A Note on The Four Seasons
A Note on Emergence
A
C
n undisputed classic and an audience
favourite from its first performance,
James Kudelka’s The Four Seasons was
hailed “a masterpiece of our time” by The
New York Times at its premiere in 1997. Set
to Antonio Vivaldi’s renowned and beloved
score of the same name, The Four Seasons
is an abstract ballet that explores the cycle
of life of an everyman. Each section is
constructed around a pas de deux between
the Man and a woman representing that
season.
Spring, or youth, begins with the innocent
and thoroughly enraptured young man
dancing with a woman while bird-like flights
of exuberant young men and women dart
past. Summer is alternately fast and languid,
passionate and acrobatic, its bursts of frantic
energy broken by sultry pauses until the
sexual tension erupts again in the complex
and risky lifts. By Autumn, the season of work
and harvest, the Man has reached high
middle age, enjoying comradeship rather than
serving primarily as a romantic figure. The
Autumn woman is left shivering at the end as
if a cold front had descended without warning.
In Winter, the Man is suddenly vulnerable,
tormented first by one, then by three, young
bullies before joining a stately and quietly
ominous dance with four elderly people. In
the pas de deux with the Winter woman, we
slowly become aware that she is the harbinger
of death, watching with compassion as the
Man dances a final solo embodying the
physical infirmities of old age. He dies in her
arms as the other seasons’ ladies bid farewell.
rystal Pite is known as one of the most
innovative and exciting choreographers
at work in Canada today. In 2009, Artistic
Director Karen Kain commissioned Pite to
create an original work for the National Ballet’s
first Innovation series, a programme of new
work by Canadian choreographers. The
result, Emergence, brought audiences to their
feet after every performance and went on
to win four Dora Mavor Moore Awards for
Outstanding Production, Outstanding New
Choreography, Outstanding Performance
and Outstanding Sound Design/Composition
by Owen Belton. A riveting dark-hued work
that casts a swarming, scurrying group of
dancers, insect-like, in an eerily subterranean
universe, Emergence dramatizes through
its mesmerizing choreographic attack the
ways in which the instinct for creating social
forms seems hard-wired into life itself. Pite’s
inspiration for the work came from reading
Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants,
Brains, Cities and Software by American
popular science theorist Steven Johnson
and considering parallels between the social
organization of bees and the hierarchical
nature of classical ballet companies.
Key to Pite’s vision for Emergence was her
collaboration with composer Owen Belton.
Also from the west coast, Belton uses both
acoustic and electronic instruments, often

in combination with computer processing
techniques such as granular synthesis, to
arrive at atmospheric palettes of sound and
tone. Pite and Belton have incorporated
drone-like sounds of bees along with sounds
of marching to signify the power and ominous
presence of the body politic.

Selected Biographies
Karen Kain, C.C., LL.D,
D. Litt., O.Ont.
Artistic Director
Long recognized as one
of the most gifted classical
dancers of her era, noted
for her compelling
characterizations and
versatility as a performer,
Artistic Director Karen Kain
is one of Canada’s most
renowned and committed
advocates for the arts. Born
in Hamilton, Ontario, Ms. Kain
received her training at
Canada’s National Ballet
School in Toronto, joining
The National Ballet of Canada
in 1969. She was quickly
promoted to Principal Dancer
with the company after her
sensational debut as the
Swan Queen in Swan Lake. In
1971, Ms. Kain was awarded
the Silver Medal in the
Women’s Category at the
prestigious International Ballet
Competition in Moscow
and, along with her frequent
partner at the time, Frank
Augustyn, received a special
prize for Best Pas de Deux.
Subsequently, she embarked
on a remarkable international
career during which she
performed many of ballet’s
greatest roles with such
companies as Paris Opéra
Ballet, Roland Petit’s Le Ballet
de Marseilles, the Bolshoi
Ballet, London Festival Ballet
and Vienna State Opera
Ballet. Throughout her career
she also developed a close
creative partnership with Rudolf
Nureyev and often performed

with him. A favourite of some
of the world’s most prominent
choreographers, she
premiered many new and
important works during her
time as a dancer. Ms. Kain
retired from dancing following
a farewell tour in 1997 and
took up the position of Artistin-Residence with the National
Ballet, a role that
was later expanded to that
of Artistic Associate. In 2004,
she restaged Rudolf Nureyev’s
landmark version of The
Sleeping Beauty for the
company and the following
year was named Artistic
Director. Ms. Kain has
received many Canadian and
international awards throughout her career, testifying to
her accomplishments both as
an artist and an advocate for
the arts. She is a Companion
of the Order of Canada, the
first Canadian recipient of the
Cartier Lifetime Achievement
Award and was named an
Officer of the Order of Arts
and Letters by the Government
of France. In 1997, Ms. Kain
was honoured with a Governor
General’s National Arts Centre
Award and received a Governor
General’s Award for Lifetime
Artistic Achievement in 2002.
From 2004 to 2008, she was
Chair of the Canada Council
for the Arts. In 2007, she was
presented with the Barbara
Hamilton Memorial Award
for demonstrating excellence
and professionalism in the
performing arts. In 2008, the

Arts officially opened, a tribute
to Ms. Kain’s ongoing
contributions to the cultural
life of her country, and in
2011, Ms. Kain was honoured
by the International Society for
the Performing Arts with the
Distinguished Artist Award.
James Kudelka, O.C.
Choreographer,
The Four Seasons
James Kudelka is widely
acknowledged as one of North
America’s most innovative
choreographers. His mastery
of both classical ballet and
modern, contemporary dance
has earned him commissions
from companies – some 25
in all – as stylistically diverse
as American Ballet Theatre,
Chicago’s Hubbard Street
Dance and BJM Danse
Montreal. Even as a student
at Canada’s National Ballet
School, Mr. Kudelka
demonstrated a choreographic
interest in exploring innovative
approaches. While adept
in the classical ballet
vocabulary, he infuses it with
a contemporary sensibility
acquired from his intense
interest in modern movement
idioms. Mr. Kudelka’s work
covers an impressive range,
from virtuoso pas de deux,
through large-scale and always
arresting adaptations of such
classics as Swan Lake, The
Nutcracker and Cinderella,
to boldly innovative creative
collaborations with dancers,
designers and musicians.
Mr. Kudelka has never been
afraid to tackle psychologically
challenging subject matter in
his story ballets – he views
dance as a primary medium
of artistic discourse – and
through his gift for movement
metaphor infuses poetic,
emotional meaning into his
many non-narrative works.
After nine distinguished years
as Artistic Director of The
National Ballet of Canada
(1996 –2005), Mr. Kudelka
continues to undertake
collaborative projects that
engage and challenge him
as a choreographer.
Carmen Alie, TRAC
Costume
Costume Designer,
The Four Seasons
A graduate of the Contnoir
Capponi School of haute
couture, Carmen Alie has
been working in costume
design since 1986. A former
professional dancer, she
founded TRAC Costume in
1987 in collaboration with
Denis Lavoie. From 1987 to
2001, they created costumes
for many choreographers
as well as dance and theatre
companies, including American
Ballet Theatre, The National
Ballet of Canada, San Francisco
Ballet, Boston Ballet, Les
Grands Ballets Canadiens
de Montréal, and O Vertigo.
In 1994, they designed Mick
Jagger’s wardrobe for The
Rolling Stones’ “Voodoo
Lounge Tour”, proving the
diversity of their talent. In 2002,
Ms. Alie created the wardrobe
for the television series Grand
Ourse, directed by Patrice
Sauvé.
Denis Lavoie, TRAC
Costume
Costume Designer,

Denis Lavoie’s name is
associated with more than a
hundred productions, mainly
in dance and theatre. He
has contributed to works
by Fortier Danse-Création
(Paul-André Fortier), Cas
Public (Hélène Blackburn),
O Vertigo (Ginette Laurin), Les
Grands Ballets Canadiens,
the National Ballet of Canada,
BJM Danse Montréal, the
American Ballet Theatre (NewYork) and the San Francisco
Ballet, BalletMet, Boston
Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Joffrey
Ballet, National Slovak Theatre
(Bratislava) and Ballet de
Lorraine (France). In 1994,
he designed Mick Jagger’s
wardrobe for the Rolling
Stones’ Voodoo Lounge Tour.
He has also worked in theatre,
with directors Claude
Poissant, Martin Faucher,
Fernand Rainville and Serge
Postigo. In addition to his
work as a designer, Mr.
Lavoie has been involved in
training for the past ten years,
teaching classes, seminars
and workshops on costume
design at various schools
and organizations including
the Dance Department at
the Université du Québec
à Montréal, Concordia
University and En Piste (Circus
Arts National Network).
In 2004 he received a Prix du
Public from Théâtre DenisePelletier for best costumes
for his work on Molière’s Les
Femmes savantes, directed
by Martin Faucher.
David Finn
Lighting Designer,
The Four Seasons
David Finn has worked for
major opera companies across
the globe and has lit a wide
variety of productions
including Ariadne auf Naxos,
Idomeneo, Bluebeard’s
Castle/Erwartung, Pelléas et
Mélisande, Lady Macbeth
of Mtsensk, Otello, Falstaff,
Faust, Così fan tutte, Don
Giovanni, Le Nozze de Figaro,
Peter Grimes, The Flight of
Lindbergh and The Flying
Dutchman. His productions
for the Canadian Opera
Company include the
complete Ring Cycle as well
as Macbeth and Venus and
Adonis. Mr. Finn has worked
with The National Ballet of
Canada, Australian Ballet, Lyons
Opera Ballet, Les Ballets of
Monte Carlo, San Francisco
Ballet, Paul Taylor Dance
Company and Twyla Tharp &
Dancers, among others.
He was Resident Designer for
Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White
Oak Dance Project from 1993
to 2000. For Cirque de Soleil,
he designed the lighting for
ZED, a permanent production
at Tokyo Disneyland. He
also designed scenes in
Martin Scorcese’s film The

Age of Innocence and in 1999
directed the award-winning
documentary, The Green
Monster.
Stephen Sitarski
Guest ConcertmasterViolin Soloist,
The Four Seasons
Recently named the
Concertmaster of the Hamilton
Philharmonic Orchestra,
Mr. Sitarski holds the same
position with the Esprit
Orchestra. He was also with
the Kitchener-Waterloo
Symphony for 15 seasons
(1997 – 2012). Mr. Sitarski
has been a Guest Concertmaster across Canada and
the US, working with many
distinguished conductors
including Mstislav Rostropovich,
Philippe Entremont, Raymond
Leppard, Bramwell Tovey,
and James Judd. He has
served as Associate Concertmaster of the Canadian
Opera Company Orchestra,
the Winnipeg Symphony
Orchestra, and was Guest
Concertmaster and Featured
Soloist with the National Ballet
Orchestra for Onegin and
Russian Seasons in 2011.
Mr. Sitarski frequently appears
as Soloist with many concertos
in the standard repertoire as
well as concertos written
especially for him by Canadian
composers such as Kelly-Marie
Murphy (Blood Upon the Body,
Ice Upon the Soul, 2006
premiere with KitchenerWaterloo Symphony) and
Glenn Buhr (Violin Concerto,

2000 premiere with KitchenerWaterloo Symphony). Mr.
Sitarski is a founding member
of Trio Laurier and is a regular
participant in diverse chamber
groups and festival events
nationally and internationally
with many of Canada’s finest
musicians. Mr. Sitarski was
just awarded the Queen’s
Jubilee Medal, a nomination
submitted by the National
Youth Orchestra, where he
is a faculty member. He is
also on the faculty of Wilfred
Laurier University in Waterloo,
Toronto’s Glenn Gould School
of the Royal Conservatory
of Music, and is a frequent
mentor for Hamilton’s National
Academy Orchestra. He has
taught at the Banff Centre for
the Arts, was an instructor
at the University of Manitoba,
and has maintained an active
private studio.

Vancouver-based choreographer and performer
Crystal Pite has created works

Ms. Pite is a former company
member of Ballet British
national.ballet.ca
Columbia and Ballett Frankfurt.
In 2001, she formed her own
company, Kidd Pivot, and
continues to create and
perform her own work. Kidd
Pivot tours nationally and
internationally with productions
that include Dark Matters,
Fault, Lost Action, Uncollected
Work and Double Story,
created with Richard Siegal.
Kidd Pivot received the Alcan
Performing Arts Award in
2006. Ms. Pite is an Associate
Dance Artist of the National
Arts Centre and Associate
Choreographer of Nederlands
Dans Theater. She was the
recipient of the 2008 Governor
General’s Mentorship Award.
Owen Belton
Composer, Emergence
Owen Belton graduated from
Simon Fraser University in
1993 with a degree in Fine
and Performing Arts with
a concentration in music. He
studied music composition
with Barry Truax and Owen
Underhill. In his work, he
uses both acoustic and
electronic instruments, often
in combination with computer
processing techniques such
as granular synthesis.
A technique that allows
composers to alter sounds,
granular synthesis has become
a signature characteristic
in many of his compositions.
Over the last ten years,
Mr. Belton has written music
for many dance companies,
including Nederlands Dans
Theater, Cullberg Ballet, BJM
Danse Montreal, Ballet British
Columbia, The Royal Ballet,
Stuttgart Ballet and Kidd Pivot
and choreographers such as
Crystal Pite, Matjash Mrozewski
and Chick Snipper. He also
creates sound design and
score for theatre and film.
In 2009, Mr. Belton won the
Dora Mavor Moore Award
for Best Dance Score for
Emergence.
Jay Gower Taylor
Set Designer, Emergence
Jay Gower Taylor began as
a professional dancer and
enjoyed an international career
spanning over 20 years.
During this time, Mr. Taylor
developed his skills as a
designer and builder. Some
of his first designs for the

David Briskin is renowned for
the scope of his repertoire
and the depth and beauty of
his interpretations. Whether in
the classical or contemporary
idiom, from works steeped
in tradition to cutting edge
modern compositions, Mr.
Briskin brings a sure hand and
a sensitive understanding to
the dramatic and choreographic
life of the music he conducts.
Before joining The National
Ballet of Canada in 2006, Mr.
Briskin served as conductor
with American Ballet Theatre
in New York City for seven
years, directing performances
at the Metropolitan Opera
House, City Center and
numerous ballet and opera
houses around the world. In
demand as a guest conductor,
Mr. Briskin has worked most
recently with such companies
as New York City Ballet and
San Francisco Ballet. Later
this season, he will make his
debut at Covent Garden in
London conducting The Royal
Ballet. He has appeared with
The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago,
Houston Ballet, Les Grands
Ballets Canadiens de Montréal

others. For three seasons,
Mr. Briskin served as Music
Director of Pittsburgh Ballet

University of Toronto Faculty
of Music. Mr. Briskin’s

A native of Sydney, Australia,
Ormsby Wilkins has been
Music Director of American
Ballet Theatre since 2005.
After taking his music studies
at the Conservatories of
Sydney and Melbourne, Mr.
Wilkins joined The Australian
Ballet and became Resident
Conductor in 1982. Moving
to Europe in 1983, he was
appointed Conductor with
England’s Sadler’s Wells
Royal Ballet (now called the
Birmingham Royal Ballet).
With Sadler’s Wells, Mr. Wilkins
toured North and South
America, Eastern Europe,
Israel and South East Asia.
Mr. Wilkins continued his
association with The Australian
Ballet, having been invited to
guest on many occasions for its
extensive engagements. Other
international engagements
have included Teatro all Scala,
Milan, the Rome Opera Ballet,
the Ballet of Teatro San Carlo
of Naples and the Royal
Swedish Ballet. Mr. Wilkins has
conducted many orchestras
around the world, both in
association with ballet and
in concert. They include the

Ernest Abugov
Stage Manager
Ernest (Ernie) Abugov has
served as Stage Manager of
The National Ballet of Canada
since 1973, working with
every Artistic Director in the
company’s history from Celia
Franca to Karen Kain. He has
traveled with the company
all over the world touring to
Israel, Asia, Europe, Mexico
and throughout North America.
Mr. Abugov has worked with
many of the world’s most
renowned choreographers
who have created original
works for the National Ballet
including Alexei Ratmansky,
John Neumeier, William
Forsythe and Glen Tetley. Mr.
Abugov was born in Montréal,
Québec. Before beginning
his long association with the
National Ballet, he worked
with Les Feux Follets, The
Charlottetown Festival,
La Poudriere Theatre and The
Studio Lab Theatre. He worked
at Expo ’67 in Montréal, stage
managing over 4000 puppet
shows. Mr. Abugov also
toured with Harry Belafonte.
In what little spare time that
he has, Mr. Abugov guestlectures to theatre students.
Jeff Morris
Stage Manager
Born in Toronto, Jeff Morris
studied technical theatre
production and administration
at Ryerson’s Theatre School.
After leaving Ryerson, he
became Production Stage
Manager for Toronto Dance
Theatre (1990 – 1995). With
Toronto Dance Theatre
he toured extensively, stage
managing the company’s
debuts in Berlin, Warsaw,
Beijing, Tokyo and at the
Joyce Theater, New York
City. He was Production

The National Ballet of
Canada Orchestra
The National Ballet of Canada
is privileged to have its own
full orchestra with over 60
members. The orchestra has
performed in each of the
National Ballet’s seasons and
is led by Music Director and
Principal Conductor David
Briskin. The company’s first
Music Director was George
Crum who, along with
Founder Celia Franca, was
a pioneer of the company.
Mr. Crum held the position
from the company’s inception
in 1951 to 1984, when he
was appointed Music Director
Emeritus. The orchestra was
led by Ermanno Florio from
1985 to 1990. Ormsby
Wilkins was Music Director
and Principal Conductor from
1990 to 2006. The National
Ballet of Canada Orchestra
has toured extensively with
the company through Canada,
the USA and Europe. Over
the years, the orchestra has
received much acclaim from
audiences and critics alike
and has recorded two CDs of
Michael Torke’s compositions
for The Contract (The Pied
Piper) and An Italian Straw
Hat. The orchestra made their
concert debut at Koerner
Hall on April 3, 2012, in
celebration of the company’s
60th anniversary.

What do you find compelling about ballet?
Because ballet has both visual and aural components, unlike
other wordless forms of art, I think it lends itself best to
experiences of transcendence. Ballet for me can be more
nuanced and powerful. At the same time, it can make you feel
alive in a very visceral way. The variety in programming at the
National Ballet demonstrates this clearly. Ballets like Chroma
and In the Upper Room – both highly physical – especially inspire
feelings of transcendence.
What were your prior experiences with dance?
I grew up in Thunder Bay and, on occasion, the National Ballet or
Royal Winnipeg Ballet would perform there. Though this did not
happen very often, it was enough to spark my interest. What
really cemented my interest was borrowing taped performances
of ballet from the public library. Once I moved to Toronto, I finally
had regular access to ballet and to the energy and intensity of
live performances.
What do new productions mean to you?
New productions keep ballet vital. By creating new work, we
allow ballet not only to express and embody traditional themes
like beauty, harmony, and decorum, but also to grapple with
more contemporary sensibilities, such as angst, displacement,
and uncertainty.

What inspires you to donate to the National Ballet?
I was originally drawn to the energy, variety, and dynamism of
the National Ballet. This is particularly true of the company today,
when it is making itself known once again on the world stage by
touring internationally. I think it is every citizen’s duty to ensure
that artistic expression and experience remain available to us,
and a company of the calibre of the National Ballet is an ideal way
to make this happen. The National Ballet enriches the cultural life
of our country and expands the reputation of Canadian arts abroad.

n addition to donations made in their lifetime, many donors have also established
gifts in their estates or through financial planning to help guarantee the future
of artistic excellence at The National Ballet of Canada. These legacy gifts reflect
