Hellenism, the Maccabees and the First War for Religious Freedom, Richard Townes
Alexander of Macedonia (the Great) became King at age 20 in 336 BC. Over the next 33 years he conquered an
empire that stretched from the eastern Mediterranean to India and changed history. Alexander the Great brought
Greek culture, religion, philosophy and commerce to the empire, yet when he died in 323 BC his empire was
divided between his generals. Their rivalry caused a conflict in the Holy Land between the Israelites who
wanted to be "Greek in all things" and those faithful to Judaism. This class will study the effect of that conflict
between the Jews of that time and the first war for religious freedom.

Book of Job, Rabbi Howard Hoffman
How do humans make sense of the evil in our world? What if you think that G-d watches your deeds and
rewards and punishes according to your behavior? What happens when you discover that the good suffer despite
their goodness? Would you curse G-d or insist on a showdown with the divinity?
This course will examine the Book of Job, one of the most daring books of the Bible. Job is a man who faces
these questions head on. We will look at the Bible's alternate theories of reward and punishment and then
confront Job's take on the relationship of G-d and his worshippers.
