Hi Everyone,
February has been a tough month with the snow and ice storms making it tough to ride our
beautiful Wings. I did manage to sneak in 600 miles on the good days. Spring is suppose to
be around the corner some place!
Lots of exciting things will be happening in the upcoming months. Next month we will start
monthly GWRRA University classes at the Elks Lodge in Greenville. The classes will be the
second Sunday of the month from 2 PM till 4 PM. Our first two classes will be Co-Rider and
Motorist Awareness presented by Mike O’Harrow. Please join us for knowledge and fun and
homemade chocolate chip cookies. CPR/First Aid will continue to be offered at our chapter
about every 3 months.
We also welcomed two couples to our chapter, Butch and Pat MacGregor and Edward and
Diane Beard. Both Pat and Diane will be helping several other members with the chapter
challenge for our SC District Convention. We are excited to welcome both couples.
The convention season starts next month with the Florida District Convention in Kissimmee,
FL. We have attended that one for the last three years and it is always a good convention.
April will bring the Alabama District Convention in Mobile. So far Eugene and Renee Dent and
Barb, Jerry and Sasha Taylor will be attending. Our own convention will be here before you
know it. If you have not registered please do and come and join us for a lot of fun. We plan to
enter the chapter challenge, mascot, scrapbook, chapter shirt and newsletter contests.
Several of us are taking the riding courses at our convention. Please consider taking them if
you can. There still were some spots available as of our meeting last Saturday. You must
register soon before the remaining spots are filled by other districts.
We are looking at plans to ride the Dragon and Moonshiners roads. We will continue with
lunch rides, dinner rides and chapter visits. There are so many nice places to go riding and I
will be looking for more fun places to visit. If you have ideas for fun places please email me
with suggestions. We try to provide different kinds of activities for you to participate. Please
join in the fun whenever you can. Just look at our pictures on Facebook and on our webpage.
We always have a lot of smiling faces. Don’t forget to look at our website and look for the
dollar sign so you can have a chance to win dollars.
We had a great meeting this month and set a record with 24 visitors. Folks from all three
visiting chapters said they had fun at our meeting. We also had 5 youngsters attending which
is great. We want them to grow up to be Goldwingers and GWRRA members.

Hi everyone,
Another cold month and not much riding was done but we were able to
participate in several fun events.
On February 8th, eight chapter members visited Chapter E in Simpsonville for
their chapter meeting. We had a great evening with our Chapter E friends.
February 15th was our dinner ride. We generally hold these events on Friday
evening but because Friday was Valentine's Day we were thinking that everyone
would want to spend a nice enjoyable evening with their sweetie, so on
Saturday evening, fifteen of us enjoyed burgers, fries and camaraderie at Five
Guys restaurant in Easley.
February 16th brought sixteen of us to Dave and Ruth Meyer's home for our
team meeting. A great meal was provided and then it was down to business.
We got a lot accomplished with a lot of brainstorming and friendship brought to
the table. At church that morning, we were given two tickets to Biltmore so on
Thursday five of us went to Biltmore and spent the entire day. We arrived as it
opened so we could take in an orchid tour. The orchids were so beautiful and
there are so many species. We had lunch and then did the house tour. You
could go there several times a year and see something new every time.
February 22nd we had two events we wanted to attend. The first was a plaque
attack in Anderson where we had 123 participants. What a great event!! It was
nice to catch up with people we don't get to see very often. It was a pretty day
so many of us arrived with our motorcycles. What a beautiful thing to see when
you approach a restaurant and see so many motorcycles in one place. In the
evening we had our chapter meeting. Some of the chapters that attended the
plaque attack stayed in the area and came to visit us. We had several members
and visitors, good food and a lot of laughter. Thank you to everyone that
participated and made this event so much fun.

I hope everyone is well. This month I would like to talk about tires. I have worked at a tire manufacturer for
the past 25 years. Of course this does not make me an expert, but I know they are round and black.
All tires are designed for a specific purpose. Tread patterns, plies of material, and composition of rubber all
determine how a tire will perform. Car tires are made for cars and motorcycle tires are for motorcycles.
Sorry to any darksiders out there, no manufacturer of tires or motorcycles approves of using car tires on a
motorcycle. Two completely different tire applications that do not mix.
Motorcycle tires have a very small contact area that gives us traction on whatever surface we choose to
ride on. For most of us here it will be pavement, but even that can be covered with various things. Water,
dirt, oil, gravel and paint are just a few examples of what can challenge us while riding. To give our tires
their best chance of doing their job, it is up to us to take care of them as best we can. Proper inflation is
the most important check we can make. This should be done when the tire is cold, at least 3 hours since
riding. The pressure you should use is listed on the sidewall of the tire. The manufacturer built the tire;
they should know how much air to put in it.
Tires continue to cure and the rubber gets harder with age and use. The rubber continues to cure as time
goes by; it’s just one of the properties of the rubber. Also using the tires causes heating and cooling cycles
that further cure the rubber. As the rubber gets harder the ability of the tire to keep traction goes down.
For this reason motorcycle tires should be changed every 2 years, sooner if there is any damage.
When tires are replaced, they should be the same brand at least. Tires should be installed by someone
that is trained and has the tools to do the job correctly without any damage. Dents in the rim or cuts on the
bead of the tire will just be trouble down the road.
Trikes fall under a different set of tire rules. They do not lean through turns, instead they steer flat like cars
do. Because of this, car tires can be used on them. Sizing and tire pressure should be given to you by the
trike conversion manufacturer. Also the standard front tire on a trike can be replaced with a Michelin Pilot
rear tire mounted in reverse rotation to give a larger contact area and decrease wear.
Tires are very important. They keep you connected with the road in all riding conditions, transfer power to
the road when you turn the throttle and bring you to a stop when you grab the brakes. They are your only
connection to the ground.
Thorough inspection including pressure check before starting out on each ride and a visual inspection at
each stop that is made.
Tires are your friends, be friends to your tires.

Hi, Everyone,
February 2014 is almost over and we are anxiously looking forward to Spring. This month was
another busy one for our members. Our Chapter Directors provided a CPR class at the beginning of
the month for those of us who need it for our levels program. We are very fortunate that one of our
Directors can give us this training. Most Chapters do not have someone in their group who
can provide this and they have to travel to receive this class for maintaining their level with GWRRA.
Take advantage of this and attend one of the classes at your convenience.
Besides maintaining our levels program, Chapter F continues to make Chapter visits, dinner rides,
and lunch rides to interesting places. This month saw us travel to Five Guys Hamburgers in Easley
for our dinner ride and The Gatehouse Restaurant in Pickens for our lunch ride. After lunch, we also
made a visit to the Pickens County Museum of Art and History to see what we could learn there.
Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge --- that's what we're all about.
In addition, several of us were able to travel to Asheville to Biltmore House for a great day seeing the
flowers in the hot houses of Biltmore. What beauty the flowers provided for us during the dead of
Winter. Asheville isn't that far away and we always find something there to enjoy. Mr. VanderBilt
really knew how to live and I'm sure having lots of money helped. The gardens and trails at Biltmore
were unparalleled when conceived in the early 1880's. The landscape architect, Frederick Law
Olmsted, showed his genius for design and his love of nature. The present descendants of Mr.
Biltmore have preserved many of the original plantings and flowers of the 8,000-acre Estate. What
beauty they have given the public by allowing us to visit. Take advantage of your opportunities and
visit when ever you can and enjoy all that it has to offer.
The Plaque Attack was held in Anderson with three of our group attending. Chapter E in Greenville
took the plaque so it will be close to home at the next opportunity. Let's all band together and attend
the next one and show how strong our group is. Make your plans now to attend the next Plaque
Attack in March !
As we look forward to March and Spring's arrival, we will continue our efforts to get new members to
attend our rides and meetings. We will call, email and send greetings so the new members will
participate in our fun activities. Let's hope they decide to check us out ! We hope more new
members will join us soon !

Couple of the Year Page
Hi Everyone
This month has not been as busy as last month. We went to visit Chapter SC-P
Lexington in the morning. That night we went to Chapter SC-E in Greenville.
On the second Friday we went to visit Chapter SC-A in Anderson on Valentines
day. Then we had our dinner ride on the 15th at Five Guys Burgers and Fries.
We attended the team meeting on Sunday. We had events three days in a row.
We are having fun planning the Couple of the Year basket for the chapter and our
little skit for the talent show.
In April we are going to the Alabama District Convention and compete in the best
dressed couple contest.
Can not wait to see where the day ride will take us next month, sorry that I
missed this month. I hope to be able to make next months ride. We have a good
time going to different places.
We have to watch out for Goofy and Goody when they are together. Who knows
what they will get into.
Hope everyone has a good month. I hope that everyone had a good Valentine’s
day. I did not get anything until the next day. Eugene blames it on the weather.
We both had to work all of those days but I managed to have a box of candy for
him on Valentines day.

Motorist Awareness

Hello,
I did not get to speak at my event last month so it has been rescheduled for
March.
To let you all know a little more about motorist awareness. Motorist awareness is
to teach everyone that bikes are also sharing the road with the vehicles and to
teach you how to be more visible to the other drivers. To be more visible to other
drivers it is best that you wear a helmet, gloves, pants, and a jacket that is a
neon color or at least has reflective tape on it. This is to make you more visible
to the other motorist during the day and night. We always want to be as visible
as possible. A light colored bike is also more visible than a dark one. You cannot
always pick your bike color but you can always put on more lights, change the
color of trim, add chrome or even place reflective tape on it. You can even add
reflective tape to your helmets, clothing, gloves and boots to make you more
visible. Also, some boots have reflective tape made into them. We need to
stand out as much as possible at all times.
I am going to work on talking to our mens group at our Church for April. Then in
May I plan on having a motorist awareness event at a rest area like we did last
year. Maybe Chapter ”I” would like to join us and work together like we did last
year.

Directors-GWRRA Warm or Cold - We are Wingers!
Lately our National news headlined all the frigid temperatures we were having all over
the Country. Many records on the cold side were shattered. We were constantly
concerned about the welfare of our Members all around the U.S. and Canada with the
plunging temperatures and the addition of lots of heavy snow.
As these extremes finally returned to just the normal winter conditions, we found
ourselves still thinking about our Members in the “Cold Country.” Having always lived
in either Southern California or Phoenix, we have trouble relating to these Members
and how they cope with winter conditions.
As we browse through the many newsletters we receive from many of the Chapters,
Districts and Regions, we noticed the many wonderful activities already planned for
our Membership during the winter. One more time we are reminded what clever and
innovative leaders we are blessed with throughout our Association.
Our Members are invited to “Winter Rendezvous”, “Winter Warm-Up”, “Beach Party
Wingo”, “Cabin Fever”, “Crazy Supper”, “Sweetheart Weekend”, “Spring Fling” and
lots more.
These fun-filled events all feature some very innovative ideas like a bike show (no
bike in person, just a picture) game nights, themes with costumes, skits, raffles for
Couple of the Year baskets, Funny Hat Contest, Swap meet, Mascot contest, Pet
show, and many more. These are all recipes for FUN. The ingredients are already in
your Chapter membership.
The best part of these great ideas for winter events can also be used in areas where
the very hot weather can limit our riding. I am looking forward to seeing some of
these clever ideas being featured inside the air-conditioned spaces while the
temperature outside is 105 degrees or more.
No matter whether your machine has 2, 3 or 4 wheels and is hot or cold, we have a
FUN activity planned for you. All we need is your participation and support. Ask your
Chapter Director today if you can help make it happen.

Region “A” Couple of the Year
Happy Valentine’s Day to All,
We hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season. Kim and I want to thank
everyone who attended the Annual Officer’s Meeting in Lexington, South
Carolina on January 11, 2014. The information discussed will set the trend for
the upcoming year in South Carolina.
Kim and I are asking chapter directors and their chapter members to stand
behind their Couple of the Year and support and encourage them to represent
their chapter with pride and participation. They are ambassadors of your chapter.
As Couple of the Year, your couple will have so much FUN and it just keeps
getting better and better. You’ll have great opportunities to meet and make new
FRIENDS and have great time doing it; that’s what it is all about. If for some
reason, they may choose not to participate in the selection process, at least ask
them to attend the selection process at the District Convention and be
recognized and support the other couples. We would like to thank all couples for
their dedication to their chapters and GWRRA, so keep on having FUN and being
yourself. Kim and I love all of you and want your Couple of the Year experience
to be great, and hope you have as much FUN as we are having. We are here for
you and if we can be of any assistance in any way to make this experience better

Kim and I have been out and about visiting chapters, attending Traveling Plaques

What a wonderful time and place to be! Of course we are not talking about
the cold weather this week, or the forecast for the next few days or weeks.
We are thinking of the beautiful state of South Carolina and being just
before spring. Also, as we hear from people our age and older, we are glad to be anywhere. We know
it is an exciting time for GWRRA in South Carolina. We have just finished an exceptional Chapter
Conference in Lexington. We feel that there was a lot of great two-way communication during this day,
and it was obvious that all were involved in catching up on the latest news with our friends from other
chapters. We are quickly approaching what looks like a very enjoyable convention at a great new
facility. We are also finalizing plans for a FUN picnic at Darlington Raceway. We have beautiful sights
to see from our roads in all areas of the state when we choose to get on our bike or trike and ride – and
ride – and ride. We are off to a very good start as well. All chapters have paid their charter fees and
have submitted their year-end Financial Reports. Margaret is working to prepare the IRS forms to
complete the annual financial activity. We ended the year with all chapters contacting the new
members on ARL reports. We had the most active year in University Training in several years – many
seminars presented, a University Trainer Development Course was held (another one to be announced
soon), an OCP in early January, and there is interest in a Horizon class. We have a range for rider
courses at our convention. A first aid/CPR course is scheduled for Feb. 8. We have a new rider course
instructor in South Carolina – Mike Melton of Charleston Chapter G. We have a great website that is
attracting a lot of attention, with over 11,000 times someone has looked at information on our website in
the past 7 to 8 months. We thank all of the members in South Carolina for their part in making all of
this happen.
This is also the time of year to take advantage of the cold weather. What advantage you ask? You
need to do something that does not involve riding, during a time while you cannot ride. That means
give your bike or trike a complete, thorough T-CLOCS inspection. Get ready to ride. You can also take
advantage of training that is going on in South Carolina or another nearby state. Get together with
chapter members for a scrap booking party, plan the next chapter overnight trip, plan the trip to Wing
Ding, plan a vacation, or hold a “cold weather party”. Get together with your chapter Couple of the Year
and give them an opportunity to practice answering questions “on stage”. You don’t need an excuse to
have fun. Get in a 4-wheeler with friends and visit a chapter.
Are you ready to warm up? How about planning a trip to Florida – for March 20 – 22 to Kissimmee and
attend the Royal Feast at the Florida District Convention. They promise FUN and it kicks off the
conventions in Region A. Two weeks later, go to Mobile, Alabama for Roman the Bay. Toga, toga, toga
– whoops, we got carried away, and thought about fraternity toga parties. Alabama will probably be a
little calmer than a fraternity party, but maybe my memory distorts the facts anyway. After these two
conventions, come join us for some real FUN in Florence, SC at Wings Over Cartoon land.
Come join us on the highways, but always remember to use your safety gear and ALWAYS RIDE
SAFELY!

We started off the month on February 1, 2014 with a chapter visit to SC-T in
Greer attended by Eugene and Renee Dent and Butch and Pat MacGregor. The
meeting was run by Phil Stone.
On February 8, 2014 Chapter “F” had 2 events.
The first event was a CPR class taught by Barb
Taylor at the Meyer’s home and attended by Jean
and Rick Kitko, Brian and Mandy Gillespie, Amy
Martin and Christopher Couvillion. After the CPR
class Barb Taylor joined Buzz and Bev Laplante,

I spent this month again with Buzz and Bev. It
was so cold but they kept me safe, warm and
well fed. We shared lots of talks, hugs and
laughter together.

placed me with her purse and I rode with them on the

had a great turnout at the meeting with good food,
great friends, lots of visitors and much laughter. I
really enjoyed seeing all the visitors and my Chapter F

GWRRA is all about, FUN. I got to go home with
Dave and Ruth for the month of March. Let's see

This month I did get
to go places. First, I
went to Chapter SCGoofy

followed by a visit to
chapter SC-E. Chapter E said they were coming
after the plaque and they did with over 18,000
points!

Member Spotlight
Jerry, Barbara and Sasha Taylor
Hi Everyone,
We are Jerry, Barbara and Sasha
Taylor. Jerry is a born and raised
North Georgia mountain man.
Barbara was born in St. Louis,
Missouri but moved to St.
Petersburg, Florida as a small child. She moved to North
Georgia in 1983. Sasha found us in December of 2007 and we
do not know her previous history. We do not have children but
we have sweet Sasha that we share with everyone and a big
cat named Sampson.
Jerry started at an early age riding motorcycles. His first bike

was a Honda CB350. He got that bike when he was around
fifteen. The bike needed some work so he took it completely apart to the frame.
He then painted everything and put it back
together again. Amazingly everything worked
and he got many years of riding from it. One day,
when he was sixteen, he was riding his bike and
passed a church that was having a funeral.
There was a cop there waiting to direct traffic for
the funeral. Guess what, Jerry didn’t have a
motorcycle license at that time and just knew the
cop was going to stop him. Luckily the cop just

Not many people get an easy pass for a driving test. His next bike was a new
1980 Suzuki GS550E. He rode this bike for about four years. In 1985, he looked
for another bike. This time he did look at Goldwings but his feet could not touch
the ground so he bought a new 1982 Kawasaki KZ750. Yes, I did say a new
1982 bought in 1985. The bike had been setting in the warehouse for a few
years. He also purchased the fairing, trunk and saddle bags to fully dress it out.
He still has this bike but it has been sitting for years. It would be great to restore
it but it would cost too much to do it. In 2009, he bought a black 2007 Goldwing
with navigation and still rides it today. Jerry would like to trade it in for a newer
Goldwing so sometime soon he may have a different bike.

Barbara did not start riding until August, 2007. She had admired the Goldwings
for many years. When she turned 60 her thoughts were get a bike now or you
will never do it. So I bought a 1500 Goldwing 1995 the 20th Anniversary model
that had been triked. Jerry made me realize with
my knee issues and never driving a motorcycle
before that a two wheel model was out of the
question. I bought it after riding on it with him
and Jerry drove it home. Jerry then taught me
the basics of driving a trike. I thought it would be
easy because I drove a manual transmission for
about 5 years, but it is different on a motorcycle.

2007 two wheel 1800. Then we both rode and I
loved it. In February 2012 I could not stand it any
longer I had to have an 1800 too. So I purchased a
2005 yellow trike a 30th Anniversary Edition. I love
my yellow trike it is the Sunshine Express. We have
ridden our bikes all over the Southeast and to all of
the region A states. We also have been to
Tennessee, Virginia, North
Carolina, West Virginia.

Sasha Taylor is our live mascot and rides on the bikes with
us either in a pouch on our chest or in a new Kuryakyn pet
carrier mounted on the passenger seat. In addition we have
two stuffed mascots Sasha-1 and Sasha-2, that participate in
the mascot contests at conventions. Sasha has even been
in the Wing World magazine in a full page photo on
Barbara’s trike.
We joined GWRRA in August 2007 because we wanted to
learn more about Goldwings and ride with folks that loved

active participation from the chapter. Last year we won two District mascot

One of our first adventures on the trike was a trip down the entire length of the
BlueRidge Parkway for our anniversary in October, 2007. To save money we
camped out. We also did not have heated gear.
A cold front moved in the day we left. We
learned several things on that trip: when it is
really cold and you are on a motorcycle you need
more than love to keep you warm. Also, setting
up and taking down camp every day is tough.
Third, if there are bears around, a motorcycle
does not afford much protection.

We also have a lot of good memories from 2010
when we visited all 30 chapters of Georgia (they
had 30 then) in less than five months with both of us working full time! We also
began visiting South Carolina chapters at that time.
We took the Officers Certification Program in August, 2010 because we wanted
to learn more about the organization and knew at some point we wanted to be
more involved and become officers. Even Sasha
was there for the entire program. When we told
Larry and Mary that we wanted a picture with
Sasha they could not believe Sasha had been
there the whole time. After all, this is a day and a
half course. In April, 2012 we stepped up to be
the Treasurer and Membership Enhancement
Coordinator for Chapter “F”. In May, 2013 when
Eugene and Renee stepped down we stepped up

Barbara is a Registered Nurse and recently retired from Gwinnett Hospital
System in Lawrenceville, Georgia after 26 years of service in the Imaging
Nursing department. Previous to that she worked in Cardiac Care Units including
Open Heart Units and Intensive Care Units for 18 years. Teaching CPR/First Aid
classes to our members is a pleasure and a passion for her. She taught it to
medical personnel first and now finds it more fun to teach our GWRRA family.
She is enjoying retirement allowing her more time to ride her beautiful Wing,
participate in GWRRA activities and visit her family in Florida more often. She
was very thankful that she was not working with the snow storms we had this
year. Not having to get up at 4:30 AM is also a blessing. It seems like she is
busier now after retiring than when she was working full time. Her dream ride is
to have plenty of time to travel on our bikes out West and see the Grand Canyon,
Yellowstone, Tetons, Rocky Mountains and everything in between. If someone
could just win the lottery we could make it
happen a lot sooner!
Barbara’s hobbies are photography,
motorcycling, GWRRA and gardening. Jerry’s
hobbies motorcycling, GWRRA, gardening
(hydroponics) and trying to find ways to do things
that everyone says can’t be done.

Mascot Corner
Hi to all my Friends,

We had another snow
storm this month and I
played in it again, wow
what a winter! The
snow was very
beautiful.
Things cleared up enough that we could go to
GA-S Funday in Winder, Georgia. The theme
was old
fashioned
Valentine. I went
as the Queen of
Hearts, check out
my costume. It
was good to see
our Georgia
friends especially
I’m in my Queen of Hearts Costume.

On the 16th was the team meeting at Dave and
Ruth’s home, I always enjoy it there. They have
a big yard that I can wander around in and it’s
nice to see Little Bit their cat too. She is more
my size, our cat at home is twice my size. We
had fun as usual at the team meeting and I also
got to meet new members Ed and Diane Beard
up close (I am in my bag at the meetings so I
can hear folks but not see them).
I missed the Biltmore trip and the plaque attack but I got to ride to our monthly
meeting with Dad on his 2 wheel wing (I love to lean with him). Our monthly
meeting was something special with a record 24
guests, I sure heard a lot of laughing going on!
Since I missed the Biltmore trip Mom took me for
a ride on the 24th. Goofy and Tweety also came
along for the ride. At one point when Mom got
off to take a picture Goofy got in her seat and
started driving. He was going so fast that the
wind was blowing my ears back. I was riding in
my hard sided pet carrier which mounts on the

passenger seat and I really like it. I put my head
driving too fast!!
