I don't think I've stood on the deck once this summer and used the finer skills taught by the girls about sniffing the air, in my case for bushfire smoke They've enjoyed the cooler weather too, though it's meant less opportunities for beach outings. We even lit the fire a couple of times in January! We did have a lovely weekend babysitting Master 4 (going on 40!) and Miss 2, and the girls were on their best behaviour. One lady even told us as we left the dog beach that they were 'the best behaved dogs on the beach'... I'm sure she hadn't seen my eyes constantly swivelling 360° watching kids and dogs for the previous hour or so! Then there were the teams games of 'match'- 'Ninny' was on Jasper's team, and 'Lala' was on mine... I'm not sure who won. The committee are all in full tilt now on the downwards run towards the Easter Championship Shows. We think this celebration of our Club's 25th Anniversary will be pretty spectacular. Our house is in a bit of a state, but I keep promising that will be over in just a few more weeks! Lily's looking forward to an outing in the Veteran Parade at our show - and there are some other 'spring chickens' who'll also be strutting their stuff. I'm really looking forward to seeing them in their snow dusted russet suits... the Americans call them 'sugar faces' and it's a term I've started to use, I think it's lovely. Our oldest entry in the parade is over 15 years of age! Sometimes we get calls from people who have sought breed information and have found it difficult to get a response from some of the breeders on our list. They are very disappointed and some have felt the need to look further afield, sometimes needing more help in recognising the less committed breeders on the 'fringes' of the breed. We realise that sometimes the number of enquiries is almost overwhelming, but we hope people will get help from our members. Nina continues to keep us busy and in touch with the specialist vets - who we like very much, but are actually happy not to see regularly thanks Nina! We have been relieved to have quality pet insurance cover, but that's its own minefield lately. Next issue we hope to have an article on various considerations of finding appropriate cover. Finally, we are hugely excited with the excellent response to our 2014 Breed Health Survey. Further on in the newsletter is a summary of surveys submitted, we managed to spread the word quite a long way. We have a number of international submissions, and the information from those will be collated separately and also comparatively. But mostly, we are delighted with the number of responses from Australian Vizsla owners - thank you. We think this in no small part reflects the quality of the survey and its presentation. It was easy to fill in, both online and in hard copy. The online survey was quick and organised, a huge thank you to Karyn for this. Many very 'survey savvy' people commented on the quality and ease of the survey. Now begins the hard work of correlating and reporting the data gathered by Karyn (THANK YOU again!)- we hope to have some more feedback next issue. Once reported in the club's newsletter, this information will be posted on our website and also filtered back to those who helped us distribute the surveys. We are looking forward to seeing LOTS of you at the Easter Champ shows - we'll be flat out with two shows, but what a fabulous way to share our dogs with each other. See you there! 4 JAN | FEB 15 | VIZSLA VIEWS NEW MEMBERS Vivienne Jones New South Wales Jenny Neaves New South Wales Alison & Jacques Menil New South Wales Georgia & John Feller New South Wales Carlo Iacobucci Victoria Angela & Stuart Murchison Queensland Lydia Rorimpandey New South Wales Lana & Matthew Worthington New South Wales Marshal Kahn Queensland all joined up by John & Lesley Whyte Aniko Taylor Tasmania joined up by Fay Harris Damon Roddis New South Wales Juha Vuorinen New South Wales both joined up by Sarah Ward Anna Fitzgerald & Christabel EagleNew South Wales joined up by Lara Sedgmen Thanks to these breeders and their support, these new members now have access to the benefits and helpful information available with club membership. VIZSLA HISTORY from the UK DVDs DOGS FROM ANOTHER GENERATION Recently Sue Newman in the UK posted that she'd been able to have some old UK videos of Vizslas put onto DVD's and proceeds from sales would go to UK Vizsla welfare. She explains "The videos from Jean Winter have footage of Vizslas from shows in 1985 & 1986. The quality is very good, given that they are about 30 years old. The recordings were made by Larry Wilks and there is a commentary on each with the name of almost every dog and exhibitor (unfortunately, many of the exhibitors are no longer with us). I have had the recordings transferred to DVD professionally, and there are two DVD's - one has the very first Championship Show run by the Hungarian Vizsla Club, judged by Angela Boys in 1986. The other recording is of Margaret Holmes judging National Gundog in 1985, and there is also a short clip on this DVD of the BBC Crufts programme in 1985, showing the Gundog Group when Gay Gottlieb was shortlisted in the group with Russetmantle Paris." And so - the HVC NSW has purchased a small number of these sets of DVD's for the benefit of members. Only 6 sets are available - at a cost of $40 + p&h. Please contact Ros if you would like purchase this valuable archival footage. Welcome to the Club! We hope you will be able to come to our shows or functions or that you may wish to contribute to the club or newsletter. Some of you have already enjoyed a taste of our picnics - we hope you enjoyed the fun of multi Vizsla energy! Please feel free to contact your committee if they can be of any help, or if you have any questions. Remember your breeder and your club are here to help and give advice or, more often, simple reassurance! Both judges have their flights organised, their accommodation is booked, transportation organised and - they are excited! I'm sure that they'll tell you themselves after the show how they've looked forward to this opportunity to go over Australian dogs and meet us all. The 'after show' meet and greet will be lots of fun, and we are unbelievably grateful to Di & Tim Barnard for offering their well honed catering skills for this. Time will be tight on the day, given the positive signs of our entry numbers, so we'll all have to be ready set go... 9am sharp start, ready for classes and presentations and on to the afternoon after our very special Veterans Parade. Our Steward Brad Santas will keep everyone on their toes! The Leighton/Sargood garage has for quite some time looked like the HVC NSW warehouse, and now there is a show room developing in the house...! Trophies are being sorted, wrapped, labelled and organised into two lots. Rosettes are ordered from the US, engraving is being organised, and exhibitors packs are being made up. Sponsor dog food still will need to be collected and sorted closer to the show, plus we are just working out some final details on BIS trophies. We will have a very very limited amount of special merchandise - there has been so little interest shown that we had to decide not to make that financial commitment. We will have specially produced items as gifts for our judges and officials, plus the judge's travelling companions may like some extra items. If you have a 'change of heart' about those sorts of things, contact Ros immediately and we may be able to include some special orders... The special anniversary catalogues, NOT included with entries, will definitely be 'collectable'. With an historical representation of all our previous BIS winners, it will be appropriately bound and presented, so if you have not noticed it's a special order, and would like to place an order, you have just a short time to do that - until close of entries. All in all, we think we're all in for a great time. Just a reminder that this year there will be NO October specialty show - DogsNSW restrict us to only two specialty championship shows per club in one year, and our normal October show has been moved to Easter to present one special opportunity for interstaters, etc. For this year, there will also be NO obedience trial. Note - when forwarding entries by mail, please remember that there are two separate shows, so there is a 'first entry' for each show. (DogsNSW levies, etc). LIMITED OPPORTUNITY: If you are interested in any items of clothing - eg t-shirt, polo shirt, fleecy vest - featuring the commemorative 25th anniversary logo - ACT NOW! Contact Ros for information on pre-ordered options. Hello Vizslas! I'm so excited! My mum and dad are getting ready to drive me aaaaaaall the way from WA to visit my family and friends at the HVCNSW 25 th Anniversary Show. I can't wait to meet you all! We are following the coast from Perth through SA and Victoria to NSW. I would love to hear about your favourite spots for me to explore and camp along the way, especially around water. I like to do all the usual things that Vizslas like to do but I really really love to swim! So if you know any fun places my mum and dad can take me to play, eat or sleep, could you please let me know... email: vizslawa@me.com facebook: www.facebook.com/dolly.lombardoruss VIZSLA VIEWS | JAN | FEB 15 7 HUNGARIAN VIZSLA HEALTH SURVEY Thanks to everyone for their support of the HVCNSW Inc 2014 Hungarian Vizsla and Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Health Survey. DOGS ON SHOW SYDNEY DOG LOVERS SHOW Saturday 15th - Sunday 16th August 2015 The Committee has decided to make application to be included in Sydney Dog Lovers Show in August. This will be in place of our previous attendance at DogsNSW Dogs On Show. We may need some members to help us man the stand for some part of two days in August. Well socialised, but not perfect Vizslas required Please contact Ros if you might be interested in being part of this: rosleighton@bigpond.com • 02 4841 0282 8 Breed features in DogsNSW journal this month are Hungarian Vizsla and Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla. I may be biased, but I think that this is the finest cover photo on the journal for many years... Congratulations Lara Sedgmen for having her photo submission chosen by the DogsNSW journal editing committee. JAN | FEB 15 | VIZSLA VIEWS &RE-HOME UPDATE RESCUE Buckley We were given a heads up about a Vizsla who had been surrendered to a shelter on the Gold Coast, and we immediately made contact and offered our support in finding him a new home. Not all shelters will work co-operatively with breed rescue groups, but fortunately this was not the case on this occasion, and within 24 hours 8 year old Buckley was purchased and collected on our behalf by Donna who met Laura half way to save her some driving. He fitted in amazingly well with Laura's dogs, and was charming with her children. What a good boy! He did develop the 'usual' cough that the shelter rescues so often get, sometimes it's a full blown kennel cough, sometimes it can just be a response to their intranasal vaccine. He got over this quickly with some antibiotics from the vet, and was booked in for some 'tune up work'. It's always our aim to ensure that the senior dogs go to new homes in the best possible shape, so he had his teeth cleaned, and some lesions that had the potential to become troublesome were removed. Buckley has gone to live with Vivien & Glen, who are members, and who heard about him via a post on a Facebook page. They have been waiting for an appropriate rehome for a little while to keep Miss Tisza on her toes. They live not too far from Laura and it was an easy relocation for Buckley to a new home that was a very good fit. ≠ Costs for Buckley Purchase from AWL $150 Veterinary costs for cough, etc $192 Veterinary costs for lesions, dental check/clean, etc $822.92 Total$1164.92 It's clear to see that even with a dog in good condition, vet checks to ensure his immediate health before going to a new home are costly. We are grateful for the generous donations received in support of our welfare programme, so that, though we are always considered and responsible in assessing the real needs of these dogs, we don't need to ignore issues that can be sorted out. Thank you. Taz We had a call from Jenny who adopted Kislany, to say that there was a 'free to good home' 10 year old female in the Nowra area, and she was concerned that perhaps she might be inappropriately placed. Jenny loves Larni, and she has fitted in so well - she's enjoying having a Vizsla around the house again. So - she went to meet Taz, to see if she could fit in too. First day brought the following message - Hi Ros, just wanted to let you know that I picked Taz up yesterday & oh, what a beautiful girl. So far she & Larni are getting along fine wary of each other but that is all. She is in lovely condition & really looks much younger than ten, not a grey hair on her body but again like Larni, very long toenails which I will need to work on. One day I would like to bring them along to one of your 'picnics' but I don't know how they would go off lead once out in the open. Thankyou, Jenny. Thank YOU Jenny - for giving these old girls somewhere to enjoy their lives. I hope it's a good fit for you and the girls. Oszkar This 2½ year old neutered male had been rehomed by Jean and her daughter about a year earlier. However, Jean's daughter has been transferred overseas, Jean was waiting for joint replacement surgery and she and her husband were unable to provide Oszkar with what he needed. There is of course a month's trial period to ensure that it all works out as expected, but we feel pretty certain that Buckley has found a new family that love him for the rest of his life. Our thanks to all those members who donate to our welfare funds it means we don't have to think about whether or not we have adequate funds to help dogs like Buckley when the need arises. There are always some expenses associated with rescue dogs VIZSLA VIEWS | JAN | FEB 15 We put Vernon & Mary in touch. They are committed dog owners with close family who have also adopted an older Vizsla. It was a bit complicated in the end as Jean had a nasty fall and broke her leg, so the changeover happened in a bit of a rush. However, Oszkar has fitted in and is happily enjoying his third home, where he seems certain to stay. continued 9 RESCUE & RE-HOME UPDATE continued... Asha Asha's original owner was unable to cope with her at an early age, having underestimated the needs of a busy Vizsla with a young family, and some changes to their lives. She was rehomed to Susan & Pat, where she fitted in very well. At the end of last year they went along to the north coast Vizsla get together, but sent a photo of Asha having some rest time in winter from her 'job' Good girl Asha! I'm sure you've got the neighbourhood covered! Koda is now with Susan for the remainder of his life. Gatsby is so excited he can barely contain himself. So, sometimes it's not the 'perfect' ending, but it's still a very good one. And finally - Thanks Ros All went well A few tears from Hilary and the girls. Koda keeps looking to the last direction he saw them leave, though he seems very happy, well behaved. Coming when called makes it possible for him to be off lead here in North Sydney parks. He learnt to use the doggy door on Day 1, but I am yet to get him to use our back yard to toilet. He only goes in the park but I am sure he will come around He really is a sweet dog. A little reserved but getting more affectionate every day.Gatsby is happy, he may even have an extra spring in his step Thank you for all your help I think your tips on handover worked very well.I’ll let you know how he is going in 3 months or so Best wishes Sue Lilly Koda Koda's owner contacted us hoping to find a 'temporary' home for him, for an indefinite time or around 12 months while they were travelling. This is a very difficult thing to negotiate successfully. To have someone care for your dog as you would usually means that they have to love it as you would. To do this with a dog that is in your life for only a brief period is difficult... We put Hilary in touch with Susan - her second Vizsla, Gatsby, is now getting on in years, and she wanted another dog but couldn't consider a puppy. She also couldn't consider a 'temporary resident' with the uncertainty of time and then returning him to someone, but we put her in touch with Hilary to see how it went. In the end, Hilary decided she'd rather Koda went to Susan for the rest of his life than to risk a less caring home. Hi Ros A quick email on progress with Koda We have done a lot of walks together and Koda had a weekend sleep over. This was a good way of introducing him and helping Hilary accept us as a good home All went very well, he was comfortable with our house and came when called etc He was even a little affectionate. He greeted Gatsby like a long lost friend on our last walk together with Hilary He is quite reserved for a Vizsla I am looking forward to him moving in at the end of January or early February. Thanks again for your help, I’ll update after he settles in Regards Sue After a couple of months of meeting for walks with both dogs, sleep overs for Koda and some careful and lengthy consideration, 10 We are concerned sometimes to see the dogs that are listed by some welfare groups as 'Hungarian Vizsla' or Vizsla cross. We think it is a way in which to try to overcome the poor public image of some of the brown nosed bull breeds, and we completely understand that need. However, mostly we see that there is no way the dog is a Vizsla, nor probably even a Vizsla cross. Tom sent us a request to rehome his 'Wizzla' after being referred to us. Hello ! My name is Tom and got your email address from xxx and she said that you might be interested or can help me find a new home for Lilly a Hungarian Wizzl. She is ab a year and a half Very cute and nice temper We got her from the Rspca She is desexed and microchipped / heres s puc of her with our other dog Jac They have or are very good together ;/) Lilly to the left ! Tom It may not be clear in this reduced version of the photo, but Lily is clearly of Staffie origins and unfortunately, we were not in a position to help Tom, but we did suggest he go back to the RSPCA branch where they purchased her in the hope that they would stand by the dogs they have sold. Equally, sometimes we get rude and unnecessarily nasty emails from people, firstly asking for a rehome, then responding abusively when we say we don't normally rehome mixed breeds. Makes us all the more grateful for the fact that the vast majority of people are easy to deal with! In fact, we do sometimes manage to help Vizsla crosses, as in the next story. continued JAN | FEB 15 | VIZSLA VIEWS RESCUE & RE-HOME UPDATE continued... VALE CARMEN ADAMEK Red There are lots of 'unusual' requests related to rehoming Vizslas. At the end of last year, Lois had a call from a very caring owner of a Vizsla x Ridgeback. She explained that we don't really have the 'resources' to accommodate cross breeds, (see the next story), but she did mention the dog to me, saying it sounded like a really nice dog. It's almost impossible to believe that the very same night, a person in Queensland posted that they were looking for an older Vizsla, to get along with their current senior dog - who is a Vizsla x Ridgeback !! (though Sarah consistently referred to Jake as a 'Vizsla' ) The coincidence was spooky!! So, I contacted them and said...... All we did was put the two parties in touch with each other to talk about the possibilities. No prizes for guessing what happened. Of course the planets all lined up and it's a great outcome. Vanessa flew up to Queensland from Melbourne to meet Sarah and her family, and took Red with her. She did book a return flight for Red, just in case it didn't work out as planned. We had this update from Sarah a little later: Hi Ros It has all worked out really well and Red has fit into our family beautifully. She has bonded really well with our eldest Nathan and our old darling Vizsla Jake plays with her when he wants to. Red has definitely found her forever home with us. I have attached a couple of photos of her. She looks more Ridgeback than Jake but she is the sweetest little girl we could every wish for. Thanks for pairing us up with Vanessa. Regards Sarah Carmen's bright light shone on Lois and I when she adopted 6 year old Zippy in December, 2013; a boy from Victoria that Lois heard about. He'd been tied up to a fence and when he escaped, his owners decided they didn't really want him anyway. When Lois told me about him, I'd recently heard from the bright bubbly Carmen, whose good friends Carol & Paul had Roger the rehomed Vizsla, with whom Carmen had fallen hopelessly in love. But even that love didn't match the immediate special bond she had with Zippy when he went to her. Her story of collecting Zippy in 'Pearl the Peugeot' was a joy. And Zippy loved her right back - the photo says it all. Carmen had a battle to fight with cancer, and I'm saddened to say that she lost that battle this month. Zippy has been with Carol, Paul & Roger since Carmen was taken to hospital. He has fitted in - he and Roger are like old mates, and Zippy will live out his life with them. Thank you Carol & Paul. Farewell Carmen. VIZSLA VIEWS | JAN | FEB 15 11 REGISTRATION ROUND-UP 2013 For 2013, we have information on 69 Hungarian Vizsla litters (463 pups) having been registered by 37 breeders. Three were bred by first-time breeders. The most litters whelped in the calendar year by one prefix was 10. In comparison, in 2012 there were 76 registered litters (562 pups) produced by 43 breeders. Thirty dams whelped their first litter in 2013. One damwhelped twice within the calendar year. One dam whelped her seventh, and two others their fifth litters. The youngest dam was 1 year 7 months of age when her litter was whelped. The eldest dam was a couple of weeks shy of her eighth birthday. There were 44 different sires used in 2013; 11 of which sired their first litter. Seven dogs sired three or more litters, with the most frequently used sire in 2013 producing seven litters in the calendar year. One dog sired their 20th litter. The youngest sire wasjust under 1 year 5 months of age. Of the 69 litters 14 were repeat matings, with two being the fourth time a particular mating had been done, and one being the seventh time. In the past 5 years, 2356 Hungarian Vizsla pups have been registered in 341 litters. 115 different sires and 197 different dams have been used. One dog sired 19 litters (149 pups) in this time, with four other dogs siring ten or more litters. The seven most frequently used sires produced 24.6% of all Vizsla pups registered from 2009-2013. The use of the sires is not necessarily wide-spread. For example, one dog siring 10 litters in the 5 years was used over four different dams, the others being repeat matings (eg one bitch whelping 5 litters to him). Another sire although used for 14 litters was only used by one breeder. See the table for further details. Let me start by saying that what people think is dominance almost never is. In fact, out of the over 4,000 dogs that I have worked with in group classes and private lessons over the last 15 years, I have never seen a behavior that didn't have a more reasonable explanation than a quest for total domination. Aggression and dominance are not the same thing. They do not have the same meaning. Just because a dog has exhibited aggression does not mean it has anything to do with dominance. Fear. Frustration. Incomplete training. Learning history. The causes of every behavior problem I see. And, before your reply to this post with, "But you don't work with aggressive dogs," know that my practice is limited to fear and aggression. That's all I work with these days. Still, no dominance to be found. Fear. Frustration. Incomplete training. Learning history. Take a look at any behavior that you might consider to be dominance and then ask if any of those explanations might make more sense. • The dog at the dog park who growls at other dogs. Fear, not dominance. • The dog who doesn't "listen" when called. Incomplete training and learning history, not dominance. • The dog who snaps at the vet. Fear and learning history, not dominance. • The dog who lunges and barks at other dogs on-leash, but plays well with dogs in the dog park. Frustration and incomplete leash training, not dominance. • The dog who bolts out the front door and leads his family on a 45 minute chase through the neighborhood. Incomplete training and learning history, not dominance. I'm not dismissing the scientific concept of dominance entirely. However, it is very complex, with multiple definitions depending on who is defining it and what they apply it to. And if it comes from the mouth of a trainer using dominance to justify a particular training method or equipment, the definition is not even close to accurate and they're missing the signs of fear, frustration, or the fact that something has gone wrong in the training process. The most simplified and scientifically-accurate definition, as presented by Patricia McConnell, PhD, is "priority access to preferred resources." That's basically what it's about. Who gets first dibs. Now, who, with their bigger brain and opposable thumbs, has first dibs on things the dog wants, the dog or the human? Hint: Dogs don't have thumbs. That means, by a stroke of evolutionary luck, you already have priority access to everything, since your dog can't get food, water, toys, etc., without your thumbs...not to mention your debit card. You're ALREADY dominant. No need to jerk, roll, hang, poke, pinch, or shock the dog, just use those preferred resources wisely in exchange for good behavior (see prior post on Premack Principle). Dogs don't get to choose where they live or who they live with. They don't get to choose where they walk or even if they get outside for walks. They don't get to choose what you feed them or when. They don't get to choose whether or not you take them to the dog park or the beach. They don't get to choose what vet they see or what medical treatment they receive. They don't get to choose whether or not they accompany you on vacation or where they get boarded. They don't get to choose whether they live with you for the rest of their lives or get returned to the shelter. Their safety and survival is subject to our every whim. And we're obsessed with whether or not we're dominant??? Instead of worrying about whether your dog IS dominant, is BEING dominant, or THINKS he's dominant, focus on what your dog DOES. She growls at people who reach for her rawhide. She jumps on the counter when you're preparing food. Now, rather than try to punish out a dog's thoughts (a'la Harrison Bergeron - great short story, BTW), we can focus on teaching our dogs what we want them to do. That's where a training or behavior modification plan comes in. Dominance is just not a useful concept. It relies on assumptions about what a dog is thinking. You're never going to know what your dog is thinking (at least not until they invent the collars from "Up"...Squirrel!). Frankly, I'm not concerned with what a dog is thinking, I'm concerned with what they're doing. And, when they are relaxed and lying on a mat and looking at me in anticipation of something good instead of growling and lunging at visitors, I've already solved the problem without trying to read their thoughts. continued VIZSLA VIEWS | JAN | FEB 15 15 DOMINANCE continued... And, yes, that includes feral Malipits from working lines who were born under a full moon on Leap Year. Or Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and any other breed that anyone might want to claim have super special different brains and learn differently from every other species on the planet. Don't just take my word on the issue of dominance, here's information from people who study the behavior of dogs and wolves for a living: http://img2.timg.co.il/forums/1_139885255.pdf http://behavior.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/…/AVSAB_Dominance_Statem… http://4pawsu.com/alphawolf.pdf BUTS "But, what about dogs in the same household who fight? Isn't THAT dominance???" Again, that requires us to make assumptions about what the dogs are thinking, to assume that they are fighting for status in a hierarchy of their imagination. Usually, it's a complex combination of access to resources (including access to owner, sleeping areas, toys, bones, etc.) AND learning history. In other words, once fights start to happen, the dogs are living under a heightened level of stress and overly defensive, especially in situations or locations where fights happened before. This article accurately describes "status-related aggression." However, notice that the reference is is a small paragraph, not the basis of the entire article. Because there are many other reasons that dogs in the same household may begin to fight. http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/issues/13_4/features/Dog-Fighting-Behavior-Aggression_16214-1.html Entries close May 1, 2015 HUNGARIAN VIZSLA CLUB OF NSW RATG TRIAL Sunday May 17, 2015 commencing at 9am Venue: Blue Circle Grounds, Taylor Avenue, New Berrima Judge: Jenny Duncan Classes to be judged: Prizes: Entry Fees: CATALOGUES INCLUDED WITH FIRST ENTRY Vetting Time: Novice & Open 1st – 3rd Trophy & Sash; Qualifiers – Sash Members – $10 Non-members – $12 8:30-8:45am Entries close with the Trial Secretary Narelle Vale 247 Del Monte Place, COPACABANA NSW 2251 Mobile phone number – day of trial: 0419 612 674 Email: valesatcopa@gmail.com All remittances in favour of Hungarian Vizsla Club of NSW Inc RNSWCC Representative Sue Harlow No refreshments available on grounds Back to the Wombat Hill venue for 2015 - it has proven very suitable. We had this lovely note from Julia before Christmas. Hi Ros, I always jump to the “Rescue” stories first, and this month the story on Zippy & Carmen really touched me. There are some incredible people out there, and Carol & Paul qualify, and Carmen qualifies. If you in contact with them again, please let them know that whilst “thinking of you” is probably a useless thing, when a casserole, hug or plate of shortbreads would be more useful, it’s all I can offer as a) I don’t know them, and b) I live far away! I will be hoping the best possible for them all for the future, all things considered. And best wishes for a happy & successful 2015 to you & yours. Julia We have some newsletter 'share' arrangements with other Vizsla clubs, both here and internationally. It's nice to hear how some of those get shared around - this nice note from Stephanie Fischer, of the Vizsla Club of Long Island in the US. (Southside was a volume breeder situation where many dogs including a large number of Vizslas were rescued by authorities from appalling conditions. The VCLI were involved in this situation and the stories were overwhelming). Hi Ros, MaryK always shares your newsletters with me, as I am a big fan. Thank you for all the work you do to produce a fine newsletter. Your cover this year was great, and it was nice to see all your champions. Takes a bit of getting used to with the long tails. I am a head person, and there were quite a few nice ones. Below are my 3. Cliffy is my champion and Westminster entrant. L-R Cliffy 13 Jake 8 Molly 6 (Southside Rescue) Happy Holidays, Stephanie We were saddened to hear that Patsy & George had lost Scout, she was a lovely host when we had our tracking workshops at their property in Crookwell. Hi Ros, I have to let you know that Scout had to be put to sleep shortly after her 15th birthday in November. Of course I miss her very much. I still have a cross bred border collie rescue dog. Billy is 5 years old (they think) and has had a few owners before a friend of mine took him from Canberra Rescue. She is 85 and has arthritis in her hands so I had been exercising him with Scout for some time. She had to move into an aged care unit so I have taken him. As he has had some owners, none of whom had trained him to do anything, he is quite a challenge. He is just the opposite to Scout. My son comes up from Sydney a couple of days a week to help us with the sheep and when he arrives with his border collie I lose her for a few days as he and his truck immediately become the leader and I am relegated much lower down the pack. This makes training a little harder. We have just attended an 8 day obedience course at the local vets. It was a lot of fun. Things have changed a bit in training over the last 10 years. Billy graduated on the Thursday before Christmas. He did a beautiful recall but his on-lead work still need some more training. My New Year’s resolution is to take him to town every day to walk on lead to get him used to so many distractions. I must thank you for the coat that I bought for Scout. She wore it every night and some days from the day I got it. She would bark at me every night after her dinner and had to have it on. It was lovely and comfortable and fitted her so well. Hope you and your dogs had a Merry Christmas and have a very Happy New Year All the best to You and Wayne, Lily and Nina. Love seeing photos of them in the Vizsla News. Sailor got all she wanted from Santa and more! Those Hurtta cool coats were well received. They need a bit of getting used to apparently. We were out on a hot day, waiting for Nina to be finished at the Sydney specialist vet. We stopped for lunch at a Pittwater cafe, where Lily can sit at our table. She was panting and so we got the coat from the car, wet it and put it on her. Her face change almost immediately from some heavy panting to VERY tightly pursed lips and an expression that said 'there is WATER dripping near my feet!!' We discovered that look goes away if you take the coat off and wait for the dripping to stop.. and it's a very cool coat. And Zoltan & Dolly kept cool in their new coats! Our very special calendar gets rave reviews each year. Here are just a couple for the 2015 calendar: Hi Ros, Hi Ros, Just letting you know, arrived home tonight and the calendar has arrived!
