The Hornell YMCA strives to meet the greater community needs, serving the whole person: spirit, mind and body, continually striving to put Christian principles into practice. AQUATICS POLICY Children ages 6 to 12 must have an adult (18+) with them in the pool area unless they are participating in a Y swim lesson. Children 5 years old and under must have an adult in the water with them unless they are participating in a Y swim lesson. CELL PHONE POLICY Members and program participants are not allowed to use their cell phones in the Fitness Center, Steiner Family Aquatics Center, locker rooms or during any art, fitness or music classes (other than for music). INSURANCE The Hornell Y strongly recommends that all members and program participants carry their own health insurance in case of accidental injury. The Hornell Y is not responsible for any claims caused by participation. OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS The Hornell Y does not allow anyone not employed by the Y to offer programs/services for YMCA members or program participants at the YMCA. SHOE POLICY All members and participants are to change into clean and dry sneakers before using the Y Fitness Center and Gymnasium or before participating in an aerobic or spin class. No outside shoes may be worn in the Steiner Family Aquatics Center. VALUABLES The Hornell YMCA is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Valuables may be kept at the Front Desk or left at home. Options for payment include cash, bank draft, check, MasterCard, Visa and Discover. 4 • Hornell YMCA Special Events Special Summer Events Camps 18th Annual Gus Macker 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament July 25-26 Gus Macker returns to take over Main Street in downtown Hornell Age groups for the tournament start at 10 and under and go up to 40+. Register online at Macker.com Basketball July 20-24, 9 a.m.-noon Registration Fee Members: $70 Program Participants: $80 Cost includes camp registration, camp t-shirt, and basketball if registered by July 10, 2015. This camp is for any boy or girl ages 8-13 who is interested in playing and learning more about basketball. Campers will be placed on different teams according to age group. Ages 8-10, 11-13. Volunteers are needed to make this event a success! Red Raider Football Camp Sign up at the YMCA. Program Participants: $50 Maple City Track Club Monday and Wednesday, June and July Track meets are usually scheduled for Wednesdays. Registration Fee Members: 1st Child $15/Each additional Child $10 Program Participants: 1st $25/Each additional Child $20 This is a summer track and field program for boys and girls ages 5 and up (must be 5 by the start of the season). It is designed to be a developmental program where the athletes compete in their own age groups in various track and field events. The goal is to introduce the sport of track and field in a fun competitive atmosphere. July 27-July 31, 6-8 p.m. Daily individual skill instruction held at the Maple City Park (turf field), offensive and defensive skill instruction and instruction on proper techniques for various football skills. Soccer League August-October Registration Fee Members:1st Child $15/Each additional Child $10 Program Participants: 1st $25/Each additional Child $20 The Hornell YMCA will hold its annual youth soccer league once again this fall. The league will start August 22 and continue through October 13. This program is for boys and girls entering grades K-6. The players are split into age group divisions. Registration forms available mid June. Certified race route. Special Events Hornell YMCA • 5 CREATING BIRTHDAY MEMORIES A birthday party is fun and easy when you have it at the Y! The YMCA offers a variety of party options for all ages Birthday parties, scouts, youth groups, teens or family gatherings. Parties include use of party room, simple decorations and a YMCA staff person to lead activities. Book your child’s next birthday party at the Y and let us help create lasting memories for your child’s birthday. Available Days Saturdays: 1–2:30 p.m. 3–4:30 p.m. *other times may be available upon request In the event that the pool becomes unavailable for a scheduled birthday party reservation, we will make every effort to relocate the party guests to the aerobic studio or art room with activities. It is rare that the pool closes, however, sometimes there are situations beyond our control. We will always do our best to provide an exceptional celebration experience. Party Reservations You must reserve the date at least 2 weeks in advance with a completed emergency contact list. Full nonrefundable fee due upon booking. Due to the limited number of time spots available, we cannot officially hold your spot without a registration and payment. Time slots are available on a first come-first served basis. ****Specialty Items/Decorations: Please feel free to bring any balloons or other decorative items that you feel will make your party event even more special! The person making the reservation is responsible to pay for all damages to YMCA property that may occur during the reserved party. The YMCA is not responsible for personal items left in any areas. Member: $130 Program Participant: $150 6 • Hornell YMCA American Red Cross Classes at the Y LIFEGUARDING (15+) May 15 5-9 p.m., May 16 and 17 9 a.m.-5 p.m. MUST ATTEND ALL CLASSES; 30 hour class-hours are a combination of homework/study and class time at the Y. Cost: $175.00 per person The fee will not be refunded should you fail to pass the prerequisite swim. Whether you are looking for a great summer job or career as a professional lifeguard, the Hornell Area Family YMCA Lifeguard program is the place to begin! Through classroom activities, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn the skills you need to work as a lifeguard. A lifeguard develops the skills everyone needs; leadership, teamwork and self-confidence. When you choose to become a lifeguard you are taking a stand to be a lifesaver, to protect others, and to serve your community. Bring your swimsuit (one piece for women), towel, snack, comfortable clothing, and a great attitude. To receive the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification a participant must: >>Attend 100% of all class sessions >>Arrive on time for all class sessions Develop the skills you will need to succeed, gain personal and professional confidence, and even advance into an aquatics career. Pre-Requisite for Admission into Class Assessed on First Day of Class >>300-yard Swim (not timed) Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. >>Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. >>Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits. >>Basic Skills combination Within 1:40 minutes: >>Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. >>Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object >>Demonstrate maturity, respect and responsibility regardless of passing written and skill test >>Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface for breathing. Candidates must not swim the distance under water. >>Take a Stand. Register today for Lifeguard Training. >>Exit water without using a ladder or steps >>Participate 100% in all class sessions >>Pass written and skills test American Red Cross JUNIOR LIFEGUARDING (Age 11+) July,13-31 Monday-Friday, 1-3 p.m. MUST ATTEND ALL CLASSES; Hours vary depending on delivery method. $75.00 per person (30 hours) This American Red Cross program provides a strong foundation for future successful completion of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course. Jr. Guards will work out to improve their physical fitness both on land and in the water. They will learn about causes and ways to prevent drowning and diving accidents, how to supervise others around water, how to recognize when someone is in trouble, basic first aid, CPR, and AED. Jr. Guards will develop leadership skills necessary to become successful lifeguards including effective communication, how to make informed decisions, how to work as a team and about customer service. Junior Lifeguards will have the opportunity to continue their training through our volunteer program. Pre-requisite: >>Ability to swim front crawl 25 yards continuously using side breathing. >>Tread water for 1 minute, submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet. If no alternative is available, a full credit will be issued to your Y account. There are no makeups for inclement weather. ADULT SWIM LESSONS Member: $22 Program Participants: $44 Adults (18+) who want to learn to swim or want to improve swim skills can do just that in adult swim lessons. All lessons are 30 minutes in length. Lessons offered once a week for 2 months. YOUTH SWIM LESSONS Member: $22 Program Participants: $44 All students, ages 6 months (with a participating adult) to age 17, build self-confidence from trained instructors who emphasize personal safety, swimming skills, social skills and endurance. Choose lessons once per week for two months or twice per week for one month. All lessons are 30 minutes in length. Pre-registration is required as class sizes are limited. We are offering a punch card for water fitness classes. You now have 12 class times to use in a month. You may use those 12 visits any day of the week that fits your schedule. This fun (and challenging) aqua workout will tone your body by using the water for resistance training. Enjoy the water while focusing on flexibility and cardiovascular training to raise both the heart rate and the intake of oxygen. Water Warriors Tuesday and Thursday 6-7 p.m. Member: $23 per month Program Participant: $38 per month While this class requires no coordination, it does demand a lot of stamina and is great for students who need a new challenge and prefer hard, athletic workouts. This class is full of fun and energizing activities designed to help you reach your fitness goals now! Regardless of your age, size, or fitness level, you can achieve very noticeable results. Whether you are a beginner, an avid fitness enthusiast or simply looking for a new type of workout, this aquatic adventure is for you! Participants should be comfortable in the water. WATER WALKING/RUNNING Any time the pool is available. Member: FREE Program Participant: Guest Fee This independent workout is a low-impact water workout that focuses on balance, coordination, range of motion and muscle strengthening exercises. Not only will you be working out, but you will have the opportunity to meet new friends and socialize. Water fitness classes are a great, low-impact way to stay in shape. 10 • Hornell YMCA Aquatics SPECIALITY AQUATICS World’s Largest Swimming Lesson Day! Thursday, June 18, 10 a.m. wherever you are! Free to all participants. The nation’s top water safety and training organizations are joining forces to present The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL), Thursday, June 18, 2015, to build awareness about the vital importance of teaching children to swim to help prevent drowning. On June 18th, waterparks, pools and other aquatic facilities around the globe will host local WLSL at 10 a.m. wherever you are in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record. Swimming is a life-saving skill for children and a vital tool to prevent drowning, the leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for children ages 1-14. The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ was created to serve as a platform to help local community aquatic facilities and the many different national, regional and state wide water safety and drowning prevention organizations work together to tell this important story on a local and national level. It’s official – the 2014 Guinness World Record (GWR) for The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ is 36,564 participants from 22 countries around the globe. That’s AMAZING – five years – five Guinness World Records and more than 100 million media impressions helping spread the word Swimming Lessons Save Lives. Underwater Photography Workshop Sunday April 19, 2-4 p.m. Member: $15 Program Participant: $25 Underwater Photography is a growing trend with many underwater camera options. Take this class to learn some of the techniques you can use to take wonderful under water pictures! FUNDAMENTALS OF CANOEING September 26, 3-5 p.m. $15 per person (2 hour lesson) Learn the basics of flat-water canoeing: paddling strokes, canoe safety, and rescue techniques, in this excellent introduction to canoeing skills for all ages. Scouting Badge Work By Appointment Only. $5 per Scout Our Y will work with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to complete the requirements for their swimming merit badges. Badge work includes one hour of instruction and one hour reqreational swim. Chaperones must be available to swim with scouts. Imagine yourself at the helm, the wind in your hair, captain of your own cardboard craft. Let your imagination go wild! Now sketch this masterpiece of transportation. BUILD Boat must be made of typical cardboard box material and duct tape only. Fasteners, sealers, or any other materials will not be allowed. All cardboard must be covered with duct tape. There must be no exposed cardboard inside or outside of the boat. Permanent markers may be used for decorating your finished craft. Boat must be no longer than 6-feet and no wider than 3-feet. Hint: Fold a lot and cut sparingly. You may bring your materials and complete construction of your boat before the racing begins. Your boat will be paddled by hand. No paddles of any kind will be allowed. Winning boats will be dismantled to check for compliance with construction rules. You may swim anytime, there are no exclusive programming times. * Through the end of June SWIM ASSESSMENT All children 8th grade (14 years old and under) will be required to take the swim assessment and will be assigned a green, yellow or red swim band which must be worn at all times while in the pool. Swim bands are break-away bands worn around your child’s neck or wrist. These bands assist our certified lifeguards in keeping our inexperienced swimmers safe. All elementary age school children 6th grade (12 years old and under) must have a parent or guardian (18+) in the pool or on the pool deck/area with them. If a child does not want to be swim tested they will be considered a RED swimmer and must adhere to the RED swimmer rules. All visiting groups and guests will be swim tested. Please refer to the group policy for supervision requirements. A swimmer who does not meet age or height requirements but is a proficient swimmer may be considered for a yellow or green band on a case by case basis. There are lifejackets available. Lifeguards may ask a child to wear a lifejacket for their personal safety. RED BAND (ages 0-5 years) Must remain in shallow water, have an adult (18 years or older) in the water within arm’s reach and actively involved in the supervision of the child. YELLOW BAND (ages 6-14 years) Must stay in shallow water. Yellow swimmers are shallow water competent. GREEN BAND (ages 6-14 years AND 45 inches tall) Swimmers must swim front crawl from the shallow end to the deep end, tread water 30 seconds, and swim back crawl to return to the shallow end. Swimmer is not allowed to touch the bottom of the pool at any time during the swim test. After the swim test, participants must jump into the deep end and climb out on the side of the pool with ease. Ladders may not be used. Childcare Child Care BEFORE & AFTER-SCHOOL CHILDCARE The Hornell Y operates a before and after-school childcare program in the Wayland Elementary school, an after-school program in the Canisteo Elementary school and an after-school program at the Hornell Y. Breakfast is offered in the Wayland morning program. All childcare programs are NYS licensed programs developed by the YMCA to foster a child’s personal, physical, and emotional growth. Our programs encourage children to build friendships with other children from different schools and backgrounds, fosters self-confidence and independence, and allows each child to learn the importance of caring and sharing with others. Children enjoy arts & crafts, gym activities, games, stories, and homework help. Children at our Hornell program receive regular art & music time. A nutritious snack is served daily in all programs. Pickleball is a combination of tennis and badminton played by hitting whiffle balls with light-weight wooden paddles. Played on a badminton court with a 3 foot high net, pickleball can be played in singles or doubles. Pickleball doesn’t require a lot of racket skills so it’s a great lead-up game to tennis for youth and quite popular with seniors because of the smaller court.
