Federation University (Ballarat Arts Academy) in partnership with Sydney
TAFE is delighted to be offering, for the first time in Sydney, the highly
acclaimed degree in Music Theatre.
Small, intensive and practice-based, this degree is now recognised as one of
the most creative and productive professional training programs in Australian
Performing Arts.
The program seeks to develop complete multi–skilled performers for the
professional music theatre industry. In an intimate studio environment, students
learn, through carefully graded exercises, all the requisite skills of the working
music theatre artist: Voice, Singing, Acting and Dance.
Along with practical and theoretical classes students participate in the creation
of new music theatre works. Dedicated staff are all industry professionals
and respected teachers, augmented by a raft of visiting guest directors and
professional artists. Recent international guests include Josh Hilberman, Thelma
Goldberg, Adam Guettel, Nancye Hayes, Michael Lavine, John Bucchino, Kim
Smith, and Faith Prince.

Federation University proudly celebrates the award winning achievements of
recent graduates: the MAC Cabaret Award (New York, 2009), the Green Room
Award for the Best Featured Ensemble Member (Guys and Dolls, 2009), as well
as a nomination for the Green Room Award for Best Female Artist in a Leading
Role (Hairspray, 2010). Graduates are currently working at the highest levels
of the Performing Arts Industry, both here and abroad, in productions such as
Strictly Ballroom, Cirque De Soleil, King Kong, Mamma Mia, Cats, Les Miserables,
Hairspray, Jersey Boys, Mary Poppins and Wicked. High profile graduates of the
program include Cristina D’Agostino, Josh Piterman, Jaz Flowers, Kim Smith,
Jared Newall and Graeme Foote, along with many others currently working

The process of gaining a place in the Bachelor
of Arts (Music Theatre) program
Q. How do I apply?
A. To enter the Bachelor of Arts (Music Theatre) degree at Sydney TAFE –
applicants will need to complete an online application form which is available on
the Federation University website https://apply.federation.edu.au/. Applicants will
also undergo an extensive audition process. Applicants must complete an audition
pro-forma along with the online application, which is available at the Arts Academy
website http://federation.edu.au/faculties-and-schools/faculty-of-education-andarts/school-of-arts-humanities-and-social-sciences/arts-academy/performing-arts/
apply . The website also shows the criteria for auditions, including a selection of
monologues from which candidates must choose. These monologues are available
online from the August 1, 2014. Applications for auditions close October 7, 2014.
Applicants will receive notification of their status after the call-back.
Note Sydney TAFE applicants are not required to register with VTAC.
Q. What happens at the Audition for Music Theatre?
A. At the first round, performers in music theatre prepare two songs from the
music theatre repertoire and one contemporary monologue from the assigned
list. Applicants perform these individually to a panel. At the end of this audition
there may be a small interview. If selected to continue to the call-back stage of the
auditions, candidates will be invited to attend a further audition in a group. This
audition is more in-depth and includes dance, singing, acting and music theory.
Attendance at the call-back is essential to you being considered for a place in the
program.
Q. What level of commitment do we expect?
A. We are looking for evidence of performing talent, however we are also looking
for the potential to be trained in a highly demanding discipline. A good work
ethic is imperative. You need to prepare your monologues and songs well, and
should you gain a place at the Sydney TAFE, be prepared to work hard and
intensively with a small and passionate group of fellow artists. Good attendance
is compulsory. Preparation is required. Strict deadlines are always a feature of the
work. Physical fitness and flexibility are needed at all levels of the course, and there
is an emphasis on the habits of good health and self-discipline.
Q. Do I need to have a lot of experience to get in to the Music
Theatre program?
A. Whilst a good training in one or more of the main disciplines of singing, dance
and voice is going to be an advantage, we are really looking for someone who has
put time and effort into their preparation, has an understanding of how a text works
and has a healthy and fit mind, body and voice. Remember, we are looking for
ability, evidence of adequate preparation, but also a willingness to get in and have
a go!
Q. How should candidates prepare?
A. Know your songs and its context. Practice with
live accompaniment. Candidates should bring legible
copies of their music already marked up for our
accompanist and in the correct key. You may bring your
own accompanist. All candidates should be dressed
neatly with closed footwear. Jeans, belts and excessive
jewellery are not appropriate. Dancewear or equivalent
will be required for the call-back.
Q. Do we accept deferrals?
A. No. In such a physically and mentally demanding
environment, candidates are selected on their current
fitness and health. A person who turns down an offer is
encouraged to re-audition. Many people get in on their
second try.
Q. Can I perform in amateur plays/musicals
once I start the Music Theatre Program?
A. No. You need to focus on consistent training.
Q. Where in Sydney will the Music Theatre be
offered?
A. The course has been announced to be positioned in
Ultimo and Chippendale with in close proximity to the
ABC studios, where many major productions rehearse
in Sydney and theatres like the Capitol and Lyric.
