The university is located approximately 15 miles inland from Mobile Bay on high ground (87 feet above sea level) and, therefore, out of the storm surge danger area. To ensure the safety of the University of Mobile community and property, the university has developed an Emergency Management Plan to be implemented at the direction of the president of the university or his appointed representative. University personnel will monitor the development of each tropical storm and use this information to guide implementation of the Emergency Management Plan. Please use the information in this pamphlet as a guideline for what to do if a storm threatens. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF A HURRICANE WARNING IS ISSUED? At the time of a hurricane warning, the president of the university will monitor the hurricane’s location and evaluate the potential threat. Depending on these factors as well as the location of the expected landfall, the president will determine a timeline for a campus evacuation. An announcement will be made by the president’s office outlining the campus evacuation details. Students may be notified through the University of Mobile Emergency Alert System, Twitter @umobilenews, University of Mobile facebook, MyUM, or through local media outlets (television, radio, www.al.com). IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS Residential Life 251.442.2990 Main Switchboard 251.675.5990 Campus Security 251.510.4273 STEP 1 Review the University Hurricane Preparedness Plan (MyUM under Public Disclosures) and stay tuned to weather authorities. Follow university instructions. Stay in touch with family to discuss your personal emergency planning. Keep your electronic devices, such a cell phones, charged. If you have a car, fill it with fuel. Refill any prescription medications you may need. STEP 2 Review the Mobile County Emergency Management Agency website (www.mcema.net) for important information on emergency preparedness and evacuation procedures for our area. Should you decide to evacuate to an off campus location, notify your CLC of your plans. Please be advised that careful evacuation planning is important. Heavy traffic flow and gas shortages can greatly impede normal travel time. STEP 3 INSTRUCTIONS FOR SECURING DORM ROOM If you choose to evacuate: • Move all furniture away from windows and unplug all electrical equipment. • Take all valuables (jewelry, electronic equipment, etc.) with you when you leave. • Water may enter your room from rain driven by high winds, so anything on or near the floor—shoes, suitcase, etc. — should be moved to high shelves or dresser drawers. • Place all papers, books, and loose or small objects in dresser drawers or on closet shelves. • Remove all food items from your room/refrigerator. Relocate your refrigerator to the shower. • Close all windows. • Close and lock the door to your room. • If your car must remain in the dorm parking lot, make sure the emergency brake is set and the transmission is in park. Close all windows and lock the car. • If you are asked to relocate to the university-designated shelter on campus, the university will provide water and food during your stay. The emergency shelter will not have shower facilities. Because space is limited, please plan accordingly. Remember that power outages are common during storms. LIST OF POSSIBLE ITEMS NEEDED FOR CAMPUS SHELTER: Flashlight with extra batteries Prescription medications Sleeping bag or blanket & pillow Toiletries Items to keep you entertained: games, music, books, etc. Snacks that do not require refrigeration Important documents: Driver’s license or State-issued ID, Social Security Cards, visa, passports RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS: The university recommends that residential students who can safely go home or to the home of a friend or family member should do so. Students departing campus should call parents or family members BEFORE traveling. The university will work closely with residential students if students are unable to leave. Emergency housing is coordinated through Residential Life. COMMUTER STUDENTS Commuter students should also take appropriate steps to ensure personal safety. The president will determine when it is safe to return to campus after a storm. For information regarding the re-opening of school, students may be notified through the University of Mobile Emergency Alert System, University of Mobile facebook, Twitter @umobilenews, MyUM, local media outlets (television, radio, www.al.com) or the university main switchboard at 251.675.5990. PARENTS: Keep in contact with your student by cell phone and discuss your student’s specific plans.
