Katrina Kolt 28 April 1995 As a part of a series “My Minyan” “The reason I belong to Kedem is that I want to be counted as part of a minyan and to participate equally in synagogue ritual.” A smaller minyan is more personally involving.” “despite some disagreement regarding the format of the service, most people involved cherish the opportunity to try new tunes and experiment with different prayers.” “Kedem provides a forum for those wishing to come closer to Judaism and to learn how to participate in the service in a nonthreatening environment. It provides the opportunity to learn how to lead a service and take responsibility in the community. “It is a place to regain empowerment as a Jew” Page 8 Deborah Stone 4 October 1996 Letter response to columnist Ibn Ezra: “There are accessible minyanim where newcomers are welcome and nobody is kept out by high seat rentals. “At Kehillah David Hamelech (Kedem) subscriptions are self-assessed. No one misses out on a warm community and a place to share their Judaism because of money. Julie Howard (nee Andrews) took the lead on coordinating music, working and splitting duties for a few years with Libby Appelboom. When Julie moved to Hong Kong, Libby coordinated Kedem’s music. When she led music, she often partnered with her husband, Lionel. Kedem at its outset was participatory and experimental, with members eager to allow people to try new things they wanted to and were willing to do – and music was no different. “It felt like Netzer,” Libby said. “It was me and Lionel, and we had been doing that at Netzer. I felt quite comfortable.” Spring 2014 With encouragement, other music leaders emerged, each with unique musical taste and LQÁXHQFHV DQG .HGHP·V PXVLF FRQVWDQWO\ evolves. “I think the different voices that people bring and the different perspectives make each time you go a bit of an adventure,” said foundation member Marlo Newton. “When somebody stands up to give the D’var, you haven’t heard them every week for 20 years.
