It’Sugar, Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy, Dylan’s Candy Bar, and Fuzziwig’s Candy Factory have dedicated vast swaths of their stores to not only licensed candy, but also soda, apparel and home goods such as pillows and cushions. Varying approaches The approach to stocking the stores with licensed goods varies: • The 86-store It’Sugar chain relies mostly on direct-to-retail (DTR) agreements, including apparel and home goods. • The 116-store Rocket Fizz chain bottles its own licensed soda – Three Stooges root beer is the most recent addition – in Northern California. But Rocket Fizz also relies on candy manufacturers to supply other licensed products like its former World Wrestling CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 Views & Notes from CES, Outdoor Retailer The New Year brings a series of trade shows in a number of industries, with developments and sidenotes of interest to the licensing community. Rita’s Italian Ice will target apparel, candy and home furnishings, while Whelan has made 400 designs available for home décor. Midwest department store chain Von Maur is testing sales of t-shirts from licensee Palmer & Cash bearing National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) vintage Ranger Rick character, as NWF gears up to unveil 10 new characters at Licensing Expo in June, says NWF’s Deana Duffek. The NWF also recently signed a publishing deal for Ranger Rick early reader books with Harper Collins, with the first titles due in 2017. NWF also is developing new characters based on its Ranger Rick Jr. magazine. The American Red Cross brand will be applied to freeze-dried food under an agreement with The Ready Project, with Target, Walmart and Amazon expected to launch online sales in February, says The Ready Project’s Dan Moss The Utah-based company specializes in selling freeze-dried supplies and emergency kits under The Ready Project, Chef’s Banquet and Lindon Farms brands. The initial products will likely be 72-hour food kits for two and four people with plans for extending that up to a one year supply in 2017, says Moss. The products play into the American Red Cross’ disaster preparedness programs, says the American Red Cross’ Stephen Glockenheimer. U.K-based retailer/brand owner Sports Direct International bought CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 INSIDELICENSING 2 NEWS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 an 11.5% interest in Iconix Brand Group, potentially laying the groundwork for “making proposals” for changes in the company’s structure, Sports Direct said in an SEC filing. Sports Direct purchased 5.5 million shares in 25 separate transactions, including 773,460 last week. The purchases came as Iconix struggled financially and is a target of an SEC investigation into whether its joint ventures should have been combined with its “historical results,” Iconix has said. Sports Direct owns Dunlop, Everlast, Slazenger and other brands and operates 661 retail stores under the Sports Direct, Lillywhites and USC banners. Kate Spade has launched sales of Klondike-branded cross-body bags, coin purses and iPhone phone cases that are being sold through its web site and department stores. The initial agreement may be extended to other Unilver brands, says Seltzer Licensing’s Stuart Seltzer. This is Kate Spade’s second venture into ice-cream brands; more than a decade ago, it featured a series of bags with typographical representations of Hagen Daz flavors, under license from brand owner General Mills. The Boy Scouts of America will break into hiking boots for the first time under an agreement with Richlife. Richlife, which is a private label shoe supplier, will develop boots in two styles -- for Boy Scout leaders and for scouts themselves -- says Richlife’s Matt Brown. Columbia Sportswear is adding a new wrinkle to its licensing program. The apparel supplier is adding its technologies to licensed goods, Columbia’s Matthew Merriman says. Some of London Luxury’s new Columbia throws and pillows, which are being sold through Kohl’s and the apparel company’s stores, feature the company’s Thermal Coil insulation technology. The London Luxury products represent a return to a category that Columbia dropped several years ago when a licensing agreement with Revman Industries lapsed, says Merriman. Meanwhile, licensee WWW.LICENSING.ORG Delta Galil’s new Columbia underwear contains the company’s Omni-Wick technology for reducing moisture. Columbia also is returning to golf apparel under an agreement with Outdoor Custom Sportswear. Outdoor is designing branded men’s polo shirts, wind jackets and vests, raingear and shorts that will ship in the spring. Columbia previously developed golf apparel internally. Licensed cellphone case supplier Ecell Global is boosting manufacturing capacity 20% in the U.S. and UK this year as it seeks to slash production time, says Ecell’s Cem Celikkol. Ecell makes cellphone cases under a range of licenses.. Ecell’s total daily total production will rise to 12,000 units, including factories in Orlando, Fla., Blackpool, UK and the Philippines. The increased manufacturing will cut turn around on orders to 1-3 days from 3-5 days in the UK and U.S., says Celikkol. Jazwares’ Tube Heroes are moving into sleepwear. Based on YouTube gaming personalities, Target launched sales of Minecraft-based The Diamond Minecart (TDM) two-piece children’s pajamas from Global Brands Group’s sleepwear arm, American Marketing Enterprise. The pajamas, which are aimed at 4-10-year-old children, also will be available through Kohl’s, The Children’s Place and other retailers starting in March featuring You Tube personalities including the Minecraftfocused CaptainSparklez channel that is operated by Jordan Maron. The push into pajamas follows strong sales of Bioworld’s Tube Heroes t-shirts, the first of which were sold through Target last summer. “We look at what t-shirts are selling” in choosing which Tube Heroes to feature on pajamas, says AME’s Jennifer Nitz. Pajamas are “typically secondary” to t-shirts, sales of which influence retail buying decisions in the sleepwear category, says Nitz. Primark launches sales of Somerbond’s Pringles men’s and women’s pajamas and socks, marking the start of the brand’s product launch across the UK and Europe, says Pink Key Con- January 19, 2016 sulting Richard Pink, who is representing the Kellogg’s brand. The licensed products are the first for Europe and the UK since Kellogg’s acquired Pringles from Proctor and Gamble in 2012. Additional deals have been struck with Roy Lowe (socks in Europe), Shanghai Huge Scents Co. (tin boxes and trays), Sodiret (apparel in Europe) and Gibson (jigaw puzzles). The initial gear adopted contemporary designs that mimics those found on Pringle’s cans, Pink says. Joester Loria represents the brand in North America. Walmart is closing 269 stores, including 154 in the U.S. -- largely Walmart Express -- and 60 in Brazil, eliminating what it called underperforming locations. The restructuring marks the first large-scale store closings in the chain’s history. Meanwhile, Macy’s will close 36 stores by early spring as part of a $400 million cost-cutting program that will streamline operations into five regions and 47 districts. Macy’s says it expects that some of the $375 million in sales at the closed stores will be captured via ecommerce or by nearby Macy’s stores. Macy’s said in November it would close up to 40 stores after a 3.9% drop in same-store sales. Aurora World Inc. signs an agreement with Precious Moments, consolidating plush and soft dolls under a single licensee. Enesco (plush) and Luv N’Care (soft dolls) were previous Precious Moments suppliers. Aurora’s plush dolls will be the brand’s first in 11 years. Aurora unveiled the new Precious Moments products last week at the Atlanta International Gift and Home Furnishings Market. Puig brings its Jean Paul Gaultier perfume business in-house, ending a licensing pact with Shiseido’s Beaute Prestige International. The label’s fragrances, known for being packaged in torso-shaped bottles, will fall under Puig Chief Brand Officer Jose Manuel Albesa. Puig acquired a majority stake in Jean Paul Gaultier in 2012 and will cut the product line to two collections, CONTINUED ON PAGE 10 INSIDELICENSING 3 Shows CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 manufacturers had displays; and the onslaught of devices to be integrated into home systems as part of the “Internet of Things.” Licensing – both overt character and brand licensing as seen in such booths as Sakar (a full array of character cameras, karaoke machines, headphones, speakers and such), Crosley Radio, Curtis International and Sentry Industries, and less obvious licensing of well-known consumer electronic nameplates by television manufacturers. For example, Chinese TV maker Hisense is employing a two-pronged retail strategy with the licensed Sharp brand serving as a step-up to its own TVs. Hisense will be aggressive on price with TVs sold under its own brand with a 43inch ultra-high definition (UHD) model retailing for less than $400. On the Sharp side there will be 25 Internet-ready sets ranging from 3275 inches. Hisense licensed the Sharp brand as part of deal struck last year under which it also bought Sharp’s factory in Mexico for $23.7 million to move its TV production to North America. Meanwhile, licensee TongFang – which gained the Westinghouse license in late 2014, rolled out its first sets under the label, including 55-, 65- and 75inch UHD TVs with curved screens that are due late this year starting at $699. Long-time RCA brand licensee On Corp, which switched its name to Activeon last year, demonstrated 65-, 55and 50-inch TVs based on Google’s Android operating system as well as a tablet with detachable keyboard and a smartphone. Activeon is a licensee of Technicolor, which owns the RCA brand. Outdoor Retailer Above left: Sakar introduced several licensed molded waterproof Bluetooth speakers Above right: the Kodak brand lives on in Pro video via licensee JK Imaging The show was rife with licensed brands. Among the more interesting notes: *Pendleton Woolen Mills displayed its core apparel and blankets along with the products of licensees. AS one Pendleton executive said about licensees: “We trust you with our brand, why shouldn’t we include you in our brand statements?” *Dickies also included both core and licensed product in its corporate booth. While stores carry Hello Kitty, Candy Crush and other licensed candy and merchandise, they devote the vast majority of display space to their own brand, including an array of such things as jewelry. The 13-store chain recently opened locations at Hobby International Airport in Houston, TX and Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Meyers, FL. •Colorado-based Fuzziwig’s Candy Factory has 63 franchised and company-owned locations in the U.S. with 1,400 varieties of licensed and non-licensed candy along with novelty soda, plush and collectibles, including Star Wars and Tootsie Roll lunch boxes. It has a new store slated to open in Wellington, FL, another in the Bahamas, a franchisee in the United Arab Emirates with one store slated to open (and others potentially on the drawing board). Overall, the company expects to open 10-15 stores annually. Merchandising strategies While the sale of licensed product is a common thread that runs through the retailers, the chains differ in their strategies for expansion and their merchandise mix. While It’Sugar and Dylan’s Candy Bar focus on companyowned locations, Rocket Fizz and Fuzziwig’s are going the franchise route. RocketFizz also concentrates its merchandise mix on entertainment, TV and movie properties for its sodas, while It’Sugar seeks out licensing pacts with major candy brands including Mondelez International and Hershey and draws on financial backer Creative Artists Agency (CAA) for help in securing This It’Sugar store in Manhattan’s West Village had a full display of Sour deals with musiPatch Kids merchandise. cians and athletes. It’Sugar is retailer, which posted sales of about growing rapidly along the East Coast, $80 million in 2014, plans to continue with six stores expected to open by its licensing initiative with Perfetti Van early this month to expand the FloridaMelle (PVM)’s Chupa Chups brand that based chain to about 86 locations. The began with a store-within-store format for licensed products last year, including pillows and t-shirts, as part of a two-year agreement. It’Sugar and PVM are discussing other possible collaborations, says Rubin. In addition to merchandise developed via the DTR agreement, It’Sugar also has access to Chupa Chups licensed products sold in Europe, where the brand has about 60 licensees, says PVM’s Christine Cool. It’Sugar has struck similar DTR apparel/candylicensed deals with Mondelez (Sour Patch) and Hershey (Nerds) for licensed apparel and other products. With the help of CAA, It’Sugar also plans to add a roster of licensed products based on musicians and athletes in 2016. Rocket Fizz, with 116 stores, bottles its own licensed sodas in Northern California WWW.LICENSING.ORG January 19, 2016 CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 INSIDELICENSING 5 Candy retailers CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 The Florida-based chain also tested international expansion with shopin-shops in Selfridges in the U.K. But the agreement with Selfridges ended in 2014 and It’Sugar has returned to expanding in the U.S. where it can “better focus” its resources, says It’Sugar’s Jeff Rubin. Array of licensed soda Meanwhile, Rocket Fizz is making a move into the New York market, having signed a development agreement with a franchisee for four stores in Nassau County on Long Island. It will continue to build out its roster of 115 licensed and non-licensed sodas that included the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard, Judge Joseph Wapner of People’s Court fame, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and others. About 15% of Rocket Fizz’s sodas are licensed brands with the remainder carrying its own banner. It also distributes licensed sodas, typically three to five brands, to other retailers as a means of raising awareness of franchisee stores in a given market. California liquor store chain BevMo! has sold Rowdy Roddy Piper and Judge Wapner sodas. “We do a lot of research and data analysis, but we don’t have a crystal ball,” says CandyRific’s Robert Auerbach, whose company has licenses for candy-based novelty items with Disney, Warner Bros., DreamWorks and others. “So these types of stores can provide a proving ground for our products since they have a broad assortment and give us a pulse as to whether something is selling,” revive old ones that have been languishing. For example, Rocket Fizz has sold Golden Records soda, including Mighty Mouse Blue Cream. The licensing agreements with the retailers can be for as little as six months, but are generally in the 2-5-year range. Royalty rates also vary, but are typically in the high single digits. “We want to offer things that aren’t found in the typical candy store or grocery market and that is where licensing comes into play in that it allows us to be different,” says Rocket Fizz’s Rob Powells. The specialty retail chains also have benefitted licensors seeking to introduce a new brand or raise the profile of an existing one, says Cool. “We have seen many new licensees getting a renewed interest because these chains are really a window into American retail,” says Cool. “They are not massive retailers, but their stores are in hot spots and it definitely gives a brand exposure.” Differentiation The chains’ sales of licensed products helps raise their profile and also separates them from the thousands of other stores selling candy, says Rubin. It’Sugar, when possible, tries to merchandise by brand – for example, pairing licensed candy with similarly branded apparel. The specialty retailers also seek to ferret out brands with less exposure that are relatively new to licensing or WWW.LICENSING.ORG Dylan’s Candy Bar specializes in its own brand, but managed to put Star Wars front and center in this New York location.
