First Annual Pet Parade!
In celebration of 40 life-saving years, P.A.W.S. of Tinley Park was proud to
host their First Annual Pet Parade on September 14, 2014. After a brief
meeting with Mayor Zabrocki and the Village of Tinley Park in 2013, we
brainstormed ideas of how the Village could help us celebrate our 40th
anniversary. Mayor Zabrocki suggested a Pet Parade. This small idea
turned into a huge event.
We were excited to have Anthony Ponce from
NBC5 as our Grand Marshall. Almost 40 different organizations walked in the
parade down Oak Park Avenue ranging from Central Middle School’s Marching
Band, to local animal rescue groups and local businesses.
Immediately following the parade, we had a party in the Metra parking lot in
downtown Tinley Park with over 40 vendors. We were able to offer spaces at
the party to all non-profit animal organizations at no cost. Our goal was to
raise awareness of our shelter and animal adoption over pet shops. Many of
the participating rescue groups were able to get animals adopted or potential new foster families
from this event. We are also very thankful for many of the participating vendors and local businesses
that helped to support the after party.
The kids in attendance were engaged by the face painters, balloon animals, DJ and our very own duck
pull from the fountain. Wooden Paddle Pizza was gracious enough to set up their traveling oven and
donate a portion of their sales to the shelter.
While it was only our first ever Pet Parade, the Village received such an amazing
response that we are hopeful to make this an annual event to not only raise
awareness in our community but also to help to raise some much needed funds
for our animals.
And last, but certainly not least, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude
to the many people that helped make the parade a huge success. The Village of
Tinley Park provided support from almost every single department ranging from
events, marketing, public works, police, fire, etc. We also could not have made it
happen without the hundred or so volunteers that showed up the day of the
event to set-up, clean-up, walk dogs, drive vans, pick up tables, sell t-shirts, trim
nails, etc. Together we accomplished something truly amazing!

and plan to adopt a cat or dog after the

Nearly 500 shelter friends celebrated our very special 40th anniversary with
us at The Odyssey Country Club on March 21, 2014. The night was packed
with excitement!
We were incredibly honored to have Mr. Andy Avalos of Channel 5 News
celebrate with us this year. Mr. Avalos flawlessly played both the emcee and
auctioneer for the event. His love and commitment to animals in need was
apparent in every heartfelt word.

In celebrating 40 years of volunteerism, shelter President Vicki Dean
honored founders Pat Siemsen and Carol Goldsberry for their courage and
determination to make a difference. Sue Arends, Jan Riley and Barb Dampier
were honored for their commitment to our mission for over 30 years!
We premiered our new shelter video, produced and donated by Intersport
Sports & Entertainment Marketing Company, Chicago. They succeeded in
capturing the true essence of the shelter - our volunteers. (To view our video, please click the link below.) Shopping
was on everyone’s agenda with over 180 silent auction packages offering everything from luxurious hotel stays in
Galena to one-of-a-kind sports memorabilia. Die-hard White Sox fans bid for fabulous tickets in the first row behind
the Sox dugout, while the White Sauvignon fans cleared out our first-ever ‘Wine Grab’ in under an hour! .
While Mike LaMantia of Midnight Mike’s Mobile DJ was busy getting the
crowd onto the dance floor, Waylon the wonder dog was busy working the
crowd collecting dollars in support of his canine and feline friends. Magician
Frankie Ace wowed our guest with his sleight-of-hand tricks.
To everyone who attended or supported our 40th anniversary gala, and
everyone who helps bring our vision to life, thank you. Thank you for
knowing that each and every animal matters. And when they don’t matter
to anyone else, they matter to us. Your support has helped us save over
24,000 lives since our beginning.
Thanks to your support here tonight, a shelter animal will know that
someone does care.

Zoonotic Diseases

With all the media attention focusing on Ebola, people are starting to become more concerned about their pets and catching diseases from them or whether or not they can
give their cold or flu to their pet. There are some diseases (zoonotic diseases) that humans can get passed to them from animals by several means: inhalation, contact with
broken skin, ingestion, or contact with mucous membranes and eyes.
Nearly everything you can catch from your dog or cat is preventable and treatable. Properly washing your hands after handling animals is the best prevention along with keeping
your pets healthy and vaccinated. Here are some of the diseases your pet may be sharing
with you:
The most contagious disease is Ringworm, (which is not a worm or parasite); it is a fungal infection of the skin, which can
survive for months on items like clothes and bedding before transferring to your pet. Cats and horses are more susceptible
to ringworm infestation. It is preventable by washing hands, wearing gloves if your pet is infected, and making sure pet
bedding and blankets are washed regularly. Symptoms on your pets would include skin lesions, patches of hair loss with
a red mark in the center. Symptoms on people also include red, circular patches on the skin. It is easily treated with prescription medication including pills and ointments.
Another disease that your pet can share with you is Giardia. Usually found in dogs, this is a waterborne organism that
lives in ponds, streams even puddles in your backyard. This can cause bloody diarrhea in the animals and if spread to humans we can have similar symptoms including diarrhea and gastrointestinal cramping. People can get it by coming in contact with infected animals especially puppies and kittens, that is why it is important to wash your hands after handling
your pets, especially before eating or using the restroom. Both humans and pets can be treated with prescription medication. The best prevention for this is to make sure you have clean drinking water available to your pet and to clean up
after your dog, coming in contact with your pets’ feces, or another animal coming in contact with it can help to spread
the disease.
Rabies is the most well-known zoonotic disease, but in the past century it has become more rare, especially with most
cities requiring annual rabies vaccinations. It was once considered a fatal disease and was easily transmitted by the animal’s
saliva either through a bite to the skin or saliva getting inside an open wound on a person. The disease is still very present
in wild animals including bats, raccoons and skunks. Some symptoms you may see in your pet include behavioral changes,
loss of appetite, foaming at the mouth and staggering when walking. Human symptoms include general weakness,
headache, confusion, flu-like symptoms and possible hallucinations. Treatment is needed immediately, left untreated it
is almost always fatal. If you think your pet was exposed contact your veterinarian immediately.

Meet Ella
Ella and her 9 puppies
were rescued from the streets of Posen in
July of 2014 by Jennifer Rogalny. Ella had
lived her life on the streets, scrounging for
food, seeking shelter wherever available. Ella has been
treated for heartworm. Once Ella is cleared medically by
the vet, she will be available for adoption.
To date, all the puppies have been adopted. Ella needs a
family that accepts her past and will keep her safe.
Despite her rough start, Ella is a very happy, sweet, loving
dog. If you can open up your home to this beautiful,
courageous girl and help her spend her first Christmas in
a home with a family of her own, please contact P.A.W.S.

Santa is Coming!
Come visit PAWS at the Subaru dealership in Orland Park on Saturday December 13th
from 10am-1pm. Bring your family, cats and dogs to get their picture taken with Santa for
a lasting holiday memory! Don’t have a pet? No problem, PAWS will be there with plenty
of our adoptable animals to help you find your furry soul mate. Subaru will be
serving lunch and handing out goody bags to all that attend!
PAWS will also be part of the Subaru “Share the Love” event from

Students at Fulton School located in Tinley Park
have “Big Hearts” for the homeless pets at PAWS.
Fulton Brownie Troop 60282 made blankets and
rope pull toys, to help the dogs pass their time
while waiting for their forever home. The girls
also collected items from the shelter’s Wish List.
“These boys and girls earn an A+ in compassion”
Fifth grader, Faith Reilly, also from Fulton School wrote a letter to the
Southtown newsletter when she was in third grade. The letter was
called “Think Adoption” below is her letter:
Dear Editor,
My name is Faith Reilly and I am 9 years old and live in Tinley Park.
I am trying to stop puppy mills.
Puppy mills are places where people breed mother dogs and they
have as many litters as fast as they can, then they sell the puppies
to pet stores. But the puppies are actually very sick when they
come from the puppy mills and some puppies die. Mother dogs
have to spend their entire lives in a cage. So you see puppy mills
are very bad. So I’m trying to get the word out to everyone
because every year people have to pay a lot of vet bills, then they
have to get rid of their dog so lots of dogs don’t have homes.
I think everyone should buy their dogs at shelters.

Fifth grader, Gina Zientara, donated the proceeds
from all the odd jobs she has done. One of the
many jobs she worked was with her mom at the
Tinley Park Farmer’s Market. This isn’t the first
time that Gina helped the shelter. Last summer
she made and sold rainbow loom bracelets.
Fulton’s Student Council collected food, paper
towels, collars and toys to help PAWS’ homeless
animals have a more pleasant stay.
Ashton Brooke, Maddie Brooke and Hanne
Forster had a Kool Aid stand this summer and
raised $115.00 in just two days. AND, THEY
DIDN’T EVEN SELL ANY Kool Aid. What’s funny
about this fundraiser is that their neighbors didn’t
buy anything to drink but did give generous
monetary donations.

Many boys and girls asked their family and friends to buy items for
the shelter instead of receiving birthday gifts. Other children had
lemonade stands, NJHS project, garage sales, bake sales, dropped off
flyers to neighbors requesting and collecting donations for PAWS and
there were two children who even put on a play.

Hannah Rahm and her brother Nolan really enjoy
helping out at the shelter. Several times this
dynamic duo could be seen at the shelter early
on a Saturday morning. They would help stamped
thousands of envelopes needed for fundraisers,
fold laundry, take out the trash and Hannah’s
favorite thing to do is organize. She really enjoys
straightening up the closet and organizing the dog
and cat can food in the cabinets. This brother and
sister team are extremely hard workers that truly
lending a hand.

Four Ways
Retractable
Leashes Can Be
Dangerous
Retractable leads are long leashes that extend to allow
your dog to roam freely. According to the ASPCA and many
veterinarians it might be time to ditch it. Here’s why:
1. The leash can get caught on you, your dog, a cyclist or
jogger and cause tripping, rope burn, cuts and even
strangulation.
2. When you use a retractable leash, you’re opening your
dog up to all sorts of danger, including those posed by
less-friendly dogs, bikes and cars. You may not be able
to hit the brakes in time.
3. Retractable leashes allow your dog to approach other
dogs uninvited. Other pet parents may not want their
dog to greet your dog for a variety of reasons, including
your own dog’s health and safety.
4. Perhaps worst of all, should you drop the leash in a busy
area, its sudden retraction and the noise the handle
makes when dragging on pavement can terrify even the
most even- heeled dogs. That means your dog is much
more likely to bolt.
These are just four reasons why not to use retractable
leashes and we’re sure there are many more. The ASPCA
is recommending the good old six-foot leash when you’re
on busy streets.
