2015 ANNUAL REPORT BOWLING GREEN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE strategic initiatives VISION statement The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce is the driving force for South Central Kentucky’s business community. #01 MISSION statement We provide valuable services to our partners, advocate a positive business environment and stimulate economic development for South Central Kentucky. #02 VALUE statement Values are the standards that influence every aspect of our lives. SERVICE: We value a commitment to service and believe responsibility and duty are imperative to enrich the community. Annual Dinner attracted more than 600 of the area's top business leaders. The program included a celebration of another year of Chamber successes and honored dedicated volunteers. Board Chairmain Tommy Adams announced the 2015 theme: Talent, Innovation and Engagment. Sponsors receive recognition at the Chamber's biggest event of the year. Chamber Partnership To provide solution-based partnership strategies and initiatives which focus on value and result in growth and prosperity for all Chamber partners. Existing Business Retention & Expansion Retain and expand existing targeted businesses using a proactive business retention model. New Business Attraction Recruit targeted businesses to South Central Kentucky that will diversify the economy and create high-wage jobs that will increase the economic vitality of the region. Regionalism Work together as a true partnership to create a cooperative environment for business and industry to thrive, improving quality of life in South Central Kentucky. Talent Development #05 #06 Collaborate with public and private organizations to foster a world-class workforce system that develops a trained and skilled workforce that meets the current and future needs of our targeted businesses and partners. Innovation & Entrepreneurship Expand innovation, entrepreneurship and small business prosperity, including those within targeted sectors throughout the region. Chamber accomplishments at a glance Ribbon cuttings Coffee Hours Together with our partners, we coordinated more than 80 ribbon cuttings and groundbreakings that celebrated new business, expanding business, relocation and new ownership. Coffee Hours allow partners to communicate their programs, activities and successes to an audience of nearly 350 partner representatives, while providing high quality guest speakers to entertain the early morning crowd. LEGISLATIVE EFFORTS The Legislative Action Committee coordinated legislative forums and updates to educate the partnership on happenings in the legislative world. Forums were held throughout the year and varied in topic. The Chamber's Executive Committee and staff attended South Central Kentucky Night in Frankfort, an event that gives our regional partners a chance to meet one-on-one with state legislators. Student Engagement Partnered with President’s Club Diamond Star partner Western Kentucky University to host Welcome Back WKU, which offers Chamber businesses the chance to market their products and services to more than 3,000 WKU students in their first week back on campus. In 2015, we expanded the event to over 80 partners. KEY HIRE PROGRAM Provided key hires moving to the region an overview of all the community has to offer. The program, which matches future residents with partner volunteers who accompany them on driving tours, provided informational seminars featuring local community organizations. Publications Media • Distributed 15,000+ copies of Bowling Green & South Central Kentucky Magazine in South Central Kentucky in relocation packets and marketing materials. Produced a monthly television show with Time Warner Cable, interviewing guests on Chamber and community topics. We continued our monthly appearance on WBKO’s AM Kentucky to promote events, as well as expanded our reach to WNKY’s SOKY Sunrise and to the Tony Rose Show. • Distributed monthly Chamber Connection newsletter to over 2,800 partner representatives. SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY Coordinated Chamber partner promotions through a detailed communications plan to the public and partnership in celebration of National Small Business Saturday on Nov. 28. Business After Hours These afterhours networking events are held at partner business locations, providing networking and sponsorship opportunities in an informal setting. Attendance in 2015 ranged from 75 to 250. Awards In May, we celebrated Chamber partners at our second annual Excellence Awards Luncheon at the Knicely Conference Center. Ambassadors Club The Chamber’s Ambassadors Club celebrated 30 years in 2015. LET'S DO LUNCH This monthly lunchtime networking program offers partner representatives a convenient way to network during the lunch hour at partner businesses. STRATEGIC INITIATIVE Accolades #01 USCC KCCE The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce was honored in 2015 with Excellence Awards by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives during its annual Spring Conference in Frankfort. Awards received include: • Outstanding Membership Retention for 2014 • Outstanding Publication for Annual Report • Outstanding Website The KCCE, established in 1965, serves as the society for chamber of commerce professionals in the state. The KCCE Excellence Awards recognize superior achievement and professional excellence among local chambers of commerce throughout Kentucky. Reaccredited as a 5-Star Chamber by the United States Chamber of Commerce. This distinction is awarded to only 1 percent of chambers across the nation. In 2015, we re-examined every element of our new partner marketing materials to improve our overall brand and communicate our mission and services effectively – resulting in a modern, clean, easy-to-navigate information packet. The Chamber has played a significant role in the prosperity of our region for 80 years. Incorporated in 1935, the Chamber stands 1,200+ partners strong and is accredited among the only 1 percent of chambers in the nation with a 5-Star rating by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The accreditation process is a comprehensive examination of every aspect of a Chamber’s operations, including governance, finance, human resources, government affairs, program development, technology, communications, facilities and benchmarking. A previous nationally recognized Chamber of the Year by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives, the Chamber continues to receive dozens of honors and awards annually from industry associations. C In 2015, we met with more than 90 percent of our more than 1,200 partners to determine, customize and deliver services that each partner finds most valuable for business development and growth, concluding the year with an 86 percent retention rate – above the national average for Chambers our size. PRESIDENT'S CLUB AMBASSADORS CLUB In 2015, we welcomed four new President’s Club partners, bringing our total President’s Club partnership to 68. These Chamber partners choose to invest directly in economic development efforts. We also hosted a quarterly breakfast series that offered our President’s Club partners exclusive access to information related to economic development. In 2015, we grew our Ambassadors Club from 30 to 40 volunteers. Ambassadors collectively provide more than 4,000 volunteer hours to support the partnership and Chamber initiatives by: This year’s breakfast speakers included Ron Bunch, our president and CEO; members of HearBG, our new music and arts committee; and Dave Adkisson, president and CEO of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. • Welcoming and mentoring new partners seeking to establish their life-long commitment to the organization • Attending Chamber events to support our partners • Strengthening Chamber staff efforts through connections and resources, specifically opening doors for recruitment and retention of partners LBG Leadership Bowling Green is a leadership development program that began in 1985 and involves nine sessions, beginning with a retreat in April and ending with a graduation in November. During the nine sessions, the class studies the community's strengths and challenges through lectures, discussions, tours and role-playing activities. The program's goal is for particpants to gain a wide knowledge of Bowling Green through an overview of community functions. On Nov. 17, 2015, 32 students graduated from the program. Each year, the Chamber rewards volunteers for their hard work through a points system, with the Top 10 Ambassadors named at an end of year luncheon. All Ambassadors earning 1,000 or more points are recognized with stars on www.bgchamber.com. The 2015 Ambassador of the Year was Sue Parrigin of Western Kentucky University. This Chamber initiative attracts, retains and connects young talent in our community to engage and empower our next generation of business and community leaders to actively shape the Bowling Green area. Benefits include monthly socials, volunteer and mentoring opportunities, free registration for Business at its Best seminars – an $80 value – and many more. Memberships are available for ages 40 and under. The group was re-established in 2014 and has since grown to 106 members. In 2015, the group attended ballgames, volunteered for the Chamber’s Work Ethic Seal program at the Boys & Girls Club of Bowling Green and hosted several holiday parties including a Halloween costume party, a Thanksgiving dinner and an Ugly Sweater Christmas party. Our partnership sales representative Ashlee Wilson also attended the 2015 YP Unite Summit in Covington, Ky., along with Chamber partner representatives Rebecca Lee of Commonwealth Health Corporation and Jason Marshall of Leadership Strategies Group. economic development accomplishments at a glance Announcements The Chamber’s 2015 announced projects brought a total capital investment of more than $943 million, with the creation of over 1,000 new jobs. Site Selection magazine Kentucky placed first in Governor’s Cup national rankings for new and expanded industry activity per capita for the year. In 2014, Bowling Green touted the largest capital investment for a manufacturing firm in Kentucky with the announcement of international joint venture Constellium-UACJ, which brought more than $155 million in capital investment and 80 new jobs. Warren County was the second largest investment project in the state for 2015. Area Development magazine Kentucky received the 10th annual Silver Shovel award for states with populations between 3 and 5 million. Communications The Chamber received the Communications Award of Merit for Motorsports in South Central Kentucky by SEDC. Warren County was the second largest job creation project in the state for 2015. The program unites local plant managers across various sectors as they gather in an informal setting to examine common issues relative to their specific business. The PMR meets bi-monthly at manufacturing facilities in Warren County so companies can showcase their best practices and operating environments. Visits This year was an exciting year for business expansions, as we ended 2015 with visits to 72 targeted businesses in South Central Kentucky. During these visits, we work with companies to understand their needs and to ensure they understand what opportunities are available to them through our organization. KAM Manufacturer of the Year The Kentucky Association for Manufacturers presented this award to Holley Performance Products for showing exceptional entrepreneurial spirit, community leadership and policy contributions to enhance the prosperity of the Commonwealth. The Chamber nominated Holley for this award. We finished 2015 with 18 expansion announcements, totaling $904,008,435 and 891 new jobs. #02 existing business retention & expansion To retain and expand existing targeted businesses using a proactive business retention model. Focus: General Motors General Motors’ May 2015 expansion was the No. 2 project in the state for manufacturing capital investment, bringing a total investment of $439,000,000. This expansion is the fifth largest capital investment in the state in over a decade and the fourth largest motor vehicle related capital investment in the state in the last five years. ABOUT The facility, which opened in 1981, sits on 212 acres. The Bowling Green Assembly Plant is the only home to the iconic Corvette, producing the 2015 Corvette Stingray and the 2015 Corvette Z06. The Corvette Z06 and Camaro Z/28 engines are built in Bowling Green. GROWTH The Bowling Green Assembly Plant has experienced outstanding growth in recent years. In May 2011, GM announced a $131 million investment for the Bowling Green Assembly Plant to support the production of the next-generation Corvette. The company’s 2015 announcement brings its total capital investment in five years to more than $570 million. In January 2013, GM announced the relocation of its Performance Build Center from Wixom, Mich., to Bowling Green. The Performance Build Center, which opened its doors in Bowling Green last year, allows engine aficionados to build their own specialty engines. The move was backed by a $3.5 million investment and created 20 jobs. GM also announced an additional expansion bringing a total investment of $44,000,000 and 36 jobs. Focus: Bowling Green Metalforming ABOUT Bowling Green Metalforming’s expansion was the No. 3 project in the state for manufacturing capital investment and was the third largest capital investment in the state in 2015, bringing a total investment of $261,240,000 and 450 new jobs. BGM, a division of Magna International Inc., supports companies such as General Motors, Ford Motor Company, BMW and Mercedes, and is one of the largest employers and automotive suppliers in the region. The original anchor tenant of the Kentucky Transpark, the company has been the source of outstanding growth and success for a decade. Since 2005, the company has seen several expansions, with another underway, making the facility 1.2 million square feet with more than 1,400 employees. The project includes a 260,000 square foot expansion and the purchase of equipment to support multiple recently-awarded contracts for heavy stamping, robotic assembly and the coating of frames and other parts delivered to major original equipment manufacturers. Over the next 10 years, the project’s economic impact is expected to reach more than $800 million with the creation of 450 new jobs. targeted business & industry appreciation month OCT. 1 Targeted Business & Industry Appreciation Event We kicked off Targeted Business & Industry Appreciation Month by celebrating our targeted business and industries with a VIP event including hor d’oeuvres, cocktails, bourbon tastings, exclusive museum access, competitive golf cart racing, prizes and more. OCT. 1 Your Employee Handbook: the Latest Recommended Updates Presented by English, Lucas, Priest & Owsley, this seminar gave an in-depth overview of writing and editing employee handbooks. OCT. 6 Today's New Agriculture The Kentucky Department of Agriculture discussed the state's ever-changing agricultural landscape and its impact on economic development. October is Targeted Business & Industry Appreciation Month in South Central Kentucky. Beginning Oct. 1, we hosted a series of events to celebrate and honor the accomplishments of the more than 100 targeted businesses and industries and their contributions to the region’s economic prosperity. OCT. 20 Targeted Business & Industry Awards Banquet We honored 16 businesses with awards at the Knicely Conference Center. Bowling Green Metalforming received the top award of the evening, the John B. Holland Business of the Year Award. The banquet is held each year in conjunction with Targeted Business & Industry Appreciation Month in an effort to recognize and salute targeted businesses and industries throughout South Central Kentucky for their accomplishments. Dan Pelino, general manager of IBM Public Sector, was the keynote speaker. Facility Tours Seven manufacturers hosted facility tours for 180 area high school students from Warren County Area Technology Center and Bowling Green and Adair County high schools, allowing the businesses to showcase their innovative products and processes and to introduce the students to their company culture and career opportunities. The exposure to modern manufacturing aligns with the Chamber’s efforts to prepare students for college or careers as they learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and other essential workplace skills. STRATEGIC INITIATIVE At the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, we are constantly working to attract new businesses to South Central Kentucky. We are proud of our outstanding year with five attraction projects totaling $39,768,800 in capital investment and 149 projected new jobs. new business attraction We welcomed TMS Automotive to the fifth speculative building three months after completion and taking possession, and we broke ground on Speculative Building VI. Our economic development team has responded to 87 requests for information from companies seeking a new location. In addition, 15 different companies interested in locating to South Central Kentucky have visited us, resulting in 31 visits overall. To recruit targeted businesses to South Central Kentucky that will diversify the economy and create high-wage jobs that will increase the economic vitality of the region. In addition to the company's original $120 million investment, the company is already expanding with a $10 million slitting operation, bringing the total capital investment to $130 million. The new plant will allow BILSTEIN to serve major players in the automotive and automotive supply industry as well as other industries. Throughout the year, we host the staff and project managers at the cabinet to ensure they have the most up-to-date information on the happenings throughout SCKY including business expansions, property availability and more. economic development services In addition to our core marketing partnership, the Chamber provides extended economic development services to the City of Morgantown and Metcalfe County, providing business expansion and retention services as well as business attraction and property development services. cumberland agricultural groundbreaking Cumberland Agricultural Management announced an investment of $3 million and the creation of 15 new jobs in Metcalfe County. The company will construct a 12,000 square foot facility in Metcalfe County, providing agricultural reclamation services to local farmers and an environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional disposal methods. The new facility will be used to recycle reclaimed material into marketable products such as cosmetics, animal/pet feed and leather goods. Because this project has already been recognized as an important step to improving and preserving the water quality in South Central Kentucky, the Kentucky Soil and Water Conservation Districts are offering a rebate to farmers using the service. $3M investment 15 new jobs 12,000 square foot facility metro chamber coalition We are part of the Metro Chamber Coalition along with Greater Louisville, Inc., Commerce Lexington, Inc., and the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. This group meets regularly to discuss common issues, and for the past two years, we have offered a legislative agenda of issues that affect all three regions. Being a part of this group allows us to have a more prominent voice and to promote South Central Kentucky on a larger scale, as well as advocate for issues that affect the region. w STRATEGIC INITIATIVE #05 WORK ETHIC SEAL In an effort to enhance our region’s current labor force's competency areas, we are implementing the Work Ethic Seal in area high schools. WES is a program designed to meet the needs of employers by preparing the future workforce to master the skills needed to be successful in a 21st century global economy. In 2015, our goal was to increase participation by 15 percent. Over 600 students participated in the 2015 program, up from 100 in 2013. talent development TRAINING CONSORTIUM OF SOUTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY The Training Consortium of South Central Kentucky is a regional membership organization that provides a platform for cost-effective, collaborative and industry-driven training. The Consortium’s training options enhance the local economic development infrastructure and provide opportunities for leadership, soft skill and technical skill development for new, prospect and incumbent workers. Training is offered through competency-driven certificate programs, hands-on workshops and online programs. In 2015, the Consortium experienced participation with over 260 unduplicated employees from 22 diverse companies enrolled in various training opportunities. To collaborate with public and private organizations to foster a world-class workforce system that develops a trained and skilled workforce that meets the current and future needs of our targeted businesses and partners. The Consortium’s award-winning Supervisor Certificate Program entered its eighth cohort and is expected to produce its 153rd graduate in the upcoming year, while the Group Leader Certificate Program is on track to reach nearly 60 graduates through five cohorts. In 2015, the Consortium also introduced a new Excel Certificate Program which has already produced 18 graduates through two cohorts. 18 2015 GRADUATES IN EXCEL CERTIFICATE PROGRAM 15% WORK ETHIC SEAL PARTICIPATION INCREASE GOAL 2 SECOND GENERATION CAMAROS STUDENTS ARE REBUILDING THROUGH ON TRACK $1.4M RAISED BY THE CHAMBER TO PUT TLIM IN EVERY WARREN COUNTY SCHOOL 4 TLIM LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOLS IN WARREN COUNTY ON TRACK In 2015, the Chamber launched the On Track motorsports education initiative in partnership with the Warren County Area Technology Center, Southcentral Kentucky Community & Technical College and Holley Performance Products. In partnership with the Bowling Green Area Economic Development Authority, the Chamber purchased two second-generation Chevrolet Camaros from Holley to donate to SKYCTC and Warren County ATC. During the 2015-16 school year, students are completely rebuilding the cars using multiple educational disciplines, including science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. Industry experts are working with students and faculty to develop the cars and curriculum. In 2016, the cars will compete in the Holley LS Fest Grand Champion competition, and students will be judged on their business/marketing plan and use of STEM educational principles CAREER ACADEMIES To prepare students for life beyond the classroom, the Chamber is working with Ford Next Generation Learning to implement career academies in local high school classrooms. The Chamber raised $1.4 million to put The Leader in Me in every school in Warren County, which was highly successful in developing leadership skills in the elementary and middle school grades. Ford NGL will take that leadership experience and pair it with career-focused learning in high schools. Ford NGL uses the proven model of career academies to transform public high schools by combining education, students and businesses in a partnership that clearly defines the roles, responsibilities and vision each group brings to the table. THE LEADER IN ME In 2015, Warren County Public Schools announced that Plano and Alvaton elementary schools joined Natcher and Briarwood elementary schools as The Leader in Me Lighthouse schools. The Leader in Me program teaches 21st century leadership skills based on Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” This community is on track to be the first in the U.S. to have implemented TLIM in grades K-12, in combination with career academies for all students in all schools. w GREAT MINDS DRINK ALIKE STRATEGIC INITIATIVE #06 The Chamber hosted its inaugural technology and innovation event: Great Minds Drink Alike, in which professionals in the engineering, information technology, research and development and technology fields gathered for a free beer-tasting, pizza-eating networking event. The event was hosted by Kentucky Innovation Network, the WKU Small Business Accelerator and Kerrick Bachert, PSC. SMALL BUSINESS APPRECIATION MONTH In 2015, in support of small businesses in South Central Kentucky, we: • Honored Ed Griffin of Griff ’s Deli as the 2015 Small Business Person of the Year. Griffin is the 31st businessperson to receive this award. • Held the Women in Small Business Breakfast at The Medical Center of Bowling Green, with Regina Parsley-Byrd as guest speaker. • Led the partnership-wide Small Business Appreciation Golf Challenge at Indian Hills Country Club with more than 150 players and volunteers participating.
