Dear Friends,
The following pages contain a regional report that we hope will empower and acknowledge you
for your incredible help in educating our region’s youth. With Texas legislature’s recent passage
of House Bill 5 – a state mandate that changes the requirements for high school graduation and
graduation planning – demand for JA’s programing has been unprecedented. Already one of the
nation’s largest chapters, JA of Southeast Texas has experienced a 29.2% student enrollment gain
during the past two school years.
Demand for JA’s programing is showing no signs of slowing in the near future. As our local
economy, population, and need for qualified workers increase, so does the need for the JA
programs. Junior Achievement efficiently and effectively builds the bridge between business and
education. Our volunteers engage students in lessons related to jobs, personal finance and free
enterprise – the engine that drives our economy.
During the 2013/2014 school year, 12,336 volunteers engaged students in more than 2.3 million
hours of activity-based lessons. These interactions enabled children to have unique experiences
to help them:

Realize what drives economic success, so they can perpetuate it in the future

Plan for the vast job opportunities being created and know how to compete for them

Acquire the skills necessary to manage personal finances for their short and long term
benefit

Experience by example how the soft skills are critical to achieving success
This past school year, 293,033 southeast Texas students from all grade levels and every
demographic imaginable, benefitted from you, thousands of teachers, volunteers and funders.

JA would also like to thank all our community partners
and charter schools who host JA’s programs. This list
includes KIPP, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston,
Boy Scouts, Precinct2Gether Youth Program, University
of Houston Youth Outreach, Neighborhood Centers, La
Petite Academy, 21st Century Ace Program, and YMCA.
Persevere
Junior Achievement volunteers often reach students in
ways they are not even aware. In the case of Reagan
High School senior Selena Martinez, Junior Achievement
offered more than just the standard financial literacy,
entrepreneurship, and work readiness skills.
Selena came from a home with a schizophrenic brother,
an alcoholic father, and soon ended up homeless.
However, she did not give up, and positive role models
soon entered her life. “JA volunteers taught the
importance of money management, taught us efficient
budgeting strategies and how to apply it to life. “
“These were lessons that were not a
part of my school curriculum, and quite
frankly, were not taught at home,”

Endure
This year, the Albert and Ethel Herzstein Center, which
houses JA BizTown and JA Finance Park, celebrated the
15th anniversary of its opening.
In January 1999, First Lady Barbara Bush cut the ribbon
and opened the facility’s doors for the first time. The
Junior Achievement Capstone building was the first of its
kind in the country. Since that day, more than 270,000 students in the greater Houston area have learned
financial literacy and work readiness from these programs.
“When the kids come through the door they are truly engaged,” says De Jones, JA Capstone Senior Director.
“It is a joy to watch them learn.”

Inspire
JA Inspire was the largest gather of students
in the history of Junior Achievement in the
US that engaged 8th grade students in a job
awareness fair, launched in Spring 2014. The
program enabled more than 8,000 Cy-Fair
students to interact with business
representatives and see displays from
hundreds of Southeast Texas companies.
Students learned about the skills and
education required for high demand jobs;
and developed individual career maps
through materials and instruction provided
by JA and participating companies.
During the fall semester of 2013 all Cy-Fair
ISD eight grade students completed a career
assessment program, which helped
determine their interest and aptitude for
career possibilities. This assessment
combined students' aptitude in English,
Mathematics, Reading and Science as well as
a personal career interest inventory to help
each student design a potential career path.
JA Inspire provided direct access to those
career possibilities.
Students were able to interact with Houston
area businesses that participated as
exhibitors and showcased their company's
jobs of the future. Exhibitors provided a
"hands-on" experience in their booths to
ensure impact for all learning styles. Students
were provided information on the jobs they learned about as each exhibitor was included in the career guide
that each student received. This guide provided a company overview and job descriptions that included skills
needed and educational requirements.
In the 2014-15 school year, two more JA Inspire events will be held to include school districts from East Harris
County. These districts include Barbers Hill, Pasadena, Galena Park, Goose Creek, La Porte, Channelview, Deer
Park, and Sheldon. This will allow an additional 10,000 students to experience JA Inspire this school year.
