Aeonium is a succulent evergreen subshrub
originating in the Canary Islands, grown in the
garden in temperate regions but as a house plant
or in containers in much of the United States.
Similar to Sempervivum, small rosettes of thick
fleshy leaves are formed around a larger central
rosette. Spoon-shaped bluish green leaves have
reddish margins and pale yellow flowers on
2’ stalks arise from the central rosettes in late
spring. Grows 18-24” tall. Prefers dryish soil
and dislikes humid, soggy conditions.
Plant 12” apart.
Kiwi Pinwheel
Delightful succulent rosettes that
measure 5” across have yellow
center leaves that are surrounded by
fruity green leaves with reddish-pink
margins. Yellow flowers bloom in
summer. In regions where it is winter
hardy, it will grow up to 2-3’ tall and
wide. Plant 12” apart.

Echeveria
Echeveria ‘Black
Prince’
Native to higher elevations of Mexico and Central America, there are over
150 species of Echeveria with many introduced to the gardening world. These
succulents are valued by gardeners and collectors for their variety and intensity
of foliage colors. Hardy to only zone 9 and, as xeric plants they require very
little moisture, so it is best to grow under cover in full sun or light shade in
the North East and Mid-Atlantic. Fleshy rosettes, mostly stemless, spread by
offsets much like Hens and Chicks (Sempervivum). Plant in well-drained soil
with plenty of organic matter.
‘Black Prince’ forms dark purplishblack rosettes that are 4-12” tall.
Each leaf within the ground-hugging
rosette is spade-shaped. Dark red
flowers on short stems appear in early
to late fall.
Plant 12” apart.

Dwarf Firecracker
Tiny rosettes about 1.5” tall and wide
have blue club-shaped leaves that
are hairy with a tuft of bristles on
the leaf tips. 6” tall flowering stems
hold nodding red and yellow blooms

sun. Slow to spread, offsets form free of
the mother rosette on succulent stems.
Native to desert regions in Mexico, it
requires very little moisture and is not
winter hardy in the Mid-Atlantic and
North East U.S. so it is best kept under
cover as a container plant. Star shaped
flowers are red and white.
