The Jonathan Ross Show
Saturday 18th October, 10.20pm
Jonathan Ross once again picks up the Saturday night chat
show baton as he returns to ITV for a brand new seventh
series featuring some of the biggest names from film, TV,
sport, comedy and music.
His guests in the first programme are the legendary Sir David
Attenborough, who has presented countless wildlife and
environmental programmes, as well as acting as controller of
BBC Two in the 1960s. Cheryl Fernandez-Versini also drops
in to give her first interview since getting married, and shares
the sofa with her fellow X Factor judge Mel B, and the two of
them will no doubt be giving us some gossip about the latest
series of the talent contest. Also appearing is Hollywood star
Steve Carell, who made his name in comedy films Anchorman
and The 40-Year-Old Virgin and won a Golden Globe for his
lead performance in the American version of TV series The
Office. He is now being tipped for an Oscar in an altogether
more serious role in the based-on-a-true-story drama
Foxcatcher. The live music is provided by Scottish rock and
soul singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini, who has produced three
acclaimed albums, and a number of classy hit singles.
Surprise Surprise
Wednesday 22nd October, 8pm
Holly Willoughby presents a third series of the
heartwarming show which combines touching
real-life stories with the world of showbiz and
entertainment. Holly revived Cilla Black’s classic
1980s and 1990s show in autumn 2012,
bringing a fresh modern twist to the fondly
remembered format over six episodes. In this
modern version of the series, Willoughby and
her team of roving reporters head out across the
UK to give deserving members of the public the
biggest surprise of their lives. The last series
also included appearances from top music
guests including US singing sensation Selena
Gomez, girl group The Saturdays and hip-hop
duo Rizzle Kicks, alongside a number of tearjerking stories and life-affirming reunions. The
opening show of this series sees global pop
superstar Pharrell Williams giving an amazing
young fundraiser the surprise of a lifetime. An
inspiring letter writer who has touched the
hearts of thousands across the world gets an
unexpected invitation from Stephen Fry. Two
dedicated carers who have fostered over 250
children receive a heartwarming thank you,
and a lady who sponsored a boy in Africa from
the age of four meets him for the very first
time. Also featured is a special musical
performance from former Pussycat Doll and X
Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger.

The Great Fire
Thursday 23rd October, 9pm
The four-part drama series based on the events of 1666
continues. In the second episode, as the fire gains
strength, baker Thomas Farriner (Andrew Buchan)
bursts into his sister-in-law’s lodgings to wake his family
and lead them to safety. But Sarah (Rose Leslie) is
nowhere to be seen and their shouts for her in the street
bring no response. Thomas leads them through the
crowds to the Thames, but escape by river proves
impossible. They make their way northwards towards
Moorfields. Meanwhile, Sarah is being held in a private
cell at Newgate Prison while Lord Denton (Charles
Dance) interrogates the Duke of Hanford’s footman about Hanford’s mysterious Spanish guest and
a Catholic plot against the King. When it is Sarah’s turn to be interrogated, she refuses to cooperate
and is thrown into Newgate’s general cell, which is full of crazed criminals. Samuel Pepys (Daniel
Mays) brings news of the spreading of the fire to the King (Jack Huston) at the Palace of Whitehall.
Charles follows Pepys’ advice to survey the damage for himself from the safety of the river. From
this vantage point, the King is shocked into action, ordering his advisors to tear down buildings to
create fire-breaks and to compensate the public for damage. Despite Pepys delivering this message
to the Mayor, Lord Hyde (Richard McCabe) and Ashley Cooper (Richard Dixon) undercut him by
withdrawing the promise to pay compensation.
Grantchester
Monday 20th October, 9pm
The six-part crime drama series
set in a Cambridgeshire village
in 1953, starring James Norton
as local vicar Sidney
Chambers, continues. After
Guy (Tom Austen) and Amanda
(Morven Christie) ask Sidney to
perform their wedding
ceremony, the heartbroken
vicar takes solace in a bottle.
When Mrs Maguire (Tessa
Peake-Jones) points out he is
failing in his parish duties,
Sidney vows to leave drinking
and criminal investigations
behind to concentrate on his
clerical duties. He helps
Leonard (Al Weaver) as he
moves into the vicarage, and
agrees to help Isabel (Lucy
Black) prepare for her
upcoming wedding to new man
in town Arthur (Kieran
O’Brien). Isabel’s stubborn
mother, Daisy (Jean Marsh),
is proving to be a big
impediment to their wedding
as she believes Arthur wants
her dead. When Daisy is
then found dead, Mrs
Maguire – who has a bad
feeling about Arthur – goes
behind his back and calls in
ITV.com
Geordie (Robson Green) to
investigate. Sidney soon finds
himself reluctantly being
dragged into the investigation.
While Daisy’s death seems to
be due to natural causes,
Arthur and Isabel are pushing
for a fast cremation of the body
which arouses suspicion. What
is it that they don’t want to be
discovered? Things take a
darker turn when Daisy’s sister
Gladys (Isla Blair) is also found
dead – this time, from
suspected poisoning. With
secrets about Arthur’s past
beginning to come to light, and
a mysterious stranger stalking
the town, Sidney must deduce
if these deaths are connected
and potentially stop any further
killings.

Lewis
Friday 24th October, 9pm
The eighth series of hit police drama Lewis continues
with the first part of The Lions of Nemea. After a
difficult start, the new relationship between Lewis
(Kevin Whately) and DI Hathaway (Laurence Fox)
seems to have achieved some semblance of
normality. DS Maddox (Angela Griffin) has become
integral to the team, and even Dr Laura Hobson
(Claire Holman), initially sceptical, seems to be at
peace with sharing her supposedly retired partner
with Hathaway and the Oxfordshire Police. But the
team’s abilities are sorely tested when they begin to
investigate the brutal murder of American classics
student Rose Anderson (Alisha Bailey), whose body is hauled from the canal with stab wounds to
the neck and abdomen. Suspicion immediately falls on young astrophysics professor Felix Garwood
(John Light), who had recently broken off an affair with Rose and was knocked off his bicycle by his
jilted lover in the hours preceding the murder. Felix happens to be married to Rose’s PHD
supervisor Philippa Garwood (Andrea Lowe) – could the jealous wife have committed murder? But
the more the detectives delve, the more secrets and murky motives they uncover. Rose’s flatmate
Chloe Ilson (Jessica Henwick) is mixed up with the criminal activities of her bouncer boyfriend
Harrison Sax (Michael Ryan) – did they kill Rose to keep her quiet?
Downton Abbey

developments in the lives of the aristocratic

Abbey. Dame Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville

Bunting (Daisy Lewis), and Rose (Lily James)
encounters a handsome stranger. Determined
to stop Isobel (Penelope Wilton) making the
wrong decision about Lord Merton (Douglas
Reith), Violet (Smith) enlists the help of Doctor

quite as planned. Meanwhile in London,

Mary (Michelle Dockery) with a cunning plan to
help her get exactly what she wants.

October 2014
Wednesday 22nd October, 9pm
Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp star in series four of the police
drama that explores the personal and professional lives of two
female detectives in Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team. In
episode seven, Janet (Sharp) is concerned about DCI Gill Murray
(Amelia Bullmore)’s drinking, but after she mentions the fact to
DSI Dodson (Pippa Haywood) she is unnerved to find that her
observations are being taken more seriously than she had
intended. Just as Rachel (Jones) feels as if she is getting to grips
with being a sergeant, she makes a fatal error that puts Janet
and DC Chris Crowley (Danny Webb) in danger. Rachel alerts
Janet to the charms of her new colleague, and Janet soon finds
herself enjoying Chris’s company as well, but when a car chase
they are involved in ends in a fatality, Janet wonders whether her
flirtatious behaviour has led her to take her eye off the ball. As
she finds herself under investigation, Janet also has to face Gill’s
anger at being under Dodson’s scrutiny. When a man’s body is
discovered on the moors with nothing to identify him, a roadblock
is set up and an appeal is put out. The man’s ex-girlfriend comes
forward to identify him, but the police are shocked to find that he
disappeared 15 years ago and has not been seen since. When enquiries lead Janet and Chris to a
nearby farm, they discover something much more sinister than they could have anticipated.

Secrets from the Sky
Friday 24th October, 8pm
Bettany Hughes continues the series offering a
unique and visually stunning look at Britain’s past
by taking to the air to give a fresh perspective on
our heritage. With co-presenter Ben Robinson,
she takes a bird’s-eye view of some of this
country’s most popular and intriguing sites to
unlock secrets hidden in the landscape. By
piecing together the evidence visible from the air
with clues on the ground, the pair solve
fascinating mysteries and reveal lesser-known
glories from the story of Britain.
In the second episode, their investigations take
them to the windswept plains of Wiltshire and the
remains of a ghost town that was once one of William the Conqueror’s most important strongholds.
Old Sarum is the ancient city that should have evolved into Salisbury. But instead it was abandoned
and the brand new city of Salisbury was built from scratch two miles away. Why did this happen? As
Ben discovers from the air, many of the clues to the sudden shift are recorded in the lumps and
bumps of this breathtakingly beautiful and unusual site. His aerial clues allow Bettany to unearth a
story of Saxon kings and Norman conquerors, the birth of the Domesday book and a very public
and bitter battle between the church and the military that lead to the death of a city.
UEFA Champions League Live: Chelsea
v NK Maribor *
Tuesday 21st October, 7.30pm
Adrian Chiles introduces live coverage from
Stamford Bridge as Chelsea take on Slovenian
champions NK Maribor in the third Group Game
for both teams. Chelsea are currently top of the
group, having beaten Sporting Lisbon and drawn
with FC Schalke while Maribor have drawn both
their games. Jose Mourinho’s team are also top
of the Premier League, with new signings Diego
Costa and Cesc Fabregas making major
contributions to a free-flowing attack currently
averaging three goals per game, but have yet to
reach top form in the Champions League. Diego
Costa has been particularly impressive and
his goals have shown what Spain missed
during the World Cup which he missed
through injury. Maribor have been the most
successful club in the Slovenian top flight
since 1991 when Slovenia emerged from the
break-up of Yugoslavia, having been
champions on 12 occasions. Head coach Ante
Simundza is a former Maribor player who took
over his present role in 2013. This is only the
second time that Maribor have qualified for
the Champions League group stage, which
they did by knocking out Scottish champions
Celtic in the play-off.

Scorpion
Thursday 23rd October, 9pm
Inspired by a true story, this high-octane US
drama debuts on ITV2 this week. Eccentric genius
Walter O’Brien (Elyes Gabel) and his team of
brilliant misfits comprise the last line of defence
against the complex, high-tech threats of the
modern age. At Homeland Security’s new think
tank, O’Brien’s ‘Scorpion’ team includes Toby
Curtis (Eddie Kaye Thomas), an expert
behaviourist who can read anyone, Happy Quinn
(Jadyn Wong), a mechanical prodigy, and
Sylvester Dodd (Ari Stidham), a statistics guru.
Pooling their extensive technological knowledge
to solve mind-boggling predicaments amazes
federal agent Cabe Gallo (Robert Patrick), who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien. However,
while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other’s humour and quirks, life outside
their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen (Katharine McPhee), who has a young
gifted son, to help them bridge the gap to the often-confusing real world. In the first episode, a crisis
at Los Angeles International Airport leaves dozens of airplanes unable to land. Keen to resolve the
crisis, the government enlists the assistance of a team of geniuses to save the day - the Scorpion
team.

Burruss, Phaedra Parks, Cynthia Bailey, Kenya
Moore and Porsha Stewart, having waved goodbye
to Kim Zolciak in the reunion episodes of last

spectacular showdowns which the Real Housewives
series has become famous for. In the first show of the new series, Kandi expresses hesitation in
planning her nuptials with her fiance Todd, while NeNe remains uninterested in befriending Kenya.
Meanwhile, Phaedra clashes with her husband Apollo over their differing views on parenting and

moments of harmony as the ladies rally round and support one another during good times and bad.

Darts: European Masters Live *
Friday 24th October, 12.45pm and 7pm
TV4 presents live darts coverage of the three-day European Championships tournament from
Mulheim in Germany, which starts on Friday October 24 and concludes with the final on Sunday
evening. This is the seventh year of this event which for the first five years was dominated by Phil
‘The Power’ Taylor. The last two years though have seen different winners, with Australian Simon
Whitlock winning in 2012 but losing out to Adrian Lewis in last year’s final. Lewis is famously known
as ‘Jackpot’ due to a $72,000 win at a casino in Las Vegas in 2005, a prize he was unable to claim
due to being under age according to American gaming laws. The Stoke-on-Trent player has also
had mixed fortunes this season with his
darts. He won his first UK Open title and
sailed through to the semi-finals of the
World Championships, only to suffer a 6-0
defeat at the hands of Michael van Gerwen
(pictured) of the Netherlands. This year’s
prize fund for the tournament is £250,000,
with £55,000 for the winner and £25,000
for the runner up. The top 16 players in the
PDC’s order of merit midway through the
year, who include Michael van Gerwen,
Phil Taylor and Simon Whitlock, get
automatic qualification to the tournament.
