When Mr. E.R. Belilios, a Jewish philanthropist, donated $25,000 for a new building for the Central School for Girls in 1893, a 3-storey building was erected in Hollywood Road and named after Mr. Belilios. In April 1965, the school was relocated to its present premises in Tin Hau Temple Road. To mark the occasion, a new school motto – “Climb High, See Wide”, a school song and a new school badge were created. School Management Committee (SMC) Since the implementation of school-based management in 1989, school has been given more autonomy in personnel, financial and other day-to-day administrative matters. Under the leadership of Mr. WAI Pui-wah PEO(ECP), the SMC met three times during the school year. Members took an active part at the meetings, demonstrating excellent collaboration and partnership among all stakeholders. Regular meetings were conducted in an open and harmonious atmosphere. Matters discussed included school self-evaluation, school development, academic promotion, student affairs and staff concerns. The SDC has proved to be an effective channel of communication between the management and staff. Shared decision-making has fostered a greater sense of ownership and team spirit. School Facilities Our school moved into its present premises more than 40 years ago. And during the past years, continuous renovation and enhancement work has been done to preserve its unique beauty while creating extra space for school expansion. The time-worn buildings have not only braved the harshness of Hong Kong weathers but also witnessed generations of young girls growing up into the persons they choose to be. With a history of 120 years, the campus of BPS would certainly have many tales to tell as you walk down memory lane. In 2008, a large scale project was carried out to upgrade all the classrooms. Now each classroom is equipped with a computer, network system, a projector and a screen. There is also a smart-looking set of lockers to maximize space and provide easy storage. In the past few years, renovation projects have been under way in order to enhance the school environment and to meet the needs of the NSS. The upgrade of laboratory and special rooms, the creation of extra classrooms, the resurfacing of playgrounds and the provision of additional storage space all bear witness to our conviction in creating a facilitative environment for learning and teaching. What brings us great pleasure and pride is our Green Roof, which is so far the most massive among Hong Kong schools. Specially designed by landscape architects, it is now a showpiece and a model for school greening. The fabulous landscape design not only blends naturally with its surroundings, improves the air quality and enhances the outlook of the otherwise mundane roof but it also provides heat insulation for the top floor. Staff attended training courses, workshops, conferences and symposiums organised by the EDB and other tertiary institutions. A worker from Yan Chai Hospital was invited to conduct a workshop on stress management from the perspective of Chinese medicine. In the afternoon, various recreational activities were arranged and teachers participated keenly. Feedback was positive and many teachers found that these programmes could help alleviate their stress. In the Second Staff Development Day, we visited Christian Zheng Sheng College in which we could see a different sky of learning. Principal Chan introduced the history of the school and through the campus tour, we had a better understanding of the school and the needs of their students and teachers. Finally, we had invited the HKEAA to conduct a NSS Assessment Training Workshop on HKDSE Examinations. Through the talk and interactive discussion, teachers were updated with the latest development of HKDSE. In the afternoon session, officers from the Fire Department conducted a fire safety talk for us. Their exemplary academic performance does not come as a coincidence but rather the hard work of a team of dedicated and professional staff who unceasingly learn to excel and teach to inspire. Aware of the huge impact of teachers on young people and how values and attitudes could be inculcated through classroom interactions, our teachers collaborate to deliver the kind of education we pledge to offer through the following strategies: To promote the spirit of the school motto – Climb High See Wide To create opportunities for life-wide learning whereby students acquire knowledge and skills through experiences and observations To develop students as self-directed and life-long learners To encourage students to share knowledge through peer learning To foster a reflective culture among students To train students to be critical thinkers with enhanced problem solving skills Language Education and English Speaking Leagues Our school has made an important stride forward in Language Education. To cater for the diverse interests and abilities of our students, we have been offering modern language courses since 2008, which would eventually align with the NSS. With the partnership and full support of the Department of Modern Languages and Culture of the University of Hong Kong, we are able to offer modern language courses at S.1 and eventually leading up to NSS. To develop our students’ global perspectives, we continue to offer courses in French, Spanish and Japanese. In 2010-2011 a new program called the English Speaking Leagues was introduced to the school. Thanks to the Chairlady of the BOGF, Mrs Nellie Fong, six very successful and renowned native English speakers agreed to be volunteers in this program. Their role was to act as a captain and conduct conversation classes with small groups of students after school. They included Sir David Akers Jones, former Chief Secretary of Hong Kong, Sir T.L. Yang, former Chief of Justice, James Blake, Chief Officer of the KCR, David Dodwell, CEO of Strategic Acces, Anthea Strickland, Chairperson of the Minerology Society and Helen Seaton, former shipping merchant and wife of the British Consulate General Andrew Seaton. 80 students were involved from forms 1 through to 7. The yearly program culminated in a certificate ceremony where all of the students and their captains were able to share their experiences and mingle over a cup of tea. 12 Belilios Public School Annual School Report 2010-2011 Learning Outside of Hong Kong Apart from offering a broad and balanced curriculum, BPS is also committed to widening students’ exposure and extending their learning arena outside of the classroom. In 2010-2011, our students took part in 9 oversea trips to China, Taiwan, Singapore and United Kingdom. The most worth-mentioning was our service trip with the Lifeline Express to Guilin. Students observed how volunteer doctors performed cataract operations for poor farmers and children in the impoverished regions of China. They met with the medical personnel, went to the base hospital and visited the patients recovering at their homes. Through all these, they could see the selfless contribution of the medical personnel, helping the patients out of their miserable conditions. It was such an eye-opening experience that students have become more reflective and appreciative of what they have. In the coming years, we will continue to organize such life-changing experiences for our students so that they could become responsible and mature persons. Support for Student Development A whole-school approach was adopted to facilitate students’ whole-person development. Pastoral services encompassing Careers Guidance, Cross-curricular Programmes, Discipline, ECA, Community Services, Environmental Education, Guidance & Counselling and Moral, Civic and National Education echoed the school’s genuine commitment in fostering student development. Three periods of Life-wide Learning in Day 4 afternoon was structured in the timetable which facilitated the implementation of a rich variety of student-centred activities. To help students with financial difficulties, funding from the School-based After-school Learning and Support Programme and the Jockey Club Life-wide Learning Fund was fully utilized to ensure that every student could have the opportunity to broaden their exposure, explore new frontiers and develop global perspectives which are essential for young people in the era of changes. Our school has been most fortunate to have parents and alumni with shared vision and commitment. The Parents-Teachers’ Association (PTA) Education Fund made generous donations of prizes and scholarships, subsidized ECA activities, upgraded school facilities as well as provided immediate relief to students with unexpected financial difficulties. Measures to Cater for Learning Diversity The diversity of students’ learning ability is addressed through the following ways: Provision of a broad and balanced curriculum with a wide range of subject choices Curriculum planning, tailoring and adaptation to cater for diverse abilities Adoption of collaborative learning strategies to promote peer learning and support Adaptations to assessment to recognize different abilities Enhancement and enrichment programmes for the gifted and the less abled students Deployment of various grants to employ extra teachers and supporting staff Ethos building to recognize diversity and individual differences 13 Belilios Public School Annual School Report 2010-2011 120TH ANNIVERSARY EVENTS The celebration of the 120th anniversary of the school continued into 2011. The 120th Anniversary Dinner in November 2010 was a resounding success. With alumni coming back from Canada, Australia, England and many other countries, there were a total of 66 tables. They were treated to a performance by 4 alumni performing a song from the Pirates of Penzance. To give the participants a memorable evening, the 4 alumni practised for months and even had costumes made specifically for the occasion. Former principals and teachers mingled with graduates, reminiscing about good old times. The night was a night of nostalgia and fond memories. For the 120th Anniversary Sports Day in December, the school had the great fortune of having the former Olympic Table Tennis Gold medalist, Zhang Yi Ning (張怡寧), as the guest of honour. In addition to presenting the prizes, her gracious gesture of taking photos with all the students warmed everyone’s heart at the stadium amidst the cold of winter. The Open Days were held in April with many stalls organized by different clubs and teams. Besides the games and stalls, the PTA had organized a gala performance, to raise funds for the school. Modeled after the Tung Wah Charity Show, the show featured performances by teachers and students as well as parents. The performers practised hard before the show and their efforts were rewarded. The response to the Gala Performance was tremendous with everyone having a wonderful time. To cap off the celebratory events, there was the 120th Anniversary Concert ‘Accendere’ held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium on 18th July 2011. The concert was a showcase of the music talents of the school, with performances by the Symphonic Band, the Symphonic Orchestra, the String Orchestra, the Chinese Orchestra and the School Choir as well as a mini musical. Moreover, Queen’s College, Wah Yan College Kowloon and Ying Wa College showed their support by joining the chorus. After months of preparation and practice, over 450 teachers, students and alumni joined hands to stage an enthralling show. Music is a light joining BPS girls together. Not only was the Concert a way for them to show their sense of belonging to the school, but also a chance to show the strong sense of sisterhood fostered throughout the years. That was why there were alumni in all the performances, be it the Symphonic Orchestra or the Choir. Besides, there was the BOGA Choir and their conductor, Mrs Jennie Leung, a former music teacher. Alumni were even present in the mini-musical, helping to make it exhilarating and dynamic. As the name of the concert, Accendere, suggests, the concert filled the audience with warmth and joy. 14 Belilios Public School Annual School Report 2010-2011 SUPPORT FOR STUDENT DEVELOPMENT Life-wide Learning (2010-2011) The Life-wide Learning (LWL) Committee worked very effectively in compiling the framework of the Life-wide Learning Curriculum which provided a variety of LWL activities for students. To nurture students who continuously collaborate to strive for excellence in their pursuit of knowledge Achievements and Reflections: A wide range of life-wide learning activities were organized, ranging from forums, workshops, camps, talks, drama, visits, interest classes, quiz competitions to community services. Most students agreed that their horizons were broadened and they gained relevant exposure and experience. The senior forms were given the choice to arrange one self-directed learning activity in line with their interests and needs. Participants gave positive feedback for their active involvement in planning and organizing programmes. The school will continue to emphasize the provision of interesting and meaningful activities to enhance students’ learning outcomes. Cyber learning was successfully promoted as all subject departments had created at least one online assignment or quiz for students. Most teachers managed to adopt information technology in teaching and the frequency of uploading learning materials to eClass for student learning had increased. Students were able to use proper information technology tools in doing project work. It was encouraging that students demonstrated a safer and more responsible attitude towards receiving and sharing information on the internet. The Reading to Learn programmes had been designed on a thematic basis and integrated with writing tasks, namely ‘Biography Reading’ for S1, ‘Reading through Illustrative Stories and Books of Life and Art’ for S2, ‘Reading through Magazines’ for S3. Most students enjoyed reading the variety of books and magazines and completed the assignments with good performance. In addition, the school had established a ‘Drop Everything and Read’ programme for years to promote independent reading and there was an overall improvement in the reading atmosphere. It was encouraging to notice that students gradually developed self-directed learning habits and participated actively in the online tests of the Science and English Reading Programme. In most classroom observations, teachers frequently created opportunities for students to engage in interactive and cooperative activities with their peers. A student-centered pedagogy would further be promoted to enhance the effectiveness of learning and teaching. 2. To maintain a team of dedicated and professional staff who unceasingly learn to excel and teach to inspire: Achievements and Reflections: This year teachers conducted cross department peer lesson observation and made self-review through peer discussion. To facilitate the sharing of teaching materials, resource banks were developed by each subject department in the school intranet. Peer mentoring between experienced and new teachers as well as sharing best practices and teaching resources would continue be implemented with fine-tuning. The S1 project ‘Our Health Our Choice’ was jointly organized by the Departments of Physical Education, Food and Technology, Music, Visual Arts and Computer Literacy. Students proposed a healthy diet and designed a set of physical exercise targeted at specific health 18 Belilios Public School Annual School Report 2010-2011 problems. Some of them composed music in demonstrating movement exercise and produced a booklet with the use of art and information technology skills. Their projects were exhibited on School Open Days. Students agreed that it was a good chance for them to cooperate with others and relate knowledge and concepts gained in different learning areas. However, the number of lesson periods for cultural subjects was limited and thence subject teachers needed to give guidance and supervision outside of school hours. Moreover, it was reflected that the topic seemed too complicated for S1 students. The Departments of Mathematics, Visual Arts and Physical Education jointly designed a project on ‘Mathematics in Art, Music, Sports and Daily life’ for S2. Most students demonstrated their skills in data collection and produced quality projects which were presented on School Open Days. The projects offered a worthwhile experience for students to explore the applications of mathematics in different fields. However, the practical applications of mathematical knowledge to some fields were beyond students’ conceptual understanding and the project topics should be carefully chosen. 19 Belilios Public School Major Concern 2: Annual School Report 2010-2011 To equip students with knowledge & foster among them a set of core and sustaining values conducive to the betterment of their communities. Achievements and Reflections: The steering committee closely monitored the progress of the programmes, co-ordinated with various functional teams and encouraged greater collaboration among them. The programmes organized aim at fostering students’ whole person development, shaping their attitude and nurturing them to be caring global citizens. The Open Day, with the theme ‘Hearth’ to promote the sense of belonging (Home) and care for the earth (Earth) was organized collaboratively with the Belilios Public School Parents-Teachers Association and the Student Union. Strong team spirit was exhibited by the Principal Ms. Ho and the teachers as they presented awesome performances in the fund raising talent show and raised a sum of $103,462.00. The BPS Parents-Teachers Association volunteers sweated to raise a sum of $15,317.00 from the sale of cookies. All the funds were donated to the school to update the facilities and sponsor extra-curricular activities. To cultivate the core values of compassion, and care the Community Services Unit arranged a wide spectrum of community services for the students. The launch of the Service on Saturdays (SOS) for Lau Tak Yung Memorial Primary School in Tuen Mun allowed students and teachers to collaborate closely to organize activities for the primary students such as guided tours to Hong Kong. Our girls had a better understanding of students from low-income families and learnt the need to care for the less fortunate in the community. Another useful platform for values education is the Life-wide Learning lessons, during which visits, ,leadership training camps, Environmental Protection Leadership Training Camp, talks, Inter-class Science Quiz Competition and forums would be arranged to nurture them to be global citizens and passionate future leaders. In the past year, students also had the chance to go on study tours to Beijing and Hubei of China, Singapore, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Germany and participated in the Lifeline Express Tour to Guilin to widen their frontiers. Such eye-opening experiences definitely widened their exposure, enhanced their generic skills and made them more mature. 20 Belilios Public School Major Concern 3: Annual School Report 2010-2011 Prepare for the New Senior Secondary (NSS) Curriculum NSS curriculum and allocation of subjects The School-based NSS curriculum was further refined by deleting two electives, namely one Combined Science (Physics and Biology) and Information and Computer Technology and adding Visual Arts so as to cater for the needs of students. In order to cater for learner’s diversity, there are three application periods for students to apply for the dropping of electives. Several applications of Applied Learning Programme were processed. The successful applicants could receive more diversified training according to their interests. With the allocation of the Diversity Learning Grant, several Gifted Programmes were offered. As a result, the potentials of some high-achievers were further stretched by attending the courses in Liberal Studies, Chinese and Mathematics. Teachers were well-equipped for NSS by attending different NSS training courses run by EDB or other education institutes. Liberal Studies curriculum S1-S3 LS curriculum has been refined with the addition of more related concepts of NSS Liberal Studies and enquiry of the latest social issues. With collective efforts, teaching and learning materials for NSS Modules 2, 3 and Module 6 were effectively tailored. The effectiveness of collaborative teaching and standardization meetings was obvious and professional sharing among teachers was recognized. The first cohort of students have smoothly completed their Independent Enquiry Studies for Liberal Studies. They reflected that they have learnt to be independent learners and acquired relevant study skills along the way. Life-wide Learning Multifarious programmes and activities were organized in the Life-wide Learning periods. Self-directed activities were also introduced in which senior form students were given a chance to organize their own Life-wide learning programmes. Student Learning Profile With the introduction of Student Learning Profile, S1- S5 students have bought their i-portfolio accounts and gradually built up the habit of self-reflection on both their academic and non-academic studies. This year, S2 and S5 students have uploaded one Chinese and English Language assignments respectively. To enhance the abilities of the academically low achievers in learning Mathematics at S1 and S3 Late September To hire one part-time Mathematics teacher 2010 – May 2011 – for 1 year to conduct remedial lessons for 5/09 the low achievers at S1 and S3 levels (2 groups for 22 weeks) 3. To stretch further the potentials of the high achievers in Mathematics at S1 –S3 Late September 2010 – May 2011 To buy service for running the enrichment lesson at S1 to S3 levels (3 groups for 18 weeks) To buy service for running the Intermediate Olympiad for S2 & S3 students for 15 hours respectively 4. To enhance the potential and the learning of the academically low achievers in English at S1 to S2 levels Sept 2010 – June 2011 To employ an experienced part-time English teacher for 1 year to conduct remedial lessons for 2 groups of students at S1 and S2 levels (3 hours per week per group for 24 weeks) 5.
