Ten Reasons for Hiring a Pro
Renovating your home should be a positive experience - free from worry and
stress. You should have full confidence in your renovator and know that you
are getting the best. That’s why you should choose a professional renovator.
1. From start to finish. A professional renovator will help you to put it all together from ideas to design, products to plans, and construction to completion.
2. Experienced advice. A professional renovator has the experience and knowledge
to help turn your ideas into great results. They listen, make suggestions, and look
for the best way of doing things.
3. Technical know-how. Professional renovators understand construction, how
to deal with challenges and problems, and how to improve the comfort of your
home.
4. Expert teamwork. Behind every professional renovator, there is a solid network of
staff, subtrades and suppliers ready to go to work for you.
5. A proven track record. Their business is an open book. You are invited to talk with
past customers, look at their previous work and check out their reputation.
6. Accurate pricing. No need to be concerned about low-ball costing, inferior work
or escalating prices once the job begins. Experienced renovators know what it
takes to do something right and how much it costs, and they’ll tell you upfront.
7. A written contract. Trust alone is not enough. Professionals back it up with a

voiding the manufacturers’ warranties on materials and products.

Why Choose a CHBA-NL Member?
If you are building a new home, renovating or making improvements and you are concerned
about quality and service, look to the members of the Canadian Home Builders’ AssociationNewfoundland and Labrador. All members have agreed to uphold professional standards
not only in the services they offer, but also the products. Businesses must abide by our
Code of Ethics and are vetted before they can become a member of this Association.
Home builder members also have access to all kinds of research and information related to
home building, and can keep up to date on technological advances, regulations, products
and materials, and financing and design. This means that they have the know-how to
provide the home buyer with the latest and the best in the market place.
If you are planning on making home improvements and are looking to find a professional
renovator, the CHBA-NL has implemented the RenoMark™ Program. RenoMark™
members have agreed to abide by the professional standards laid out in the RenoMark™
Code of Conduct such as: providing a detailed written contract for all jobs; offering a two
year warranty on all work; having coverage for workplace safety and employers’ liability;
carrying a $2 million liability insurance; and maintaining a professional level of knowledge
on current building codes and permits, just to name a few.

the first step in the right direction.
CHBA-NL Code of Ethics
Members shall comply with the National Building Code of Canada as a minimum standard
for construction and shall work towards its improvement in the interests of structural
sufficiency, safety, and health.
Members shall plan their sites and homes to conform to the principles of good community
planning.
Members shall deal justly with their employees, subcontractors, and suppliers.
Members shall deal honestly and fairly with their customers.
Members shall cooperate to extend the effectiveness of the Association by exchanging
information and experience, and encourage research on materials and techniques in order
to provide the best value for their customers.
Members shall uphold the principle of appropriate and adequate compensation for the
services they render.
Members shall avoid all conduct or practice detrimental to the home building industry, to the
Association, to the good name or reputation of any of its members, or to customers.
These responsibilities are freely and solemnly assumed as they form part of an obligation as
members.

MasterBuilder
Master Builder Certification is a province-wide program offering builders and
developers a special distinction for meeting strict standards, recognizing them
as home-building experts operating at the highest standards the industry has
to offer.
In order to earn Certification, a builder or developer must meet strict criteria
put in place by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association - Newfoundland and
Labrador (CHBA-NL):
1. Two-year membership with the CHBA-NL
2. In good standing with a recognized warranty program
3. Five years of residential construction experience
4. Provide a Letter of Solvency
5. Implements a recognized Quality Assurance Program
6. COR Certification
7. R-2000/ERS Certification
8. Red Seal or journeyperson(s), engineer, CET, or architect on staff
9. Undertakes annual professional development for staff
10. Completion of courses recommended by the CHBA-NL

CHBA-NL Certified Master Builder Members:
RenoMark
RenoMark™ is a nationally recognized program consisting of a searchable
database of renovators known for their professionalism and customer service.
It raises the bar by requiring renovation contractors to abide by the Canadian
Home Builders’ Association - NL’s (CHBA-NL) Code of Ethics and a renovationspecific Code of Conduct.
In order to qualify for RenoMark™ registration, a CHBA-NL member must:
1. Be a member in good standing of the CHBA-NL
2. Abide by the CHBA-NL Code of Ethics
3. Provide a detailed, written contract (including scope of work) for all
jobs
4. Offer a minimum two year warranty on all work (excludes minor
home repair)
5. Carry a minimum of $2 million liability insurance
6. Have coverage for workplace safety and employers’ liability and/or
work only with subcontractors who carry such coverage
7. Carry applicable licenses and permits
8. Have access to information, education, training and professional
development through membership in CHBA-NL
9. Maintain a safe and organized worksite
10. Return phone calls within two business days

R-2000
The R-2000 and EnerGuide for New Houses program helps customers
recognize the value of investment in energy efficiency. These programs
educate the builders and homebuyers about energy efficient products
that will help make cost effective upgrades in new home construction.
An R-2000 or EnerGuide for New Houses home can only receive
an energy rating if it has been built by trained and certified builder
and has been registered through Natural Resources Canada.
