adidas: The
Leading Supporter
of Player
Development
2
adidas is the leading soccer brand in the
world. It is easy to recognize adidas’ international stature through its association with
the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions
League, the UEFA European Championship,
and top national teams, professional clubs,
and players.
In the United States adidas supports the
highest level of the game through its comprehensive support of Major League Soccer.
In addition, adidas is very active at the
collegiate level where six of the last seven
NCAA Division I men’s champions chose to
wear adidas.
Equally important are adidas’ contributions to the grassroots levels of soccer. The
cornerstone of this commitment to youth
player development is adidas’ sponsorship
of US Youth Soccer, which includes the
Olympic Development Program, National
Championships Series, coaching licenses,
and TOP Soccer for players with physical
and mental challenges. In addition, adidas
sponsors the best youth competitions in
the nation, including the Disney Showcase,
adidas Final Four Showcases, Blue Chip
Showcases, and the USA Cup.
adidas also promotes the development
of individual player skills through Coerver
Coaching as well as coaching education
through sponsorship of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Not
surprisingly, adidas is also very active with
youth clubs throughout the country.
The adidas Elite Soccer Program 2006, a
US Youth Soccer ODP sanctioned event, is a
highlight on adidas’ player development calendar. It is one of the numerous efforts that
make adidas the leading supporter of player
development in the United States.
1. Why did adidas create
adidas ESP?
adidas is committed to player
development. In 1997, when
adidas started the Elite Soccer
Program, there was no other
program available that brought
together the best male youth
players to learn, train, and
compete against each other.
Today, adidas ESP remains a
unique opportunity for the
top players to further develop their
skills and also be recognized for their
achievements. The players are provided
with first class facilities, equipment,
and coaching within a high-level
training and game environment. The
players also receive classroom experiences to further help them grow.
2. How are the 136 players for
adidas ESP 2006 players selected?
The selection process involves a network of over 40 experienced coaches
nationwide who work year round
scouting league games, tournaments,
state cups, and regional and national
championships. Once players have
been scouted, nominated, and selected, they are invited to participate.
On average approximately 80% of the
players invited will have been involved
in the US Youth Soccer ODP system,
while about 20% of the players will be
identified from other competitive situations. Most of the players invited will be
graduating in 2007 but there will also be
exceptional younger players selected.
3. What distinguishes adidas ESP
from other programs?
The quality of the coaching staff,
the quality of the curriculum, the quality of the players and the quality of the
facility distinguish adidas ESP above all
other programs. The first evening the
players will be assigned to teams comprised of 2 goalkeepers, 15 field players,
and a staff coach. Over the next five
days the players will be challenged to
demonstrate their individual skills as
well as contribute to their team’s success. adidas brings in top clinicians to
work with the players. For instance,
Robin Fraser, former US national team
and MLS star, youth coaches from
Chelsea FC, Major League Soccer, and
Athletes’ Performance, performance
fitness specialists who work with the
German national team as well as the
Los Angeles Galaxy and CD Chivas
USA, will provide sessions. After two
days of training, competitive games begin. One game per day will be played
to showcase each player’s abilities and
to determine the team champion of
adidas ESP 2006. The players who play
the best will be selected to compete in
the adidas ESP 2006 All Star Game.
4. What other developmental opportunities are available at adidas
ESP 2006?
adidas has invited Dr. Greg Dale,
from Duke University, to enhance
the players’ perspectives on "Team
Building" and "Maintaining Focus",
Athletes’ Performance to develop personal performance fitness plans for the
players, and Alfonso Mondelo, head
of the youth division of Major League
Soccer, to share the expectations for
top youth players.
5. How many college coaches
will be attending the adidas ESP
camp?
About 120 college coaches as well
as some professional scouts. adidas is
very appreciative of the coaches who
will come to watch the adidas ESP
2006 players. Consequently, adidas
will provide the attending coaches
with: a Player Profile Book, which
includes biographical and contact
information on each player; special
seminars on relevant coaching topics;
on site hospitality during all training
sessions and games; and an off site reception and viewing of the 2006 FIFA
World Cup Final.
adidas ESP Alumni
The Alumni of adidas ESP have gone to
on to great success at both the collegiate
and professional levels of soccer.
Some exceptionally talented adidas ESP
alumni have gone directly to the professional ranks. Such players include Josmer
Altidore (Generation adidas ‘06 - Red Bull
New York), Nikolas Besagno (Generation
adidas ‘05 - Real Salt Lake), Jonathan
Spector (Manchester United) and DaMarcus
Beasley (PSV Eindhoven).
Other adidas ESP alumni have had
exemplary college careers and then become
top professionals. For instance, three of the
last four winners of the Hermann Trophy,
given to the best college player of the year,
are adidas ESP alumni, and three out of the
last five number one draft picks in the MLS
Super Draft are adidas ESP alumni.
While many adidas ESP alumni decide
to attend major college soccer powers, it
is noteworthy that adidas alumni have attended over 120 different colleges.
