Celebrations of Independence!

July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the
tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and
the American Revolution (1775-83).
In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence
from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of
independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of
Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson.
In the pre-Revolutionary years, colonists had held annual celebrations of the
king’s birthday, which traditionally included the ringing of bells, bonfires, processions and speechmaking. By contrast, during the summer of 1776 some
colonists celebrated the birth of independence by holding mock funerals for
King George III, as a way of symbolizing the end of the monarchy’s hold on
America and the triumph of liberty. Festivities including concerts, bonfires,
parades and the firing of cannons and muskets usually accompanied the first
public readings of the Declaration of Independence, beginning immediately
after its adoption. Philadelphia held the first annual commemoration of independence on July 4, 1777, while Congress was still occupied with the ongoing war. George Washington issued double rations of rum to all his soldiers to
mark the anniversary of independence in 1778, and in 1781, several months
before the key American victory at Yorktown, Massachusetts became the first
state to make July 4th an official state holiday.

HELP WANTED:
The Village of Cedar Rock is seeking a
volunteer to assist with taking over
management of our Directory.
In general, this would involve creating
and submitting a mass survey to collect household data from our existing
residents and to new residents as they
move in, then documenting the results
in a spreadsheet to be submitted on a
monthly basis to the Village’s Council.
This Directory would also be made
available (in print) to all Village residents on an annual basis.

Cedar Rock Garden Club will begin its 2016-2017 season on September 6, 2016 @ 10:30 a.m. in the Cedar Rock Country Club Fireplace Room. Presentation will be "Six Steps to a Beautiful Room,
or How to keep Your Houseplants Alive - a surefire method!" Judy
Edwards, Caldwell County Master Gardener & CRGC Horticulturist
and Cindy Story, President of CRGC will present a simplified version of Jon Carloftis' lectures on houseplant survival.
A member and prospective member social begins at 10:30, with
the presentation beginning at 11:15.
Lunch , prepared by Chef Michael Foreman will be served around
noon: cost is $15.all inclusive.
Door prizes will be given at the end of the meeting. Yearly dues are
$15.00 per year.
Check out or Village median- the garden club has worked feverishly to present a colorful, sustainable, pollinator friendly and drought
tolerant native species garden area. Our goals are to continue to
improve the Village common areas, entertain a Village plant swap/
sale in the spring . We will be co-directors of the Flower and
Plant Competition at the Caldwell Agricultural Fair. We support
The Women's Shelter's May sale with seed and plant contributions,
and partner with Caldwell County Master Gardeners in several endeavors including the Downtown Bloom Boost each May.

In follow up to last month’s shout out to the Class of 2016, Mariah Parsons, daughter of
Matthew and Marla Parsons graduated in June and was accepted to SCAD Savannah College of Art and Design. She will be pursuing a BFA with a concentration in animation. She did the illustrations for a children's book that was recently published and plans
for a second one soon. Spencer the Poodle is the first book of the series. The next is
Katie Mae the Dorkie Yorkie and possibly more by the same author. Congrats, Mariah!

Welcome neighbors, Neal and Cheryl Triplett! They live in Jeanne Baker's former
house at 2786 Lakeview Drive. “Neal and I just retired and are excited to make this house
our forever home! Neal is retired from the Air Force and Civil Service and I retired from
Sumter School District as the Director of Elementary Instructional Technology. We can't
wait to become involved in the Lenoir community.”

Dalia Sanchez and Suzie Hurtado have also recently moved in to the former Lawing
home at the corner of Rockwood Dr. and Cedar Rock Estates Drive. Suzie’s children are
Anthony and Maribel.

Meetings are held on every
3rd Tuesday of the month @
CRCC 5:00 PM.
Residents of the Village of
Cedar Rock may attend.
We also wish to congratulate Pam Mayberry on the arrival of her granddaughter! Pam’s daughter, Erin, gave birth to Gracelynn Belle on June 11,
2016. Gracelynn weighed 6 lbs., 3 oz.
