SUMMER YOUTH ENRICHMENT CAMPS 2015 CONTINUING EDUCATION Welcome to the wonderful world of youth programs at Northeastern State University! Summer Camps are listed in chronological order. We have included a checklist and Personal Camp Scheduler on the back of this booklet for your use. REGISTRATION Please call or come by the Continuing Education department to register, fill out waivers, and pay a $50 deposit. The deposit is due at the time of registration. Deposits are nonrefundable (unless NSU cancels the camp), but are transferable to another week of camp. Camp accounts must reflect a zero balance before the first day of camp. Campers will not be enrolled in a camp until payment has been received. Camps fill up quickly, so please get your waivers and payment to us as soon as possible. Please be thorough and complete when filling out forms. Complete information helps us ensure a positive learning and fun environment for your camper. No child will be allowed to participate in camps without a risk/medical waiver on file. REFUNDS Deposits are non-refundable (unless NSU cancels the camp), but are transferable to another week of camp. Students learn how to control characters, objects, as well as outcomes in your game. You will then increase the difficulty level and add more features. Graphic design further develops your game. Graphic animation topics will also be explored. Learn how to design your own version of PacMan and several others. This camp incorporates basic technical vocabulary. Students are encouraged to bring a flash drive so they can download their game at the end of the week and continue to play at home. *STUDENTS MUST HAVE AN EMAIL ADDRESS TO PARTICIPATE. Get ready for wacky gears, crazy cogs, Floppy Jalopies and Coggy Doggies! The camp will introduce young campers to the gears and mechanics of robotics using age appropriate material. Campers will also be introduced to software programming and curriculum for early childhood. Campers are required to bring a pillow and mat or sleeping bag. TO THE ROBOT At this camp, beginner robotics enthusiasts will have fun working with different robotic kits. Campers will work in small groups, or individually, to design functional remote control robots and create a friendly competition challenge. At the end of the week campers, will have an afternoon demonstration for their families. Fee includes all snacks, lunches, supplies, and a T-shirt. The Minecraft© game (set in our computer lab environment) will encourage social interaction with other campers while accomplishing set tasks in the S.T.E.M. and reading areas. Campers will design, build and explore robotics using science, technology, engineering and mathematics with special emphasis from the female perspective. Campers participate in games in a fun, learning environment. Campers need to wear shorts, T-shirts and tennis shoes every day of the camp. Campers need to bring a baseball glove. Campers need to bring a T-ball bat if they have one. We provide SPF 30 sunscreen, please send your child with their own if a certain type/SPF is preferred. We will provide lunch, bottled water and snacks every day. Campers are encouraged to bring a pillow, blanket, or sleeping mat for resting time each afternoon. On Friday, June 12, campers will be bussed to the Skatehouse where regular skates and one drink are provided. Campers will also go to Green Country Cinema where their movie ticket is provided. Campers will need to bring their own money to purchase anything extra at the Skatehouse and the movie theater. Dates: June 8-12 Time: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Instructor: Christy Janssen Age: 3-6 years old Drop off/Pick up location: NSU-Tahlequah Campus: Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse Fee: $150 ALL THINGS WATER CAMP Campers will spend the week enjoying fun in the sun. There will be multiple outdoor activities and obstacle courses that include water play. Campers need to wear shorts, T-shirts and tennis shoes every day of the camp. Campers need to bring a change of clothes, including a swimsuit and towel every day. We provide SPF 30 sunscreen, please send your child with their own if a certain type/SPF is preferred. We will provide lunch, bottled water and snacks every day. On Friday, June 12, campers will be bussed to the Skatehouse where regular skates and one drink are provided. Campers will also go to Green Country Cinema where their movie ticket is provided. Campers will need to bring their own money to purchase anything extra at the Skatehouse and the movie theater. Campers will be bussed to areas, such as the Illinois River and Lake Tenkiller to hike, bike and swim. When in town, campers will swim at the NSU Seminary Suites pool. Campers must know how to ride a bike. Helmet required, some bikes will be provided, however campers with appropriate bikes are encouraged to bring their own. Campers need to wear shorts, T-shirts and tennis shoes every day of the camp. Campers need to bring a swimsuit and towel every day. Participants will gain an understanding of world cultures by making masks, instruments, sculptures, puppets, paintings and learning folk songs from around the globe. Their work will be added to a web site titled “I Love Tahlequah.” Topics of the camp: • Picking a Subject Worth a Thousand Words •Building a Photo Journal Date: June 8-12 Time: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Instructor: Valera Ainsworth Age: 12-18 years old •To Crop or Not to Crop •Photo Editing • Story Building: A Beginning, Middle, and End Drop off/Pick up Location: Cherokee Arts Center, Tahlequah Fee: $69 JUNE 14-20 Full-Day Camps PIANO Designed for junior and senior high pianists at intermediate through advanced levels of performance. Daily classes include private lessons, development of individual artistry, theory/ musicianship, and elective classes, including ensemble music and beginning jazz improvisation. Recitals, topic classes, and master classes complete the curriculum. Practice time is available in the same facilities used by piano majors at the university. Audition Requirements On the first day, students play two contrasting pieces (at least one memorized) and sight-read easier short excerpts. This helps determine placement in lessons and classes. Repertoire is chosen based on the student’s ability and level of advancement. Dates: June 14-20 Time: 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. daily (Sunday afternoon only, Saturday 10 a.m. concert) Instructors: Dr. Ronald Chioldi, coordinator, NSU, Dr. Soohyun Yun, assistant professor of Music, Kennesaw State University, GA Dr. Andrea Isaacson, piano faculty, community music academy, NSU Age: 12-18 years old Drop off/Pick up location: NSU-Tahlequah Campus: Fine Arts Building Fee: $300 (housing and meals additional) JUNE 15-19 Full-Day Camps NSU FLUTE WORKSHOP The third annual Northeastern State University Flute Workshop in Tahlequah, Okla. is a five-day flute event featuring some of the nation’s finest flutists and pedagogues teaching repertoire classes, orchestral excerpts, piccolo, techniques clinics, daily warm-ups, and flute ensemble. This year’s guest artists include Sarah Jackson from the Los Angeles Philharmonic; Cynthia Ellis from the Pacific Symphony; and Patricia Surman, Yamaha Performing Artist and Artist Teacher of Flute at NSU. The class is open to university flutists, high school flutists, teachers, and amateurs. Daily concerts will feature teaching artists and members of the class. Participants will be playing in daily tone development, warm-up, and technique development class. Performers will be playing in two master classes. All students will play in a chamber ensemble and receive a 15-minute mini-lesson from Dr. Surman. Performer applications are due by May 1 and participant applications are due by May 15. Campers need to wear swimsuits, shorts, T-shirts and water shoes or tennis shoes every day of the camp. Campers are encouraged to bring a towel and lifejacket.
