After the terrorist attack on Boyleston Street during the running of
the Boston Marathon, runners gathered, ran, and raised money to
honor and support those affected by the bombings. Above, the 2.62
mile run at Running, Etc in Ghent on Monday, April 22nd, gets ready
to start. One of many events that took place in Hampton Roads and
around the country. Photo by Jonathan Harris.
Boston - Runners United Two Remember at Crossfit Unparelleled
was another benefit supported by the Tidewater Striders, Crossfit, The Dai Roberts Group, Hampton Roads Running Group, and
many more on Saturday, April 27, 2013.

President’s Corner
Are you a USA
Triathlon Member?
Members:
This column will be a little shorter than
usual as I’ve missed my deadline and
Ada is waiting patiently for my e-mail.
Certainly, the tragedy of Boston’s is on
everyone’s mind and we are so glad that all
of our members made it back home, safe
and sound. I know that many of you have
participated in various activities in support
of the Boston tragedy. The Striders are
collecting donations for One Fund Boston
to support the victims of the Boston
Marathon Bombing. Please visit our
website for additional information. Any
transaction fees will be paid by the Club.
You can donate any amount of money,
large or small.
If so, update your membership to show
your affiliation with the Tidewater Striders.
Login at USATriathlon.org, click on profile,
click on Edit Profile, click on Club, click on
Edit Club, choose Virginia and then a list of
the Virginia Triathlon Clubs including the
Tidewater Striders will be among the list.

NOW, sign up for the Jamestown
International Triathlon on June 8, 2013
which is the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Club
Championship. All members that race
score some points for the Striders no matter
where they place.
I would like to welcome back Barb Mathewson to the Striders board. Barb come with
experience to the board having previously served. Sharon Rodier resigned for personal
reasons.

This time of year is so busy for everyone and certainly with our Club. The annual RRCA
convention is in a couple of weeks and the Striders will be well represented. As you
know, Sherry and Angelo Celesia will be there to accept their award of outstanding youth
program Directors. Since they won that award, it was announced that a fourth location,
Chesapeake, will be adding sites for the fall season. Keep reading this issue for more
exciting news about our running youths.

Close to 35 members attended Sam Wittenberg’s running clinic, the “ABCD” drills.
Virginia Wesleyan College indoor track provided an excellent venue and everyone got
to practice these drills. We hope to do more clinics like these, since this one was so well
received.

December 2013
I’d like to express my personal thanks to outgoing Board Member, Sharon Rodier. She
has served our club well with her contributions on the board as well as several committees
from Awards to Multi-Sport. Her support of the Rundown and Banquet improvements is
especially appreciated.
It is with great relief that this Rundown only includes good news about our fellow Striders
and their families and friends that were in Boston during the bombing on Boyleston Street.
The colors emphasized in this Rundown are just a small tribute!
See ya at the races - Stay Boston Strong,

The RUNDOWN - May 2013
Garson Wins Age Group at
USATF Masters Championships
by Steve Durrant
Strider walker Rebecca Garson, also known as “Ru”, recently
competed in the 3000 Meter Race Walk event at the 2013 USATF
Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships held in Landover,
MD, March 22nd – 24th. She was one of sixteen women race
walkers competing in the 15 lap event on the 200 meter indoor
oval track. Ru finished in 5th place overall and 1st in the W45 – 49
age group. She was able to beat her personal goal by 8 seconds,
passing two competitors in the final 20 meters of the race.
During the race, three of the 16 competitors were disqualified by
the race walk judges for failing to maintain proper race walking
form. They were observed by three of the five walk judges to
have either (1) failed to keep one foot on the ground at all times,
or (2) failed to have their advancing leg completely straightened
as the heel struck the ground and then maintain a straight leg until
the body passed over the leg in the vertical position. Rebecca
commented that the race walk judges were tough – but fair – on
bent knee calls.

Donations for Boston
Ru’s final comment to me was, “It was a tough race physically, but
I hung in there. I cannot wait to train and compete in the 15K!”
The 2013 USATF Masters National 15K Race Walk Championship
is scheduled for May 19th at Riverside, California. Go Ru!
The City of Boston and Massachusetts quickly established The
One Fund - Boston which has raised almost $27 million dollars
since it’s inception. The Striders fundraising efforts have been for
this organization. If you wish to donate with the Striders, please
Another fund which may be of special interest to active individuals,
such as Tidewater Striders, is the No Barriers Boston Fund, set
up by No Barriers USA; this fund will specifically support providing
prosthetic limbs for athletic use for survivors of the Boston bombing. The organization No Barriers are experts in helping people to
get outside and be active with prosthetics.

TIDEWATER STRIDERS BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
Minutes for March 4, 2013
The meeting was called to order at 6:36 by
President, Jean Phelan. Mel and Rich were
absent. The February Meeting Minutes
were approved.
Presidents report:
Jean reported that Sam Wittenberg
will conduct a clinic of the ABCD’s of
Running for the club on Sunday, March
24th at Virginia Wesleyan College. Sam is
RRCA certified. The clinic will be open to
everyone.
The Lion’s club will be having their “Vision
Walk” on April 28th. Strider members have
requested permission to have a “Striders
Team” to participate in the event. There
was agreement that we should have as
many teams for community races as we
can.
Several members mentioned that they
would like to contribute to a memorial for
Bill Bailey. He was a long time Strider
member who recently passed away. Dan
will contact Bill’s wife Sheila, to make
the contribution to the organization of her
choice.
Mel has suggested that we have a survey of
our members to see what they would like
to see or have suggestions for the club. A
survey had been done in 2001 by CNU.
Dan suggested that Mel work with other
members to start constructing a survey that
we could have members complete online.
Vice President Report:
Jean reported for Rich that “Adopt a Hiway” is scheduled for next Sunday, March
10th. It is the week prior to the Shamrock.
We will clean both sides Shore Drive
starting at the west entrance of Fort Story.
A cookout will be held at Rich’s after the
clean up.
Treasurer’s Report:
Dan reported that we are down $10,000 for
the month and about $31,000, including
the cost of the Chrono system, for this year.
We do not have the final settlement on the
banquet, but it was within the budget. The
banquet is subsidized by the club. Dan
also answered questions regarding CDs
designated only for use for scholarships
and accounting procedures for the Strider
History publication.
Old Business:
Although the weather was cold and rainy
for the final Distance series which limited
participation, we came out even financially
on the Distance Series. Dan will check
to get us set up for credit cards, so race
day registration can be done. Sharon
will provide an i-pad for the credit card
transactions.
Defibrillators – Our discussion continued
on the possibly purchasing defibrillators.
Dan had addressed the issue with the
RRCA, and there is an increased legal
risk if members are not trained to use
the defibrillators if we have them. Also,
Amiele reported that defibrillators are
only effective in certain circumstances.
Discussion will be tabled until next month.
The History Committee consisting of
Randy Cook, chairman, Mel, Lisa, Sherry,
Steve and Dave has had their first meeting.
They would like to be moved from “Ad
hoc” to a full Strider committee. This
change would have to be made in the bylaws. All by laws must be approved at the
general meeting at the picnic in August.
The committee should also decide where
the archives will be located.
New Business:
Sherry advised on the membership drive.
Sherry will contact Lisa Janke to chair the
membership drive. “Each one, Reach oneor two or more” will start in April and end
Sept. 30th. Discussion was held on how
we would capture the credit of who has
brought in new members and how many
prizes will be awarded. Sherry will prepare
the membership drive for publication in the
April RunDown.
Sherry also suggested that we consider
having a youth advisory board. This group
would not only advise on youth issues, but
also would be a way of developing youth
leadership within the club. Ideas were
shared that the youth board could meet
individually and could involve our college
scholarship runners. The board could come
to our meeting each quarter to present their
ideas and concerns. Sherry will prepare
proposal for the next meeting.
Deb reported on the “Walking Action
Committee” held in Norfolk this past
weekend. Mel and Deb attended.
Membership:
Dan reported that there are companies
that handle both the race signup and also
that will take memberships at the same
time. Currently RaceIt cannot handle both
transactions concurrently. Also family
memberships and race transactions can be
handled more efficiently.
Grand Prix: Neptune 8K has been added
to the runner’s Grand Prix. Ada will score
the multisport events.
Sharon and Gene Bachman will research
the possibility and cost of getting tri -tops
for our tri team.
It was also noted that Sunny Fox has the
Strider logo so she can embroider articles
for Strider events or members.
Merchandise: Dave reported that he will
sell singlets, hats, and the Strider History at
the Shamrock expo. The extra gloves from
the Distance Series will be given to new
members as a premium.
Meeting adjourned at 8:25

10 Reasons Runners LOVE Bikram Yoga
1.You build lung capacity! From the first breathing exercise to the final posture, your lungs are stretched
beyond their normal elasticity. You will find you are taking bigger and deeper breaths than you ever have before.
2.You sweat! For 90 minutes, you are exercising in a 105 degree room. Be prepared to sweat and detox. 90% of
your body is made up of water. It’s important to flush toxins and rehydrate with fresh water to keep your body healthy and
happy.
3.Improved cardiovascular
as your cardiovascular system goes.
activity! 90 minutes of Bikram yoga is equal to 90 minutes of jogging, as far
4.You can practice with an injury! Many runners find that at some point in their running career an injury
surfaces. While you may have to break from running, you can always practice Bikram Yoga. It’s a great alternative when
you can’t run, not to mention a quick way to get your body back in to shape.
5.Heals old injuries! Injuries can remain dormant in your body for a life time. Whether you recognize it or not, old
injuries affect your performance. Yoga works through the tourniquet effect of compression and release. As you practice
yoga, circulation reaches these parts of your body and works like a pressure washer to clean out scar tissue and damage
that has been done, restoring your body to it’s natural state.
6.You become bullet proof! It is true that Bikram Yoga is as mentally challenging as it is physically. The mind
will give out out long before the body. The more you practice, the more you find you become bullet proof and those
half marathons seem like nothing!
7.Makes you alkaline! Practicing yoga creates an environment in your body that makes you much more immune
to sickness and disease. Your doctor will love you!
8.Encourages healthy habits! The more you practice yoga, the more you find yourself making better choices
for yourself. This includes lifestyle, diet and nutrition, and overall decision making.
9.You will have a better spine than you did when you were a kid! In Bikram Yoga, the natural body’s range
of motion is restored and you will find your body starting to do things you haven’t done since you were 10!
10.Yoga is a path to self-realization! As humans our potential is limitless. We are 100% responsible for
our experience on this planet! Acceptance of this is liberating and can bring infinite happiness and success to your life.

“ABCD” Drills
Sam Wittenberg, owner and coach of Fit to Run Coaching, held a clinic for the Tidewater Striders in March. The information provided
below was part of his handout.
ABCD Skips
Some additional exercises that you can do through the day
(Exercise Snacks)
A skips The emphasis for this skip[ is on a quick push of yor foot to the
ground, which inititates the knee lift of the opposite leg. This is
not a high-knee “lifting”; instead, the leg powerfully pushes down
with the purpose of bouncing off the ground. This skip requires
strong hip extension and propels the runner forward.
• Walk backward and focus on hip extension.
• Walking lunges forward and backward. This works on hip
mobility and stability.
• Old fashioned jumping jacks. Great for the spring of the feet
and Achilles.
B skips The emphasis for this skip is on pulling the leg down with glutes
and hamstrings, preparing for the contact phase cloer to your
center of mass.
• Basic squats- works glute activation
• Ditch the chair and stand on one leg
• 180 step/minute cadence drill
C skips This drill takes mobility and coordination; so, progress gradually,
starting with small hops. The emphasis for this skip is on extending/
driving the push off leg. The pelvis must be neutral and the lower
back should not be extended. When practicing this skip, focus on
your hip extension to achieve some “hang time.” Land softly, and
load your legs as if they were a spring. Do one bound at a time
at walking speed to get the coordination, the progress to a faster
speed.
D skips This drill emphasizes the elastic “pop” of the foot off the ground.
With a strong and springy foot, flick the heel up towards the
glutes. Be sure to use the foot for recoil primarily and assist with
the hamstrings, not the calves, quads, or lower back. Jog gently
forward and flick the heel up on every 2nd Step following the same
principles. Note that the lower leg need not go beyond parallel to
ground.
Sam discusses some of the drills with participants at the clinic.

First Marathon at Age 64
by Richard Pidgeon
I have never been athletic, but I did start
walking for fitness in February 2011, 62
years old then. My dad and his brothers all
died from heart disease so it made sense to
“take some steps” to strengthen my heart.
In the past exercise programs have always
failed, sometimes due to injuries like
hernia or shoulder separation but usually
motivation was the problem. Injuries
shouldn’t be a problem if the exercise was
walking and motivation issues could be
overcome by using various scenic walking
sites, I thought. By April I’d walked at First
Landing State Park, Norfolk Botanical
Gardens, Virginia Beach Oceanfront, and
all around the neighborhood and those
places started seeming pretty familiar.
About mid month I decided I needed a
goal: the Rock and Roll Half Marathon. It
made a difference that kept me going. I got
some books on walking from the library
and learned a little about stretching and
nutrition. I bought a Garmin Forerunner
305 as a training aid after doing some online research. Now I had a record of my
workout and could relate heart rates to
paces and distances. By September, after
lots of four mile loops in the neighborhood
and some longer walks of 8 and 10 miles I
was ready. The Rock and Roll went well;
I was hot, tired, and dizzy at the end, but
achieved my goal. It was my first athletic
event.
Near the end of that race, heading north
on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk toward
the distant finish line, a woman next to me
held out her hand and introduced herself
as Lizzy Shepard, a racewalking coach
with the Tidewater Striders. We walked
next to each other for a mile or so and she
encouraged me to join the Striders and a
group of racewalkers that meet on Saturday
mornings at Mount Trashmore. I was a
walker but Lizzy saw me as a racewalker. A
couple of months later I got on the Striders
web site and emailed the walking POC,
Heidi Sleasman, a request for walking
information,. She got back to me with
the time and place to meet that coming
Saturday. I joined the Striders that day.
The next Saturday I went to Mt Trashmore
and met some of the group. I learned the
attendance can change from week to
week depending on each person’s races or
other commitments, and so I met more of
the Striders walking community as time
went on. Walkers of different levels of
ability walk at different paces in groups or
singly. I found all of them to be supportive
and willing to share useful information.
One piece of good advice was to read
Boomerwalk, by Brent Bohlen, who shows
walking is a program for someone of any
age. A racewalking clinic would help me, I
was told, and I attended one given by Dave
McGovern.
It was fun for me to try to keep up with
the Big Dogs who start out fast and often
pick up the pace with each two mile loop. I
could hang with them for a little while but
not a full loop. One day a few months later
I did keep up for a loop and four more, a
total of ten miles. I was thrilled.
In 2012 I entered Striders Distance Series,
Elizabeth River Run, USATF judged
racewalking events at VA Senior Games
and USATF Regional Championships,
the Summer Series, Rock and Roll Half
Marathon, Yeah Buddy Half Marathon,
and Crawlin’ Crab Half Marathon. The
amount of help the Striders walking group
has given me along the way is surprising.
Participating with the Tumor Busters team
of walkers at the 24 Hour Cancer Relay
fundraiser in April was a highlight for
2012, and we had a very successful event.
Between these events was training and
finding the motivation to train was not an
issue now. With so many events and not
wanting to do poorly in front of your friends
how could a person not want to train? In
June I registered for the 2013 Shamrock
Marathon. Those Striders around me told
me I could do it and I believed them.
This year I started with the Hair of the Dog
and “enjoyed” the Distance Series, the
longer version this year. The day the second
DS race was to be held but was cancelled
due to weather I met two of the Big Dogs
at Mt Trashmore for 16 miles in the ice and
snow. Between those events I was training
at different speeds and distances up to 20
miles. I was ready!
The only problem was that on March 17 I
was sick. Bronchitis had bit me bad and all
week I’d been coughing a lot making it hard
to sleep. I’d been to the doctor during the
week and had cough syrup that worked but
left me feeling so strange I stopped taking
it the Friday before the race. On Sunday
the race went fairly well, extremely well
considering everything. “Big Dog” Steve

Shapiro walked with me and his support
was a major reason why I did well that day.
Before the race Strider Cindy Alexander
painted green beards on us - a source of
compliments throughout the race. That’s
pretty much it. The story behind my first
marathon at age 64 is a lot longer than the
story of the race itself, just as the training
before any race is longer that the race
itself. I have to admit it was an emotional
moment at the finish line hearing my name
broadcast over the speaker system for
completing a marathon!
Those in the Tidewater Strider’s walking
contingent have taught me, encouraged
me, and inspired me. You might say I’m
a walking collection of many valuable
pieces information, thanks to them. Some
of those walkers are cancer survivors or
have chronic health issues, something I
thought about during the marathon. I want
to give special thanks to those giving extra
encouragement and personal support to
me: my wife Betsy, and Striders Cindy
Alexander, Paula Graham, Lori Sherwood,
Buddy Levitin, Steve Durrant, Hartley
Dewey, and Steve Shapiro.

The Athlete’s Kitchen - Sodium, Muscle Cramps and Sweat Losses: Tips for
Sweaty Runners Copyright: Nancy Clark MS RD CSSD April 2013
We’ve all heard the stories about
marathoners and soldiers who have died
due to consuming too much water. Clearly,
overhydration can be as dangerous to your
health as underhydration. So what does
a sweaty endurance runner need to know
about staying adequately hydrated without
stomach sloshing? Dr. Timothy Noakes’
book Waterlogged: The Serious Problem of
Overhydration in Endurance Sports is an
interesting yet controversial resource that
addresses that question.
According to Dr. Noakes, the sports drink
industry has effectively marketed a positive
image (successful athletes) despite having
an overhyped product (salted sugar-water).
Noakes believes the sports drink industry
has brainwashed athletes to overhydrate—
and this has created life-threatening
problems. For example, between 1983 and
1998, more than 700 cases of exerciseinduced hyponatremia (overhydration that
leads to low blood sodium, brain swelling,
coma, and even death) were documented
in the Gatorade-sponsored Ironman
Hawaii Triathlon. The participants had
been encouraged to drink copiously. Did
that advice backfire? For the Comrades
Marathon, participants were told to drink
according to thirst. Race organizers placed
aid stations every 5 km (3 miles), and cases
of hyponatremia dropped.
The information in Waterlogged challenges
the theory drink before you get thirsty.
Noakes believes elite athletes who become
champions can tolerate significant sweat
loss without intolerable thirst. He contends
the associated weight lost via sweating
enhances performance. Others question
if those athletes could run better if better
hydrated!
Below are a few droplets of lesscontroversial hydration information to help
you quench your thirst, perform well, and
stay out of the medical tent when you are
doing extended exercise in hot weather.
• Our bodies can deal with transient
underhydration that lasts from 4 to 8 hours.
In contrast, chronic dehydration leads
to health issues—such as happens when
elderly people are trapped in hot apartments
during a heat wave.
• Most runners feel thirsty at about 2%
dehydration. At that point, they’ll start
looking for water. Ultrarunners can
maintain performance at 3% dehydration.
(To determine your percent dehydration,
weigh yourself naked before and after your
workout. A one-pound drop equates to a
loss of 16-ounces of sweat; 2% dehydration
equates to a 3-pound sweat loss for a 150lb. runner.)
• Thirst is a powerful fluid regulator.
Noakes disapproves of the advice to drink
before you are thirsty because that can
create problems with overhydration. Yet,
others contend drinking on a schedule
can help endurance runners maintain
proper hydration, as long as they do not
aggressively overhydrate but rather replace
fluids according to their sweat losses
(as learned during training via pre-post
exercise weigh-ins).
• Exercise-induced hyponatremia (low
blood sodium) occurs when runners drink
excessively during prolonged exercise.
It can also occur when even dehydrated
endurance athletes lose significant
amounts of sodium in sweat. Data from
669 ultramarathoners indicates 15%
experienced low blood sodium. Of those,
24% were overhydrated, 36% were
dehydrated, and the rest were in fluid
balance (but not sodium balance) (1).
• The amount of sodium lost in sweat varies
from person to person. Some runners are
salty sweaters. Runners accustomed to
exercising in the heat retain more sodium
than unacclimatized runners. (Compare the
saltiness of your sweat on first hot day of
spring vs. in the fall.)
• Athletes lose relatively more water than
sodium, so under standard conditions, the
blood sodium level can actually increase
during exercise (unless you overhydrate).
But with abnormally high sodium high
losses, such as during an ultramarathon,
blood sodium can be low even in a
dehydrated runner. Hence, sodium
replacement can be a wise idea.
•The amount of sodium in a sports drink is
small—and unable to counter the dilution
of body fluids that occurs with overdrinking. The 220 milligrams of sodium
in 16 ounces of Gatorade is far less than
~1000 milligrams of sodium in 16 ounces
of sweat loss.
• Noakes says evidence is lacking to prove
that runners who cramp have low serum
sodium or are more dehydrated than noncrampers. He suggests muscle cramps are
related to fatigue, not sodium deficiency.
16
If sodium deficiency were the problem,
wouldn’t the entire body cramp, not just
one muscle?
• Exercise-induced muscle cramps
occur in muscles that perform repetitive
contractions. Runners who get cramps tend
to be those who do high intensity exercise,
as well as those who have a history of
cramping. Note: Many exercise scientists
believe there are two types of muscle
cramps: some related to fatigue, others
related to sodium imbalance. The science
of cramping lacks a clear consensus!
• Stopping exercise to stretch resolves
muscles cramping. (Stretching also
resolves nocturnal cramps.)
• A 2.5 oz. mouthful of (salty) pickle
juice has been shown to alleviate muscle
cramping within 90 seconds of drinking the
pickle juice. This rapid benefit is unlikely
due to changes in blood sodium levels—
too quick! Noakes speculates drinking the
(acidic) pickle juice triggers a reflex in the
throat that lessens or stops the cramps.
• A runner who collapses after the finish
line is most likely experiencing blood
pressure changes—not severe dehydration.
When exercise stops, the heart stops
pumping enough blood to the brain; the
runner collapses. What to do? Noakes
advises to quickly raise the athlete’s feet
and pelvis above the level of their heart.
This aids the return of blood to the heart
and rapidly corrects the situation—without
any IV fluids.
So what’s a sweaty endurance runner
supposed to do during prolonged exercise?
Learn your sweat rate and drink accordingly.
If fluid in your stomach starts “sloshing”,
stop drinking! The body can absorb about
600 to 1,000 ml/hour (women/ men).
Adding carbohydrates and sodium to the
water enhances fluid absorption as well as
palatability and performance. Consuming
“real” foods (salty pretzels, pickles,
chicken broth, ham-cheese-mustard wrap)
during ultraendurance events can do a fine
job of providing needed electrolytes. Just
don’t get too aggressive with water or
sodium intake—and have fun!

New Energy
Tidewater Striders Youth Running Group
Head Coach: Angelo Celesia acelesia@aol.com 288-7715
Chesapeake Training Venue Added for the Fall New Enery Outreach Program: POWER!
Starting in the fall of 2013, New Energy will add another training
site at Bells Mill in Chesapeake. Our own New Energy coach John
Gresock will be leading the group. He will be looking for some
assistance as we grow. Please let us know if you are interested in
helping our youth program expand to Chesapeake.
(Program Of Wonderfully Exceptional Runners)
We are thrilled to announce a running group for parents and their
children with disabilities. Todd Humphrey, current New Energy
coach and board member of the Tidewater Autism Society, will be
heading up this endeavor. Training will commence on Wednesday,
May 8th, at Mt. Trashmore from 5-6 p.m. (Kid’s Cove area facing
South Blvd.) This is a running session for all children with special
needs. All are welcome!
This will bring our New Energy program to four locations starting
in the Fall:
I - Mt Trashmore in Virginia Beach led by Angelo, Sherry and Jon
Leiding
All it takes is a membership in the Tidewater Striders at a minimal
cost and one or both parents accompanying their child to each
practice. Each child can be in a stroller or on foot; whatever
works best for the parents and child. We want every child to feel
part of “the team”. Uniforms (singlet and shorts) and Warm ups
(hoodie and pants) can be purchased at a cost of $10 per set, but
are optional.
II- Sleepy Hole Park in Suffolk led by Steve Sheppard
III- Norview HS in Norfolk led by Dave Mc Donald
IV- Bells Mill in Chesapeake led by John Gresock

Striders vs PTC/CRR Elizabeth River Run Team Competition
The Tidewater Striders will once again compete against our friends in the Peninsula
Track Club (PTC) and Colonial Road Runners (CRR) during the Elizabeth River Run
10K. We need to field a team of 25 Striders for this event. All those registered for the
race (as individuals, to include Golden Runners) are encouraged to throw their hat in the
ring. We will finalize the team the week prior to the race based on predicted age-graded
performance. The top ten Strider finishers will count for age-graded scoring purposes and
will be reimbursed for their efforts. Team members must be Striders in good standing on
race day and wear a Strider singlet (old or new version) during the race. Please contact
Gene Edwards (gene.edwards3@gmail.com) if you are interested in participating. For
more information on age-graded scoring go to: http://www.runnersworld.com/tools/agegraded-calculator
With Nancy Delaney in Tennessee, the
Striders will need even more help in the
Team Competition at ERR. Get on your

Race Summary & Highlights:
A few years ago, the Striders would
have been very excited to have over 20
New Energy runners and coaches at an

dedicated turnout.
The race was held at the Suffolk YMCA
campground on a long and muddy, but fun,
course. The course distance was 5.66K
instead of a 5K.
Tiffany Hore of Carrsville was the top
female finisher for the extended 5K and
she covered the course in 30:37. Beverly
Breeden was not far behind in 30:53.
Rounding out the top women finishers was
Catherine Ilich of Suffolk.
Coach Steve Sheppard pumped up our

“I run for Boston shirts” and back bibs
that said “I run for Boston”; we did see

As with the writing of any historical account, including the recent
publication of The History of the Tidewater Striders 1972-2012,
errors will be made. Additionally, the accomplishments of some
individuals or the occurrence of some significant events may
have been overlooked. The authors of this historical account, all
volunteers, recognize these facts and thus seek your input to correct
any errors and incorporate mention of significant accomplishments
or events as warranted.
A proposal is being discussed on bonus points for competing
at Breezy Point, the only Striders Triathlon, and Jamestown
International, where the Striders are trying to win the MidAtlantic
Club Championship. Get registered for these events now. Please
make sure you are registered as a Tidewater Strider

Introduction
The Striders experienced a hugely successful year in all
areas of operations. In a time when the economy had affected the entire nation, people were running, walking,
biking and, generally speaking, turning to exercise in a
big way. There was an increase in YMCA memberships
in the country. Attendance at major league sporting events
surpassed the previous year’s turnout. The number of
road races, trail runs and triathlons - for all levels of runners, walkers and multi-sport competitors - had increased,
and folks were “doing their thing.” It was exciting to see
major races such as the Boston, New York and Chicago
marathons with an abundance of entrants. It was equally
impressive to see our local races doing very well. Almost
all of our events displayed an upward trend in participants
and during most weekends the Striders were supporting
one or more races throughout Hampton Roads with rental
equipment and personnel. We continued to be blessed with
exceptional volunteer support for most club events. A new
van had been approved for purchase, as well as four new
time machines, and a newly designed Striders race singlet
was debuted. Membership was up (it peaked in August at
1,647) and was enjoying sporadic growth. The club was
financially solvent (over $300K at year’s end) and good
times were the order of the day.

The following Tidewater Striders were officially appointed at the January Board of Director’s meeting:
Jean Phelan – President (also Banquet)
Rich Hildreth – Vice President (also Adopt-A-Highway and Volunteer)
Sharon Rodier – Secretary (also Awards and Triathlon)
Dan Edwards – Treasurer (also Budget, Scholarship
and Youth Programs)
The Service Directory of The Rundown listed the following additional Board members:
Amiele Barakey
Cindy Williams and Heidi Sleasman – Walking
Tommy Neeson – Web Site
Steve Speirs – Web Site Manager
At the January Board of Director’s meeting, Mel Williams
commented that the Board needed to discuss the “Strider
of the Decade” award. This award had been given out in
previous decades, but not since the early 2000’s. Sharon
Rodier (Board secretary) reviewed the Awards Policy and
Procedures and could not find reference to this award.
After much discussion, the Board decided that the award
would not be presented. With the advent of the Striders
Hall of Fame, the Board felt that the decade award was no
longer needed.

of military veterans and their families through running
events, announced the dates of November 11-13, 2011
for the Inaugural Exposition, Half Marathon, relays and
family runs. The City of Norfolk would co-sponsor the
event and the partnership that was established agreed to
a five year (through 2015) venture. The Tidewater Striders would provide support in the form of advisors/chair
positions to the FMI staff leadership. The advisors were
comprised of Board Members Dan Edwards (finish line)
and Dave Harrah (local public relations and awards), and
Strider member Susan Snead (corporate advertising and
sign ups). Dave Harrah would act as “the go-between liaison” passing critical information from the FMI staff to
the Striders, and vice versa, for many planning issues. Additionally, logistics support would be provided by other
members of the club to include critical water stop planning
(Bee and Goody Tyler), assistance at the race exposition
and articles and notes in The Rundown. The Striders entered and won the team organizational competition, which
is covered in the Running section of this history.
In May, the RRCA National Convention was held in Fredericksburg, Virginia with over 300 attendees. Strider members in attendance were Club President, Jean Phelan, and
Board of Directors, Deb Sommer and Dan Edwards; and
members Sam Wittenberg, Mel Williams, and Bee and
Goody Tyler.
At the Strider picnic, in August, the general membership
voted on a motion previously passed by the Board of Directors to commence “electronic voting” for the Board of
Directors’ elections. The Board’s decision to change the
bylaws to switch to electronic voting proved to be a huge
success. With over 800 people voting, this was, by far,
twice the number of voters from previous elections. Making this happen was mainly a result of two key Striders:
Dan Edwards for implementation and Steve Speirs for online support.
In the November Rundown, President Jean Phelan reported
that “The club has lost four races, two of which are large
events (CHKD & Santa Shuffle). These events want Dchip timing (disposable chips, and start and finish times).
With the loss of Santa Shuffle as a Strider event we need to
let our Grand Prix participants know that it is not an option
to earn volunteer points at this race for 2011.”
It was announced in the December Rundown that “The
Tidewater Striders are excited to announce that the Striders Board of Directors has authorized the club to assume
production of the Breezy Point Triathlon. This action will
enable the Striders to support the large multi-sport membership in the club. The 2012 sprint distance event is confirmed at Naval Station Norfolk for Sunday, June 3rd.
Betty Virok, who stepped down as Race Director after 20
years, will remain available as a consultant to the event.
Brian Sagedy will become the Race Director.”
Newsletter
The Rundown continued to impress its many readers with,
typically, forty plus pages chock full of everything dealing
with “striderism,” be it running, walking, multi-sport, nutrition, recipes, club stories and so much more. The editor,
Ada Lester, continued to be the principal “put it together”
subject matter expert and, as in previous years, provided
the best in composition and photography support.
The “Athlete’s Kitchen” (copyright Nancy Clark) was a
popular read with articles such as news from the American Dietetic Association; supermarket shopping (decisions and dilemmas); diarrhea (a stinky topic); when food
has too much power over you; carbs, protein, and performance; food cravings and sugar addictions; 2011 sports
- 195 -
nutrition news; why weight loss is so hard; and gluten-free
sports diets.
The “Recipe Corner,” written by Sheila Bailey, RD-Nutritionist, provided some tasty recommendations in the form
of “Seashore’s Healthy Mashed Potatoes,” “Julia’s Veggie
Quiche Cups,” “refried beans,” and much more.
The “Strider Profile” gave us some insight about active
club members. Marie Price (a member since 2008 and a
Grand Prix winner) was featured in February. Todd and
April Eveland (also members since 2008 and each a Grand
Prix winner) were honored in May. Dan Neuland (Triathlete) was featured in August, Carla Serex (Triathlete and
distance runner) in September, and Jack Moriarty (Master runner) in October. Sam Wittenberg, a local physician,
was spotlighted in November and Jon Leiding (Grand Prix
winner) in December.
A fantastic full-page article was featured in the August
issue addressing “Rules of the Road: Race Etiquette for
Runners” by Miss Road Manners, Freddi Carlip, former
RRCA President. The article talked about lining up at a
road race starting line, acceptable “manners” while on the
course and approaching the finish line. A good read!

Walking
There was a new rule for 2011. For this particular year,
those interested in being a part of the “Tidewater Striders Walking and Participation Grand Prix” had to declare
their intentions to participate to the Walking Committee
Co-Chair, Steve Durant, before doing their first Walking
Grand Prix (WGP) race. All walkers would still compete
in a minimum of six events and judge a minimum of three
Grand Prix races to be eligible for awards. Failure to declare would result in no points being awarded.
As the year began, many of the Tidewater Strider Walkers set their sights on competing in several of the 21 local races that made up the 2011 Walking Grand Prix race
series. Throughout the year, many of the walkers would
compete in other local and national races in addition to the
Grand Prix.
The 2011 Walkers Grand Prix included:
• Hair of The Dog 5K
• Distance Series 10K, 20K, 25K and 30K
• Suffolk YMCA 5K
• Wachapreague 7.7 Mile
Teams which competed during the year included:
• Half Marathon Women (Team A): Linda Janssen, Rebecca Garson and Debra Hovatter
• Half Marathon Women (Team B): Judy Paschall, Cindy
Williams and Kathy Nash
• Marathon/50K: Lori Sherwood, Pat Thomas and Tom
Gerhardt
• Tidewater Striders Men Team: William Lipford, Steve
Durant and Bill Spruill
The following highlights are not all inclusive of the Walkers’ great accomplishments, but are provided to give the
reader an idea of how well this dynamic group performed:
• On Sunday, February 13th, Tidewater Strider Steve Shapiro completed the Birmingham, Alabama Mercedes
Marathon in a time of 5:35:10. His successful completion of the race made him eligible for membership
in the “Marathon Maniacs Club.” This national club
accepts individuals who have successfully completed
three marathons or races of greater distances, within a
90 day period. Steve completed the Outer Banks Marathon and the Seashore Nature Trail 50K (December
2010) and the Birmingham Marathon within the allotted time period.
• Lori Sherwood completed the Bataan Memorial Death
March Marathon, at White Sands Missile Range, New
Mexico, to claim her 26th state marathon and completing her quest for membership in the 50 States Marathon
Club. On August 21st, she would complete her 27th, at
the Leading Ladies Marathon in South Dakota.
• At the Dismal Swamp Stomp (WGP), on April 16th,

tember 10, Hartley Dewey and Steve Durant were the cohosts for a Seaman-Salvage Race Walking Clinic of Excellence. Ten other Striders attended the clinic and a total
of 22 racewalkers ranging in age from pre-teen to 77, and
hailing from Virginia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina,
attended.
The Walking Grand Prix award winners are listed in the
Awards section of this history.
Multi-Sport
For the 2011 Multi-Sport Series, each Strider member
needed to complete three of the Multi-Sport Grand Prix
events in order to be eligible for an award at the Awards
Banquet (held in early 2012). This was a new change in
the procedures and would allow the coordinator to concentrate on those individuals planning on participating in
at least three of the events.
The 2011 Multi-Sport Grand Prix schedule events were
the:
• Virginia Duathlon (Surrey)
• Smithfield Triathlon (Smithfield)
• Kinetic Half (Spotsylvania)
• Kinetic Sprint (Spotsylvania)
• Breezy Point Triathlon (Norfolk)

Sprint. Photo courtesy of TriDuo.com
• Old Point Triathlon (Hampton)
• Colonial Beach Sprint Triathlon (Colonial Beach)
• During May, Tidewater Strider Walkers competed in
the 2011 Virginia Senior Games in Richmond. For
this particular competition, “senior” was considered
50 years of age and older. In the 5K racewalk, Linda
Janssen placed 1st in women 50-54 years of age with a
fast 34:59. Steve Durant took 1st in male 70-74 with a
blistering 36:18. In the 1500 Meter racewalk, Tom Gerhardt took 1st in the male 44-59 age group with a 9:46,
Steve Durant took 1st in the male 70-74 age group with
a 10:13 and Buddy Levitin took the 1st place title in the
male 75-79 in 12:06.
• During the summer, Heidi Sleasman replaced Cindy
Williams on the Walking Committee and as editor of
the bi-weekly emailed “Walkers Bullet News”.
• Tidewater Strider Walker Rebecca Garson represented
the USA in the women’s 45-49 age group in both the
10K and 20K racewalk events at the 2011 World Masters Athletics Championships held in Sacramento, California, from July 6-17. She was the third USA finisher
in both events. This placed her on the USA Team which
won the Gold Medal in both events. Her 10K time was
1:05 and her 20K time was 2:16.
It is quite evident that over the past decade, the walkers
had achieved their rightful recognition. Participation and
the number of events had tripled. During the week of Sep-
• Colonial Beach International Triathlon (Colonial
Beach)
• Allen Stone Run-Swim-Run (Virginia Beach)
• Patriot’s Half (Williamsburg)
• Outer Banks Half Ironman (Manteo NC)
• Outer Banks Sprint and Olympic Triathlon (Manteo
NC)
• Patriot’s Sprint (Williamsburg)
• Sandman Triathlon (Virginia Beach)
Winning times for these events are not represented here,
but award winners for the Grand Prix Series are listed in
the Awards section of this history. Of special note, Carole
Bachman finished her very 1st triathlon (Smithfield Sprint
Tri) at age 52 during 2011. That is impressive!
Youth
New Energy continued to be the youth focal point, with
training sites running (literally) in Norfolk, Virginia Beach
and Suffolk. It was not uncommon to see the classic blue
New Energy singlet at almost all Tidewater Strider events.
Under the leadership of Angelo Celesia and his wife, Sherry, New Energy enjoyed another year of greatness. As of
- 199 -
the male crown and Amy Chalmers ran a nice 6:32 for
top female honors.
March 21st, 138 youth runners had signed up between the
sites.
During the month of May, five of the “distance runners”
in New Energy qualified for the 800 and 1600 Meter races
at the Virginia Beach Middle School City Championships
with some nice results. For the girls, 7th grader Diana
Chalmers won the 1600 with a 5:34. Right behind her was
her 6th grade sister, Amy, at a nice 5:35. On the boy’s side,
7th grader Travis Redmond ran a PR 5:19 for a respectable
6th place in a very fast race.
The 2011 Youth Grand Prix series consisted of:
• Pembroke Meadows Elementary 1 Mile
• Christopher Farms Elementary 1 Mile
• Suffolk YMCA 1 Mile
• Independence Middle School 1 Mile
• St. John The Apostle Catholic School 1 Mile
• Eggleston Services 1 Mile
Diana Chalmers received a top eight finish at the AAU
Nationals, in July, at New Orleans. Her placement was in
the 3000 Meter event. Amy Chalmers ran an impressive
9th in the 3000.
• The Strider Mile
• Larchmont Elementary Rat Race 1 Mile
• All American Beach Ford 1 Mile
New Energy runner Thomas Amabile turned in an All
South Team (top 25) performance at the Footlocker South
Cross Country Championships.
• Alanton Elementary School 1 Mile
• Turkey Trot 1 Mile
Not all Youth Grand Prix races (YGP) were covered in The
Rundown; however, the following is provided on some of
the key events for 2011:
• The first New Energy race of the season, at Pembroke
Meadows 1 Mile (YGP), was an awesome start to the
season. Thirteen-year-old Thomas Amabile finished 2nd
overall in an outstanding 5:35, behind the adult winner.
On the girls’ side, it was a clean sweep for New Energy
with Diana Chalmers clocking a sub-6 at 5:54. Second
and 3rd place also went to Striders youth runners Madeline Woods and Amy Chalmers.
• At the Christopher Farms 1.5 Mile (YGP) race, on
April 10th, Travis Redmond ran a great 8:36 and Diana
Chalmers ran an impressive 8:51.
• In March, New Energy was at the Shamrock weekend
in force with some great performances by our youth. In
the 1 Mile race, Madeline Woods placed 1st overall girl
and in the 8K race, sisters Amy and Diana Chalmers
both placed 1st in their age group and amongst the top
25 female finishers.
• The Suffolk YMCA 1 Mile (YGP), on April 23rd, saw
Joseph Ramsawh run a 6:11 to take the male title and
Diana Chalmers continue her road race domination
with an excellent 6:23 for top female honors.
• At the Independence 1 Mile (YGP), Travis Redmond
impressed with a 5:32 for the male youth crown and
Madison Keough topped the female field in 6:08.
• The Thoroughgood 1 Mile had some great New Energy
times, with Joseph Ramsawh running a nice 5:28. Diana Chalmers again took top female with a 5:44 and her
sister, Amy, ran a 5:56.
• At the St. John The Apostle Catholic School 1 Mile
(YGP) run, Hunter Quigley ran an outstanding 5:58 for
In the December Rundown, lead New Energy coach Angelo Celesia announced the award of an RRCA Grant to
the club. “On behalf of the RRCA, congratulations on being selected to receive a Kids Run the Nation grant! We
(RRCA) received 64 applications this year, and while every program was deserving of a grant, we felt your program was one of the ones that best matched the criteria set
for by the Kids Run the Nation guidelines. William Dyson,
Program Coordinator, Road Runners Club of America.”
Awards
The annual awards banquet (for the 2010 award season)
was held on February 26th, at the Fort Story Cape Henry
Beach Club. Regrettably, it would be the last one held at
this location. The awards for 2011 would be held at the
Norfolk Yacht Club in early 2012. The evening’s headline ceremony was the induction of the very first class of
the Tidewater Striders Hall of Fame. Inducted were 11
“legends” in the club, all well-known (some, even nationally) for their individual acts of athletic performances and
achievements. The recipients of this prestigious honor
included Dan Edwards, Bee McLeod, Dave McDonald,
Charlie George, Mel Williams, Rick and Sharon Brown,
Randy Cook, Cokey Daman, Jerry Bocrie and Ray Ochs.
Their contributions can be found in the March 2011 edition of The Rundown.
As if one Hall of Fame award was not enough, Bee
McLeod, past President of the Striders was inducted five
weeks later (April 2nd) as a member of the 13th Annual
Hall of Fame for Notre Dame High School, in New Jersey.
She was one of nine Notre Dame Graduates and one faculty member recognized for contributions to their respective
professions, communities, schools and churches. The ceremony was conducted in Princeton Junction, New Jersey.

Informal weekday training runs would continue to be popular with such events being sponsored by Running Etc.

Landing State Park and Final Kick Sports.
A lot of folks skip over Runner’s World advertisements,
but Jeanne Kruger-Williams had a sharp eye on the February issue. One of the local runners who ran in the Georgia
Marathon was featured in an advertisement, “Heroes are
made here.” The advertisement carried a full-page photo
of our local hometown hero, Michele Smith-Harden, arms
raised in a victory celebration with her ever-present smile
and outfitted in her classic ballerina tutu. The Georgia
Marathon was one of her state requirements to qualify for
membership in the elite 50 States Marathon club. What an
inspiration!
In May, The Rundown reported the passing of Tidewater Strider Dennis Bohlander, on March 22nd, as a result
of complications from Multiple Sclerosis. Dennis was a
Strider from the mid-seventies until the mid-nineties. He
was one of the top runners in the area up until being diagnosed with MS, in 1987. Dennis and his wife, Susie, also
an elite runner, were a familiar sight at many local runs
and events.

PLAN TO JOIN the Tidewater Striders' New Energy Youth 2013 Running Team
New Energy is an informal youth group training together to improve their times in road races as well as their
performance in track and field and cross-country events sanctioned by the USA Track and Field (USATF)
and AAU. Motivations vary from those who simply enjoy running, to those who are goal oriented and
recognize the need to train in order to perform well in races. With its group approach to running practices,
New Energy provides a fun, sociable forum for running preparation and development.
New Energy welcomes all youth runners, ages 6-16, regardless of ability. Practices are informal, and
participants are encouraged to attend as many as possible. Runners must have a good pair of running
shoes to avoid injuries. Uniforms (singlet and shorts) and Warm ups ( Hoodie and Pants) can be purchased,
but are optional. Membership in the Tidewater Striders is required by the third practice in order to
participate in sessions and compete on a team basis in Track and Relay teams. The cost is $12.00 per year
or $18.00 for two years. The Team participates in road races held in the Tidewater area, which are part of
the Youth Grand Prix 1-mile series and are sponsored by local organizations such as school PTAs. Check
race flyers for specific information by visiting www.tidewaterstriders.com . A New Energy Team race
schedule will be part of the program and can be found under ‘Youth Programs’ on our Web Site.
Coaching is provided by volunteers who are Tidewater Striders members. Again this year, Angelo Celesia
will provide leadership for training. Other running enthusiasts/parents will also assist.
New Energy provides youth runners and their families an enriching environment which can be a building
block to the youth runners' future. In the past, New Energy runners attended National Cross Country and
Track and Field Championships around the Country. Many previous New Energy runners are currently
participating with high school and college teams where they have excelled in Cross Country, Indoor and
Outdoor Track and Field with All State and National recognition. New Energy has produced numerous
All-American medalists, State Champs and one National Champion in Cross Country.
The New Energy Team practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5-6 p.m., at Mt. Trashmore
(Kid's Cove area facing South Blvd.), beginning Thursday March 3, 2013. Visit the Striders Web Site and
look under ‘Youth Programs’ for a complete training and racing calendar.
