Welcome

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director
Presents
hank you for being with us for Swift Justice, a compelling true home-town
story, kicking off the second half of our 15th season, Coming Home.
We are honored to bring to the stage this historic local chapter that has so
many facets and repercussions. I am grateful to have such a brilliantly talented
cast and staff to bring to life the people who were centrally involved with these
tragic events. In Karen Altree Piemme, we are fortunate to have a fine director,
who is also a gifted dramaturg, to work with playwright Tom McEnery to shape
this infamous piece of San Jose history and provide us all with a glimpse into
what happened that November in 1933.
Having History San Jose as our designated non-profit partner has been a true
partnership, a collaborative merging of two organizations for the benefit of the
community.
I am especially grateful to have you with us, for without you there is no “play.”
Your presence makes the difference. Thank you!
I look forward to having you back with us in February for the charming musical
I Do, I Do.

hank you for joining us for this world premiere of Swift Justice by Tom
McEnery. The development of this play has been a two-year journey for
Tabard, the playwright, and the many artists who have shaped the play
you are about to see. This journey could not have started, however, without the
generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Thanks to a
two-year grant from Knight, we were able to include a ten-minute excerpt of
Swift Justice in last season’s 10 in 10: Perspective! From there the play was
further developed into a full-length drama. The Knight Foundation has been a
major contributor to the arts in San Jose over the years and we thank them for
helping us to bring this chapter of San Jose history to life. Thank you for being
with us and enjoy the show!
Be a part of it. Tabard.

Director’s Note
Tabard offers its sincere and grateful appreciation to...
John Palmer, RuthE Stein, Palo Alto Players, and all our season
subscribers, donors, sponsors, and community partners
who helped make this production possible.
We apologize for any omissions due to our print deadline.
There will be a 15-minute intermission.
San Jose is full of community pride. Residents turn out each year for such events as
JazzFest and Cinequest, there is a great deal of civic engagement, and community
traditions such as Christmas in the Park have grown exponentially to become fixtures in
the cultural landscape. We honor and acknowledge our roots in agriculture, and our
history as the “Valley of Heart’s Delight.” We are the big city with the small town feel.
However, as the philosopher/essayist/poet/novelist George Santayana said, “Those who
cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” and San Jose has in her history
an event which, at the time, united the community for one horrific instant, after which no
one spoke of it again for decades and few know about today. Somehow the citizenry
allowed themselves to be swept up in a frenzy of vigilantism and commit unspeakable acts
in the name of justice. But when our sorrow, our anger and our fear overtake us, what
occurs is not justice, and the shame we feel in the wake of such an atrocity prevents us
from looking our neighbors in the eye, looking ourselves in the mirror, and stunts the
growth of a community on the cusp of fulfilling its potential.
It is naïve to think that something like this could never happen again, and it is exactly that
assumption that brings us perilously close to being “condemned to repeat” something we
never could have imagined would occur in the first place. So let’s talk about it — together —
and agree to commit ourselves to moving our city forward with true justice, equality and rights
for everyone in this incredibly diverse and dynamic community that has so much to offer.
A portion of Tabard’s
concession proceeds from this
production will be donated to
Be engaged. Tabard.
Time well spent. Tabard.

Meet the Artists
Timothy Huls (Brooke Hart et al) is a stage and screen actor living
in San Francisco. He is thrilled to make Swift Justice his first Tabard
production. Previous performances include Cymbeline (Marin
Shakespeare) and Richard III (Marin Shakespeare). Three of his
commercials have been featured on national networks such as ESPN,
HULU, and MTV2. Tim also works as a teaching artist and video
editor. He wishes to thank his Bay Area family for the love, and Erin
for her unconditional support. TimHuls.com
Salim Razawi (Rossi/Thurmond) is thrilled to be making his Tabard
debut. He has performed with TheatreWorks, Pacific Coast Repertory
Theatre, Berkeley Playhouse, Golden Thread Productions, Tri-Valley
REP, Livermore Shakespeare Festival, and SF Shakespeare Festival.
Most recent credits include playing Chino in the Broadway By the
Bay’s TBA-nominated production of West Side Story. When not on
stage Salim is a director and teaching artist for children’s theatre.
Additionally he can be seen on a featured TEDx Talk.
Drew Benjamin Jones (Jack Holmes et al) appears in his first show
at Tabard. He graduated from San Jose State with a degree in theatre
arts and was awarded the Hal Todd Award for Excellence in Acting.
Some of his favorite productions include ShakesBEERience with
Buck Hill Productions, The Whipping Man (Caleb) with Renegade
Theatre Experiment, Matthew Briar (Raymond) with Epic Immersive,
and The Tempest (Caliban) with Silicon Valley Shakespeare. Special
thanks to Karen, Tom, and Tabard for this awesome experience!
Keith Sullivan (Rabbi Karesh et al) performed as David Darling in
Cat’s-Paw, as Homer Van Fleet in Night of January 16th, and acted,
“danced,” and played classical ballet pieces on the xylophone — in
character — as Ed Carmichael in You Can’t Take it With You. He’s
donned the characters of priest, salesman, narrator, deliveryman, and
cowboy as well as the lead role in A Christmas Story. Swift Justice
marks his first Tabard show. Theatre aside, Keith enjoys on-camera
acting, screenwriting, playing guitar, and writing songs.
Denee Lewis (Nettie Hart et al) is excited to return to Tabard, where
she was last seen as Ima in The Immigrant. An actress in the area for
many years, Denee’s recent credits include Brooke in Other Desert
Cities at Limelight Theater Company and Meredith in Last Night at
Pintello Comedy Theater. Other favorites include Sis in Queen of
Bingo at Northside Theatre Company and Claire in Proof at South
Valley Civic Theater. Denee thanks her family for all their love and
support while she continues in her acting endeavors.
Jeff Swan (Alex Hart et al) is glad to be back on the stage with
Tabard Theater several years after performing in Antigone in the
Oval Office. Jeff has also performed as Edward Carr in Wrecks, a
one-man play by Neil LaButte. Other work includes Artie in House of
Blue Leaves; Light in the Piazza; Greg in Sylvia; Ross in The Goat,
or Who is Sylvia; Albert in The Dinner Party; Felix in The Odd
Couple; Uncle Peck in How I Learned to Drive; Selsdon in Noises
Off; and the Butler in Anne Warbucks.
Nick Mandracchia (Chief Black et al) is thrilled to make his Tabard
debut! Credits include The Beard of Avon (Santa Cruz Shakespeare), The
Kid Thing (New Conservatory Theatre Center), The Liar (Western Stage),
Super Villain (The Pear Theatre, Silicon Valley Small Theatre Awards
Standout), Coney Island Christmas and Amadeus (City Lights). Favorite
roles include Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, Marc Antony in
Julius Caesar, and Porthos in The Three Musketeers. Upcoming: She
Loves Me (Foothill Music Theatre) and The Elephant Man (City Lights).
W. Scott Whisler (Judge Karesh et al) has enjoyed recent roles
including King Arthur in Spamalot, Joe Boyd in Damn Yankees, Elwood
P. Dowd in Harvey, and Sigmund Freud in Freud’s Last Session. In a
previous century he played Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, Koko in The
Mikado, and Austin in True West. Scott was a founding faculty member of
the Idyllwild Arts Academy, and designed scenery and lights in
London, Monte Carlo, and even Oklahoma City. He is currently the
Executive Director of Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.
Jocelyn Pickett (Miriam Hart et al) is thrilled to return to Tabard after
an appearance in the title role of Violet that earned her a Theatre Bay
Area award. Originally a Pacific Northwest native, she has performed
in many shows, including The Producers, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,
Rocky Horror Picture Show, Aida, and as Heather Chandler in the
Bay Area premiere of Heathers: The Musical at Ray of Light Theatre.
When not performing, Jocelyn spends her daytime as the Drama
Specialist at Bullis Charter School. She hopes you enjoy the show!
Tasi Alabastro (Assistant Director) is an actor, filmmaker, and content creator whose
hobbies include photography and bookstore diving. He has had the honor of being
published in Tayo Magazine and featured in various galleries in San Francisco.
Mr. Alabastro is a proud member of Red Ladder Theatre Company where he delights
in sharing the art of theatre with children who would otherwise not have the
opportunity to experience it. He writes about his experiences in film and stage on

Meet the Artists
Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) is a theatre and television veteran and
entrepreneur who founded Tabard in 2001 to make a difference in the community
through the arts. For Tabard, she has created and/or written and directed a handful of
productions, including the most recent Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey. In
her non-theatre time, Cathy will soon complete training to be a certified yoga instructor.
Melissa Sanchez (Costume Designer) received her B.A. in technical theater with an
emphasis on costume design from San Francisco State University. Productions there
included Chess, A Streetcar Named Desire, Barber of Seville, Spring Awakening, and
Tartuffe. Other work includes References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot, Wallflower,
and La Llorona. She recently costumed West Side Story and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for
City Lights. She joins Tabard this season as resident assistant costumer; she costumed
Miracle on 34th Street and assisted with costumes for Death Takes a Holiday.
Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) continues to lead Tabard’s technical team, which he
has done since the company was founded in 2001. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering
and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, Joe’s steady and skilled leadership has led to
Tabard’s increased ability to explore and expand what we do technically.
John DiLoreto (Sound Designer) is Tabard’s chief audio engineer and has designed
sound for many Tabard shows as well as for TheatreWorks, City Lights, South Bay Musical
Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, and various clubs and
bands for over 30 years. He is also a former record producer, recording studio owner,
and keyboardist in numerous rock bands and in theatre orchestras. While at M.I.T. he
studied acoustics with Professor Bose, and he holds a M.Eng. from U.C. Berkeley and an
M.B.A. from Stanford. By day, he is Tabard’s operations director.
Tom McEnery (Playwright) has a deep interest in history, this Valley’s growth and the
evolution of cities. He received a masters degree in history from Santa Clara University
and has taught at Santa Clara and Stanford. His opinion pieces appear in newspapers
from the Irish Times to the San Jose Mercury, while his play based on Bill Clinton’s visit
to the West of Ireland is in development. Swift Justice is a project that he began with his
nephew, John McEnery, as a screenplay and evolved into the Tabard 10 in 10 production
last year and now this play. It is based on his friend Harry Farrell’s award-winning book.
Nick Nichols (Lighting Designer), Tabard’s executive director, is also the resident
lighting consultant for Tabard and Theatre on San Pedro Square, designing lighting for
many of Tabard’s productions since he joined Tabard in 2014. Before moving into arts
management, Nick spent 20 years working as a lighting designer and/or technical
director for Villanova Summer Shakespeare, Princess Cruise Lines, Ballet San Jose, and
American Musical Theatre of San Jose. Nick holds an M.F.A. in technical direction/lighting
design from Temple University and has taught lighting and technical theatre at Santa Clara
University, San Jose State, and U.C. Santa Cruz.
Karen Altree Piemme (Director) returns to Tabard after having directed Death Takes
a Holiday earlier this season, as well as last season’s production of The Immigrant and
one of the plays in 10 in 10: Perspective. An accomplished director, actor, dramaturg,
workshop facilitator, and acting instructor, Ms. Piemme specializes in social justice
theatre and community access to the arts. She is the director of the Red Ladder Theatre
Company, and has directed productions, taught classes, and conducted workshops
locally, nationally, and internationally for 30 years. In 2011 she received the Champion of
Arts Education Award from the City of San Jose, and in 2012 she was named one of the
“35 Faces” of Theatre Bay Area. Her next project, Bridges, is a world-premiere musical
for Berkeley Playhouse which examines the impact of the civil rights movement across
generations in one particular Bay Area family.
Joyce Taylor (Stage Manager) stage-managed Tabard’s recent Miracle on 34th Street
and appeared in both Homeward Bound and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, where
she was also assistant to the director. Joyce has been part of Cathedral of Faith’s World of
Arts ministry for 20 years, where she has performed in a variety of roles from narrator to
demon. For the last 10 years, she has been the Drama Ministry Director where she
directs and manages Christmas and Easter productions, dramas, and scripture readings.
Jenafer Jiles Thompson (Assistant Stage Manager) has had a passion for the
performing arts since her early childhood years. She has directed children’s theatre in
Vallejo since 2013. She holds a B.A. in theatre performance from San Jose State
University and has portrayed the roles of the Stepmother in Into the Woods, Simonne
Evrard in Marat/Sade and 1/3 of the Chuca Trio in Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez. She is now
an aspiring grad student for her M.F.A. in acting.
