Public Works
New Procedure for Snow Removal
What is salt brine?
When is salt brine used?
Salt brine is water saturated with sodium chloride, or
more simply, rock salt dissolved in water. The Township
initiated this anti-icing program in 2012 to take a
proactive approach to controlling snow and ice on
Tredyffrin roadways. Applying brine to the roadway is
similar to spraying a frying pan with oil to keep food
from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
Salt brine is applied by spraying it onto the pavement
up to 72 hours in advance of a winter storm.
Why use salt brine?
It is anticipated that the cost savings for the Township
will be approximately $7,500 per storm, in material
costs alone. Salt brine is much more cost effective and
brine also allows the Public Works Department to
apply during normal working hours. In addition this
allows the Township to have our entire routes pretreated before the driving conditions deteriorate. This
will help the snow/ice from bonding to the pavement
surface. As a result, the roads return to bare pavement
much quicker once the storm has ended.
6
Tredyffrin Township
What is the pre-treating process?
Pre-treating is a snow fighting strategy used in
anticipation of road/bridge frost or warmer winter
storms (normally above 15° F). If applied just before a
winter storm, salt brine will begin working as soon as
the first snowflake falls and will help delay the
accumulation of snow and ice on the pavement.

Public Works
New Procedure for Snow Removal
Motorists can expect to see crews pre-treating the roads
with salt brine using the Township's specially modified
trucks, with units that slide into the back of a typical
plow truck.
What should you do when following a vehicle
applying salt brine?
Vehicles applying salt brine usually travel at speeds of less
than 30 miles per hour. Motorists should stay back at least
300 feet from the vehicle.
What are the other advantages of using salt brine?
Anti-icing returns road surfaces to normal faster, resulting
in fewer accidents and delays.
Using a liquid anti-icer jumpstarts the melting process
because salt needs moisture to be effective.
Brine doesn't bounce or blow off the road surface so
material is used more efficiently.
If the storm is delayed salt residue remains on the road
ready to begin work when precipitation begins.
Crews can cover more territory by beginning treatment in
advance of a storm.
Increased efficiency results in use of less salt, minimizing
environmental concerns.

and your family a happy and healthy
New Year.
In reflecting back on a very busy 2012,
I would be remiss if I did not extend
my sincere thanks to the community
for your participation, input and
support for the many programs
sponsored by the Police Department.
In 2013, we look forward with
enthusiasm to serving this great

community. I intend to continue such
well received programs as the Citizens
Police Academy, the Police Learning
Series and Police Summer Kids
Camp. Additionally, please look for
new programs such as Child Safety ID
programs, seminars held at the
community libraries as well as
quarterly "police nights" held at our
police department. These "police
nights" will enable all of our
community to voice their concerns in
an informal setting or just simply stop
by to visit the police open house for
some refreshments.
Please realize that your police
department is comprised of the finest
officers in the region who work
tirelessly for the benefit of our
community. The police department

Saturday, April 27
The curricula are free to Tredyffrin residents and crewmembers of shows produced by Tredyffrin residents. The Basics of
Production curriculum is mandatory for every Tredyffrin Township Television (TTTV) producer and crewmember and is a
required prerequisite for other curricula.
Every taping, according to the physical demands of the production, requires a certain number of certified crewmembers to safely
build a show. At least three crewmembers certified in Basics of Video Production, one of whom must be the Lead Certified Producer
and a Tredyffrin resident, are recommended to produce a polished three-camera studio taping.
The number of crewmembers required for any field production will be determined by the studio manager at the time of the
equipment loan. The basic determining factor will always be how many pairs of hands are necessary to keep talent, crew and
equipment safe.
Only Basics of Production-certified crewmembers may use our facilities and equipment.
Classes are held at the Greenwood Studio in the Tredyffrin Township Building at 1100 DuPortail Rd. in Berwyn.
Students may attend either the Wednesday evening or the Saturday class, and that selection may change week to week.
Space may be limited to first registrants. Classes may be cancelled if attendance is low.
Register by 5 PM on Friday, April 5 by emailing TTTV@tredyffrin.org or by calling the Studio Manager
Gene Donahue at 610-408-3633. Early registration is preferred. Dates are subject to change.

Senior Lifestyles
Solutions for Seniors
Most seniors want to remain in their
homes as they age, in the community
where they lived. Sometimes
physical difficulties or financial
constraints make this challenging.
Surrey Services for Seniors, a nonprofit organization, offers
comprehensive services to meet the
changing needs of older adults
enabling them to remain comfortably
in their homes and engaged in the
community.
Senior Centers: Surrey House in
Berwyn is one of several Surrey
locations where members can enjoy
the companionship of new and old friends, enjoy a meal, and
participate in stimulating recreational and cultural activities. In
addition to a fully equipped fitness center, exercise classes geared to
older adults are offered regularly. The Surrey Café serves a
delicious nutritious lunch in a warm and inviting atmosphere
Monday-Thursday from 11:30-12:30, and is open to the public. A
modest contribution of $3 is recommended.
Transportation: Surrey provides several transportation options:
shared ride, which is similar to carpooling with other seniors in a
van; volunteer driver escorts are available for those who need more
assistance; and private driver services, which is available for an
hourly fee as needed.
provide education after a hospitalization, and more. A Geriatric
Care Manager is available to work with seniors and their families to
evaluate specific situations, connect people with appropriate
resources, and manage overall care as needed.
Friendly Check In: Surrey offers friendly phone calls by
volunteers for seniors who might be isolated at home or who would
benefit from that regular form of social contact and the assurance
that someone is checking in with them.
Daily Money Management: Professional, one-on-one assistance
in all aspects of daily personal finances such as bill paying, bank
statements, tax information and budgeting is available. This allows
the senior to retain control over their finances while eliminating the
stress of handling these matters themselves.
Home Maintenance: Surrey offers volunteers who can visit a
home for small tasks such as changing light bulbs or the batteries in
a smoke detector. A paid handyman is available for tasks such as
installing grab bars, replacing doorbells or small painting jobs.
Volunteer Opportunities: Surrey's philosophy of "neighbor
helping neighbor" offers people in the community many
opportunities to assist seniors in our neighborhood.
To learn more about how Surrey can
help you, a loved one, or a neighbor
in need, call 610-647-6404 or visit
www.surreyservices.org.
Home Care: A companion can assist with bathing, dressing,
preparing simple meals and doing light housekeeping. They can
also take a senior out for errands or to appointments. Sometimes the
social isolation seniors experience is overwhelming and
companions are a wonderful way to stay connected. This can be
scheduled for a just a few hours or as much as 24 hour/day.
Home Health: A Surrey nurse can come to a senior's home to
organize their medication or assess and monitor medical needs.
Nurses are available to take blood for lab tests, care for wounds,
