President’s Message Becoming… When I retired from BCSC and IUPUC, I decided to take the Leadership Bartholomew County and Coalition for Collaborative Learning classes to better understand Bartholomew County systems and how one can get involved in shaping what our community will become. I learned a lot about agriculture, educational, political, government and legal systems. Volunteering for notfor-profit organizations such as Lincoln Central Neighborhood, Love Chapel, Food Insecurity, Sans Souci, BCSF Board of Directors and other endeavors was both interesting and rewarding. After enjoying seven years of being the LBC Board President, I grew in my understanding of the county’s public/private partnerships. Throughout these years, I became more widely versed in how local systems cooperate with each other. However, I would always gravitate back toward educational endeavors. Perhaps it is the comfort level of 40 years of teaching. I truly believe, though, it is my passion. Through action all of these experiences have shaped who I am today. Examples of becoming as a DKG contributor are all around us. Our new initiates and transfer member are learning about our organization and its members. Committee members began their work during the August meeting. Officers are asking each and every member to contribute, as they are able. Marjorie Hooten paved the way for many teachers to grow in their desire to teach children and youth. Here is the question – How are you becoming an involved DKG member? Encouraging teachers in your circle of friendship to join might be one way. Volunteering for a chapter opportunity to work side by side with another DKG member might be another. Gathering clippings from our local newspaper, working on a project, attending November’s meeting and/or spreading the word about DKG are worthy endeavors. We all joined DKG because we are dedicated educators. Join your sisters in spreading our commitment of education for all. Become involved and passionate as a DKG contributor. Lynette Farless, Co-President, DKG Tau Chapter 1 Tau Chapter of DKG Minutes September 20, 2016 Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation Administration Building Minutes of Tau Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma September 20, 2016 Lynette Farless, co-president, opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and then thanked the members of the hostess committees for the refreshments. Karen Garrity moved and Nancy Battleson seconded that the minutes of the last meeting, as printed in Tau Talk, be accepted. The treasurer’s report was distributed. Joan Houston reminded the members that dues are due before the next meeting. Mary Ann Robbins moved and Julie Anthers seconded that the report be accepted. Cheryl Zuckschwerdt-Ellsbury read a note from Betty Welch thanking us for the contribution to First United Methodist Church in memory of Jim Welch, and for the flowers that were delivered to her. Georgianna Morrison moved and Natalie Lavengood seconded that Peggy Wampler be accepted as an honorary member of the chapter. Joan Houston moved and Dee Black seconded that E. Jean Ellis have her membership status changed to Reserve. Joan Houston moved and Mary Ann Robbins seconded that the chapter pay her dues this year. Committee reports from the last meeting will be included in the next Tau Talk, which will be a special issue for just that purpose. Sue Linder reminded members of the deadlines for submitting information to be included in the next two Tau Talk issues. Lynette Farless reviewed the discussion of payment of initiates’ fees that occurred last meeting. Cynthia Miller then moved that the motions made at that meeting be removed. This motion was accepted. (In the future, if we want to pay initiates’ fees, we will “pass the hat” at a meeting prior to initiation in order to reimburse the initiates for their fees.) New business: a slide show of the sewing project for The Granny Connection was given, and dresses made were displayed. The next opportunity to help will be Nov. 11, at East High School Consumer Sciences department, from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm. Supplies to be donated are: plain tshirts up to size 14-16, gallon zip-lock bags, wide bias tape, thread, trim such as rick-rack, elastic, and cotton material 1 yard or more. The chapter needs a 3-fold poster made to display our Granny Connection project. Brenda Main and Thelma Frame volunteered to make this. Thelma Frame was originally a member of Tau Chapter, then of chapters in Richmond and South Bend. A ceremony of re-commitment for her was conducted by Judy Richardson. 2 Our guest speaker was Dr. Tammy Stone Iorio, from the Bartholomew Historical Society. She spoke of the society’s past problems and the solutions occurring presently. She then gave a presentation of historical maps of Indiana and especially the Bartholomew County areas. Lynette Farless read a letter from Dr. Laura Hack: “On behalf of the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation, I would like to thank you for your support of our annual teacher’s professional development conference this summer. With your support, over 100 teachers and administrators were able to learn from a Marzano Research specialist and strengthen their knowledge and skills around the concepts of Growth Mindset, Growth Model Report Cards, and assessment of state standards. In addition, members of the Tau Chapter were on hand to help with registration, lunch service, and creation of beautiful centerpieces, which became gifts for our new teachers. This two day conference is an important event which brings educators together and allows them to explore best practices with peers, showcases our highly effective teachers with our “teachers teaching teachers” approach, and is a bonding time for faculty and administrators.” The meeting was then adjourned. REMINDER FROM OUR LEGISLATION COMMITTEE To find out who is on the ballot, go to this website: http://www.bartholomew.in.gov/clerk.html#election-information • Choose “review candidates on my ballot”. • Enter your county, name, and birthdate and you will see the candidates. Early voting has begun at the County Courthouse. • Hours are 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday. • Saturday voting is on: Oct. 29 and Nov 5 between 8 AM and 3 PM. Other early voting locations starting Oct. 31 through November 4 between 11 AM and 7 PM; Saturday, Nov. 5 between 8 AM and 3 PM are: • Donner Center (back entrance) • Main Source Bank – West Side Location – S.R. 46 • Flintwood Wesleyan Church On Tuesday, November 8, Election Day, there will be 18 Vote Centers open between 6 AM and 6 PM. Remember, you may vote at any of the 18 Centers. Go to this website for the vote center map: http://www.bartholomew.in.gov/clerk.html#vote-centers From our Program Committee: Come to the November meeting to learn about the programs that are making a difference with the literacy issues in Bartholomew County. Bring a teacher/educator friend. Did you know that the Bartholomew County Literacy Task Force was formed 12 years ago? There are representatives from 26 community organizations and schools in the group. The Mission for the Literacy Task Force (LTF) is for all Bartholomew County residents to be literate. The LTF Goals are: • All Bartholomew County children will come to school ready to learn to read. • All Bartholomew County children will be reading on grade level by third grade. • All Bartholomew County parents will be equipped to support their child’s education. • All Bartholomew County adults will be literate. • All adults will be supportive of the Bartholomew County literacy initiatives. Programs established by the LTF: • Book Buddies – a tutoring program for struggling readers in second or third grade. (Several Tau members are Book Buddies!) 4 Book Express – a RV filled with books, manipulatives, and hands on activities travels to high-risk neighborhoods providing activities/books for young children. • Tots Reading Lots – books with suggested activities are mailed three times a year to children ages 1 to 4 free to all who indicate a need. • Support for the launching of Early Childhood Education – Busy Bees and Bright Beginnings • Support McDowell Literacy Initiatives • Community-wide focus on literacy thru the following: o Read Across America o Literacy Festival o Put Your Nose in a Book Day o Community Book Read Please bring a gently used children’s book, age appropriate for up to 8th grade to our meeting for this group. • From our Projects Committee: (Look for this committee’s report later in this Tau Talk.) Our goal is to have two fundraisers this year with a total gain of $500 for our treasury. Each fundraiser has a goal of $250. This goal is $200 higher than last year to allow us to have funding for projects that occur throughout the year in our community. **** November 3 Meeting: The first activity is to create small baskets for a silent auction. Two friends could also join to create a larger basket. The baskets should have a theme. Examples include: Family Games, Scrapbooking, Man Teens, Night Out, Baby Basket, Spa Items, Family Game Night, Bake a Cake, Pasta Night, Movie Night, Yard Work or your own clever creation. These baskets can be valued from $10-30. You may include gift cards and set the starting price based on the value of the basket. Bring your cash or check and purchase some unique gifts for the holidays. Be sure your basket/container allows the buyer to see the items clearly. We will have a form with a brief description of the basket items. ***** Here is a list of possible basket ideas in case any ladies need suggestions. Committee: Projects Chairperson: Janice Montgomery Committee Members Present: Dee Black, Carol Crossman, Kandice Castillo, Nora Mitchell, Shirley Riehn, and Janice Montgomery Questionnaire: 1) What are the strengths of your committee and how do they benefit Tau Chapter and/or you as a member? Committed, Creative, Enthusiastic, Goal-oriented members 2) What are your committee goals to move your committee forward to further benefit Tau Chapter and/ or you as a member? How might the committee make these goals become reality? Make the activities interesting and break into two activities. • Raise $500 this year ($200 more than last year) Ø November-every member may bring an individual basket for auction or work with a partner or team to create a basket for Silent Auction Basket Types might be: (Card making or Scrapbooking Man Cave, Teen, Baby, Spa Items, Family Game, Bake a Cake, Pasta Night, Movie Night, Yard Work) Ø April-Easter Egg-money in the eggs (same as last year) Ø Planned Giving Seminar-in memory of our great Marjorie Hooten, we will host a Planned Giving Seminar and invite BARTA at a separate time from our meetings about ways people can remember DKG, school foundation, churches, favorite charities in our plans. 3) Opportunities and Concerns – Are there opportunities that your committee would pursue if you had the resources? Please elaborate as to what your committee needs to make use of these opportunities. Consider more ways to spend money on community projects that we earn and create a desire to seek these projects. 4) Does your committee have any concerns they would like addressed? How do we encourage opportunities for giving? Committee: Calling Committee Members present: Cynthia Miller, Ellen Pardieck, Nancy Battleson, and June Hagan The Calling Committee collects information early and tries to make calls about a week ahead of each meeting in an efficient manner. Every member should be notified by email or telephone. We are concerned about members who can no longer drive to meetings so we continue to stay in touch prior to each meeting and by sending “care” cards. We have also been concerned about the ability of some members to continue to pay dues. Tau Chapter may vote to pay a member’s dues when a need has arisen. Committee: Marjorie Hooten Committee Report 2016-2017 Participants: Julie Anthers, Henrietta Snively, Mary Ann Robbins, and Sarah Taylor Strengths: Funds are doing well. Raised the amount awarded to Tau Members to $300.00 and non-members to $200.00. Weakness: We forgot to note the number of attendees at the summer workshop we sponsored. Response: This summer BCSC held our annual Summer Learning Conference for teachers in BCSC and other districts. We had 150 teachers registered for the conference, which was held over two days. In addition, 21 administrators both attended and presented at the workshops. Opportunities: 6 1) Revise the Marjorie Hooten Fund brochure. 2) Sent to all BCSC teachers to promote the Marjorie Hooten Fund. Explain what the fund can do for local teachers. 3) Contact recipients awarded a Freshman Higher Education grant during their sophomore year to see if they are still in education. Send them caring cards of support for their efforts to become an educator. Contact them their junior year and advise them of the grant opportunity available to them during their period of student teaching. Concerns: Pray the stock market stays up! Rochelle is transferring her membership to the Omega Chapter in Annapolis, Maryland. While we will definitely miss Rochelle at Tau, Omega Chapter is gaining a great member into their chapter. Tau Sisters, if you know of a member who is sick, is grieving because of losing a loved one, needs to be cheered up, or for any special reason the member might need to know we are thinking of them, please let Donna Fleming know (812-343-1369 or d.r.fleming@comcast.net) and Donna will send a card. World Fellowship and Personal Growth/Professional Affairs Activity for Tau Chapter Your help is needed to work with Tau Chapter’s Golden Key Project with the Granny Connection Group: Sewing Dresses for Girls in Zambia – DKG’s Schools for Africa Project Columbus East High School – Family Consumer Science area Friday, November 11, 2016; 11:30 am to 3:00 pm (3:30pm) Make a Difference in the Lives of African Children Join us on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 11:30 am in the Consumer Science room at Columbus East High School for instruction in sewing tee shirt dresses. JayDee (Judy) Edgell of the Granny Connection, will be there to help us with making the T-shirt dresses and simple shorts. Items needed include: wide pastel colors of double fold bias tape, trimming (zigzag, ribbon, etc.), plain children’s t-shirts in lighter colors (especially sizes 12-14), thread, pillow cases, as well as cotton fabric of one yard or more with matching thread. Remember, you do not need to know how to sew. If you can iron, cut out a pattern, measure lengths of bias tape, ribbon, elastic, or gather thread for ruffles or thread bias tape, you are needed. Family Consumer Science is located on the second floor at East. Parking is available on the Marr Road side near the office. Handicap parking is in front by the office along with a ramp to go up. Please sign in at the office when you arrive. Enter East at the main entrance, not the doors marked with “E, A, S, or T”.
