St Dominic’s Day
With so many wonderful things happening
in the lives of our young people on any day
at Cabra, it was fitting that our celebration
of the feast of St Dominic would be such a
joyous occasion. As usual our day commenced
with Mass in Caleruega Hall for almost 1200
people with the altar placed in the centre of
our community. We are grateful that Fr Charles
Gauci was able to celebrate the Eucharist on
our special day.
Throughout the Mass one couldn’t help but be
touched by the reverence and participation of
all students in this sacred gathering. As Mass
ended with the singing of the college song all
present witnessed first-hand the very strong
sense of community spirit shared by so many
here at Cabra.
Wishing each other a Happy St Dominic’s Day
with enthusiasm and sincerity is our way of
giving thanks for the many blessings we receive
by virtue of the fact that we live in a prosperous
nation and that we get to study and work at
Cabra.
While celebrating St Dominic’s day, we take
time to remember that we are the beneficiaries
of the gift of Dominic Guzman to the world over
eight hundred years ago and of the generations
of Sisters who founded and nurtured Dominican
education here at Cabra over the last 128
years. As you can imagine, we were delighted
to have a number of the Sisters join us for mass
and morning tea afterwards.
Talent Quest
Even at Cabra it is rare to find hundreds of
students queuing before the end of recess to
get into classes – or the Hall at least. Yet this
is exactly what happens on St Dominic’s Day;
such is the excitement that builds just before
the opening of our annual talent quest. Thank
you to the organisers and all of the student
performers who made it such a memorable
occasion.
Kopanang
On page 4 you will find a brief report and a
few images of Sr Sheila Flynn’s recent visit to
Cabra. Sr Sheila is one of those people who do
an incredible amount of good in the world and
offers us the opportunity to support those who
are less fortunate than ourselves. Listening
to Sheila talk about their work at Kopanang
it is hard not to be inspired. If you would like
to know more about this amazing project or
how you could support its work please follow
the link to their website found on the Middle
School News page. In a few minutes you will
see why the students found Sr Sheila’s talks
so engaging.
Year 11 Retreat
We are very pleased to offer our Year 11
students an opportunity to take some time
out on Thursday and Friday this week for their
Retreat. As they enter the last eighteen months
of formal schooling and as they consider future
educational pathways and life beyond Cabra,
it is important for them to spend a little time
reflecting upon the adults they wish to become.
Retreats also invite students to consider their
relationship with God and the importance of
making time to nourish their spiritual lives
while living a full life in a very busy world. May
they return feeling refreshed, confident and
optimistic about what lies ahead.

IN MEMORY OF CHLOE By: Catherine O’Halloran
This is Chloe. She lost her battle with cancer last year, at
the age of 3. Before she passed away, her wish to meet
Dorothy the Dinosaur and to swim with dolphins was
granted. This made the end of her beautiful, short life just a
little easier for those around her because she was smiling. It was organisations such as Make a Wish and the Starlight
foundation that helped with this.
Myself and some friends are running the City to Bay 12km
this year in memory of Chloe and to raise money for the
Starlight foundation. None of us are ‘runners’ so it’s been a
bit of a journey for us as we prepare ourselves, however on
the days when a run is a bit hard, we just think of Chloe and
all the kids and families doing it tough in hospitals. If you
would like to sponsor my run and contribute to the Starlight
foundation, please follow this link.

On Thursday 7th August Cabra flew
their flags at half-mast in memory
of the lives lost on Flight MH17.
The Government declared the day
as a National Day of Mourning
to honour the victims of the
Malaysia Airlines Flight.
“We all continue to mourn
the loss of Flight MH17.
There were 298 innocent people
on this aircraft and their deaths
offend our sense of justice.
We grieve for all, but particularly
for the 38 men, women and children
who called Australia home.
Our hearts go out to all their families.
We will support them through
the difficult times ahead.”

There is a fascinating array of questionable
food lurking in the Unley library. Produced
by Kate Lymn’s Year 6 and 8 semester-one
classes, the students have brought Roald
Dahl’s novel successfully to life: snails and
slugs slither over surfaces, multitudes of
eyes peer at you from cake tops, seemingly
ordinary bowls of spaghetti are transformed
into frightful concoctions with severed fingers.
The clay medium lends an extra dimension of
disgust through greasy, slimy glaze.
St. Dominic, on earth you opened your
heart to the miseries of your fellow
human beings, and your hands were
strong to help them; now in heaven
your charity has not grown less nor has
your power diminished.
The South Australian Living Artists Festival
(SALA), is a state-wide exhibition, running
until 24th August. Witness the Disgusting
Degustation for yourself at the Unley Library,
181 Unley Road, Unley.
On our behalf, pray to our mother Mary
and to her divine Son, Jesus, for all
those who are suffering loss and grief.
We pray too for God’s peace to enter

SR SHEILA FLYNN O.P. VISIT
The College has been very fortunate to
again have a Dominican Sister, Sr Sheila
Flynn O.P., visit the College this week.
She has been working with a number
of students throughout the Middle and
Senior School as well as sharing her
experiences with staff.

Sr Sheila spoke with such passion

about the work she and others are
doing in South Africa. She is part of an
initiative that was started in 2001 called Kopanang - meaning
‘gathering together’. Here they can learn skills that will lift
them into a new awareness of the power of community, where
they can share their cultural and spiritual stories.
Sr Sheila shared many of her stories about the people she
has met. It was this human element that made it very real
for those that had the opportunity to listen to her speak. It
has been heartening to hear our students ask what can we
do to help. A great place to start is to have a look at the

ST DOMINIC’S DAY
Also I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone that was
responsible for making ‘St Dom’s Day’ a fantastic day. The
behaviour and participation of the students was outstanding.
St Dominic envisaged a community that believed that
becoming our best selves for the sake of fullness of life
was imperative. Our students certainly gave the best of
themselves last Friday.
FROM OUR YEAR 6 STUDENTS

hh We were fortunate to have Sister Sheila come to Cabra
and talk about how she works with woman and children
in South Africa. Sister Sheila started the Kopanang
Community Centre in 2001. It started in an old
abandoned shed which is now the fantastic Kopanang
Community Centre where the women in the community
earn money by hand stitching and embroidering items
to sell. The women get 66% of the money from the
pieces they produce and the rest goes to buy materials.
Kopanang supports many children each day, providing
them with much needed food and clothing. Sister Sheila
was so inspiring and we hope we can support Kopanang
in future.

hh “On August 11 we had Sister Sheila come and talk to us
and show us some Aboriginal and African art.
hh We made a picture using coloured folded circles and
squares that we cut to turn into an amazing picture.
hh We all made a design on an A4 piece of card and then
we placed them all together and it made a huge creative
piece of art.
hh We all had fun and got to know Sister Sheila very well.
hh On the 12th August we had a talk from Sister Sheila.
She was very inspirational because she has built lots of
buildings for the African children to go to school and be
fed and to be safe around other kids. She told us some
sad stories about some young girls who have had a tough
life but now she has made them happy and joyful. We
hope she can come again soon”

MIDDLE SCHOOL ART AND
DESIGN EXHIBITION

On Thursday night August 7th, parents and friends
were challenged and intrigued by a diverse range
of works from our art and design students in the
Middle School.
It was a chance for conversations between the
artists and their audience around four themes:
spirit, cellular, symmetry and hybrid. The
students’ work presented diverse interpretations
from geometric sculpture suspended from helium
balloons to surrealistic heads with strange
protrusions. Parents, friends and family were
inspired by the standard and the nature of the
art and design. Students were immersed in ideas
from both contemporary and historical contexts.
To all the parents and friends who visited the
exhibition, we are grateful for your support. Thank
you to all our staff who assisted with great time
and effort in framing, hanging and catering for
the event; and to the teachers for their creativity
in implementing themes with clever and engaging
projects for the students.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS
TRUTH, ACTION AND HUMILTY
Our recent St. Dominic’s Day was a wonderful
way to celebrate the strong sense of community
which we have here at Cabra Dominican College.
In the lead up to our own St. Dominic’s Day
Mass on Friday last week our Senior Student
Leaders and I attended the St. Dominic’s Day
Deputy PRINCIPAL
Masses which were held at Blackfriars Priory
Senior School
John Cameron
School, St. Dominic’s Priory College and St.
Mary’s College. We were privileged to be invited to attend each of
the Dominican Schools and gain an insight into the special way they
acknowledge and celebrate the Feast of St. Dominic.
Our Senior Student Leaders and I were warmly welcomed into each
of the communities. One of the most powerful ‘teachable moments’
which the students experienced during the week was a deeper
understanding and awareness that their Cabra Dominican College
story is indeed part of a larger story which exists not just in other
schools Adelaide but across the globe. Three key common themes
which were woven through each of the Eucharistic celebrations
we attended were centred around ‘truth’, ‘action’ and ‘humility’
associated with St. Dominic’s life and teachings.
TITRATION STAKES

Two teams of Year 12 students from Cabra entered the school round
of the Australian National Titration Competition.
In a fierce competition that demanded advanced technical skills, high
levels of precision and a combined team accuracy of less than 2%
error, one of our teams progressed to the State Finals.

DOES HELP YOUR ITALIAN STUDIES!

Last week the Stage 1 Italian Language
students visited Gelatissimo and Cibo Coffee
Shops in Gouger Street to experience Café culture. The owner of
Gelatissimo, Tony Gagliardi, treated the students to a history of
gelato making plus a demonstration and taste test. The students
were required to place an order in Italian and then write a report
on their impressions of the business. They were asked to comment
on the service, quantity and the quality of the ice cream and other
products and general ambience of the shop. They were then asked
to compare their experience with Cibo down the road.

cioccolato e nocciola, ed erano
abbastanza buoni. Secondo me,
il gelato da Cibo era piu denso
e questo non mi piace. Però,
devo dire che il caffè di Cibo era
il migliore. Sopratutto, tutti e
due I negozi avevano I prodotti
di ottima qualitά. Il gelato da
Gelatissimo era piu costoso, però
le porzioni erano piu generose

hh Translation: At Cibo I tried two
flavours, chocolate and hazelnut,
they were quite nice. According to
me, the ice cream at Cibo was dense
and I don’t like that. However, I must
say the coffee at Cibo was the best.
Both shops had excellent products.
The ice cream at Gelatissimo was
more expensive but the portions
were more generous.
VET AWARD WINNER
On Saturday the 2nd August, the successful team participated in the
State Finals. Pitted against about 15 other schools and their teams,
our Year 12’s worked independently and confidently to titrate1 an
unknown solution of sodium carbonate against hydrochloric acid in
the 2nd floor Reid laboratories at the University of South Australia.
While they did not pass through to the national finals, we are very
proud of the efforts of our Chemistry students that represented
Cabra. Congratulations to Caleb W, Eleanor B and Alycia E.

Congratulations to Year 10 student Sophie O’D, who has been chosen
as the VET Award Winner for semester 1 at the Centre for Creative
Photography (CCP).
Sophie has personally won a prize of $300 and Cabra Dominican
College will also receive a $300 Total Photographics Voucher.
Sophie is working towards a Certificate IV in Photo Imaging through
CCP. She started the course this year.
I have also heard that Olivia Artini (2013 Stage 2) has now completed
her Certificate III in Children’s Services under the Training Guarantee
for SACE students (TGSS).

LEARNING THROUGH VOLUNTEERING
OLD SCHOLAR REUNIONS

This semester my Year 10 SACE Personal
Learning Plan (PLP) class began the
volunteering aspect of their program. In
collaboration with Mr Cameron we have
been working in the Tech Room making dog
kennels. The long term aim is to build our
skills in design and carpentry and to produce
pieces of work that could be donated to
people in need or sold. Our next project is to
build a Cubby House.
The class has learnt to adhere to safety
requirements in a woodwork area,
to competently use a range of tools
independently and two fabulous dog kennels
are almost finished. Students are very much
enjoying the practicality of the class and their
confidence and their skills have improved.

Class of 1974 40 Year Reunion
The Book Week theme for this year is Connect to Reading
and our annual dress up day this year is Books to Movies.
All Year 6-8 students and their teachers are invited to
participate. Get your costumes ready for week 6, Tuesday
the 26th, great prizes to be won so be as creative as
possible.
Ms SB and Mrs Mills came to the Middle School assembly
on Wednesday and showed you some great ideas on what
you could do but we are positive there are hundreds more
you could come up with. We can’t wait to see all the Mary
Poppins, Wolverines, Harry Potters, Sherlock Holmes,
Princesses Anna and Elsa and Frodo Baggins.

CABARET 2014 – SEPTEMBER 6

The Music Department is looking forward to
hosting the Cabra Cabaret on September 6
at the Westbourne Park Community Centre.
Guests will be seated at tables of 10 but there
will be room for dancing while we enjoy the
entertainment provided by students, staff and
friends of Cabra.
Bookings for this event are via our new
ONLINE BOOKINGS page on the Cabra website.
Tickets are $15 adult/$10 child U18 (plus
booking fee). All performers will be issued their own complimentary
ticket prior to the event. This event is BYO: nibbles, beverages and
your own glass. Please do not wear stilettos or shoes that will harm
the floor.
The ensembles involved are:
Yr 12 soloists, Yr 12 group, Staff/parent Band, Staff/parent Choir,
Concert Choir, Jazz Train, Revelation, Jazz Band, Stage Band, Senior
Rock Band and Drum Corps.
Calling any interested parents and staff who would like to join our
combined choir to perform at the Cabaret this year. Rehearsals will
take place in the Choir Room on Thursday 21/8, 28/8 & 4/9 from
3.45pm-5.00pm. If you are interested please let Sarah Heaslip know.
We are looking forward to a fun, vibrant act for the night.

place on the weekend.
On Saturday August
2nd we were fortunate
enough to have two
games where Cabra
played Cabra in both
Soccer and Netball
and by all accounts
t h e d i s p l ay s o f
sportsmanship and
Cabra School Spirit were fantastic. The Year 10A Soccer Team came
up against the 10B boys in a highly anticipated match on Saturday.
Both teams were very keen to show the other what they were made
of! The boys all had a fantastic time
and played the game within the rules
and in good fun. The 10A’s won on
the day 4-1.
REMINDER: Winter Sport Team/Knockout
Professional Photos are taking place in Week
5 on Thursday 21st August between 2:00pm –
5:00pm. Students are reminded to check their
time slot for photos and be at St Dominic’s Hall
ready and in their correct uniform.
CONGRATULATIONS
Zachary S (7B) has been selected
to represent South Australia in the
upcoming Phil Ginsberg under 13
National Ice Hockey Tournament
being held in Adelaide on August
7-10. His team will be playing against
NSW,VIC, QLD, WA, QLD and the ACT
The 9A Netball Team played against
the 9A2 Netball Team in a close
contest with all girls from both teams
giving their all. The girls all thoroughly
enjoyed playing against their school
friends from other teams and all
showed great teamwork throughout.
The 9A Team snatched victory in the
end defeating 9A2, 27 to 20. Well
done to all girls.
He has also been selected to
play in a Tournament next year
in Newcastle NSW representing
South Australia against teams from
Japan, Korea, USA, Canada and NZ.
