S T V I N C E N T F E R R E R 2 0 1 4 Page 2 St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. From The Pastor The Exaltet is the first acclamation of Easter joy. It shouts the rejoicing of all creation in the liberation of all life in the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. More than an excited shouting of praise, the Resurrection of Jesus changes everything. Every life, every element of creation is now different as Jesus has burst forth from the tomb exploding into all that is. More than the singular life of Jesus being raised, the Resurrection of Jesus becomes the glorification of all matter. With the Resurrection, Jesus, the human-divine one has entered every particle of creation. The disorder of creation caused by sin and death is now reconciled to the Creator. Jesus has broken the chains of sin and death by going through the experience of sin and death. Divine love enfleshed in the person of Jesus has gone to the depths of human disorder as well as the deception of all evil and triumphed in the truth of love. No longer slaves to sin and death, we are now free to live lives noticeably marked by love. As the Exaltet proceeds, it acclaims ‘what good would life have been to us had Christ not risen from the dead? It is a pertinent question that can open us to the realization of gratitude that should be ours in this redemptive work. Who would you or I be without the freedom and peace of forgiveness and reconciliation with God? How would I know myself as a person of love and virtue in the grace of the Holy Spirit had Christ not defeated the lie of sin with the truth of love? How would I know the meaning of mercy for myself and in my relationships with others? Where would the world be without the influence and presence of the Risen Christ now present in the Holy Spirit? The Resurrection of Jesus has given us the capacity to live with the inevitable tension of sin in our lives and the lives of others. As we well know, the rising of Jesus did not make life to be ‘happily ever after’. We still live with the diminishments of human sin and all the consequences of that sin. Sometimes the consequences are small, like hurt feelings or possible good lost. Other times the consequences are globally tragic, like war, genocide, abject poverty and other grave social ills. Yet, in the Resurrection we have a new power and wisdom to face such challenges with the surpassing hope in the promises of divine wholeness. We cannot sugar coat the tragedies of this world, but in the faith and promise of the Resurrection we can move forward in the work of justice and mercy with full confidence that our efforts are joined to the efforts and flow of divine love. We have the courage and the identity to act in love because of the reconciliation and communion we share with the Lord Jesus now present in the Holy Spirit. Despite our own lessor nature to judge, criticize, and act only for selfenrichment, we are more deeply drawn to the higher nature of the Spirit within. No longer will our conscience allow us to sit idly by as human persons are oppressed with violence, starving through abject poverty, or simply ignored by the selfishness of others. Now the Spirit within will disturb our inner compass so that we may act in the right judgment of the redemption we have so graciously been given. This is the life process of conversion that we learn day by day through the blessing of letting go of self and spending ourselves for the sake of others. The flow of divine love is now complete and inclusive of all that is. The fullness of the Father’s love, all that the Father is has flowed into Jesus. The love of the Father has flowed through Jesus into and upon all creation. Love flowing from the Father into the Son, into the Spirit now flows into you and me. We now share in the communion of the divine life of God that flows endlessly into us. The dignity and value of every human life is seen in the life of Jesus. His life also shows us what is possible in our lives when we surrender to self-giving love. So secure was Jesus of the unending love of the Father that he could confidently surrender his life for our sake knowing the Father would not fail Him. The Passion of Jesus was his experience of being separated from the Father by taking on the sin of all humanity. That was the action of redemption. The one who did not know sin became sin that we might know the righteousness of God. This means that without sinning, Jesus took upon himself the experience of separation from the Father that we feel when we sin; multiplied by all the sin in the world. This was the cry of abandonment, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me’. Jesus was not forsaken. He was holding and carrying the weight of all sin so as to offer it to the Father in a cosmic act of forgiveness and reconciliation. Ever-present to the Son, the Father accepts the sacrifice of the Son on our behalf. Now dead to sin, having broken its power to separate, Jesus is raised to new life in the power of the Spirit flowing into him from the Father. As for Jesus so for us; what flows from the Father to Jesus to the Spirit now flows into you and me. The life of the Resurrection is our glorification with Jesus into the life of the Father. Stirred with profound gratitude, praise, and adoration, let us joyfully shout the Alleluia of our Resurrection from sin to forgiveness, from fear and doubt to joy and secure freedom in the love of Jesus our Savior and King. The students each made two bowls, one to sell at the event in February and one to take home to remember experience. This is one of Gleaner’s Kids Helping Kids activities which helps crease awareness in our young people about the hunger crisis faced by many families in the Detroit Metro area. St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Community Evangelization: Evangelization’s Purpose is Interior Change Through our baptism we are called to a new life in Christ. Each life experience gives us an opportunity to meet Christ in the moment. Each encounter with the Lord draws us into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ--a conversion that equals falling in love with our Savior over and over again. "The purpose of evangelization is therefore precisely this interior change, and if it had to be expressed in one sentence the best way of stating it would be to say that the Church evangelizes when she seeks to convert, solely through the divine power of the message she proclaims, both the personal and collective consciences of people, the activities in which they engage, and the lives and concrete milieu which are theirs."
