From the

Well, here
we are more
than half way
through 2012
already, and
more than half
way through
the show season. If you
are having the
heat we have
been having, that is most likely keeping you out of the
shows during the day. I mean it has been HOT! Our record so far this year, here in Arkansas, is 106. I suspect
it will get hotter yet since the summer isn’t over yet. Last
year we hit 111 one day. I’m starting to think I’m living in
Arizona instead of Arkansas. A lot of folks think we live in
Arizona already mistaking AR in our postal address for
Arizona. Unless you have an air conditioned garage this
heat makes it murder to work on your car too. I spend 15
minutes out in the garage and I’m sweating so bad that I
could water our garden with what is dripping off of me!
I’m looking forward to Branson! I hope you are
too! It is going to be a very informal event this year as I got
a bit of feedback from the last National I did saying it was
“over done”. Well, I don’t know what the happy medium
is but hopefully I won’t get too much feedback this year
saying it was “under done”. We’re trying to do the best we
can to make as many as possible have a good time and
sometimes that is a project in itself. Most, if not all of you
have to drive long distances to get there, spend a lot on
gas and lodging as well as food along the way so this year
we thought we would try to save something so everyone
can have a few extra bucks to use for something besides
the show. My wife, Kathy, is looking into us all (those that
want to) going to see a Branson show Friday evening after we do our cruise over the dam. We’ll see what she
comes up with. And this time I WILL have a map so that
everyone who straggles will be able to catch up.
Unless we get some unseasonably cold weather,
the trees will, or should, still be green. It is usually October
at the earliest when we start seeing the fall colors around
here. From the input I’ve been getting so far, it looks like
we should have a good showing of members and I hope
lots of cars show up too. Ray Reagan is doing a bang-up
job of getting us lots of goodies to have as door prizes,
part of the auction, and other items. We are hoping on a
turn out of a few vendors if at all possible. Since Dearborn
Classics doesn’t have to go 4,000 miles round trip to get
here, I hope they can show up.
I would appreciate it a lot if a chapter would take
over the nationals for next year. This is a lot of work and
I know that is one of the reasons that most chapters that
have hosted one are really not looking forward to doing
another one. If we can’t get chapters to take the baton we
Galaxie

by Mark
may start allowing a member to do it. I had a request to
have one down in Mississippi this year by a member but
since we have it set up for chapters I denied their request.
They did a show for Fords instead. I hope someone went.
I just can’t drive long distances any more due to my knee
injury. That is why I don’t mind doing them in Branson, but
if no chapters step up I may start looking for alternatives.
I myself don’t want to be burdened with having to go to a
National that is any distance away. So if you want to see
me, I guess we are going to have to decide if we want to
do the nationals in my area of the country every year. I
know I can do it, but I really would appreciate it if a chapter would do it. Galaxies NW? North Star? Liberty? Ride
Thru Time? Let’s try to break it up a bit. Around the country, not the same place all the time. We’ve had it twice at
the Moonshine Festival and I know that they would do it
again in a heartbeat, but it would be nice if we could get
chapters that we haven’t been to, get one going.
This magazine is getting to the printers a bit later
than I was hoping. I am seriously short of articles and
other items to post in the magazine. I appreciate the input
I am getting for the magazine, but it would be fantastic
if some of the members who promise me articles would
actually come through with them. I hear about how “I’m
going to write about this or that” and that is the last I hear.
I know you guys are all busy to, but imagine having to put
a MAGAZINE together rather than one small one or a two
page article! A 40 page magazine at that. I was hoping to
be done with this by the 11th but now as I write, it is the
15th and I’m still not done. It would also be wonderful if
the chapter directors would take note of the dates posted
for chapter news and make an effort to get it to me by
then. OK, I’m done with the negative paragraph for this
issue.
I have been getting some pictures sent in, but
some are a MAJOR problem. I cannot scan a 3x5 and get
the resolution I need for the magazine and since I have
to go somewhere to scan them, that is also a problem.
I NEED digital pictures. High resolution. Then I can use
them. If they are 8x10’s, yes, I can have them scanned
and they will work. The other problem with scanning is
picking up every dust particle and microscopic scratch
that is on the pictures. To get rid of them I have to use
a special filter that makes the whole picture loose quality. So if you can, send them via E-mail or by link in 300
DPI resolution or better. I had some come just before this
magazine was done that I decided to use, and I’m not
saying who’s they are because I want you folks to all send
in pictures of your car and I also would like some with you
and the car. There are a couple in this issue that fit the
profile. (Thanks Nancy! Thanks David and Jacky!)

Honk Your Horn
Hi Mark,
Finally, I’m paying my dues on time! This
year has slowed down for a change. I have enclosed pictures of a 1964 Galaxie that was taken
going through a giant redwood in Norther California.
The next set of pictures show that Galaxies never die, they just grow new roots. That was
taken down around Lamar, Missouri.
I enclosed some photos of my ongoing project. It started about 10 years ago. These photos
were taken May of 2011, the last one, 5 of 5 was
just taken.
The Gal is a 390, 4 speed XL. The original
block was stolen years ago. The owners were so
distraught that they just let the car sit for about
20 years, believe it or not. But I found the original
build sheet still stapled to the inside door panel on
the driver’s side.
I’m building it as a P Code clone. I already
have the P code speedometer, 3” front brakes,
3/8” fuel lines. The block was built by Doug Anderson here in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He owns
a 1964 T-bolt. He has built the block to as close
to the 1964 P-Code specs as can be allowed with
our garbage gas we must use today.
I also have the cast iron shorty headers and
an original H-pipe to go with the headers. I’m hoping to have the engine installed by October and on
the road by August of next year.
The photos are yours to use or throw away.
I thought the members might like to see some
unusual pictures of some Galaxies and possibly
some home grown restoration. If you like I can
send pictures of restoration progress for our members out there.
Keep up the good work, Mark.
pictures of the ongoing restoration, but they would
have to be high resolution digital pictures that can either be Emailed to me or sent on a disc. 300 DPI is
what the printer typically wants for the print job. If you
have to send pictures that are not digital, we need 8x10
that can be scanned. If you want or need them back,
you can send a self addressed stamped envelope with
them and we will send them back. Too bad I didn’t
know you wanted to do a P-code. I have one sitting out
back that I have been wanting to do but too many other
projects are in the way. It is a very rare automatic and I
have everything for it except bumpers! And I am sure I
can get a pair for it. —Mark)
WOW! I thought LAST issue was sparse when it
came to letters to the editor! This is a record breaking two months with ONE that I can use being sent
in! When you renew, send along a paragraph or
two letting us know what is going on. We want to
hear from you and I am sure that most of the other
members that like to read this column would like to
read it too. Remember folks, this is a club. A club
needs member participation. Otherwise it is simply
a magazine that we send out every two months.
The reason I like to see more pictures of cars with
members with them is so we can realize we are a
FAMILY of Galaxie owners that have a common
interest. Please send in some letters. There are
three pages of this magazine dedicated to the use.
We want to hear from you. —Mark

the pictures are very low resolution and cannot be

Freedom Is Not Free
What fight should we be fighting? Why should
we be fighting? A while back I got a chance to read an
article on starting a car club and the many benefits of
belonging to a club. I also received a letter from a man in
Washington State telling me his county had informed him
that it was going to fine him for his collection of antique
cars and steam tractors even though his property was
zoned for light industry and he had a business on it. The
county planned to eventually take his collection and place
a lien on the property to cover its costs—a VERY typical
approach to car collecting by the “Antique Car Haters of
America.”
These two approaches to car collecting made me
take note. In the article about car clubs, legal issues were
mentioned and yet not one thing was said about car clubs
supporting legal actions. I told this man to contact every
local car club he could and start an onslaught against the
county, jamming council meetings and telling local newspapers and television stations to lean on the “authorities”
who were pushing this needless end to his hobby.
Another one I heard of is about an Oregon lady
whose husband died leaving here a couple of nice cars
and truck that is being harassed by her city. She has received “official” notices to remove the vehicles. She has
received threatening midnight phone calls. She has found
each and every car damaged so as to be inoperable when
the “authorities” arrive. Fortunately, she got help from a
few old friends who are storing the vehicles for her.
While hospitalized, one Texan had his property entered by bureaucratic zealots (may I use the term
THIEVES?) who cut down a fence hiding the cars. Then
they cut down his trees, served notice that his cars were
visible and then towed them all away.
Can clubs help? Well, we try by supporting SEMA.
But if you are a member of a chapter, you can have direct
influence in a local zoning battle over the “other guys”
cars. Personally, I couldn’t care less if they were a collection of AMC Pacers!
If “they” can take away his Pacers, you can bet
your bottom dollar “they” can take away your Galaxie collection. Or at least the portion of your collection you are
using to restore the other portion. You know, the “parts
cars” which are unsightly junk heaps. If you are a chapter
member, consider starting a zoning committee that can
work with local “authorities” when they start acting crazy
about old cars.
Here is a list of organizations that you can also
support that fight for our right to keep our property. By
the way, when will “officials” start realizing that stealing is

stealing and that it doesn’t matter what the “reason” for it

Some Tech Tips
I had a new problem. Seemed like whenever I would
hit a hard bump somewhere in the road the brake
lights and dash lights would go out. Sure enough
the fuse was blown time and again. What could be
wrong? Finally I gave in and bought an NOS switch
from Mark Miller. And that was the end of THAT problem. O’Reilly gave me a refund and I wasn’t blowing
fuses all the time.
And now with the relay box, there has been
no problems at all using the Halogens. I even upgraded them to some H-4 Types.
Ever wish you could just move your car over in
the corner while working on it but there just seems to
be no way without a big hassle? Well try the Car Dolly. A set of 4 “Roll Master” all steel constructed plates
under each wheel. These are GREAT! The complete
set runs about $180 bucks and you can get them
from NMW Products, 35 Orlando Drive, Raritan NJ
08869. Give them a call at 908-526-3800 and tell
them that the Ford Galaxie Club sent you.
For the folks that want to put headers on your 302
or 289 in a 65-68 body style, I have heard that 302
headers for a 90-95 F 150 Pickup will work.
Whatever you do, if you replace a drive shaft
yoke, DON’T put one in that has any rough spots on
it. It will make your seal leak, for sure.
Before cold weather sets in, give your Galaxie
heater a performance check if you drive it at all during
the winter. Remove any left over summer items from
the trunk, extra weight cuts into fuel economy and
performance. Don’t park over any piles of leaves in
the streets. Catalytic converters can get hot enough
to start them on fire!
We had changed the rear end axle seals recently
on our 1964 Galaxie. One reason I buy lifetime parts
from the parts store is so that if there is a problem
I can get a replacement for free. After three months
I noticed the seals were leaking on both sides. I figured I just had a bad pair. WRONG . . . don’t ever
install the axle seals without adding a little grease to
them. They need to be lubricated or else can you say
melted seal?
Need to paint some bolts? Use that old distributor
cap and you can paint nine at a time without missing
a lick. It will allow you to get all the angles and the
threads are protected and won’t get paint all over
them.
We recently I purchased a 1979 (Oh No!) Ranchero
for our 16 year old. It has the same engine a number
of us have in our Galaxies (just made this Galaxie
related) and was only getting 11 MPG! It seemed
to run pretty well, and have reasonable power, but
we figured we would go ahead and do a tune-up.
Sure enough the mileage increased to 13.5, which is
still sort of pitiful. But then I noticed it had Catalytic
converters on it and single exhaust. Now it has dual
exhausts. The moral to the story . . . BE SURE you
are tuned up and if you can afford to get rid of single
exhaust, do it! I still haven’t found out what the new
exhaust has done. But boy does it have pickup.
Just because it is new, doesn’t mean it is good!
About a year ago I replaced both the universals on
our 1972 Ranch Wagon. Anyhow, at about 70mph
I noticed a vibration that new tires, balanced tires,
new rims and rotating seemed to do nothing to help.
I had the front end checked and looked for a bad
idler arm or SOMETHING that would be a reason
for the vibration. Well guess what? The brand new
rear universal joint managed to have a cracked cap
under the u-bolt. I FINALLY figured out what it was
when it became darn obvious it was a driveline vibration. It had reached the point where if you let off the
gas at 70mph you wouldn’t feel the vibration. Anyhow that one is fixed.
Did you know that stainless steel bolts and fasteners aren’t as strong as steel ones? Yes, that is
true. If you are going to replace steel bolts be sure
that unless it is just holding on a fender or something
you get ARP stainless bolts which are designed with
170,000 psi of tensile strength. Great for exhaust,
intake, and all those engine applications. Even with
powdercoating, I still stick with steel on the suspension.
Here was another one! I had been having a problem with my headlight switch in our Galaxie. That
was before I realized the problem was being caused
by the halogen headlights and the relay box remedy. I went to O’Reilley’s and purchased a brand new
switch made by Borg Warner and lo and behold now

-Galaxies Northwest-
Have a great summer!
Summer’s finally here in the Pacific
Northwest following one of the wettest Junes in
recent years. The sun did make an appearance
on Saturday, June 16th, for a Galaxies Northwest cruise and tour. Members from Seattle/
Tacoma/Olympia area caravaned south to Centralia, Washington to meet with members who
travelled north from the Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, Washington area. After a great lunch
and good conversation the group drove about
five miles to the tiny town of Galvin to tour the
Busek Museum that was packed with a collection of the community’s early cars, trucks, motorcycles, other conveyances and lots of memorabilia. Across the street is a former service
station from pre-war days that looks like they
shut it decades ago and you’re walking in to it
just the way they left it. Everyone had a great
time checking out this collection.
Next up is a cruise to the beautiful Hood
River Valley on the slopes of Oregon’s Mt. Hood
followed by a great barbecue at members Jim &
Linda Gray’s home. Members will convoy east
from the Portland area through the scenic Columbia River Gorge to Hood River community.
The Gray’s have planned a fun and interesting
day touring the picturesque valley that produces
pears, apples, and other fruit and wine grapes.
First stop is “The Gorge White House” for wine
tasting, enjoying the beautiful gardens and art,
and more. From there it’s on to small community of Parkdale, Oregon to visit an ice cream
parlor, followed by a stop at the Country Store.
The final destination is Jim and Linda’s home
for an excellent barbecue.
August 25th will be the Galaxies Northwest Regional Show. It will be held at Camas,
Washington High School and is part of a senior student project car show. It should be nice
weather, lots of cars, good food, a live band,
and show-stopper Galaxies! If you’re in the
greater Portland area be sure to stop by.

The Atlanta Galaxie’s Chapter has a green
light from the moonshine people of Dawsonville,
Georgia. We will host a chapter event October
26th, 27th & 28th in conjunction with the 45th
annual running of the Dawsonville Moonshine
Festival, Dawsonville, Georgia. This festival is
always held the 4th weekend in October. We
have already been asked by members if we are
doing a chapter show as was discussed when
we did the 2011 nationals.
We are not set up for registration yet,
however as every one knows, the hotels are a
scramble, first come first serve. Questions will
be answered at atlantagalaxies@yahoo.com.
Keep an eye out for further information in your

Whew! What a roaster we are suffering through
here in the South!! The rest of the county hasn’t
fared any better. Makes it hard to get that old
Gal out and take her to a show, especially with
no A/C, but I’m glad some of you have sweated through it. Let’s not even bring up the vinyl
seats, okay? Suffice to say “just how did we do it
back in the day, huh”? I’ll be honest, we haven’t
done a lot of shows, despite the full schedule on
our website. Life keeps getting in the way. The
Beacon’s cruise in has been hitting like clockwork and is always fun. If you have never been
there, The Beacon Drive In needs to be in your
Gazette
bucket list. Sugar N Spice Drive In is a great
nostalgic place too and its only about 2 miles
from the Beacon. We also recently hit a show in
Union and was parked right beside David Pearson (showing a Ford I might add) and followed
that show up with a show and drag at Shadyside
drag strip in Shelby that was a hoot!! Got to race
a lead sled Ford from the 50s with my kids in
the back seat of the Galaxie hollering “go daddy”
for the whole 1/8th mile. Worth every penny! Of
course there are the regionals in Dawsonville,
GA in Oct and the Nationals in Branson in Sept.
Both should have lots of our chapter members
present, but in the meantime here in the Carolinas we have been re-invited to the fall Autofair
Sept 22-23!! Only 10 spots each day so they
will go quick! We also have the Skylyn UMC
show that I sponsor at my church on Sept 8th
and the Mason’s show on Nov 10th. There are

Members:
Please understand that to be a chapter
member you MUST maintain your national membership. We promote the chapters and events and
the chapter supports the national by making sure
that all members are members in good standing in
the national club.
To start a chapter you need 15 members
in any given location to be willing to get together
to form a chapter. Remember, we are a club with
chapters, not a bunch of little clubs. We suggest
having members show their current membership
cards at any event that the chapter hosts. If you
are a chapter member be sure to let us know so
we can get a card to you. If you plan on joining a

like to finish up by remembering NASCAR great
Cotton Owens. What a pioneer to the sport and
yet another reminder of why we need to seize
the opportunity to recognize and appreciate the

course we lost Carroll Shelby just a few short

Club Chapter
The two months up here in Minnesota
have been really busy for the car guys. The snow
melts and the tires go back on the pavement for
most everyone up here, and the buzz about up
and coming shows starts.
The Northstar Galaxie Club has been
busy as well. Several of the cars and their owners made the trek to St. Paul for Back to the Fifties this year again; this has become a yearly
event now and helps draw everyone back out
into the sunshine and this year we have had
plenty of that. With the Midwest’s biggest show,
Back to the Fifties neatly tucked away it is time
to start with some of the smaller weekly shows
now.
We will be hosting on two separate Friday
evenings in North St. Paul and by being the host
Galaxie
club we have a really nice area to park in and
to watch all the other cars from. The first of July
brought the club to a cute little malt shop called
the Dariette Drive-In, followed by a cruise down
to the Mound Park overlook ( which is our jumping off point for our annual Drive for Kids event in
October) a big thanks to all who braved the 100+
degrees that day; thanks to Paul M. for setting
it all up.
Later in July we will be having a club
cruise through the scenic Minnesota river valley
which will have a final destination at the Galaxy
Drive-in, this drive is setup and coordinated by
Dave L. who has also hosted a couple of other
cruises through that area as well. Thanks, Dave.
We are planning a cruise later this summer to
scenic Hastings, Mn. which is a old river boat
town built along the big old Mississippi river for
their Saturday evening car show.
Our club has a jam packed summer
planned so anyone up in the Minneapolis area
that is looking for something to do on a Friday or
Saturday evening please keep an eye open for a
bunch of Galaxies that are hanging out together.
And thanks to all that have or will be hosting our
summer barbecues as well. Thanks from Brian
and Deb and all of the club’s members. Have a
great summer.

know that it is a lot more fun to get together with

do realize that you also have web space available for free to. You just need to have a member

-2(Q) I have a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 4-Door Sedan
that had all the side mouldings taken off, repaired
and polished. The problem I am having now is that I
cannot get the silver paint to stick to the front fender mouldings and door mouldings on this car. Every time I put it on, the paint flakes right off. What
can I do to make the paint stay on the mouldings?
-1-
(A) The paint will not stick to the front fender and door
mouldings on your ‘64 because the surface has been
polished and is too smooth. There is nothing for the
paint to adhere to. The easiest thing to do is to tape
off the outsides of the moulding and leave the center of
the moulding open and clear. Then take some either
400 or 600 sandpaper and sand the inside area of the
moulding where the paint has to be applied. You want
to rough up the surface so there is something for the
paint to stick to. After you have gotten the center of the
mouldings roughed up, then use some type of cleaner,
such as, tar and wax remover or even Windex with
ammonia the spray type, to clean up the inside area
of the moulding where you will be applying the paint.
Then take the moulding off and spray the center of the
front fender and the door mouldings with the Argent
Silver paint that was used. You do have to make sure
that the temperature is at least 65 degrees when you
spray these because if it is colder than that the paint
will sometimes have a tendency not to adhere correctly
because the temperature is too low. Always spray the
paint with 2 to 4 light coats instead of 1 or 2 heavy
coats. The paint will stick better and you will have a
better base for the paint to adhere to.
(Q) I have a 1964 Galaxie 500 Convertible and I
would like to know what color the wheels should
be when the car has full wheel covers. I have been
told by some people it should be body color. Other
people tell me its black. What is the correct color
for the wheels when you have full wheel covers?
(A) If your 64 Galaxie has full wheel covers, the wheels
should be painted 70% gloss black. This is a gloss that
is between high gloss and semi-gloss. If your car had
the small dog dish or poverty caps, then the wheels
would be painted the color of the lower portion of the
car. If the lower portion of the car was red, the wheels
would be red. If it was blue, they would be blue. This
holds true for the entire full size Ford line both in ‘63
and ‘64. This is easily verified. All you have to do is
get yourself a copy of the Sales Brochure both in ‘63
or ‘64. If you look at any car that has full wheel covers,
you will see that the portion of the wheel that still shows
is black. It is not the body color of the car. I have
seen original, unrestored cars that had painted wheels
with full wheel covers, but there is an easy explanation
for this. When the car was originally ordered by the
dealer, it came with the small dog dish hub caps which
means the wheel would be painted whatever the lower
body color of the car was. When the dealer sold the
car, the customer who purchased it wanted full wheel
covers. The dealer took the small dog dish hub caps,
put them back in stock and took out four full wheel covers from the parts department and put them on the car.
They did not repaint the wheels black as they should
have been. So when you see painted wheels with full

Hi Mark,
Looks like we are going to have a very hot summer this year. Hope all is okay with all of you. I, David, really enjoy the new Galaxie
Gazette & appreciate all you do for the club.
We haven’t been to any car shows in June or July, too hot. The nice people at Eckler’s Dearborn Classics gave our 1966 Ford Galaxie
500, 7 Litre convertible a five week vacation in their air conditioned show room in Titusville, Florida.
I recently purchased a new radiator for my car from Dearborn Classics. They are using a new supplier, US Radiator in California. I
was impressed with correct fit and the original appearance, show quality.

New member, Larry Taubee, treated us with this nice picture of his 1961 Sedan. I hope he does a story for us.
1968 XL GT
Owned by Franklin & Arleen Fitzgerald, Greenbay, Wisconsin
Having practically grown up hanging around a
Ford agency as a small boy. (My Dad was a top
salesman for Van Drisse Ford in Green Bay, Wisconsin for some 40 to 50 years.) I grew up loving
that Ford flat head legacy and strong racing history.
My first Ford was a 1950 Ford maroon club
coupe, which I proceeded to french in the headlights and taillights and to close off the side filling
gas cap location and move the cap and gas filling
to the inside of the trunk. The flat head engine was
new and went with a Fenton 2 carb setup, Mallory
Ignition and Belond headers and Smitty mufflers.
The 1950 Ford made it into the January 1956 issue of Hot Rod magazine. From there I sold the
car (Big Mistake) and ordered out a 1956 Ford,
312 C.I. engine and a overdrive transmission. I
proceeded to mill the heads and to this date, was
the fastest car I ever owned. Out of many many
hundreds of drags I had with the car, it proceeded
to lose only twice. A very very fast car.
I kept the car about one year and then ordered out a 1957 Ford 2dr. hardtop with the ECode engine (2-4 barrel carbs 270 HP) and automatic trans. Proceeded to wait and wait for this
car, it took about 3 1/2 months to finally take delivery. Ford kept putting me off on the car and I believe was hoping I would order something else but
I stuck to that E-Code engine and one day there
it was. After a while I put on a McCullock Super
Charger on the 2-4's and proceeded to melt the
electrodes off of 5 to 6 spark plugs. It took a while
to get this straightened out, if the humidity was
high it would change the fuel air mixture and the
resulting disappearance of one or two of the spark
plug electrodes. It worked fine after that problem
was fixed and it ran decent. One day I decided
to put a Edelbrock manifold with 3-2 barrel carbs
on and it really ran very fine and quick after that.
I then ran the car till 1964 and sold it (another big
mistake). In the fall of 1964 I ordered out from Van
Drisse Ford in Green Bay, WI, a 1965 Ford Galaxie XL with a 390 CI. engine, bucket seats and
console, automatic transmission. It was a great
Galaxie
car, I really enjoyed it, but come Feb.2nd of 1968 I
ordered from Van Boxtel Ford in Green Bay, WI a
1968 Ford XL-GT with a 428 engine and automatic
transmission. This 68 XL-GT was built in the Ford
Chicago IL. Plant on Feb. 16, 1968 and was #693
out of 1855, 1968 Ford XL-GT 2dr. hardtops built
in the 1968 Ford year. I received the car at the end
of February.
A short time later, (one month) I pulled the
engine with a great Ford engine builder from Milwaukee, WI by the name of Robert Prouty. Bored
the engine +30over, Medium Riser heads which
had been worked on by Mr. Prouty and added
Forged pop up pistons, 12 to 1 compression ratio and a C8AX Ford cam, along with a Ford low
rise manifold with 2 Holley 4 Barrel 600 cfm carbs,
added a set of Ford Lightweight Exhaust Long
Branch Manifolds, (by the way, price back then
$27.40 wholesale apiece). After that the engine
was balanced, I never shifted below 6200 RPM,
the car ran very very strong for 5 years.
After about 5 years I bored the engine out
to +40 over and put on a set of Ford 427 Low Riser
Heads with Flat Top Pistons, Cobra Jet cam with
10.5 Compression. The engine has been kept that
way since 1973. The 1968 Ford XL-GT has since
been featured in the March 1983 issue of Super
Ford Magazine and the April 2005 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines (Great magazine by the
way). It was also on the cover of Auto Krafters
2002 Full Size Ford issue.
In July 1997 I started a body off restoration
at 120,000 miles. The Ford body was in great condition with only some slight surface rust under the
trunk molding. The main problem was the frame
rails, both left and right sides were rusted from the
inside of the frame rail and very thin. While taking
the LS gas line off, I put my finger through the rail,
I was lucky to find an old time Ford welder, who
fabricated both frame rails, duplicating the holes
which Ford put in and the horizontal welds as well.
What a great job he did.
I had heard about this body repair service
that attracted the Shelby Mustang owners and I
16

felt, if the Shelby people like the results I surely
would to. That is when Bellevue Body Shop and
the owner Tom Gerrits took over. He also had a
excellent body and paint worker by the name of
Clint Deering, who did great work and was taught
by the Master Tom Gerrits.
My wife and I started going to car and part
shows in the mid-west, east and the south, picking
up a lot of NOS parts. A major source of NOS parts
was Auto Krafters, PO Box 1100, in New Market,
Virginia 22844, and NOS parts was Mark Miller
Obsolete Ford Parts, 1329 Campus Dr., in Vestal, NY13850. And also Bruce Foley 1949-1979
Ford Parts, 2341 Dug Hill Road, in Brownsboro,
AL, 35741.
It was a pleasurable experience dealing with
these gentleman. One of the things I've learned is
before you go on a NOS parts hunt, first check in
the garage attic to see what you have—needless
to say I did not. I had been buying new parts since
the 70's and storing them in the garage attic.
When my wife Arleen and I started going in
1996, one of the first shows was in Indianapolis,
IN. This one vendor had a great collection of 1968
moldings, which to tell the truth were scarce at that
time and real hard to come up with now to say
the least. I really went off the deep end and purchased many moldings, one of which was a hood
molding. I paid $195.00 for it. When we returned
home, I went up in the garage attic and found two
NOS hood moldings in the original packaging with
a cost of $6.87 apiece wholesale.
I finished assembly of the car in October
1999 with help of my grandson Tyler Aldrich, (Now
a C.N. Railroad Engineer), his dad Tom Aldrich, a
Mustang owner for years, Warren Glime, one of
the top Ford mechanic's in Wisconsin and ended
up with a brand new 1968 Ford XL-GT. Since then
I have gone to a few car shows per year and was
lucky enough to come out of these shows with 105
trophies.
Its been 43 years with my 1968 Ford XL-GT
and 60 years running FORDS. If only I could turn
the clock back and start again. It has been a great
great run.

1963½ Galaxie 500
Owned by Wayne McKenzie - Southport, Florida
I bought this car a little over
a year ago from someone
who had it in storage several years. The interior was
already done when I bought
the car but nothing else was
up to par. I had the 390 rebuilt to stock specs including NOS exhaust manifolds
& the stock Ford carburetor.
It is painted silver and black
stock engine colors for ‘63.
The brakes were also rebuilt
with new wheel cylinders &
master cylinder. New shocks
were next. After mechanical
repairs were complete it was
time for paint. I liked the color
and did not want to change it.
The car had no rust at all but did have a few minor
dings, scratches, and very faded paint from an old
repaint. I have 17’ American Racing wheels with
NEX tires on the car now and love the look but
still have the original 14” wheels, covers & fender
skirts. I bought the ‘console’ at the Emerald Coast
Cruzin on Panama City Beach last fall. It is handy
and removes quick. That is a great car show and
I would love to see more Galaxie’s attend. Over
2700 cars last year where on the beach. (http://
www.emeraldcoastcruizin.com). Over the years I
have owned a ‘59 convertible, a ‘60, ‘62 & now
this ‘63 hardtop. This car is nice and it is a driver.
It’s not a perfect show car, but it’s a great cruiser.
I have not installed AC yet because I like to cruise
with the windows down . . . but I am thinking maybe I should. It still has the original AM radio with an
FM converter under dash.

How the Electrical System Works, Or Why It Doesn’t
The electrical system of an automobile has a dual job.
The most vital one of these is supplying the electrical
energy required to crank and operate the engine. The
other job has to do with safety and convenience juice for
the lights, radio, heater and other electrical “appliances.”
It is much easier to understand the system if it is
divided into four parts.
The CHARGING SYSTEM which supplies all
the power for the other three.
The CRANKING SYSTEM which supplies the
power to turn the starter.
The IGNITION SYSTEM which enables the engine to start and operate continuously when the engine
is cranked, by delivering a series of precisely timed
sparks that ignite the air fuel mixture.
The LIGHTING AND ACCESSORY SYSTEM
which delivers the power to the lights, horn, radio, CD
player etc.
Broadly speaking, the battery and generator
(or alternator) work together to keep a supply of power
available for all uses. The regulator is a control device
designed to prevent damage to the generator, battery
and other voltage sensitive parts of the electrical system.
The main purpose for the generator or alternator
(here after - charging device) is to keep the battery full of
power. For unless the battery is charged enough to turn
the starter, the charging device can’t do its job.
When the engine is started the charging device
begins to convert the mechanical energy of the engine
into electrical energy needed to operate the electrical
devices of the automobile.
Without some method of controlling the output,
there would be much more electricity than needed and
too much is more harmful than not enough. Too little
power just won’t let the car operate properly or even at
all. Too much means the unit has to be replaced. The
battery itself can be damaged if it is overcharged and
then it will lose its ability to hold a charge. To prevent
this from happening, the regulator is connected into
the system between the battery and the rest of the system. The voltage regulator unit is used to limit the
voltage output by the charging device, so that the battery, distributor, lights, and other accessories can be
protected from high voltage. The voltage regulator is
preadjusted to limit voltage to a safe amount. As the
voltage reaches this limit a pair of contact points on a
mechanical voltage regulator begin to vibrate at a rapid
rate, opening and closing the circuit. This limits the voltage output of the charging device to the value for which
the regulator is designed.
The current regulator unit operates in a manner
Galaxie
similar to that of the voltage regulator. Its function is to
protect the charging device, to keep it from exceeding
its safe output as the electrical load is increased.
The cutout relay, or circuit breaker, is the third
device in the regulator box. Its job is to close and open
the circuit between the battery and the charging device
as required.
Whenever the charging device operates at a
speed which produces a voltage greater than the battery voltage, the cutout relay closes the circuit to the
battery. Current then flows from the charging device
to the battery. When the charging device slows sufficiently, its voltage becomes less than that of the battery. Since the electrical energy from the battery becomes dominant, current begins to flow back from the
battery to the charging device causing the battery to
discharge.
To prevent this waste of battery current, the
cutout relay promptly breaks the circuit between the
charging device and the battery.
Checking the battery with a hydrometer at each
lubrication interval and more often in hot weather. Recharge if necessary, and add approved water as required.
Keeping the terminals clean from corrosion
insures a good charging current to the battery by the
charging system.
Periodically, it is a good idea to check the charging rater to be sure the battery is receiving the proper
amount of current to keep it in good operating condition.
When the charging device isn’t working properly it is either putting out too much voltage or too little.
You can check it with a voltmeter.
Charging device problems are often due to dirty
commutators or brushes. In an alternators case a diode or two may go bad. Brushes are easy to replace,
but diodes can be a problem to replace on your own.
Take the alternator to a professional or purchase a remanufactured one. Always be sure the belts are tight
because a slipping belt can keep the charging device
from charging properly.
The regulator doesn’t need maintenance. Some
mechanical regulator can have the contact points
cleaned with a small riffler file if they build up corrosion.
You can also use crocus cloth on these small alloy contacts.
If one of your lights goes out and a new bulb
doesn’t help or it only lasts a little while, you most likely
have a short someplace. This is where a tester comes
in handy. But then that is another subject for another
article.

Axle Removal
I KNOW that a few of you have had this problem before...You remove your tire and rim, and remove the
four nuts that hold the axle retainer onto the rear end
housing. Then here you are with a frozen axle trying
to get it free from the housing. It has literally rusted
into place and you can’t budge it. Well try this...take
the rim with the tire on it and place it back on the
axle with the brake drum off. Now put the five lug
nuts back on, but only screw them down about a
quarter of the way. Next push the tire towards the
axle housing and then jerk it back towards you very
hard. It works like a dent puller and will jar the axle
bearing loose from the housing. I have used this
method on a number of cars that we took apart and
it has worked every time.
Battery Charging
I found that if you want to keep your battery charged
in a car that is stored outside, that the little $20 solar chargers that are sold at Wal-mart work great to
keep the battery up to level. Even an electric clock
can drain one and if you have a car or two that you
store outside in the winter, it can be a real problem
if the battery gets below a certain level because the
battery can then freeze which will ruin it.
Is Your Heater Not Heating?
Probably the very first thing you need to do is check
your coolant level. What happens is you can get air
trapped in the system which will keep the heater
from blowing hot. Your heater should blow at least
130 degrees if you are going to get the cold out of
the car. If the coolant is low and you still have the
problem after filling the coolant, try taking the heater
hose that is returning to the engine loose very carefully and allow the air to bleed out of the core. I had
this happen on our 1972 351 Windsor and that took
care of the problem. Thanks for the tip “Mike the Radiator Man”!
Not Sure if Your
Speedometer is Accurate?
wouldn’t worry. But if you find out you get to that mile
in 50 seconds you might want to have it checked.
I really went out to figure ours out. I have a laptop computer and purchased a GPS program with
a US map built in. It will actually tell me how fast
I am going. With that I was able to figure out that
our 64 fastback was going 12-14 miles slower than
the speedometer said. It had a 16 tooth gear on it.
The next one larger was the 18 tooth. ( You need to
get the cable to slow down under this circumstance.)
Now I am only about 3 mph off at 60 mph. I can live
with that! I had also noticed that the speed was even
more inaccurate the faster I went. Anyhow, that is an
alternative that works really well and if you are in a
local car club maybe you can pool some bucks and
get the program for the club.
Transmission Damage
When stuck in deep snow, rocking the car might
help, but don’t try it before checking with your owner’s manual—some automatic transmissions can
be damaged by rocking. Dig snow from around the
wheels, next turn the wheels from side to side to
push the snow away. Tap the gas gently and ease
forward. Try not to spin the wheels, it’ll only make
things worse. Carry a traction mat, salt or sand, and
a small shovel in your trunk for snow emergencies.
Breakdown Basics
With holiday travel and bad weather both upon us,
now is a good time to make sure that your vehicle is
equipped with these basics:
Do you maintain a working flashlight and
fresh batteries? A fire extinguisher? Jumper cables?
First aid kit? Tool kit? Flares? Is your spare in good
shape? Are gloves handy? What about a warm blanket?
Answering “no” to any of these jeopardizes
the lives of both you and your passengers. Check it
out!
Winter Driving
Tune-up your car before the first big freeze. Check
The easiest way to tell if you are accurate of course batteries and fluid levels throughout the winter. Warm
is to time a mile at 60 miles per hour. You should cars adequately each day and slow your speeds on
go one mile in a minute. If you are really close, I highways. Keep fuel tanks full and use a gas line
antifreeze to prevent fuel-system freeze-up.
