating commercial projects by firms
with five employees or fewer. Selections were made by a U.S. and
Canadian jury comprising Champalimaud managing director Edmond
Bakos, Aidlin Darling Designs’s David Darling, Bank of America
Corporation senior vice president of store design and merchandising
Ray Ehscheid, and Munge Leung’s
Alessandro Munge. Projects in all categories were judged for their suitability
and originality, with special attention
paid to the integration of finishes and
furnishings. And it appears that the IIDA
and Interior Design see eye to eye, as
the magazine had already published
four of the winners: a community center
by Perkins + Will, an office building by
Gensler, an apartment by Steve Leung
Designers, and a hotel by Stonehill &
Taylor Architects.

Imagine that your pops is known as Mr. Espresso, the pioneering Oakland purveyor who started out wholesaling to the likes of
Chez Panisse. When you grow up, you might very well launch your own gourmet java chain across the bay, in San Francisco. And that’s
exactly what Luigi Di Ruocco has done with his Coffee Bar cafés, bringing beverages based on artisanal oak-roasted Mr. Espresso beans to
a new generation of connoisseurs. “They’ve taken it to the level of wine,” J. Hulett Jones of Jones/Haydu notes.
He and Paul Haydu transformed 1,000 square feet on the ground level of a parking garage into the latest Coffee Bar location—the
winner of the IIDA’s Will Ching Design Competition for commercial projects by small firms. Adding seismic re­inforcement along the street
facade allowed Jones/Haydu to blow a hole in the unwelcoming blank concrete and install an 8-foot-wide glass accordion door. The remaining concrete wall is concealed behind tongue-and-groove cedar planks that had been charred to varying degrees, off-site, to produce a fading effect.
“It’s all done by hand, the way they use torches to add caramel­ization to crème brûlée,” Haydu explains of this Japanese-style charcoal
finish. Continuing indoors, the same wood fronts a storage bulkhead that morphs into the service counter. Here, a sealant prevents the
black from rubbing off on patrons’ clothes. —Craig Kellogg

There are trees and tranquillity to spare in Markham, Ontario. What was missing in this growing
Toronto suburb, however, was a full complement of civic amenities to accompany a commercial densification already well under way—in traditional red brick. That’s when Perkins + Will broke ground, next
to a hospital, for the Cornell Community Centre and Library.
A bridge connecting the hospital to the 125,000-square-foot newcomer allows doctors to give lectures to the public and everyone to share the medical library. But there’s much more. The facility’s multiple offerings embrace “a broader notion of wellness,” Perkins + Will design principal Duff Balmer says.
From the atrium, with its sawtooth roof, visitors not hitting the books can proceed to the aquatic
center on the opposite side. The latter’s star attractions are two swimming pools, one of them olympicsize, and a sunny yellow water slide, intended to lure hard-to-reach teens. Balmer also supplied a
maple-floored gymnasium for non-swimmers and rehearsal space for community musicians.
These various attractions are wrapped and unified by a distinctly contemporary envelope. Bluetinged, black-speckled brick, for example, appears on walls outside before marching right through the
atrium and library, as column cladding. For color accents, Balmer didn’t just paint. His more luminous
solution: window glass laminated with playful shades of green, yellow, and orange. —Craig Kellogg

its Zinta sofa modules by Lievore Altherr Molina. Poised on slender legs in
painted aluminum, the sharp profile of the oak shell, in one of three finishes,
is slightly softened by cushions offered in numerous cover and filling options.
Specify a single module as a freestanding sofa, or combine multiples to

As a birthday tribute to the Bernhardt Furniture
Company, founded in 1889, upstart Bernhardt Design’s
president, Jerry Helling, challenged three European
talents to rethink traditional furniture archetypes for
21st-century consumption. Ross Lovegrove updated
the courthouse chair with Anne, a true melding of
past and present, since achieving the walnut frame’s
sinuous silhouette requires both master carvers and
CNC machines. Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance’s Harper
lends aerodynamic élan to the porch rocking chair, its
Windsor-informed maple spindles reinforcing a seamless ribbon of cherry. And the Alex sofa by Jephson
Robb simplifies the chesterfield by replacing the usual
tufting with one continuous welt, though the opulent
flavor lingers in bronze-banded walnut legs.

In an era inundated by technology, it’s easy to forget the
comfort of simpler times. New Vintage harks back to unplugged
eras by replicating the look of antique rugs, but through the
modern-day format of modular carpet planks. Tone-on-tone neutrals and over-dyed brights play equally well on the 12-by-36-inch
tiles, constructed from the manufacturer’s high-performance Duracolor nylon, which promises stain resistance and colorfastness.

Renovations run rampant in spring, so it’s the perfect time to freshen
up Elective Elements, the office giant’s popular system of open-plan and
private-office furnishings. Legs on storage units and work surfaces have been
scaled down to address a more residential aesthetic, while full-width modesty
panels and thin metal blade shelves help lighten and simplify the overall
look. Among new surface options are five metallic finishes and 18 colors of
back-painted glass.

While social media flourishes and virtual communities cluster, Suzanne Tick imagines
a softer path on the information superhighway. Her Code series translates digital connections into the tactile medium of modular carpet, with bright colors blocked against a static
graphic backdrop. In small-scale and large-format versions, they coordinate with Metri, a
textured-loop solid in vibrant shades like Electric Blue and Glow-Light Green. Both are
constructed from Dynex, the manufacturer’s proprietary solution-dyed nylon.

Vintage enthusiasts rejoice. Alexander Girard’s playful Color
Wheel ottoman, a sought-after collectors item discontinued in the
1970’s, is available again. So too, is the Eames Upholstered Molded
Fiberglass armchair and side chair in a new fiberglass finish—but
with the same beloved fiberglass-thread striations and variations
of Charles and Ray’s original. Available in eight archival colors, the
chair shells can be upholstered in one of 17 colors of Girard’s Hopsak,
another discontinued product now back in play. Girard also dabbled
in silk-screened panels of stand-alone images. A dozen of the 40 he
designed for the manufacturer in 1972 are being rereleased, including Ribbons, Bouquet, and Black and White.

of post-consumer recycled polyester and
nylon, playful moons and half-moons
rise from alternating columns of tight and

for Rustique, a textural solid in solutiondyed polyester, the soft tonal variations
achieved by crossing fine yarns of the
warp with two colors of heavier yarn in

Marie Eklund persuaded choreographer Alexander Ekman to gather a consortium of theatrical and creative types for three days
of talent-storming in Stockholm. The
sessions spawned Silence, a series
of vinyl flooring in two varieties: an
Inca-inspired four-color pattern,
sold in rolls, and six solid colors,
offered in tiles or parquet-referencing planks. Later this year,
the company will add soundabsorbent backing, perfect
for the rehearsal studio.

the high-pressure plastic laminates of the Parade series,
are as durable as they are colorful. The patterns, offered
in three colorways each, comprise Derby, a composition

To simulate the effect of paint seeping though the reverse side of a canvas, Overlay/
Underlay vinyl wall coverings rely on translucent ink. Interior Design Hall of Fame member
Kevin Walz began with pencil sketches, then painted the designs on linen, allowing the
colors to truly penetrate. Scans of both sides, overlapped, ultimately created the five patterns, which resemble silk-screened or block-printed fabric. Marz mixes rows of truncated
spheres with arcs and intersecting lines. In Jax, shapes familiar from the childhood game
form a grid set against diamonds—a perfect coordinate for the more conspicuous diamond
shapes of Dimon. Two-color Honeykom is sweetness itself. For Nite, Walz used brushes in
six widths to layer paint over the course of three days.

a crowd. Latest to be welcomed are
Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings. Their
studio, Scholten & Baijings, is known
for applying unaffected minimalism
and punchy color to furniture, tabletop,
flooring, and bedding, and the same
now goes for upholstery fabric. Color
fields interface with stripes in Blocks, its
tone-on-tone effect realized through weft
stripping and weave structure. Mean­
while, overlapping transparent layers
create the parallel and perpendicular
lines of Grid. Both wool-nylon patterns,
offered in a handful of colorways, boast
vertical repeats of more than 27 feet.

Half of the menu touts bistro classics such as roasted bone marrow and bone-in dry-aged
rib-eye. But fried chicken and smoked whitefish Caesar salad serve up a soupçon of Americana—as does the wait staff, donning blue jeans and tattoos. If the dining area’s booked up,
sneak down to the speakeasy-esque parlor below for a Dark & Stormy.

Right off the lobby of the Aloft Chicago City Center hotel, concrete flooring, exposed wooden
beams, and open mechanicals make for an industrial loftlike experience. Low-hanging ferns
and accordion glass doors open to the street soften the vibe. The menu proudly proclaims,
“Taste over Trend,” and the motto comes through in the rather eclectic mix of foods. Instead
of choosing one head chef for the restaurant, there are three, and each contributes a different flair and flourish. On the same menu as truffled pasta, there’s skirt steak chimichurri with
shishito peppers. There’s also a coffee bar, offering fresh-squeezed juice and honey butter
cinnamon rolls—perfect for those off to an early start at the Mart.

How many times have you fallen victim to cocktail amnesia? The bartender asks you for your
drink of choice and you’re struck dumb, unable to utter your order. The Berkshire Room,
inside the Acme Hotel, has found a solution to this pickle: the Dealer’s Choice, in which the
bartender determines your poison. Just choose a spirit base and give a couple adjectives to
guide the decision. A few minutes later, a custom drink appears at your table, and the name
hardly matters. Too avant-garde for your taste? Not to worry, the menu provides standard
house cocktails and barrel-aged beverages. Settle into the swanky plush seating and bask in
the glow of the copper-pipe pendants.

The culinary wasteland of Hyde Park, home to institutions such as the University of Chicago,
has long been waiting for a restaurant to pull it from the oblivion of cheap bars and late-night
bites. Chef Matthias Merges took note. Named for the scenic highway that runs between the
Cote d’Azur and the Italian Riviera, A10’s menu is a hybrid of French and Italian influences.
The kitchen crew doesn’t cut corners as seen by items such as a 60-minute egg served alongside a crispy lamp belly and gnocchi cake. Carefully tempered at a low temperature, the yolk
and white come together to a perfect custard, a rich sauce for the dish. Just as the kitchen
pays attention to its craft, the design of the space is equally thought out. Led by Merges’s wife
Rachel Crowl of FCStudio, the restaurant bridges the two cultures with traditional textiles from
both countries hung on walls.

Don’t let the name deceive you. Cicchetti, Venetian slang for snack, may seem like it offers
only light fare, but it doesn’t. The menu begins with small plates for the table: Think housecured anchovies and pork cracklins dusted with Parmesan and rosemary. Once the palate is
tempted, a procession of foods representative of the Italian port city are available: bruschetta,
salad, stews, pastas, meats. The environment feels less like a trattoria and more like a food
hall, with guests happily packed in among exposed wood beams and bare tables. If the din
becomes too much, escape to the bar area, modeled after Venice’s iconic Harry’s Bar.

Cicchetti
Aviary [$]
Rocks glasses appear from smoking chests. Elixirs steep in miniature French presses. Ingredients swirl in transparent porthole-shape containers. These are some of the wonders at chef
Grant Achatz’s cocktail lounge. Drinks expand far beyond taste, highlighting the importance of
smell, sight, and touch to the overall imbibing experience. Though they are served à la carte,
the lounge's multicourse formats are encouraged, the cocktails taking on the arc of a meal: a
lighter option to start, moving to more substantial offerings, and ending with a sweet digestif
concoction. The theatricality of each presentation is heightened by the glassware by Martin
Kastner, a masterful designer who has long worked on products for the highly acclaimed
Alinea. The show will leave you not only tipsy but also utterly astounded.

Balena [$]
It’s no secret that Chicago has an, err, deep history with pizza-making. Newcomer Balena,
headed by chef Chris Pandel, throws its hat into the ring with such topping innovations as
pistachio pesto, rhubarb, and leeks. Not to worry, the trusty Margherita is available, too.
The pizzas are complemented by traditional pastas as well as breads freshly baked by Peter
Becker, previously of Charlie Trotter’s. But there’s more. A selection of grilled and roasted
meats round out the feast. Grab a group and try them all.

Chef Enoch Simpson has gained a cult following for a particular fried pastry: doughnuts, with
funky flavors like butterscotch-bacon and strawberry-vanilla. The selection varies daily, and
there are never any leftovers. Now in his own space, Simpson has expanded beyond fried
dough to other American comfort foods. Fried chicken and chicken pot pie are the standouts
on the dinner menu, served alongside a rotating selection of locally crafted beers on tap.
But the biggest sensations are the biscuits, which by themselves have gained the restaurant
national recognition. The brunch menu even devotes an entire section to biscuit sandwiches.
The homey environs showcase a sprawling bar and feature wall both constructed of reclaimed
wood end pieces, thus the eatery’s moniker.

Here, the beer hall is reimagined. And for the better, with exposed brick, Persian carpet, and
tin ceiling panels. It’s not only the décor that's received a fresh spin. Chef Jared Wentworth
goes far beyond pretzels and peanuts to accompany the impressive roster of beers. A menu
given to Asian and Southern influences also features multiple daily specials that highlight
seasonal produce, such as green garlic, rhubarb, and spring onion. Two dozen beers on tap
are supplemented with a rotating lineup that recalls the building’s history as a Czech pub.
While the food and the beverages are delicious separate, the staff can recommend tasty pairings. With so much on the table, it’s no wonder this is a rising neighborhood hub.

MONDAY
A back alley of Chicago’s West Loop isn’t the best place to wander around, but the tantalizing
scent wafting through will draw any hungry Mart-goer off the street. That scent is Green Street
Smoked Meats’s 12,000-pound oak smoker, bringing forth succulent Texas-style barbeque:
meat that’s sticky with a thick coat of rub seasonings and infused with mesquite charcoal. In
a convivial atmosphere, guests sit at long farmhouse tables and serve themselves from a large
counter. And while the food may not be considered gourmet, it's wonderfully authentic right
down to the family picnic sides and the Frito pie with brisket chili. Once you're sufficiently
stuffed—and you surely will be—gaze up at the hundreds of strung light bulbs and imagine
it’s the sky of the Lone Star State.

Stumbling off Ashland Avenue late in the evening, the Midwest suddenly seems miles away. A
snug and bustling space occupied by a communal high-top table and chicken-wire cabinets
laden with ephemera is the latest outpost of the team behind Ruxbin restaurant. The crew,
which includes chef Edward Kim, promises to deliver the post-service cravings of culinary
professionals to the general public. What comes forth is a loosely Asian menu with Korean,
Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and even Mexican influences. Perhaps it’s better termed
as “street food.” While the familiar steamed dumplings make an appearance, duck hearts &
strawberries and crab brain fried rice will intrigue the most daring of eaters.

A chubby-cheeked chipmunk sipping an effervescent red soda greets guests at Spritzburger,
a diner-style establishment. But within moments, it’s evident that this is not your grandpa’s
diner. The collaboration between three chef friends—Dan Smith, Steve McDonagh, and Gale
Gand—came about after a boozy discussion in the lobby of a Disney hotel. The playfulness
and whimsy of that late-night talk comes through in the décor as well as the menu. Sidling
up to the robin’s-egg-blue soda counter, beverages like housemade root beer or mandarin
orange soda are reminiscent of 1950’s floats and creamsicles. The good ole’ American burger
gets a 21st-century makeover with such toppings as dried plum, pickled walnuts, or sage
gravy. Be sure to save room for dessert.

Tanta [$]
Coming from the man who has been heralded as the champion of Peruvian cuisine, Tanta is
the latest project from chef Gastón Acurio, who now has more than 30 Peruvian restaurants
worldwide. Tanta, meaning bread in Quechua, is not on the menu, though there is more than
enough sustenance in other forms. What may at first seem to be a daunting litany of foreign
terms—tiraditos, anticuchos, causitas—is quickly decoded by an able staff. And maybe a
pisco cocktail or two. Most dishes are small plates, just a couple bites, encouraging sharing,
nibbling, and broadening the palate. While all can be enjoyed in the ipe-paneled interior
accented with bright Peruvian pop art and textiles, for warm summer evenings, the rooftop
deck is the place to be, a tasting of ceviche the perfect cool-down.

Trenchermen [$]
Nico was a woman of many talents: singer, fashion model, actress. Playing in Fellini’s La
Dolce Vita and later becoming a muse to Andy Warhol, the bohemian free spirit now inspires
Nico Osteria, the latest restaurant by chef Paul Kahan and the One Off Hospitality team, which
counts Avec and Blackbird among its empire. Like its inspiration, the establishment accomplishes many things with extraordinary skill. Only a glance at the menu makes one realize
that Italian and Chicago mean much more than deep-dish pizza. Mussels in a vermouth and
almond-butter broth, grilled octopus with preserved lemon, gnocchi with Dungeness crab
and uni—the choices are inventive, each more enticing than the previous. The space, which
is inside the Thompson Chicago hotel, also presents several options: the bar in view of the
open kitchen, the salon with a double-height green wall and copper-pipe bar, and the dining
room with a bespoke wrought-iron wine storage unit. There’s not a bad spot in the house.

MONDAY
To walk into Trenchermen is to meet a century of design philosophies at once. Clusters of
exposed Edison bulbs and black-iron pipes, distinctly steam punk, meet art deco lighting
fixtures and floor tile. Original white subway tile, dating to the 20’s, harkens back to the
building’s days as the Luxor Russian Baths. Just like the design, the seasonal new American
menu presents a gamut of influences, from the tuna tartare served with yuzu and hoisin to
the octopus in a posole broth with masa. Instead of clashing, design and cuisine both come
together to form a new and contemporary take on dining. And in the style of modern restaurants, Trenchermen’s reminds its guests, “There’s a time for elbows off the table, but that’s not
a thing we ask of you. This is cooking for the everyman.”

including this one of New York window cleaner Bernabe Mendez, speak

Hurry, it’s last days to see silk screens by Andy Warhol
alongside sculptures by his Venezuelan friend Marisol Escobar, the
two seen here in a 1963 photograph. The exhibition, through June
15, includes Marisol’s characteristic painted-wood Six Women along with two
she made of Warhol, who reciprocated by putting her in one of his films.
A separate exhibition presents the mobiles and stabiles of Alexander Calder.
The works—including the Chat-mobile from 1966—span from 1927 to 1974, just

Chicago Architecture Foundation
“Chicago: City
of Big Data”
The vast city model that fills the foundation’s atrium, seen
here on opening night, has been digitally enhanced for this
exhibition. A light installation turns the model into a 3-D canvas
for infographics, while a digital interface designed in partnership
with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill layers the swarms of data that
planners might consult when constructing the built environment
over an interactive wall map. Passersby can read tweets and
real-time transit information projected on digital dashboards in
