Planning your holiday 5 Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos travel tips The hard part is over; you’ve decided where to go; now it comes down to the organising. Sometimes it is the basic things that we tend to forget so Qantas Holidays has compiled some tips to simplify your planning. k Climate l Public Holidays in Laos Southeast Asia’s weather throughout Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos is subject to a monsoon season (May to October), which along with extreme heat in some places during the year, (June, July and August), means that typically the best times to travel are during late winter months and spring, although the fall harvest season can be pleasant as well. 13-15 Apr 14 1 May 14 6 May 14 1 Jun 14 2 Dec 14 l Public Holidays in Vietnam 9 Apr 14 30 Apr 14 1 May 14 2 Sep 14 Hung Kings Commemoration Liberation Day Labour Day National Day l Public Holidays in Cambodia 14-16 Apr 14 Khmer New Year Day 1 May 14 International Labor Day 13-15 May 14 King’s Birthday, Norodom Sihamoni 1 Jun 14 International Children Day 18 Jun 14 King’s Mother Birthday, Norodom Monineath Sihanouk 22-24 Sep 14 Pchum Ben Day 24 Sep 14 Constitutional Day 15 Oct 14 Commemoration Day of King’s Father, Norodom Sihanouk 23 Oct 14 Paris Peace Agreements Day 29 Oct 14 King’s Coronation Day, Norodom Sihamoni 5-7 Nov 14 Water Festival Ceremony 9 Nov 14 Independence Day 10 Dec 14 International Human Rights Day Lao New Year Labour Day Buddha’s Day Children’s Day National Day j Currency Vietnam currency is the Dong. In Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, visitors can show respect for the local culture by following a few simple guidelines: • If you wish to photograph someone, ask first • Dress appropriately when visiting a temple or watching a ceremony • Public displays of affection are not acceptable • Shoe removing is a custom when entering temples, private homes and some shops and restaurants In Laos and Cambodia, when greeting locals, practise ‘nop’ (Laos) or ‘sompeyar’ (Cambodia) by placing both palms together and on a chest level with fingers facing up. Slowly move your head forward as if making a bow. e Important documents Please check the passport and visa requirements with your travel consultant or the appropriate embassy/consular office before you travel. And we strongly recommend that you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy, when you book your holiday. Then drive through the city centre built by the French, with its tree-lined boulevards, old ochre coloured buildings and modern sky scrapers to the site of the former US Embassy before visiting the Reunification Palace and War Remnants Museum. Also travel to Cholon, Saigon’s Chinese district, visiting Binh Tay market and Thien Hau temple. Visit the famous guerilla tunnels at Cu Chi, approximately 70 kilometres northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Journey west from Ho Chi Minh City to Cu Chi. On arrival you will be guided through the famous tunnels used by the communist guerrillas during the Vietnam War. The tunnel network stretches for over 250km and extends over three levels underground, providing you with a remarkable insight into the hardships, courage, determination and terror of a guerrilla war. Travel south to the Mekong Delta. Known as the ‘rice bowl’ of Vietnam, the Delta is the most fertile region in the country. From My Tho, cruise to one of the islands located in the middle of the Mekong River. On the island visit a fruit orchard and sample some local produce, before boarding a smaller sampan that winds along narrow canals. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit a local family’s house, enjoy their hospitality and share with them some tea or rice wine. After lunch (included) return to Ho Chi Minh City. Hoi An was once Vietnam’s most active trading centre over many centuries and the Old Town has been largely preserved. The architecture of the city reflects the influence of Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, French and British traders. You will visit a traditional ancient house, the Hoi An Museum, a Chinese assembly hall and the Japanese Covered Bridge. Drive to My Son, the former holy land of the Champa people, who occupied this area of Vietnam from the 2nd to the 17th century. In My Son you will find some amazing religious monuments built during the Champa dynasty, though unfortunately war and years of neglect has seen many of the structures fall into ruin. About 80,000 Cham people still live in various parts of Vietnam and are religiously and culturally distinct. Visit Hoi An’s colourful market and experience the amazing sights, sounds and aromas; interact with local sellers and learn about the local produce. Then board the Red Bridge boat for a leisurely cruise (25 minutes) along the Hoi An River to the Red Bridge Cooking School. Explore the cooking school’s herb garden, before learning about some well-known dishes. The cooking lesson runs for about 2 hours. Included in the class is a brief introduction to Vietnamese food carving. After the lesson, sit down and eat what you have cooked.
