Generally, the more premature the baby is, the more assistance the baby will need. Breathing problems are the most common issue for premature babies. The lungs are the last major organ system to mature in the womb. In a premature baby, the part of the brain and spinal cord that controls breathing is not yet mature enough to remind the baby to breathe non-stop. This causes bursts of breath followed by periods of shallow breathing, or even stopped breathing, which is referred to as apnea of prematurity. Much of the equipment in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit at Brad & Leanne with Ventilator HSN has to do with ventilation. The baby may require the help of a machine to breathe or have the machine completely take over the function of breathing. A ventilator is a machine that controls the amount of air and oxygen a baby receives, by controlling the number of breaths per minute, and the air pressure with each breath that goes into the lungs. It is attached to the endotracheal tube (ET tube) in the baby’s mouth or nose. What Are The Advantages of the CLiO2 Ventilator? Premature baby at Neo-natal Intensive Care Pediatrics Unit at HSN. • The CLiO2 ventilator provides continuous on screen assessment of baby’s oxygen status • Built-in pulse oximetry monitoring • Tight control over the desired oxygen saturation range • Advanced safety features How Can This Ventilator Help NICU Babies? KICX 91.7 General Manager Mick Weaver at KICX for Kids Campaign launch at HSN. 4 • The CliO2 Ventilator continuously monitors baby’s oxygen saturations and automatically adjusts the oxygen as fast as every second. Compared with manual adjustments by the nurse, automated adjustments increase the time within the intended saturation range • With automated oxygen control, the number of manual oxygen adjustments is reduced, allowing more efficient use of the nurse’s time • Helps to wean the baby from requiring oxygen
