INDIA HABITAT CENTRE
The India Habitat Centre was conceived to provide
a physical environment which would serve as a
catalyst for a synergetic relationship between
individuals and institutions working in diverse
habitat related areas and therefore, maximise their
total effectiveness. To facilitate this interaction, the
Centre provides a range of facilities.
CONCEPT OF THE SYMBOL
The symbol has three basic elements. The downward

balanced, harmonious and improved way of life.
The bow in his left hand has been deleted
for purpose of design. The figure depicts the
phenomenon of the expanding form, quintessential
to the eternal repose, peace and order in
the universe.
The downward pointing triangle is a female symbol
representing “Shakti”. It is based on “Shri Yantra”,
a general term for instruments of worship which
include geometric forms. An amalgamation of the
two forms symbolize the creative activity of the
cosmic male and female energies in successive
stages of evolution. It is the archetypal marriage
represented in abstract form, a key to the secret of
cosmic and universal harmony.

Every city needs an iconic symbol to represent the
essence of its profile, its personality, its culture and
ethos. Indeed these iconic symbols are not as much
about monuments and heritage, these too yes, but what
really determines the livability index is the vibrancy and
pulsation of its cultural discourse and accessibility to
citizenship across all segments. In the ultimate analysis,
public discourse represents the concerns of society,
its contemporary state of being and its future direction.
It has been our endeavor to build such platforms for
conversation in the Centre on a variety of issues to flow
and people to partake of them.
The course of India Habitat Centre’s destiny has been set
on a firm course. It has become a unique concept in the
urban landscape. In a sense it felt its way through time
and evolved its personality, aided by the fact that there
were no precedents to look back on and no stereotypes.

The Habitat Learning Centre offers learning courses
on ICT to children and young adults from marginalized
communities and opened the third extension learning
centre outside Delhi in Rohanakala in Madhya Pradesh;
the other two extension learning centres outside Delhi
are in Aizawl in Mizoram and Baripada in Orissa. There
are currently six extension learning centres in Delhi.
Apart from an advanced course in computers, the
Habitat Learning Centre also offers learning courses on
accounting principles, content management, hardware
and networking, and visual documentation.
The Habitat Film Club continued to provide an
opportunity to belong to a fraternity that shares the
passion for cinema in all its multi-dimensional hues. Apart
from the Habitat Film Festival, each month featured a
selection of films from various countries and genres. A
retrospective and panel discussion featuring film legend
Amitabh Bachchan was organised as an anniversary
special for Film Club Members.

The signature initiatives of the Centre climbed another
notch in the year that passed.

Following the film festival, we had the second edition
of Delhi Photo Festival (http://www.delhiphotofestival.

as the theme. It was bigger and the range of lectures
and master classes was wide, varied and interesting, and
drew the interest of many amateurs and professionals.
This Festival was planned to bring photography, the
real democratic art form, into the public space, thereby
creating awareness of photographic arts and initiating
dialogue amongst its many practitioners and lovers. The
focus was on learning, sharing, showing new work, giving
voice to young collectives, interaction between photo
practitioners and enthusiasts as well as popularizing the
art of photography. The students of the Habitat Learning
Centre (HLC) participated in the festival with an exhibition
of their works as part of their skill learning process in the

endeavored to create platforms for public discourse
across different genres of the pursuit of excellence
by Indian minds. ‘Samanvay’ is a platform for bringing
together expressions of human thought in the varied

and have flourished in many languages spoken in our
cultural milieu. These conversations amongst brilliant and
well-known writers seek to bring to our audiences the
sparkle of multilingual expressions and their inspirations.
It is indeed the only festival of its kind and has emerged
as a unique platform for book lovers and young minds to
explore the world of the writers, poets and their works.

Functional English communication was also integrated
into the advanced computer course. In order to
familiarize the students in the HLC and in the extension
learning centres with all dimensions of applying and
using technology, examinations after the courses are
all online. This applies to the extension learning centres
outside Delhi as well. To enable sharing, learning and
reviewing, a weekly Skype meeting mechanism is
also in place. All this is in keeping with the focus to
empower the underprivileged through mainstreaming
IT in their lives. Please see Annexure 03.

The annual celebrations at the HLC provided the space
for showcasing the work of the children with reference
to their learning as well as their talents in dance, music

not being closed for stock inventory. Emphasis continued

subject matter the dancers and performers she sees

bodies and movements of the dancers on stage and use
these to paint a unique landscape, or Dancescape.

Annual Arts Evening
23 September, 2013
The India Habitat Centre’s Art Journal, since its inception,
has made regular endeavors to define and re-define
the various genres of art, which silhouette the larger
discipline of Visual Arts. The tenth Journal, Cross-Culture:
with special reference to Rabindranath Tagore not just
celebrated but interrogated the exponential figure in
the history of Indian art and aesthetics. In this issue we
continue our journey within the topography of Visual Arts:
Tagore is read here not as another idea but a metaphor
for fertilization of cross-cultural ideas.
The idea behind the theme of the journal is to share
and contextualize our own works at the Visual Arts
