July 24 - Kirk in the Hills
K C P H (U.S.A.) SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 24, 2016 Truth is it’s time To stop playing these games. We need a word For the people’s pain. So Lord speak right now. Let it pour like rain. Oh, yeah, we’re desperate. We’re chasing after you. No rules, no religion I’ve made my decision To run to You, The healer that I need… Take me to the King. I don’t have much to bring. My heart’s torn in pieces. It’s my offering. Lay me at the throne. Leave me there alone. To gaze upon Your glory, And sing to You this song. Please take me to the King. — Tamela Mann Lyrics to “Take Me to the King” A Christ-centered Community Called to Deepen Faith, Serve Others and Foster Fellowship WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS Welcome to worship We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk, please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. About today’s service We are actually allowed to talk to God! We can have a conversation with the Creator of all things. How amazing is that?! What a gift! We as Christ’s disciples in the 21st century however, often find ourselves confused as to how to pray. We find ourselves unsure of how to use our gift, and we are desperate for an owner’s manual. Today we will talk about the gift of prayer, and be reminded of the simple instructions that Jesus gave his disciples so long ago. For as we all know, we are in much need of prayer these days. Rev. Tres Adams will preach the sermon titled “ASAP”. The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Provident Father, with the prayer your Son taught us always on our lips, we ask, we seek, we knock at your door. In every need, grant us the first and best of all your gifts, the Spirit who makes us your children. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen. (Book of Common Worship) If you have children Childcare is available for infants and children through age 3 from 9:00 a.m.-noon in the nursery (Abbey 24). Please drop off children in the nursery before the service. Following the Word with Children, during the 9:15 Garden Service, children ages 4-grade 2 are dismissed to a brief class in Heritage Hall. If you need audio or visual assistance Hearing assistance units, large-print bulletins and hymnals are available upon request from an usher. If you are in need of prayer You may submit prayer requests online at kirkinthehills.org/prayer-request/prayer-request form. Stephen Ministers are available are available for personal, confidential prayer after both Sunday worship services all summer long. After the 9:15 a.m. garden service, you can find a Stephen Minister at the banner located near the red door to the sanctuary from the Fireside patio. After the 11:00 a.m. service, you can meet with a Stephen Minister in Melrose Chapel. Join us for fellowship After the 9:15 a.m. service, we encourage worshippers to greet one another as they leave and assist visitors in finding their way to the coffee hour on the Patio. (Heritage Hall during inclement weather.) A garden memorial is presented to the glory of God in loving memory of June Alexis Jacobson by her husband, Al, her children, James, Mark and Jennifer. ON THE COVER— Celtic Cross Ken Taylor (1936-2015), a life-long Michigan artist, did the most recent line drawing of the altar Celtic cross shown on the cover of the bulletin. From the time he was a child growing up in Detroit, Ken was interested in art. His work has been shown in numerous juried exhibitions and at galleries throughout southeastern Michigan. Inspired by the St. Martin Cross from Iona Abbey in Scotland, Oscar Bach created the celtic cross. A gift from Mr. and Mrs. George Russell, it was placed on the altar in 1958 when the sanctuary was dedicated. The cross is highly adorned with Christian symbols: a harp at the top symbolizes joyful worship and joy in heaven; the Father is depicted with his face obscured by his hand held up in Trinitarian blessing; the crosspiece portrays the Te Deum; the Son is shown with his arms outstretched, reaching out to the whole world, inviting all to worship him; the descending dove represents the Holy Spirit; and the grape and the vine symbolize Holy Communion. 2 THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY 9:15 a.m., Garden Lord, teach us to pray... - Luke 11:1 THE GATHERING OPENING VOLUNTARIES WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP * OPENING HYMN Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! was wriFen by Bishop Reginald Heber for Trinity Sunday in 1827. It is based on Revelation 4: 8-11 and also expounds on the Nicene Creed. The tune was composed for this text and was named Nicaea because of the text’s connection with the Nicene Creed. Let All Who Pray the Prayer Christ Taught was wriFen by contemporary American hymn writer Thomas Troeger, and is an exposition of MaFhew 6: 9. Troeger is Professor of Preaching at Illiff Seminary, Denver, The tune is a psalm tune which dates from the sixteenth century. What a Friend We Have in Jesus was wriFen in the late nineteenth century by Joseph Scriven. There are a couple of stories regarding the circumstances which led to the writing of this hymn. One is that he wrote it out of grief upon the sudden, unexpected death of his bride the night before their wedding. Another is that he wrote it for his mother who was at the time extremely ill. The tune was composed by Charles Croat Converse (hence its name), a lawyer whose avocation was composing hymn tunes. Paul Bouman was active for many years as Director of Music of Grace Lutheran Church, River Forest, Illinois. I lift up my eyes to the hills. From whence does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved, He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel Will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade On your right hand. The sun shall not smite you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. The Lord will keep Your going out and your coming in From this time forth and for evermore. 10 (continued from page 6) WORSHIP NOTES 11 KMNO MP QRS HMTTU 1340 WSUQ LVPW LXOS RVXY BTVVZ[MSTY HMTTU, MM\RMWXP 48302 (248) 626-2515 ● kirkinthehills.org Office Hours Monday-Thursday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. We invite you to join us in ongoing Bible reading.
