This revolution, “The Bonzer Experience”, is about evolution: evolving ones thoughts, experiences and consciousness. It’s about dynamic changes that produce quantum shifts in understanding and performance. ALPHA OMEGA The Alpha Omega is The Legendary design in Malcolm’s history. It is a mix between a twin fish and a bonzer light vehicule. It is been first made in Autsralia at the end of the 70’s on the line of Mark Richards. This original shape is now available ! Best in 5’8" x 20 1/4" x 2 1/2" MINILIGHTVEHICULE The shape is a combination of one of our early 70’s Australia influenced nose templates, and the thumb tail that we use on the recent Mini Merk Model. The Bonzer 5 fin system has the feel of ‘the new’, but in reality will be 30 next year. This is an aspect of the timeless element we speak of.If you are looking to ride something that is extra short, is fast and rides equally well front side or backside; this might be your ticket. The average size for these bulbous babies is 5’4″ to 5’8″, but can handle a few inches in either direction. The overall dimensions are approximately 17 1/4″ in the nose, 21 1/4″ wide, and 16 1/4″ in the tail. LIGHT VEHICULE The word « Light » means speed and afst when talking about Malcolm’s bonzers. The « light vehicule » go at light speed! Originally made in Australia during year 1977, the « light vehicule » adds some concaves that follow the rail line and create a lot more speed and loose. BUMBLEBEE The Bumblebee is a replica of one of the shapes that Duncan and I rode between 1973 and 1978. It is designed to be ridden shorter than the average board. It has a wide arc tail, about 9 1/4″ to 10 1/4″ from corner to corner. Most people ride them the same size you would ride a “fish”. The Bumblebee rides equally well frontside and backside. It is very fast and works in a wide variety of waves. J.G. Bennett, describing Gurdjieff’s concept of evolution, states, “Evolution is the production of high level energy from a lower level source. This requires an apparatus of a different kind; for the “upgrading” of energy is improbable and cannot occur at all unless some high level energy is present. Life is an evolutionary process that goes against the direction of probability. The work by which Mankind is transformed is evolutionary.” This quote sums up in a nutshell, more than 30 years of some pretty intense work. In 1970 the 3 fin Bonzer represented a quantum leap in possibilities, and in late 1982 the 5 fin Bonzer presented another tremendous shift in design and performance potential. Maybe it was pure naiveté or a misguided sense of mission, but whatever it was, ever since the first wave we rode on a Bonzer we have felt an obligation to continue refining the design in order to keep possibilities open. We have wanted to give something back to surfing, which has so greatly enriched our lives. Against all probability the Bonzer stands here today as a symbol of the open-ended nature of evolutionary potential and performance capabilities. Thanks for checking in, Malcolm Campbell Duncan Campbell WELCOME IN THE THIRD & FIFTH DIMENSION Bonzer ! OCTAFISH The Octafish is “Not a Fish”. It looks a little like a fish but has a much wider range of performance. We have incorporated Max McDonald’s ‘elevated wing’ in this model. The wing enables the Octafish to get up and down the face of the wave more quickly and easily than a traditional fish. Powered by the Bonzer 5 fin system, this board works equally well frontside or backside and has a great all-around small to medium wave performance. MINI MERK The Mini Merk is basically designed to be a shorter, wider, and slighter thicker performance short board. It also has a little less entry/nose rocker than most contemporary short boards. It is reminiscent of the contemporary shortboards of the mid 80’s to early 90’s. It has a trim beak nose. There is also the option of thinning out the board to provide a bit more sensitivity. The Mini Merk provides really good all around shortboard performance with an extra bit of paddling. OCTA MERK The Octa Merk is a mix between the Octafish and the Mini Merk, the result is a high performance bonzer for small and medium waves. E-WING MERK The E-wing added tot the Mini Merk give it more maniability for a more modern surfing. The primary purpose of the Bonzer system is to efficiently organize water flow. We have done this by designing fin and bottom systems that work in a synergetic fashion in order to maximize the use of the energy that is created by the water passing through the tail area of the board. When you’re doing a turn, the water travels diagonally across the bottom of your board. The Bonzer side fins have a base totaling 9-3/4” on each side, and a maximum depth of only 2-3/4”. The angle, combined with the shallow depth of the fins, allows the fins to come in and out of the water with little resistance. This makes rail-to-rail transition much easier, which in turn allows you to keep your board on the rail with much less effort. This is our contemporary high performance Bonzer 5 fin. The name comes from the Malloy Brother’s film “Shelter”. We made some green boards that were ridden by Taylor Knox and Donovan Frankenreiter in the film. The Shelter board works well with swallow, squash or round tails. When getting your first Shelter board, or any contemporary Bonzer, it is best to order your favorite dimensions. This will allow you to more easily understand and feel what the Bonzer fins and bottom designs are doing. POD This board looks like a seed pod. It has a flat rocker and a wide nose and tail. It differs from the eggs in that the tail is wider than the nose. The Pod uses the 5 fin system which makes it a unique combination of Bonzer past and present. The flat rocker of the Pod makes it get up and go in small weak waves. It also works well in point type surf, but the flatter rocker can reduce its ability to change directions quickly in hollow waves. RUSS SHORT This was our most popular Bonzer shape during th mid to late 70’s. Russ Short, Duncan, Cliff Collinge and I all rode slight variations of this template during the time. This model was pushed to the limit in all types of waves and proved to be a very versatile high performance surfboard. The Russ Short model is used mostly with the 3 fin set up, but can incorporate the 5 fin system as well. The Russ Short model works well as a diamond, round or swallow tail. BONZER 3 Fin Versus BONZER 5 Fin The Bonzer 3 and 5 fin systems have very similar performance characteristics. photo: Elsa Girault CONTEMPORARY While turning, the fins on the inside rail are fairly vertical in the water, providing very refined edge control. As the water races across the bottom, the outside fins deflect it down and back through the tail. We have always looked at the water that escapes off the outside rail as unused energy. The combination of the Bonzer concaves and the long base of the side fins redirect far more water through the tail area than other designs. This maximizes the use of the force that is created during turns. The fins are essentially an extension of the concaves and, since water adheres to curved surfaces, there is very little disturbance as the water passes through the fin area. This dramatically reduces drag. Basically, we have tried to create surfboards that you can get more out of with less effort and energy input. It’s all about reducing entropy. The main difference is that the 5 fin setup is a bit quicker off the top, and is more maneuverable in the hook. This makes it more conducive to a contemporary approach to wave riding. The 3 or 5 fin systems can be used on any model. This will produce a slightly different feel in each, but inevitably, the shape of the board will determine more the way the board rides than the fin set up. For instance; putting the 5 fin setup on a Russ Short Model is not going to turn it into a contemporary shortboard. The position of the center fin can vary from surfer to surfer. We have included a basic guide within the description of each particular model. This is not etched in stone. Please feel free to experiment. A few general rules are: EGG The Bonzer egg has evolved from the eggs of the early 70’s. They combine the best attributes of past, present and future. We make a wide range of them using mostly the 5 fin set up. They will work in many types of waves. Bonzer eggs utilize round, diamond and squash tails. LONGBOARD EB5 GUN Our longboards are generally a more Guns are custom only for the high performance type of longboard. « connaisseurs » ! They are almost exclusively used with the 5 fin set up. We also incorporate Max McDonald’s ‘elevated wing’ to produce our EB5 Longboard. The elevated wing makes the board turn like a board that is 3″ to 6″ shorter. The EB5 is a very sophisticated high performance design. If you are having trouble finishing out turns and cutbacks, or are not getting up and down the face quickly enough, you should move your fin up approximately 1/8” to 1/4”. If you are digging rails, or catching rails in the front 18” to 24” during cutbacks, you should move your fin back approximately 1/8” to 1/4”. The leading edge of the the center fin usually ends up about even with the trailing edge (at the base) of the of side fins, plus or minus 1/4”. Please understand that these are basic guidelines, and are relative to where you stand on your board, and if you are standing in the right spot according to your style and the type of board you are riding..
