Showcase exhibition where ProductionSuite,
a complete workflow solution for automated,
standardized and color consistent wide-format
production, was showcased and created a
great deal of excitement for the large format
sector. GMG OpenColor, a revolutionary spot
color tool for labels and packaging greatly
extends color control and repeatability, was
also on display with demos and generated
a lot of interest. Also shown were GMG
ColorServer, GMG ColorProof, GMG
FlexoProof, GMG InkOptimizer that provide
one, integrated color solution for companies
offering hybrid printing including offset, flexo,
screen printing, and small and large format
digital printing.
GMG also paired up with partner HP to drive
various machines with GMG ProductionSuite
including the (2) FB 700’s & LX 850 in
the Scitex division and also used GMG
FlexoProof, GMG OpenColor, and GMG
ProductionSuite in the Designjet area.

In recent years, the jobs produced have shown
a trend towards more complex designs, where
the image data increasingly includes spot colors,
or where technical elements are occasionally
composed of overprinting spot colors.
This new trend poses a major challenge for
proofing. The following approaches are currently
available for handling spot colors in proofing:
Measuring of step wedges in the CIE L*a*b*
color space
This is a time-proven technology for coloraccurate simulation on the proof of the printing
of the solid tone or screen tints of individual
spot colors. However, the method reveals
weaknesses when simulating the overprinting of
combinations of spot colors, or of spot colors and
CMYK process colors.
Where the packaging is flexible
but the color is not
Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging Germany is a member of the Finnish
Huhtamaki Group, whose roughly 13,000 employees produce
packaging materials at 62 locations in 31 countries.
The company’s locations in Germany and Italy print and finish a
wide variety of films and papers, exclusively by gravure printing.
The Ronsberg location of Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging Germany
offers its customers a full service, from repro to cylinder engraving,
proofing, and printing. Printing data are processed using ArtPro,
with the Esko Automation Engine ensuring an efficient workflow
in the background. Huhtamaki in Ronsberg has been working with
high-end inkjet printers since the technology came to market, and
is a long-time user of GMG ColorProof.
Measuring of Multicolor test charts
This method involves the measuring of certain
combinations of spot colors or of CMYK plus spot
colors. However, the disadvantage is that profile
creation takes quite a lot of time and effort, and
that the profile is only valid for one particular
combination of spot colors and/or CMYK colors.
Depending on the software used, the number of
color channels is limited, and they are restricted
to reproducing measured color combinations,
meaning that they are highly inflexible.
Spectral modeling of printing processes
Every combination of spot colors and/or CMYK
colors has to be measured when measuring
a Multicolor test chart, this easily resulting
in thousands of patches. Both the quality of
the color profiles generated by the individual
methods, and also the time and effort required
for profile creation, are highly dependent on the
quality of the spectral modeling of a printing
process.
The results obtained with GMG
OpenColor meet the high expectations
formulated for the test.
GMG OpenColor at Huhtamaki Flexible
Packaging Germany
Basically, two different solutions for spectral
print modeling are available in the workflow:
the Esko Automation Engine and GMG
ColorProof. The profiling of printing and
proofing processes has been done very
successfully with GMG for many years under
the care of Repro Manager Michael Jehl. In
addition to GMG profiling tools, Michael
Jehl intensively examines the Multicolor
profiling solutions of other manufacturers,
discussing his experience in-house with
color scientists and developers from GMG.
As a result, Huhtamaki in Ronsberg was
already able to voice its detailed practical
requirements during the development phase
of GMG OpenColor, and also participated in
the beta test of the software.
The technology behind GMG OpenColor
GMG OpenColor is based on internal basic
models for wet-on-wet sheet-fed offset
printing, wet-on-dry UV offset printing, flexo
printing and gravure printing. These models
can be refined by using different numbers
of patches. The basic measurement always
consists of a spectral measurement of both
the printing medium and the solid tones
of the spot colors. The combination of the
selected basic model and the measurements
for the solid tones, together with the printing
medium, already makes it possible to far
better simulate the overprinting properties
of the spot colors on each other than was
possible with previous proofing solutions,
such as GMG ColorProof.
The more patches that are available, the
more accurately the GMG OpenColor model
is adapted to the real printing process.
The next step to improve results would
be to supplement the data with spectral
measurement of step wedges of the spot
colors, followed by addition of overprinting
solid tones and complete Multicolor test
charts for the highest quality results.
So, Huhtamaki has the following options at
its disposal for profiling:

proofing press for gravure printing

a laboratory proofing press
Following a number of tests, Huhtamaki
decided on the following procedure:
CMYK profiling was performed on the
production press, and is supplemented by
additional spot color wedges on the proofing
press. Color measuring equipment from
X-Rite is used for both tasks.
According to Repro Manager Michael Jehl,
the results obtained with GMG OpenColor
meet the high expectations formulated
for the test. In particular, there has been a
major improvement in the simulation of the
overprinting of spot colors, in combination
with each other or with CMYK process
colors. Profile creation requires far less time
and effort, saving time and money.
GMG OpenColor is currently being used
successfully on a wide variety of materials
printed on one side. Excellent results have
been obtained on white OPP, in particular.
The profiling of further media, such as
metalized films with pre-printed white, is in
preparation.

headquartered in York, has
invested in the GMG FlexoProof proofing
solution. Founded in 1974 with 65 employees
across four locations, YRG has deployed
FlexoProof as a digital front-end that drives
their Epson Stylus Pro 4900 17-inch and Epson
Stylus Pro 9900 44-inch printers, along with
a newly-installed 24-inch Epson Stylus Pro
WT7900 printer, a wide gamut nine-color
device that includes the ability to proof using
white ink.
The company services printers, retailers
and well-known FMCG brands by offering a
complete print services solution – artwork,
repro and flexographic platemaking. “Accurate
and consistent proofing has become the
more crucial aspect of our services,” says
Commercial Director Steve Buxton. “Printers
and end-users expect proofs to be precisely
representative of what, ultimately, ends up on
the shelf – regardless of the printing process
involved. We need to proof on a wide variety
of different substrates from increasingly
complex jobs that often include spot colors,
white inks, and metalics.”
“We have made sizeable investment in both
resources and technology to ensure our
proofs are what we term “Press Predictable”
– proofs that accurately reflect the production
output. Today, clients expect proofs to give
an accurate representation of how a job will
appear when printed – regardless of the color
space, substrate or inks that are used.”
Having used a variety of proofing systems
in the past, YRG searched for a solution that
would both strengthen their current proofing
capabilities as well as address the evolving
requirements of their customers. “We wanted
to be able to send a job through and have
the confidence of achieving “right-first-time”
results regardless of the complexity of the job.
We were well aware of GMG’s reputation as
an industry standard and decided to invest in
FlexoProof as the best solution out there to
handle the majority of our work,” continues
Steve. “We looked at our current offering and
felt that FlexoProof would enhance what we
were doing.”
GMG FlexoProof is a color proofing and
calibration application designed for the
specific requirements of the packaging and
label printing industry. Featuring halftone
digital proofing of flexographic and packaging
print jobs, FlexoProof ensures accurate and
consistent proofing output regardless of print
device, color space or substrate. FlexoProof
includes the GMG SpotColor Editor for precise
and repeatable color matching of spot colors.

in Alford, in the county of Lincolnshire, England.
has recently invested in GMG OpenColor proofing
software to increase proofing accuracy for its
corrugated, preprint and flexible packaging work.
Established in 1978, V&W’s 52 employees work
with printers around the country who produce
packaging for various blue-chip brands and retailers.
“Over recent years increasing job complexity and a
greater use of spot color inks has placed increased
importance on the production of accurate and
consistent proofs,” says Gareth Heward, Graphics
and Production Director. “The issue that we found
with most proofing software was that they were
based on a CMYK proofing model. Since more
and more of our packaging work falls outside of a
four-color process gamut, we needed a solution that
could both calibrate and reproduce the increasingly
diverse range of work that our customers produce.
“Spot colors have very different color characteristics
to process inks, and the result can be affected by the
sequence that the inks are laid down when printed,”
continues Heward. “Being able to profile more than
process colors was becoming more and more of a
requirement.

“We showed the job to GMG who ran it
through OpenColor and shipped the proof
back to us the next day. Considering the
time that we normally take on profiling
and calibration, the fact that GMG could
turn around a proof so quickly, that was so
close to the final result was astounding.”
GMG OpenColor is the industry’s first
application to offer precise and predictable
spot color simulation by analysing ink
behaviour in relation to the substrate’s
colorimetric properties. The result is a
profiling and calibration application that
delivers accurate spot color overprint
simulation as well as the interplay
between spot colors and process inks.
V&W’s solution was GMG OpenColor
driving a 44 inch (111cms) Epson
Stylus Pro 9900 complete with inline
spectrophotometer for automated color
measurement and calibration. “Installation
was fast and pain free. GMG came in and
set everything up, and gave us two days of
comprehensive training. What we’ve seen
from OpenColor since its installation has
been very impressive. OpenColor delivers
fast and extremely accurate proofing data
from even the most complex jobs. We’re
much more confident in the proofs that
we’re sending out now.

PHOTOGRAPHY
ColorMaster is a virtual color space used as a
preview profile for Photoshop or softproofing
applications. By viewing an image in the
ColorMaster color space the content originator,
typically a photographer, can detect problems
in the light or tonal range early on, and make
adjustments – for example, changing the light
setting or applying color corrections – before
storing the image file into the database. Once the
image has been retouched within the ColorMaster
color space, the ‘master’ RGB file can be output
many times to any industry standard with
confidence of its color accuracy.

ColorMaster is process-neutral and therefore
an extremely flexible form of data storage. The
workflow concept relies on the interlinking
of GMG ColorServer for color conversions,
GMG ColorProof for the output of hard proofs,
and GMG ProofControl for proof verification
according to print standards. GMG ColorMaster
supplies predefined settings and optimized
profiles, making it very easy for the user to set
up an automated workflow to convert images
and pages from the ColorMaster standard to
any international output standard. It offers a
high degree of automation, where prepress
departments can experience up to 50% time
savings.
REPRO
Many repro houses and brand owners are still
bound to CMYK workflows. There are a number
of disadvantages. CMYK databases do not allow
for sufficient repurposing of images, nor is
multi-channel use of images (for web and print)
possible. Committing early to CMYK does not
provide a quick way of rebuilding an image if
the printing standard or substrate changes. On
press, images built from CMYK databases can
produce unbalanced ink trapping throughout the
press sheet, while early-applied GCR negatively
influences grey balance and ink control on press.
ColorMaster offers the traditional benefits of
an RGB file format workflow – consistency
of separations for press, more consistent grey
balance, and total ink coverage and GCR that
does not create color-correction issues. However,
unlike other RGB workflows, GMG ColorMaster
offers viewing done on a virtual CMYK color
space, which guarantees WYSIWYG for print.
The file is either previewed on a monitor with
help of the ColorMaster.icc profile, or a GMG
ColorMaster hard proof is output by simply
dropping the file into a GMG hotfolder.

GMG ColorServer makes it possible to put the
advantages of process-neutral data storage to
practical use. It automatically converts pages
or images from the earlier approved RGB file to
any industry standard. Expensive, manual work
steps are eliminated as a result of automatic color
separations and the ability to simultaneously
resize RGB images during processing, while
sharpening them as a function of the image size.

Once an image or page file has been edited,
approved, and stored, with the help of
ColorMaster, in the RGB color space, it is
available to be quickly converted to any popular

FESPA
Brasil took
place in Sao Paulo on
March 13-16 this year – an expo
dedicated to the wide format and textile
printing sectors. Co-located with ExpoPrint Digital and
co-organized with APS Fairs & Events, this trade show brought
print solution providers a comprehensive display of wide format print
technologies, textile printing, garment decoration, screen printing, signage and digital
signage. GMG Americas was in the center of the action showcasing GMG ProductionSuite, the
complete production workflow for wide format printing, drawing a great deal of attention. Paulo Monteiro,
GMG’s Business Director of Latin America, said “The response to ProductionSuite was phenomenal. It is truly a
revolutionary product, that changes the way the WFP companies look into their production, since they can have full control
of the production process, and cut time consuming costs at same time” Also on display were GMG ColorServer and GMG SmartProfiler,
