In northern temperate countries, the leaves are changing as the weather becomes cooler. And at southern latitudes, winter has ended and temperatures are starting to rise. Here in Southeast Asia, the weather remains warm and pleasant with slightly cooler evenings. Over the past several months, our team has been hard at work on our product catalogue, adding new and attractive products and revising existing products to better meet the needs of our partners and clients. Our product offerings have been refined based on client feedback and we are now prepared for season when most foreign visitors travel to Southeast Asia. In our final newsletter for 2012, we are proud to introduce some new excursions which have been developed by our product team over the summer. One such product is a number of culinary adventures to introduce guests to the unique cuisine of central Vietnam. Another excursion is to a small, traditional village, located outside of Yangon, Myanmar. And, we are proud to introduce an excursion in Hanoi wherein guests can learn about the art of Vietnamese calligraphy. As an increasing number of people are aware, Myanmar is rapidly opening up to the outside world. Diplomatic processes in motion to allow more foreign investment into the country and the number of airlines introducing service to the nation is amazing. Have a look at our travel section to for some of the details on all of the flights available to Yangon, and check the hotels and resorts updates for information on new hotels and newly planned foreign investment. The ninth annual International Travel Exhibition was held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from 12 to 14 September. Vidotour was an exhibitor we were pleased to see turnout and interest in this travel exposition. Furthermore, Vidotour will be present at the World Travel Market in London from 5 to 8 November. Please stop by and say hello if you will be in attendance. We will be in booth AS383 in the South Hall. As the end of the year and the holidays approach, we at Vidotour would like to send our best wishes and the greetings of the season to all of our clients and partners throughout the world. Yours Sincerely, Ms. Nguyen Tuyet Mai President & CEO Savour the flavours of Hue & Hoi An 6 | Newsletter oct . dec 2012 Fujian assembly hall - Hoi an Newsletter oct . dec 2012 | 7 Banh beo Cuisine from the central region of Vietnam is unique in the nation. It is known for different flavours and a little more spice than the cuisines from the northern and southern regions of the country. Vidotour is proud to introduce three new excursions in the central area of Vietnam that highlight the unique cuisine found here. A new morning excursion from Vidotour in Hue gives guests the opportunity to see the production process of, and try their hand at making, some of the one-of-a-kind savoury cakes that are famous throughout the nation. Guests will visit the Me Tu House in Hue where “banh chung,” a Lunar New Year necessity, is produced using sticky rice, mung bean, pork and spices. This type of savoury rice cake is formed into a square and wrapped in leaves, making it easy to store and transport, if needed. After this, guests will be taken to the Ba Do House, where they will learn about making other unique types of savoury cakes such as “banh beo,” “banh nam” and “banh bot loc.” Guests will have the opportunity to make these cakes themselves, under the supervision of the local pâtissier, and then stay for lunch to enjoy the fruit of their labours. Another option for the afternoon in Hue allows guests a slightly different perspective on Hue’s local specialties. This particular excursion will bring guests to the Ba Do house, but that is where the similarities with the morning excursion end. In the afternoon, guests can taste, learn about and see the local production of a type of snack called “me xung.” 8 | Newsletter oct . dec 2012 “ Guests will have the opportunity to make these cakes themselves, under the supervision of the local pâtissier. m e ” xu ng This sweet treat is well-known throughout Vietnam, and domestic tourists visiting Hue will almost always purchase it and bring it back to their family and friends. Made with sugar, peanuts and sesame seeds, “me xung” goes very well with a cup of hot tea. The final stop of the afternoon is at snack shop that sells sweet soup, made with mung beans, coconut milk and other local ingredients. However, sweet soup is quite sweet, and if guests prefer, the afternoon can be concluded with a cup of tea or coffee at a local cafe. The historic town of Hoi An, which is about 140km south of Hue, also has its own unique cuisine. Specifically for this location, we are proud to introduce our first “dine around” Banh chung experience in Vietnam. Since the town is rather small and walking around is easy, Vidotour can prearrange a number of reservations at local restaurants and snack shops which will be a great introduction to the flavors and cuisine of Hoi An. Guests are provided with detailed maps directing them to the locations, as well as additional recommendations on what to order. Then, guests are on their own to explore the town and its cuisine at their own pace. Ideally, this dine around experience would be scheduled after a guided walk around central Hoi An to learn about the history of the town. A trip through the central region of Vietnam is sure to be a highlight to any visitor traveling through the nation. And there is no better way to enjoy a locale than to learn about and tasted some of the compelling cuisine from the region. Houses are painted and new clothes are bought so that the new year begins with a fresh start. Lucky money is given to children in red envelopes and many wishes of success, prosperity, health and happiness are exchanged. Feasts with traditional Tet food are prepared for visiting relatives and friends, and everyone is expected to return to their place of birth for this most important holiday of the year. “Nôm” Calligraphy In the past, education in Vietnam revolved mainly around the study of literature. In these times before the printing press, writing and calligraphy was an important and admired skill of scholars. At first a skill of the scholarly class of society, calligraphy became to be appreciated throughout all of Vietnamese culture, where education has always been valued. In more recent times, as part of the preparation for Tet, people would visit a local scholar or temple and request traditional calligraphy of a word or phrase, which would be hung in an important place within the house, such as near the family alter. These words or phrases would be things such as “prosperity” or “longevity,” and of course, hanging these parchments in one’s house would be considered an auspicious act. Perhaps more importantly, many Vietnamese people believe that hanging calligraphy in an eminent place within their house will help their children achieve success in their studies. Vidotour is proud to introduce an excursion in Hanoi where small groups of guests can visit the house of a man who Ong Do 14 | Newsletter oct . dec 2012 “ The image of an aged scholar, wearing traditional Vietnamese garb while skillfully and artistically creating beautiful works of calligraphy is iconic in the Vietnamese culture. ” is skilled in the art of Vietnamese calligraphy. Traditionally, a learned man or scholar was referred to as an “Ong Do.” The image of an aged scholar, wearing traditional Vietnamese garb while skillfully and artistically creating beautiful works of calligraphy is iconic in the Vietnamese culture. Guests on this excursion will meet an “Ong Do” and get a brief introduction to the art of Vietnamese calligraphy while enjoying sweets and sipping on green tea. The “Ong Do” will create personalized calligraphy for all guests and present it, along with his best wishes. Guests will depart with a newfound appreciation for Vietnamese fine art and a souvenir to take home and remember the experience by. This unique experience is available for small groups with a maximum of five people, but there is limited availability during the time around Tet.
