(General Comm. 16th Feb. 1922 to 12th Jan. 1927), born on
28th March, 1869, vested on 4th Jan., 1887, Ordained on 11th
Oct., 1891, made Titular Bishop of Gaza and Vicar Apostolic
of Arabia on 28th Oct., 1937, died in Florence on 27th Jan.,
1949.

Prefect Apostolic of Jammu-Kashmir on 28th December,
1978. He was appointed Bishop of Jammu-Srinagar on April
5, 1986 and died on 8th August 2008 at Bharananganam.

to 17th October, 1979), born on 15th May, 1928, vested on
12th May, 1953, ordained on 25th March, 1960, nominated
Definitor General on 17th October, 1979 and was elected
Definitor General at the 79th General Chapter of 1982. Died
in Thrissur on 8th August, 1988.

Landmarks in the History of
Indian Capuchins
1. Early Attempts:
1632
A team of six French Capuchins arrived at
Pondichery, Tamil Nadu. Their mission was an
extension of the Capuchin Mission in Syria.
1639 Mar 1
A batch of four French Capuchins from Syria
started their Mission in Surat.
1642
At the official invitation of the Governor of the
Fort, Br. Ephrem arrived in Madras, from Surat
to start a Mission.
1745 Apr 20
Bros. Joseph of Ascoli and Francis Mary of
Tours, left Tibetan Mission for Nepal, as they
were forced out by the Buddhist Priests.
1769
These Capuchins again were forced to leave
Nepal, and they founded bases in Bettiah, Patna
and Chandernagore in North India.
1845
The Mission of Agra, was divided into two
Vicariates, that of Agra and Patna. Br. Anastasius
Hartmann was the first Apostolic Vicar of Patna.
1850
Mgr. Hartmann, the Apostolic Vicar of Patna was
called upon to take up the administration of the
Vicariate of Bombay.

The Novitiate was shifted to Monte Mariano,
Farangipet, in the diocese of Mangalore.

A study house was set up at Kollam, Kerala,
and most of the students who had not yet finished
their studies abroad, were brought back to
continue their studies there.
1938 Oct. 21
The Indian unit of the Order was raised to the
status of a General Commissariate and Br. Guido
(Le Flosch) of Pontieux of the Province of Paris
was the Commissary General.
1942
The Assisi Friary at Aluva, was blessed on 28
April 1937. After five years of planting,
landscaping and furnishing, it was freely given
over to the Cloistered Poor Clares, Colletines,
who had to flee from Burma during World War
II.

3. The Status of Provincial Commissariate
1951 May 26
The Indian unit was declared a Provincial
Commissariate with Br. Richard of Durand of
Calvary Province (U.S.A.) as the Commissary
Provincial.

1954 June 6
Rome appointed Br. Cyril Andrade of Kallianpur
as the first Indian Provincial Commissary, to lead
the unit of the Order in India.
1956 May 20
The Agra Archdiocese was entrusted to the
Province and Br. Dominic Athaide was
consecrated the first Indian Capuchin
Archbishop.
1957 - 1963
Rome appointed Br. Cassian as the Provincial
Commissary of the Order in India
4. A Full-fledged Province:
1963 Apr 13
The formation of the autonomous Indian Province
namely, the Province of the Immaculate Heart
of Mary with the appointment of Br. Berchmans
Puthuparambil as the first Provincial Minister.
1966
The first elective Provincial Chapter was held
and Br. Berchumans Puthuparambil was
reelected as the Provincial Minister.

Br Jacob Acharuparambil elected as the
Provincial Minister of the Province of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary, India.

5. Division of the Indian Province

The decree of the division of the Province into
four different units, decided by the General

The division of the Indian Province into four
independent jurisdictions namely, St. Joseph
Province (Kerala), Holy Trinity Province
(Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra), Amala Annai
Province (Tamil Nadu) and St. Francis Vice
Province (Kerala) and the installation of the new
Provincial Superiors (appointed by Rome) at the
ordinary Chapter at Kotagiri by Very Rev. Br.
Aloysius Ward, Definitor General. Br. Hippolytus
Kunnunkal was appointed the first Provincial of
St. Joseph Province (Kerala).
1973 Feb 4-10
The Provincial Renewal Chapter of St. Joseph
Province (Kerala), at Assisi Ashram,
Bharananganam.
1975 Feb. 23
The First Election Chapter of St. Joseph Province
(Kerala), was held at Assisi Ashram,
Bharananganam. Br. Hippolytus Kunnunkal was
re-elected Provincial.
1976 Dec 6-11
Extraordinary Provincial Chapter held at Assisi
Ashram, Bharananganam.
1978 Apr 9-15
In the Second Election Chapter of the Province
at Assisi Ashram, Bharananganam Br. Claude
Ollukaren was elected Provincial Minister.

Br. Hippolytus Kunnunkal was appointed Prefect
Apostolic of Jammu-Kashmir.
1979 Oct. 19
Br. Claude Ollukaren, the Provincial Minister,
was nominated Definitor General in the place of
Br. Jacob Acharuparambil who was appointed
the Bishop of Thiruvananthapuram on 13th Aug.,

The Holy See by a special decree Prot:69/83
declared St. Joseph Province as belonging
officially to Syro-Malabar Rite.1988, May 30:

Friars gathering at St. Francis Theological
College, Kottayam.
1989 Jan. 16-20 Extraordinary Provincial Chapter at St.

St. Joseph Province was divided into two units
i.e., St. Thomas Province, (comprising the
Archdioceses of Ernakulam and Thrissur and
the Dioceses of Palakkad and Irinjalakuda.)
and St. Joseph Province (comprising the
Archdioceses of Changanassery and
Thalassery and the Dioceses of Pala,
Kanjirappilly, Kottayam, Kothamangalam,
Mananthavady and Thamarassery). Br.
Francis Christi Vattakuzhy was appointed the
first Provincial and Br. Justinian Cherupallikat,

A Short History of the Houses
01. Calvary Ashram, Thrissur
(1954 – Thrissur Archdiocese)
It was Bishop George Alappat who invited us and gave us
permission to open a house at Thrissur. The plot of land for the
Ashram was given to us by Chev. Injodikaran Iyyappan at a very
nominal price and he also helped us substantially towards the
construction of our Chapel.
The foundation stone of the chapel was laid on 27th Feb., 1955
and on 14th Sept., 1958 the chapel was blessed and the altar
consecrated by His Excellency George Alappat. The friary and
the chapel were built by Br. Athanasius and Br. Gerard. Br. Gilbert,
Br. Samuel, Br. Jeremias, Br. Cosmos and Br. Thomas Kalappura
were the other members who joined them.
In 1961, the friary was constituted a study house of Philosophy.
To house the students, a large extension was put up by Br. Gerard
and it was blessed on 31st May, 1961. From then on it was the
house of Philosophy and in 1972 it was declared one of the common
study houses (Philosophy) of the four Indian Jurisdictions.
It ceased to be a common study house of the Indian
Jurisdictions from the scholastic year 1981 – 1982. From 1st July,
1981 it started functioning as the combined Philosophate and
Theologate of St. Joseph Province, Kerala. But Theology was later
shifted to St. Francis Theological College, Thellakom, Kottayam in
1986.
With the bifurcation of St. Joseph Province into two in 1999,
the administration and management of Calvary Philosophical College

fell into the hands of St. Thomas Province, Kerala. However it
continues to be serving the three jurisdictions of the Syro-Malabar
Rite provinces in Kerala, imparting Phiolosophical training to thier
students.
As the number of students increased we constructed a new
wing in the first floor of students’ block with 26 rooms and it was
blessed in 1996. The two guest rooms and the counseling rooms
near parlor were built in the year of 2003. With the financial support
from General Economical Solidarity we built a new library and
reference section in the year 2007.
In the place of old kitchen and baking area we built a new
kitchen and adjacent to that 5 rooms for friars and 10 rooms for
students in the first floor in the year 2010. The newly constructed
refectory and choir was blessed in the year 2014.

02. Nazareth Ashram, Aluva
(1960 – Ernakulam Archdiocese)
Our present house is the second Capuchin foundation in Aluva.
The first one, called Assisi Friary, which was solemnly blessed on
28 April, 1937, was freely given over to the cloistered Poor Clares
in 1942 when they had to flee from Burma during the World War
II.
Nazareth Ashram was started by Br. Ignatius and was built
by him. His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Parekattil graciously invited
us and gave permission to start a house in the Archdiocese. Aluva
was found suitable for a friary and the present plot of land was
donated by late Dr. P.J. Thomas. Br. Ignatius, Br. Julian and Br.

Donatus were the first friars at Aluva and they worked tirelessly
to put up the building. The foundation stone of the chapel was
blessed on 30th Aug., 1962. The house was made the Provincialate
in 1972. But in July, 1977 the Provincialate was transferred to the
adjacent Ashram. Again from October 25, 1999, to April 15,2002,
it functioned as the Provincialate of St. Thomas Capuchin Province.
In the year 2013, a major portion of ashram was renovated.
In 2012 Nazareth Ashram celebrated its Golden Jubilee.

03. Bethlehem Ashram, Elinjipra
(1963 – Irinjalakuda Diocese)
The site of Bethlehem Ashram was donated to us by the late
Rev.Fr. John Kizhakooden. An adjoining plot was donated by Mr.
Joseph Plackal, father of Br. Paul Dayanand OFM Cap. The
foundation stone of the chapel was laid on 13th August, 1962. Br.
Gerard who was then the Guardian of Calvary Ashram, Thrissur
was asigned with the responsibility of building the chapel at Elinjipra.
He worked very hard to build the chapel and it was completed and
blessed on 13th May, 1963. Br. Gerard was succeeded by Br.
Renatus who, in turn was succeeded by Br. Henry. The latter built
an extension to the old building, and was looking after the chapel
and ashram for some time. The present ashram building was built
by Br. Athanasius and it was blessed on 1st May, 1971. A new
block was added to it in the year 1993.
On 6 December 1997 Fr Mathew Paikada OFM Cap (the
Provincial) placed a request for the formation of a parish. On
September 8, 1998 with the official approval (807/98) from Bishop's
Curia (Irinjalakuda) St Francis Assisi Parish was formed at
Behtlehem (Elinjipra) and the Friary Chapel was used as the Parish

church. Fr Antony Manjiyil OFM Cap was the first Parish
Priest.With the establishment of St. Thomas Province the Minor
Seminary was officially inaugurated at Dhynashram, Mupliyam,
but later it was shifted to Bethlehem on 3 July 2000. The foundation
stone of the newly built Chapel was laid by Bishop Mar James
Pazhayatil on 18 June 2007, and the magnificent work of
construction was carried out by Fr Paul Madassery OFM Cap and
it was blessed on 1 March 2008 by Bishop Mar Pauly Kanookadan.
On 20 January 2013 Golden Jubilee of the Capuchin presence at
Elinjipra was celebrated.

04. St. Thomas Capuchin Provincialate, Aluva
(1977 – Ernakulam Archdiocese)
The suggestion for a separate Provincialate was approved by
the Election Chapter of 1975. Though a plot of land adjacent to
Nazareth Ashram was bought for the purpose, it was not found
very convenient. Hence, with the approval of the Extraordinary
Chapter of 1976, another plot in Aluva was bought in 1977. All the
arrangements for the purchase of the new plot was made by Br.
Ignatius.
On 3rd July, 1977, the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle, the
Provincialate was shifted from Nazareth Ashram to the new place.
The formal inauguration and blessing of the new Provincialate
was done by His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Parekattil, Archbishop
of Ernakulam, on 1st October, 1977, and it was then canonically
erected into an ashram. It served as the Provincialate of St. Joseph
Province till the bifurcation. When on October 25, 1999 the two
new provinces, St.Joseph and St. Thomas came to be, the

povincialate belonged to St. Thomas Province; but till April 15,
2002, it was used as the Provincialate of St. Joseph Province,
Kerala. In the year 2000 we built a new block and we named it
'Padre Pio block'. On April 15, 2002, the provincialate of St. Thomas
Province was shifted from Nazareth Ashram to St. Thomas
Capuchin Provincialate. In 2005 we constructed another block
adjacent to 'Padre Pio'. Later in 2010 we constructed a second
floor with a few living rooms. A partial help we received from
General Curia for the Construction. Occasionally this Pax center
is used for conducting retreats for religious. In 2008 a portion of
museum was converted into chapter hall.

05. Sinai Capuchin Ashram, Palakkad
(1987 - Diocese of Palakkad)
The Chapter of 1987 had decided to open a house in the
diocese of Palakkad. A 2.53 acre of land was purchased near
Palakkad town at Pattikara, with the intention of starting a house.
Br. Gerard was deputed to build the new Ashram. On inquiry it
was found that the land was not suitable for the construction of an
Ashram. Therefore, another plot of land was purchased in Mundur
near Palakkad, and a modest building was put up on the new site
under the leadership of Br. Gerard. It was blessed by Mar. Joseph
Irumpen, the Bishop of Palakkad, on February 5, 1991.
The Renewal Centre attached to Sinai Ashram has become
one of the best apostolic activities of our province in the diocese of
Palakkad. Br. Paul Adambukulam is to be appreciated for his
initiative and hardwork. Br. Francis Neelankavil had started some
preliminary work in the town property at Pattikara between 1993
– 1996. In 1999, after the establishment of the St. Thomas Province,

the Provincial Definitory entrusted the construction work to Br.
Francis Edattukaran. A substantial help was received from the
Swiss Province for the building.
A two storeyed beautiful multi-purpose building-Capuchin
Sevanalayam-was inaugurated by our Br. General and blessed by
His Excellency Mar Jacob Manathodathu, Bishop of Palakkad, on
April 4, 2002. From the year 2002 to 2008 this building was used
as a center for 'Akashaparavakal'. In 2008 it was shifted to
Gagultha at Kurumal. Presently it serves as the home for the boys
from the poor family.

06. Sahrudaya Bhavan, Kaipamangalam Beach
(1987- Irinjalakuda Diocese)
Brs. Francis Ponnumpurayidom and Jos Peter Ponnor started
Sahrudaya Bhavan in 1987 as a Presence, with the permission of
the then Provincial Br. Stephen Jairaj. The house started functioning
in a temporary building in the land owned by Mr. Narayanan Pallath.
Later in 1996 it was shifted to the adjacent plot of land (12.5 cents)
bought for the purpose by Mr. Jose Alukkas. A multi purpose hall
in the plot was blessed by His Excellency Mar James Pazhayattil,
Bishop of Irinjalakuda on July 21, 1996. Later in 1998, Mr. Antoo
Alukkas helped to buy another plot of land (38 cents) just nearby
for the purpose of social work and both the plots were handed
over to the Province.
Two plots at Kaipamangalam Beach which were used for the
social works and for a multi-purpose hall were given off. The later
one was sold to the Parish Church on 23 February 2011. The Parish
has built a beautiful little chapel on this plot. Now we have a small

house in the remaining plot of land there. At present there is no
regular presence there, but only a weekly visit and a Mass for the
faithful there.

07. Dhyanashram, Mupliyam
(1993 – Irinjalakkuda Diocese)
The sixth Election Chapter of March 1990 had endorsed and
passed the suggestion of starting a hermitage according to the rule
of St. Francis. Br. Francis Alappatt, the originator and proponent
of the idea, was deputed to execute this project. A plot of land was
purchased at Vellarampadam, Mupliyam, in the diocese of
Irinjalakuda, and a building was erected there under the supervision
of Br. Francis Alapatt. It was blessed by Br. Thomas Jacob
Thekkumkattil, Provincial Minister on 23rd May, 1993.The request
of Br. Francis Alapatt for a chapel attached to Dhyanasharam was
sanctioned and the foundation stone was blessed by Br. Provincial
on 6 th April 1995. The completed chapel was blessed and
inaugurated by His Excellency Mar James Pazhayattil, Bishop of
Irinjalakuda, on 18th August 1996. A new block on the 1st floor
was constructed with the help received from Swiz Capuchin
Province. It was blessed on 31 July 2013 by Mar Pauly
Kanookadan, Bishop of Irinjalakuda.

08. Shanti Ashram, Perumbavoor
(1996 – Ernakulam - Angamaly Archdiocese)
The Provincial Chapter of 1987 had decided to erect a
provincial infirmary to cater to the needs of the old and sick friars.
A plot of land consisting of 80 cents was purchased at Perumbavoor
for the purpose. Br. Jacob Kurisinkal was deputed to build the
Ashram. The house was blessed by Most Rev. Br. John Corriveau,

our Minister General, on May 12 1996. In 2005 we constructed an
upper section for the purpose of men's hostel for the nursing
students. Later due to certain reasons we stopped giving
accommodation for them.

09. San Damiano, Kurumal
(1995 – Thrissur Archdiocese)
The Provincial chapter of 1993 decided to open an ashram in
the Archdiocese of Thrissur. Br. Jose Pullokaran was deputed to
find a suitable site for the Friary. On 21 December 1994 a land of
5 acres belonging to two families, was purchased and registered in
the name of the province. Mar Joseph Kundukulam of happy
memory, gave oral permission to start a Friary in his diocese. On
14th June 1997 the new fraternity of San Damiano was constituted
and the foundation stone was laid for the new ashram.
When Bishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy became the Archbishop
of Thrissur he proposed to take up a parish along with the ashram.
After the necessary negotiations with the Archdiocese Parish was
taken up. On 3 rd May, 1998, celebration of Sunday mass for the
people began; Mass for the people began; on 24th January, 1999 it
was declared a quasi-parish.
On 10th June, 1999 His Grace Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, the
Archbishop of Thrissur solemnly made it a full-fledged parish, and
appointed Br. Jose Pullokaran the first Parish Priest of St. George
Church, Kurumal. In 2008 with the permission from the local
ordinary Mar Andrews Thazhath we started a retreat center and
'Akashaparavakal'. In 2014 we blessed the newly constructed
retreat center.

10. Assisi Bhavan, Konnakuzhy
( 2005 – Irinjalakuda Diocese)
Assisi Bhavan, Konnakuzhy, in the diocese of Irinjalakuda, is
situated on the banks of Athirappilly River. The experimental
community started to function as our new presence on 15
December 2005. As per the decision of Extra-Ordinary Chapter
2012 we renovated the three existing cottages and made it
conducive for personal retreat and prayer days.

11. Assisi Gramashram, Narassimuku, Attapady
(2006 – Palakkad Diocese)
A plot of ten acres at Narassimuku, Attapady has been
purchased in view of developing an inter-Franciscan centre with
openness for a ministry to the tribals. Although in 2006 we started
this as a simple presence, it was canonically erected in 2012. In
the year 2009 we constructed a small block with two living rooms.
Later in 2012 we renovated the existing chapel and dining room.

12. San Joe Capuchin Ashram, Thalapara
(2007 - Ernakulam - Angamaly Archdiocese)
On 11th of July, 2007 a new Capuchin House, named San
Joe Capuchin Ashram at Thalapara in the Archdiocese of
Ernakulam - Angamaly was blessed an inaguarated by His
Excellency Mar Thomas Chakiath, the Auxiliary Bishop
Ernakulam - Angamaly Archdiocese. This Ashram at the Southern
end of the Archdiocese, where we did not have a Capuchin

presence, has already become very much involved in the pastoral
care of the people.
13. St. Francis Ashram, Wadakkanchery
(2011 - Palakkad Diocese)
In our Province election Chapter 2011, S.F.O of Trichur
Archdiocese requested us to take over the property and ministry
at Wadakkanchery which was being carried out by A.R.C.
After several sessions of discussions and consultation finally
we decided to take up this with 99 years of lease arrangement.
To execute this we reconstituted ARC. To make our presence
more effective we formed a fraternity, St. Francis Ashram, at
Wadakanchery. As part of our Ministry we have proposed two
projects. One is a De-addiction Centre and the other is
Rehabilitation of AIDS Patients.

14. San Pio Ashram, Chittady
(2013 - Palakkad Diocese)
St. Pio Ashram is our 3rd presence in the diocese of
Palakkat. In order to strengthen our presence and ministry in
Palakkat Diocese, the Definitory decided to construct a House
at Chittady in the plot we received as donation from Mr. Jose
Manjyil, Aranattukara, to whom we owe a depth of gratitude.
A fraternity, San Pio Ashram, was formed in a temporary
residence built at Chittady and it was blessed on 28th Feb.

SHORT HISTORY OF THE HOUSES OF MALAWI CUSTODY
By a formal letter of Br. General Minister, Malawi mission was
entrusted to the undivided St. Joseph Province on January 13, 1987.
The first batch of missionaries in the persons of Brs. Hugoline
Mathews, Abel and Francis Paliekara arrived in Malawi in 1988 and
for a few months they stayed in a parish called Nsipe, run by the
White Fathers where they spent time in studying the language
(Chichewa) and getting acquainted with the people and their culture.
Then they moved to Mikoke, an outstation of Nsipe, where our first
friary was built in 1989. When the Province was bifurcated, Malawi
Mission was entrusted to St. Thomas Province. From 2002 to 2006,
Br. Isaac Puthur served as Mission Delegate. Br. Jos Ponnor
succeeded him in 2006 and continued in the office till 2011.
Br. John Kolencherry was appointed as Mission Delegate in 2011.
On 15th of February 2014, our Mission in Malawi was raised
to the status of Custody in the presence of our dear Br. General.
With its declaration as Custody, our Mission gets a new team of
animators. Br. Laiju Kilukkan, Superior Regular, Br. Gratian
Chittilapilly and Br. Sijo Varghese Pynadath are the councilors.
1. St. Francis Friary, Mikoke
As per the request from Rt Rev. Chizendera, the Bishop of Dedza,
our first Missionaries landed in the ‘warm heart of Africa’ on 28th
September. On 7th December these friars started their pastoral
experience in Nsipe, Ntchew and Mzama parishes which were run by
the White Fathers.
1988- The new seminary building was blessed on 11th August,
the feast day of St. Clare, by Rt Rev. Remie Ste Marie, the Bishop of
Dedza. This seminary building is a living testimony of the hard and

dedicated work of our Friars Varghese Pulikiyil and Martinian
Jnarackal. 1989- With the hard work and dedication the pioneering
friars the first Capuchin foundation became a reality on 15th December
with the opening of the new house, St. Francis Friary at Mikoke.
St Francis Parish at Mikoke with 14 outstations was canonically
erected on 17 December. 1997- The new Church for the parish was
built with help from Economic Solidarity. It was blessed on 18th October
by bishop Chisendera. On August 15 we officially began Postulancy
at Mikoke with four young men. The first Rector was Fr. Abel
Thekekutt.
2. St. Andrew Kaggwa Friary, Lilongwe
The foundation at Lilongwe (Area 49) became the second
foundation of the Indian Capuchins in Malawi. The Kaggwa Parish,
which is the backbone of our Custody, is one of the best parishes in
Malawi. The parish consists of 9 outstations. The parish is also running
a secondary school. We gratefully remember the contribution of Br.
Francis Paliakara who took initiative to found this parish. With the
help of CMC sisters our missionaries are doing a wonderful social
work in the field of education and Home-based-care for HIV patients.
Besides this we procured 20 acres of land for the retreat house and
for other social work. The secondary school which is run by the mission
is one of the best schools in Lilongwe.
3. St. Padre Pio Friary, Mzuzu
2001 January Bishop of Mzuzu, Rt. Rev. Joseph M. Zuza met then
provincial Rev. Fr. Francis Christi Vattakuzhy at Lilongwe and
welcomed officially to open the mission in his diocese.
April 5th Fr. John Kolencherry was sent to the diocese to learn
the language and be acquainted with the culture and the new

situation of the diocese. He was also commissioned to find a
suitable place for Capuchins to implant the Order in Mzuzu
Diocese. Accordingly in consultation with the Bishop, Br. John
found “Lusangazi” as a suitable place for our presence. The
Capuchin Mission Trust has 60 acres of land on lease.
2003 April 5th Fr. Davis Thottappilly joined and they both formed a
community. Bishop had provided a temporary house at Katoto
to stay until own building be ready at Lusangazi. On September
03 guest house and in November the priest house started to be
constructed. On 2nd December we started a maize mill.
2004 April 12 the Brs. John & Davis moved to Lusangazi for the
permanent stay. In the following week they began daily mass
for the faithful began to be celebrated in a temporary shed.
There were about 25 to 50 daily participants for the Mass.
Electricity and Telephone services were availed in April.
On July 4th Bishop Rev. J. M. Zuza officially opened the new
Parish at Lusangazi, the heavenly patron being St. Padre Pio.
July 31st NRA granted the Road under the guidance of Mr.
Gondwe. Over 20,000 people are using this graded road. It was
because our presence that this road had been graded.
On September 23, the Feast day of St. Pio, the newly built
Capuchin house was blessed by Rev. J. M. Zuza (Mzuzu Bp). Fr.
Isaac Puthur, the Provincial Delegate read out the Message of Br.
General John Corriveau, Fr. Provincial David Francis gave a message
on the occasion. Fr. Justinian Mission Secretary of the province graced
the occasion by his valuable presence and Fr. John Kolencherry
thanked everyone.

4. St. Anthony Capuchin Formation House, Zomba
Bishop Thomas Luke Msusa (SMM) of the Diocese of Zomba
invited the capuchins to work in his diocese. In view of strengthening
and extending our presence in the Mission, we opened a friary at
Zomba. The intention of the house is to send our brothers to St. Peter’s
Major Seminary for their Theological studies. Accordingly Br. Francis
Christi then Provincial appointed Br. Cherian Maliyekkal as in charge
of the students, as well as to find a suitable place for a capuchin
foundation. The first batch students were Brs. Thomas Francis, Sherin
Cheranthuruthy and Bruno Dalitso Mbilizi, staying in house near the
Cathedral Church (Bishop’s quarters). From there they attended the
major seminary.
2011- On 7 June a plot of land was purchased at Zomba, near
to St. Peter’s Major Seminary. The construction of the Theological
study house started on 01 February 2012 under the supervision of Br.
Laiju Kilukkan.

The main purpose of having the Theological formation in Malawi
is to provide an opportunity for the Indian students to learn the culture
and local language better and for the Malawian students to have more
exposure to pastoral ministry.
5. Laverna Friary, Gullivar
The idea of commencing a boarding for the secondary school
students who wanted to join in the Capuchin Order was one of our
dreams.
2001 Br. Davis Elavuthingal made the initial paper works for buying
a land for boarding and for our Regional Administration building
at Gulliver in Lilongwe.
2007 Br. Jos Ponnor, then Provincial Delegate finalised the purchasing
of this land. He materialised the construction of the boarding
house with help from Economic Solidarity and his benefactors.
2001 The house was blessed on 22nd July by Provincial Raphie
Paliekara in the presence of Br. Pauly, Mission Secretary and
all the brothers of the Mission.
This hostel caters not only the Secondary School students who
wanted to join us but also the brothers who joined us but at the same
time who are not having sufficient grade (points) for their ecclesiastical
studies as prescribed by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi. In
addition to this at present this house also serves as temporary regional
house.
