2014/15 Annual report OUR MISSION Social Support Our mission is to build better futures through the delivery of health care, education, and social services. We embrace culturally diverse communities to provide them with the highest quality of care, regardless of ability to pay. Health Care Education 2014/15 Proudly recognized as a Patient-Centered Medical Home for combining access, teamwork and technology to deliver quality care 2 011 M ary ’s C e n t e r B oa rd o f D i re c tors The Mary’s Center Board of Directors brings a breadth of expertise to advise and support our work, representing the fields of finance, public policy, health care, philanthropy and marketing, to name a few. We are proud that more than 50 percent of our Board members are patients of our health services. These Board members help us to identify areas for improvement in our programs, while enhancing the quality and timeliness of our services for everyone that comes into our doors. MEMBERS: Andrea Lindemann Gilliam, Chair Nikola Garber Nina Albert, Vice Chair Errin Green Matthew Klinger, Treasurer Clay Harris M. Lucero Ortiz, Secretary Edward Mariga Mervyn Alphonso Belen Mendoza Donald “Skip” Bean, Jr. Nedelka Phillips Dave Chandrasekaran Kathy Whelpley Nicole Fuller Fro m th e B oa r d C h a i r and the Pres i de nt Dear Friends, We have so much to celebrate and be proud of this year, including the growth in our medical care services in Maryland and the performance of our Dental team, which operated 6 days a week and attended to almost 30,000 dental visits, in addition to operating the Dental Cruiser at 5 schools. We were invited to expand our School-Based Mental Health program and served 145% more students in the 2014–2015 school year than last year. With a collaborative and extremely committed team, here are just a few of our accomplishments: • 91% of children under 3 are fully immunized; • 89% of asthmatics have their condition under control; • 89% of overweight children received nutrition and physical activity counseling; • 100% of our seniors (24) in our After-School Teen Program were accepted into college. Most of these teens are the first in their families to even graduate high school. Another cause for celebration is the fact that Mary’s Center has weathered the recent financial storm, thanks to the tireless work and partnership of our team and Board of Directors, the understanding of our vendors, and the unfailing and heartfelt generosity of our friends and donors. A strong organization needs to be advised and supported by a committed Board of Directors. The Strategic Plan process our Board led so vigorously will ensure that Mary’s Center continues to excel in providing quality care; in caring for our team members; and to be relevant to our changing community while maintaining our commitment to our resilient immigrant neighbors. We’re also excited about the recruitment of new Board Members whose skills and experience will support the implementation of the Strategic Plan and help us with our long term sustainability efforts. In evaluating the opportunities in the new public healthcare arena, the Board and team of Mary’s Center will focus equally on the following pillars over the next five years: 1) Elevate the mission of Mary’s Center in the communities we serve, 2) Ensure financial sustainability overtime, 3) Deliver the highest quality of care and experience to all of our participants, and 4) Retain and attract the highest quality team members. Without the kindness and generosity of our supporters, we would not have had the stability to improve the quality and sustainability of an organization that transformed the lives of 36,000 participants. Next year, our goal is to deepen our partnership with our participants to enable them to enjoy a healthier life while prospering economically; the key to abolishing poverty for the next generation. Equally important, we want to reassure our team members and supporters of our commitment to investing in our future sustainability. We continue to strive to be one of the best workplaces in the region and we’re looking forward to implementing our new Employee Recognition Program to acknowledge and express our deepest gratitude to our team for putting their knowledge, heart and soul into improving the lives of an entire region. Mary’s Center is looking to the future with confidence. We thank you for your partnership, friendship and support as we continue this arduous journey together. He is one of the 1,000 students (out of 57,000 applicants) to be awarded this prestigious scholarship. He was also 1 of only 4 students selected from Washington, DC. Hermann has enrolled at Pennsylvania State University and hopes to study Bio-Medical Sciences or Veterinary Sciences. “This is the best thing that could ever happen. It’s a big blessing! My mom didn’t know how she would pay for college. The scholarship is a game-changer for me,” says Hermann, whose family is originally from Cameroon in West Africa. Hermann heard about the Gates Millennium program at a college and scholarship fair held at Mary’s Center and received encouragement from the Teen Program staff during the application process. Excellence in CDC Immunization Champion Our Nurse Manager Vivian Cativo won the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2015 Childhood Immunization Champion Award for the District of Columbia. This prestigious annual award recognizes individuals who make a significant contribution to improving public health through their work in childhood immunization. 6 /A n n u a l report 2014/15 First Graduating Class of Medical Assistant Program In the summer of 2015, the first Medical Assistant Program graduated 14 students in partnership with Briya Public Charter School. Their certification guarantees a livable wage for their entire family and is the first step in furthering their education. Effective Group Care Services In August 2014, Mary’s Center became one of only three CenteringPregnancy official sites in Washington, DC, certified by the Centering Healthcare Institute (CHI). CenteringPregnancy is a unique model of prenatal care provided to groups of women with similar due dates. In 2015, we expanded this program to our clinic in Prince George’s County. Based on the effectiveness of this model and thanks to a generous grant from the DC Department of Health (DOH), we also held our first group medical visits for patients with diabetes, hypertension, and for new parents and their infants. M ore Hi g h l i g h t s P Our model as a Center of Excellence has been recognized with financial and pro bono support to boost our services and improve health outcomes in the region. Our gratitude goes to: CareFirst and March of Dimes for strengthening our maternal and child care programs Verizon for supporting our victims of domestic violence Walmart for helping us with our uninsured adults at the Prince George’s location and The Advisory Board Company for providing leadership training for management P For the fourth consecutive year, Charity Navigator gave Mary’s Center its coveted 4-Star Charity rating, thanks to our financial health, and accountability and transparency in our stewardship of donations. P The excellent performance of our Health Exchange Navigators and Assisters, who helped 2,383 individuals enroll in the health insurance marketplace in the District of Columbia and Maryland, was rewarded with recognitions from DC HealthLink and Maryland Health Connection. Annual report /7 T he I n f lu e nc e of ou r S o ci al Change Mode l o n Pe r sona l Tr a nsf or m ati on A Bright Future Beckons Ms. Ortega beams with pride, celebrating how far she has come with the help of Mary’s Center and our education partner Briya Public Charter School. Originally from the Dominican Republic, Ms. Ortega was 3 months pregnant, stressed and depressed when she first came to our health center. Today, she is full of hope and looking forward to a bright future. She is a true example of the power of our holistic social change model to transform lives every day. As a Patient-Centered Medical Home, Mary’s Center has partnered with Ms. Ortega to provide her with access to a variety of services and training opportunities to live a happy and economically prosperous life with her family. She is especially grateful for the Early Intervention Program for Children with Special Needs. Thanks to this care coordination program, her son Benjamin is receiving therapy to help with his speech delay. From not being able to say a single word at age one, today he is learning to speak and recently said the word “Mom”, which made Ms. Ortega’s heart soar with joy. Benjamin can also communicate his basic needs, an incredible, reassuring milestone. Social Change Model Social Support Mary’s Center uses a holistic, multi-pronged approach to partnering with individuals and families. Through this approach, our Social Change Model, we look at all of the stresses in our participants’ lives and deliver Health Care Education an integrated set of health care, education, and social services to put them on the path toward good health, stable families, and economic independence. 8 /A n n u a l report 2014/15 Early Intervention Program for Children with Special Needs Dental Services at i on ⇢ Econ omic Su cce ss l Support ,E du c Child Care Licensing Program Family Literacy Program Home Visits , th ia Soc Insurance Enrollment Assistance al Medical Services H Behavioral Health Services WIC Program, for supplemental nutrition and breastfeeding counseling Annual report /9 e S o u rce s of R e v e nu e ( Totaling $39 M) and s pons ors 11% Rental/Leased Employees/Other Income 8% Contributions & Fundraising 46% 35% Patient Revenue Federal/Local/ Foundation/ Corporate Grants Free Care Provided $6.5 million 20 12 $6.9 million 20 13 20 14 20 15 $4.3 million $4.7 million (projected) Mary’s Center has provided over $22 million worth of free care between 2012 and 2015. Mary’s Center will continue its commitment to the uninsured in order that they may live a healthy and prosperous life. 10 /A n n u a l report N o c he T ropi c a l G a l a 20 14 2014/15 ($4 46,000 r aised) Angel Falls Sponsors Adams Investment Group Anonymous CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Clark Construction Group/ Clark Charitable Foundation Pepco Holdings, Inc.
