PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
May, one of my favorite months of the year. New life
begins in May as the grass turns green and the early
spring flowers start to peak their little heads through
the soil. Speaking of new - Mitzie Wasyliw, past
owner of Dew Productions, one of the largest
entertainment companies in North America will be
speaking at the EWI Dinner meeting held at the
Calgary Marriott Hotel, May 18. We have never had
Mitzie speak at our dinner meetings, so she is new to
EWI. Mitzie was nominated and selected as “2009

nominations include: Wild Rose Foundation Volunteerism Award 2002,
Rotman Canadian Women of the Year Awards 2002, Women of

CHAPTER NEWS
Retention Goal Star
Thankyou From Doris Harris
Last year, the EWI Corporate Retention and
Recruitment Committee collected retention goals
from each Chapter. EWI of Calgary was one of 12
Chapters recognized in the Corporate Connect for
meeting or exceeding the retention goal they set.
Calgary had a 91% retention!
I would like to thank the EWI Group for the lovely
get well card sent to me while in hospital wishing
me a speedy recovery. Also, to the Sustaining
Members for the lovely bouquet flowers sent to me
when I arrived home. Both remembrances were
very much appreciated.
Executive of the Year
I am feeling better now and walking with a cane, so
should be already to join everyone at the next
meeting.
Hot Heels Update
Our annual Hot Heels Fashion Show was another
great success. Congratulations to Jessica Muzzerall
and the team from the Calgary Marriott Hotel, who
won the Ambassador Limousine Luxurious Limo
Package.
What a day! The models all
looked stunning, the food
was wonderful, and
everyone had a great time.
Suzanne Fox from Global TV
was once again a charming
and gracious MC.
When we recognized our outstanding members at the Chapter
meeting last December, our nominee for Executive of the Year
was unable to attend.
Peter MacHardy did to attend the April meeting so we were
able to present his award in front of a record number of
attendees. Peter MacHardy is an Executive with GWL Realty
Advisors. He was recognized for his ongoing support for EWI
Calgary over the last five years, both financially and for the
member representative, Jackie Pontin. Peter has always
encouraged leadership roles among his staff, and has
supported Jackie’s involvement for years. He is a very active
member of the community serving on various boards. A
tireless fundraiser for various charities, Peter infects all
those around him with his generous spirit. When his
colleagues had him arrested as part of the Cancer Society’s
annual “Jail ‘n Bail” although his bail was set at $5,000 he
refused to leave the jail until he had raised over $12,600 in
pledges! He was the first in the company to volunteer to have
his head shaved for United Way and bullied five of his
colleagues into joining him.
As Jackie said, “Peter always sees the possibilities in people
and gives them the opportunity to realize their potential.”
Lorraine Swayze, Calgary Chapter President presented the
award to Peter.
Danine Birkholm was
the lucky winner of the
Golf Package. Danine
accepted her prize
from Lynn MacMullinCudmore and Carolyn
Powers.
The models were each
escorted onto the
stage by two of
Calgary’s finest.

COMPANY HIGHLIGHT
Discovery House
Member Representative, Marla Ferg
Discovery House – Shelter, Hope and Education
Discovery House has been providing Shelter, Hope and Education to courageous women and children fleeing domestic
violence for over 30 years.
Domestic violence has an enormous impact on emotional, physical, financial, and psychological well-being. The longterm impacts of domestic violence include:
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
poor physical health and a chronically depressed immune system
compromised mental health, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, low self-esteem
behavioural problems and developmental delays
difficulty obtaining and maintaining employment and housing
substance abuse
diminished parenting skills
poor school performance
the increased likelihood of criminal and juvenile justice system involvement and Child Protective Services
interventions
difficulties in forming healthy relationships
Our mission is to provide integrated residential and community services for abused women with children to enable
them to live safely in the community. To meet this mission, Discovery House provides services to women and children
through two primary programs: 1) the Residential program provides counselling and support services within our 19apartment shelter where families stay for an average stay of five months, and 2) the Community Housing program
(CHP) provides access to stable housing, counselling and support services in the community to women and children
who are dually impacted by violence and homelessness.
Both the residential program staff and the CHP staff work as a holistic team in a consultative and integrated manner,
wrapping a package of services around each client, even the youngest child. Our services include counselling, safety
planning, advocacy, life skills education, case management & planning, systems navigation, referrals, and community
connections.
We know that the work we do is a contributing factor in our clients’ success and healthy integration in the community.
Our outcomes reports show that our adult clients are maintaining stable housing (85%) and are not returning to an
abusive relationship 94%), and our child and youth clients are moving through developmental milestones at an age
appropriate rate (92%).
Our work improves life outcomes for families who have unique social development needs including physical, emotional,
economic and social pressures compounded by family violence, poverty, illiteracy and vulnerability. But we couldn’t do
it without the support we receive from our friends and partners in the community like EWI. Together we are addressing
these families’ most basic and immediate needs and building stronger, healthier, and more stable communities.
Sandra says it best – “When I left my home I was bruised, battered, and smashed into unrecognizable shards of glass
which seemed impossible to mend. Walking through the doors of Discovery House I was afraid and uncertain. But
taking those first steps gave me peace of mind, and for the first time in many years, I felt safe and protected from the
violence of my past relationship.”
“Discovery House is the perfect name for my past residence because it is the place I discovered several amazing things
about myself, my life, and my future. It was the foundation for my recovery. I gained my confidence back and I found
my voice again.”

MEMBER TESTIMONIALS
“I have personally been involved in EWI for almost eight years in a variety of roles and I cannot express fully how the
experience has enriched my life. Working with this dynamic group of ladies has given me faith in the power of women and
that dreams can become reality. Membership has rewarded me with many new long term friendships and business partners,
many from all over North America. If you are going to join, be prepared to have fun, push and develop your inner strengths
and know you have a sisterhood behind you in life”!
Karen Skirten, CTC
Independent Consultant
TierOne Travel
“I originally came to EWI as a representative for Canada Post. Little did I know how much a part of my life EWI would
become! At the touch of a keyboard or picking up the phone and contacting an EWI member, I can get any information I
need for my job, ranging from where to get the best promo items for my company to locating an event planner for a
conference. Most of the time they can provide to me exactly what I need and if they don’t have the answer they can guide me
in the correct direction. Not only has EWI assisted me in my professional life, but enabled me to make life long friendships.”
Cheyne Parkinson
C.P. Consulting
“EWI has allowed me to grow on a professional level and I credit my involvement with enabling me to qualify for a position
of greater responsibility within my comany. I appreciate all the professional development opportunities and look forward to
attending the monthly meetings, with such a diversity of speakers. I have made some lasting friendships and built an
amazing network of contacts.”

Is your gym bag sweaty, dirty, germy, with odd smells coming from it? If
you don’t even know what kind of mess has been collecting in there all
year cause you don’t frequently clean it out, here are a few tips and
tricks for making sure that your gym bag is ready for the soccer,
baseball, or football season.
The best way to start is to take everything out of your gym bag,
including what is in the pockets (inside and out). If there is a removable
piece on the bottom of the bag remove this as well. Throw it in the wash
with a load of old towels or soak it in your bathtub or sink. Let the gym
bag air dry by putting it on a flat surface, such as on a table (with a
towel underneath the gym bag) or on top of a dryer.
Once it’s dried, wipe it down with an antibacterial wipe including the
handles, the bottom, and everywhere in between. The plastic pieces can
hold germs, sanitizing it can definitely help. Leave a pack of
antibacterial wipes in your gym bag, and maybe an air freshener.
Tips to keeping your bag from smelling:
·
·
·
Leave a pack of antibacterial wipes in your gym bag, give it a wipe
every once in a while.
Leaving an air freshener in the bag is not a bad idea.
Sprinkling a little baking soda in your shoes after every use will
help keep the smells away.
