Dear WNIT Supporters:
We can all take a deep breath now that the new episodes of Downton Abbey have premiered!
It seems “D.A.” was a frequent topic at the holiday parties I attended in December – there was
much anticipation for the new episodes. Thanks to all of you for your enthusiasm, viewership
and support of Michiana PBS, WNIT.
During December, we sent out a letter asking you to consider an end-of-year additional gift to
WNIT. Many of you responded. Thank you! This additional gift allowed us to purchase some
extra programming which you will soon see. One of those programs, Father Brown, is a series of
British mysteries based on the character created by novelist G.K. Chesterton. Look for our On
The Cover article in this edition of the WNIT Planner. Father Brown begins Thursday, March
19 at 8pm on WNIT.
March is a big month for some great additional programs to please regular viewers and attract
new ones. Although launched on February 28, My Music Presents: Motown 25 is a fun-fun
show that will put a smile on your face and a beat in your step. We have scheduled it a few times
during March. The Texas Tenors: You Should Dream special returns during the first part of the
month. They put on a great concert in Shipshewana last August and WNIT viewers had the
best seats. They will return to the area at Elkhart’s Lerner Theater on May 17, and we will have
prime seat tickets as well as a limited supply of passes to meet the Texas Tenors before the show.
Also, Michiana PBS, WNIT, will air the entire four part series The Italian Americans, Sunday,
March 15.
Sadly, cancer seems to touch every family. Ken Burns’ new documentary Cancer, The Emperor
of All Maladies comes to WNIT as a 3-part series on March 30-31 and April 1. This production
is a riveting historical documentary, an engrossing and intimate verity film, and a scientific and
investigative report. It is enthralling, emotional and important to see.
Finally, I want to call your attention to one particular documentary that is one in a series of
veteran-related documentaries you will see on Michiana PBS, WNIT, in the next year plus.
American Experience: Last Days in Vietnam airs Tuesday, April 28. I saw some early clips of this
program almost a year ago. It is very powerful.
I can’t seem to stop talking about all the great programming coming our way in the next few
months. Please take advantage of it! Thank you to everyone for your viewership and support.
All these good things happen because of you.
Sincerely,
Honorary Life Director
Carmi Murphy

Father Brown: Season 1
WNIT Public Television proudly presents FATHER BROWN starring
Mark Williams as the Catholic priest who also happens to have a
particular talent for solving crimes. Based on the short stories by G.K.
Chesterton, Father Brown follows this kindly cleric as he solves crimes in
his community. Many years spent hearing parishioners’ confessions have
given him an uncanny insight in to the origins of evil and the workings
of the criminal mind. Each episode sees the enigmatic priest investigate a
crime in his own particular way, using intuition and psychology.
This new series will air on ten consecutive Thursdays, March 19 – May
21 at 8pm on WNIT 34.1.
Episode 1 – The Hammer of God (March 19)
When an ungodly man is murdered at the
unveiling of a new church clock, Father Brown
must find the killer before an innocent woman is
sent to the gallows.
Episode 2 – The Flying Stars (March 26)
Father Brown becomes embroiled with a theatrical family when he discovers
that what had been thought of as a tragic drowning was actually murder.
Episode 3 – The Wrong Shape (April 2)
Soon after his poetry recital, Leonard Quinton is found hanging in
the conservatory. When Father Brown realizes that he could not have
committed suicide, the search begins for a murderer.
Episode 4 – The Man in the Tree (April 9)
When Lady Felicia finds a stripped and injured man stuck up a tree, Sid
is implicated as the perpetrator. Can Father Brown prove his innocence, or
has Sid gone too far this time?
Episode 5 – The Eye of Apollo (April 16)
When the Church of Apollo comes to Kembleford, Susie is drawn to their
charismatic leader Kalon. After Kalon’s wife is murdered, Father Brown
must break his spell over Susie or risk losing her forever.
Episode 6 – The Bride of Christ (April 23)
When two nuns die in mysterious circumstances at St.
Agnes convent, Father Brown investigates with the
aid of Sister Boniface, an eager young fan of detective
novels.

goes missing overnight. But just who is responsible for her disappearance?
Episode 8 – The Face of Death (May 7)

falls upon a bereaved man who wants revenge. However, Father Brown is
determined to prove the man’s innocence.

Brown deduces that he was deliberately electrocuted. Meanwhile, Mrs.
McCarthy’s past comes back to haunt her.

March 2015 Spring
Membership Campaign
WNIT’s Spring Membership Campaign begins Friday, February
27 and runs through Sunday, March 15. Our on-air Membership
Campaigns remain the most effective way of encouraging viewers
to join the WNIT family of supporters. While these drives
represent less than two percent of our annual broadcast hours,
they do provide WNIT with the majority of revenue required
to purchase and produce the regular and local programming
enjoyed by everyone throughout northern Indiana and
southwestern Michigan.
So get ready to experience an interesting and informative line-up
of special programs for the entire family. And be sure to tell your
family and friends why you think supporting WNIT is important.
It’s Viewers Like You who make a real difference to everyone in
our community.
Thank you for supporting WNIT!
WNIT eNews
The WNIT eNewsletter is a great way to stay on top of all the

any email communication from WNIT, you can let us know that
by email as well. Just send us your name and address and we will

In Memoriam
James N. Bieneman
Jane Warner
WNIT would like to honor the memory of James N. Bieneman,
who passed on January 31, 2015. Jim was very supportive
of the WNIT Directors’ Circle and a great family man and
friend. He was a lifelong summer resident on Diamond Lake in
Cassopolis, MI and a man of many interests including sailing,
hiking, competitive squash, golf and biking. WNIT extends its
condolences to the family and is honored to have known Jim and
benefitted from his support.
WNIT was saddened at the passing of founding board member
Jane (Mrs. E. Blair) Warner. Jane worked tirelessly to help
establish WNIT Public Television and her spirit of creativity,
energy and great fun helped make WNIT the station it is today.
We are grateful for all she did over 40 years ago to launch public
television in Michiana, and for the lasting effects her legacy will
continue to have on this station and the Michiana community.
WNIT extends its deepest condolences to the entire Warner
family and its most sincere thanks for all she has done.
Dr. Dane Miller
WNIT lost a great friend, supporter and advocate for Public
Television with the passing of Dr. Dane Miller on February 10,
2015. Throughout the years Dr. Dane and Mary Louise have been
instrumental in making WNIT what it is today. WNIT sends its
deepest condolences to Mary Louise and the entire Miller family.
We are honored to have known him and felt the love, support and
generosity that he provided this station and community for many,
many years.

Last Days in Vietnam
During the chaotic final days of the American involvement in the
Vietnam War, as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon,
South Vietnamese resistance crumbled. City after city and village after
village fell to the North while the U.S. diplomats and military operatives still in the country contemplated withdrawal. With the lives of
thousands of South Vietnamese hanging in the balance, those in control faced an impossible decision—who would go and who would be
left behind to face brutality, imprisonment, or even death. At the risk
of their careers and possible court-martial, a handful of individuals
took matters into their own hands. Engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations, they waged a desperate effort to evacuate as
many South Vietnamese as possible.
Last Days in Vietnam premieres Tuesday, April 28th at 9pm
on WNIT.
New Ken Burns Film,
Cancer: The Emperor
of All Maladies
to Air March 30-April 1
Cancer: The Emperor Of All Maladies tells the comprehensive story
of cancer, from its first description in an ancient Egyptian scroll to
the gleaming laboratories of modern research institutions. At six
hours, the film interweaves a sweeping historical narrative with intimate stories about contemporary patients, and an investigation into
the latest scientific breakthroughs that may have brought us, at long
last, within sight of lasting cures. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning
book The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D., this three-part major television event artfully
weaves three different films in one: a riveting historical documentary;
an engrossing and intimate vérité film; and a scientific and investigative report.
Watch Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies March 30April 1 on WNIT.
WNIT and the
University of Notre Dame
Form New Partnership!
WNIT is proud to announce a newly formed partnership with the
University of Notre Dame. New technology between both WNIT
and Notre Dame has allowed both entities the opportunity to share
and provide, between one another, new programs to Michiana area
residents. Greg Giczi, President & General Manager of WNIT said,
“WNIT is excited by this new interconnection between the University of Notre Dame and the WNIT Center for Public Media. This
fiber optic link and partnership with WNIT will allow the University
to extend its rich educational and cultural programs beyond a campus
auditorium to all of Michiana. As we take these initial small steps we
look forward to expanded offerings.”
If you would like to receive program updates and new information
on this partnership please send your email address to wnit@wnit.org.

Supporter
Spotlight
Michael Kubacki
This month, WNIT shines the Supporter Spotlight on Michael Kubacki, Lake City Bank
Executive Chairman and long-time Directors’ Circle member. Michael has shown his commitment
to WNIT with his generous contributions as well as having served on the WNIT Board of Directors and
opening up his home along with his wife, Rebecca, to other Directors’ Circle members for various events.
WNIT would also like to congratulate Michael on being named “Indiana Business Leader of the Year” by the Indiana
Chamber of Commerce. During his 16 years as CEO, Lake City Bank increased its assets from $800 million to $3.2 billion.
Kubacki led a team that expanded efforts beyond its home of Warsaw by establishing regional centers in South Bend, Fort
Wayne and Indianapolis. He also introduced a formalized training program called Lake City University.
WNIT proudly salutes Michael Kubacki for his sustained support of WNIT and congratulates him on his recent honor.
Directors’
Circle
The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their
commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget.
These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
