In 2012 we successfully launched our New Jersey Needs You Fellows Program and due to its success, we are now building the foundation for national expansion. As a founding director, and now CEO, I could not be more inspired by our students and excited about the future of America Needs You. Our students, hailing from over forty colleges and universities, have achieved outstanding outcomes and they could not have done it alone. Over 96% of our students have persisted in college, compared to 11% of first-generation college students! In 2013 we had exceptional partners that spanned many industries and made a significant impact on our programs. Organizations like The Heckscher Foundation for Children, CUNY, Teach For America, Goldman Sachs and Macy’s were thought partners, internship As a founding director, and now CEO, I could not and volunteer sources and be more inspired by our students and excited about financial supporters. Nico attended the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and at the beginning, felt that the college process was “scary,” especially as a first-generation college student. “I knew I wanted to take advantage of every opportunity available, but didn’t know how. NYNY was the perfect program that could help me excel and maximize my strengths. I also needed guidance, and knew that a mentor could provide that.“ He credits NYNY and his Mentor Coach, Michael Duignan, as being instrumental to his individual and professional growth. “[NYNY] exposed me to several individuals who helped me shape my pursuits, specifically in academia. From talks on applying to graduate school, or speaking with volunteers and panelists that were professors in their field, NYNY helped me expand my horizons.” While in the Program, Nico interned at Community Connections for Youth, and has participated in the Latino Leadership Initiative Program at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Today, Nico is a Marshall Scholar at the University of Liverpool, where he is studying for an M.A. in Research Methods in Sociology and Social Policy. The Scholarship is another opportunity he pursued with the support of NYNY and his Mentor Coach. “NYNY and Michael helped me through the process, from editing my essays to prepping me for the interviews. Without them, my application would not have been nearly as strong.” “A huge thank you to NYNY for accepting me to be part of their program, which led me to meet some of the most amazing individuals in New York! Life is much brighter with them in my life.” Annual Report July 2012 – June 2013 9 COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRANSFER New York Needs You and New Jersey Needs You recognize the amazing potential of our community college Fellows, and provide support as they transfer to four-year colleges. Our professional development curriculum not only helps students secure and succeed in internships, but also builds skills that are critical to successfully transferring to a four-year college or university. Our staff and Mentor Coaches also provide individualized guidance and application support. To better serve these students, we have developed five additional sessions about the transfer process. These sessions feature panels of Fellow alumni who have transferred and guest speakers on financial aid and transfer from target campuses, and cover topics such as four-year school selection, scholarships and financial aid, required tests, application essays, and acclimating to a new campus. SAMPLE WORKSHOP TOPICS We are proud of the accomplishments of our community college Fellows; in FY13 100% of our students enrolled in community colleges transferred to universities, including City College, Columbia, Cornell, NYU and Rutgers University. Due to the success of our community college students, we have increased the number of community college students in our program. Over 30% of our 2013 Fellows, selected in May 2013, are community college students; we expect this number to continue to grow. 10 America Needs You FOUR-YEAR SCHOOL SELECTION SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID REQUIRED TESTS AND APPLICATION ESSAYS ACCLIMATING TO A NEW CAMPUS Annual Report July 2012 – June 2013 11 M D E CO E 55% FELLOW PROFILE FE FELLOW DIVERSITY NYNY and NJNY serve a diverse student population. Vashti moved from Guyana to the United States when she was very young. She was raised by her mother who sacrificed and struggled to give Vashti and her siblings the best. Vashti’s mother left high school to ensure that she could fully support her family. Still, she taught Vashti and her siblings to value education and hard work. “I made a personal vow to myself many years ago to excel, accomplish, and advance in everything that I do so that my mom could sleep easier at night. At the time I had no idea how to do that. The only thing that I knew was that I had to go to college if I was ever going to make that happen,” says Vashti. Now, she is an honors student at Hunter College, studying Economics, but admits that her first year in college was challenging, especially as a first-generation college student. “I felt lost in a big world that did not stop moving for one second. I had so many questions and I did not even know how to approach someone to ask for help,” she says. Fortunately, she discovered the NYNY program through a 2010 Fellow. “I looked the program up, and I remember getting goose bumps as I read the mission. It was exactly what I needed.” Vashti calls the NYNY program lifechanging. With the support of NYNY and Naeema, her Mentor Coach, Vashti has interned at Morgan Stanley and will begin an internship with Macy’s in summer 2014. She has learned to craft resumes and interview for jobs and feels confident because NYNY has forced her to be the “best possible version” of herself. When I applied to NYNY, I did not know that I would get professional development and gain a supportive family. Naeema has been one of her biggest advocates. “She compliments my personality perfectly, and we make an amazing team. NYNY has given me a mentor and friend for life.” * Family income less than $23,050 (federal threshold) LATINO America Needs You “Thinking about graduating from NYNY in May [2014] makes me very emotional. When I applied to NYNY, I did not know that I would get professional development and gain a supportive family. As the saying goes, family is forever. NYNY will always be with me. I was totally inspired. Before that, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan were merely big brand names to me. By networking with the panelists, I understood more what I wanted to be. By learning about their career paths, I had more clues about what I should do during college to prepare myself for my future career.” 18 America Needs You OUR VOLUNTEERS America Needs You offers multiple volunteer options across our two programs, ranging from a two-year one-on-one commitment as a Mentor Coach in the Fellows Program to a one-time or periodic commitment as a Career Coach in the Career Development Program. Mentor Coaches and Career Coaches play an active role in delivering the curriculum content at workshops. These volunteers serve on career exposure panels, co-facilitate sessions with industry-specific material, and are encouraged to provide real-world experiences that bring the curriculum to life. MENTOR COACHES Our Mentor Coaches are accomplished individuals, often rising stars at their respective firms. Mentor Coaches typically have three to seven years of work experience and additional honors including White House internships and Rhodes Scholarships. Their success is not merely defined by their professional achievements, but also by their dedication to giving back to their communities and participation in previous volunteer programs or nonprofit boards. CAREER COACHES Our Career Coaches are accomplished professionals with three or more years of experience who support the program at the professional development workshops and at the career exploration seminars. Annual Report July 2012 – June 2013 19 MENTOR COACH Q & A 1. Why NYNY? LINDSEY 2012 MENTOR COACH Lindsey is a 2012 NYNY Mentor Coach. She is currently the Director of College Relations at Macy’s. NYNY reached out to several recruiters in New York to participate in a mock interview day with the first NYNY class. Needless to say, I was impressed with the caliber of the Fellows! At the time, I was looking for an organization to get involved with on a meaningful level and this experience sold me. After that, I attended all of the recruiting events and was excited to submit my application and be selected as a Mentor Coach. 2. What makes your Fellow – Mentor Coach relationship work? We started talking about music at one of the first workshops and hit it off immediately. I think the foundation of our relationship is sincerity and positivity. I have always lived by the idea that anything is accomplishable and [Peneliope] validates that philosophy every day. With several internships under her belt and over one-hundred articles published online, she has accomplished so much in the past two years, and I am proud to have been a part of that journey. In this role, she leads the campus recruiting strategy for Macy’s New York At the end of the day, NYNY has validated my belief that people are good and kind. Headquarters and also manages the NYC Summer Internship program. Her Fellow, Peneliope, attends Baruch College and majors in Journalism and Management of Musical Enterprises. 3. What have you gained from participating in this program? At the end of the day, NYNY has validated my belief that people are good and kind. I see this in the Fellows, staff, Mentors and the greater NYNY network. Throughout the program, Mentor Coaches and Fellows often have to seek time, help, or expertise from our personal and professional networks in order to move towards our goals. Each time we do so we see that people are not only willing to help but are actually enthusiastic about going above and beyond what was asked. ANNUAL BENEFIT On September 12, 2012, more than 650 of our supporters attended the third annual Benefit Dinner at Cipriani 42nd Street. It was a memorable night where Fellows shared incredible stories about how the organization has impacted their lives and honorees Raymond J. McGuire and Bruce E. Mosler spoke of the importance of mentorship. With $1.4 million raised from the Benefit, we would like to thank everyone who made this Benefit a successful celebration of the work we do in our fight for economic mobility. 4. Why should others apply to be Mentor Coaches? Outside of our careers, there are very few structured “extra-curricular activities” for young professionals to get involved in that provide us with a strong sense of accomplishment and social connection. Being a Mentor Coach is amazing because it gives you the opportunity to set and achieve goals with your Fellow and develop your leadership skills, all while having fun with an incredible group of Fellows and Mentors. 20 America Needs You Annual Report July 2012 – June 2013 21 FINANCIAL ANALYSIS STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2013 THREE-YEAR FINANCIAL ANALYSIS (With comparative totals for the year ended June 30, 2012) 2012 2011 $1,585,189 2013 $2,730,484 $2,658,904 TOTAL INCOME TOTAL INCOME $985,437 PUBLIC SUPPORT: Contributions Special event income TOTAL INCOME $2,717,391 $2,389,403 EXPENSES EXPENSES TemporarilyTotal UnrestrictedRestricted 6/30/13 $1,209,929 $1,246,010 NET ASSETS NET ASSETS NET ASSETS Interest income Net assests released from restrictions Total public support RETURN ON INVESTMENT * Total supporting services *AS A % OF TOTAL PRO GR A M S P ENDI NG 77% 13% 10% $1,151,158 1,558,033 $1,207,389 1,434,023 21,293 233,404 (233,404) 21,293 0 17,492 0 (76,130) 2,730,484 2,658,904 2,091,585 2,091,585 1,680,536 265,360 360,446 265,360 360,446 253,023 455,844 625,806 708,867 0 2,717,391 2,389,403 2,806,614 EXPENSES: Program services Supporting services: • Management and general • Fundraising Total expenses PROGRAM SPENDING $993,884 $157,274 1,558,033 (net of direct expenses of $192,562 and $168,817) EXPENSES $948,066 Total 6/30/12 625,806 2,717,391 0 Change in net assets from operating activities 89,223 (76,130) 13,093 269,501 22,988 22,988 (7,638) (7,638) 36,081 261,863 200,000 1,209,929 948,066 NON-OPERATING ACTIVITIES: 2013 $2,091,585 FUNDRAISING SPENDING MANAGEMENT & GENERAL 2011 22,988 22,988 0 Change in net assets 112,211 2012 $1,680,536 Unrealized gain/(loss) on investments Total non-operating activities (76,130) Net assets - beginning of year Net assets - end of year 1,009,929 $1,122,140 $123,870 $1,246,010 $1,209,929 $591,907 Spending on Programs has risen every year. 22 America Needs You Annual Report July 2012 – June 2013 23 OUR SUPPORTERS CORPORATE PARTNERS CONTINUED INNOVATORS FOUNDATIONS $100K+ Frances Schultz Foundation The Heckscher Foundation for Children Hudson County Community College Foundation John P. and Anne Welsh McNulty Foundation $99.9-$25K David Geffen Foundation Edwin Gould Foundation Max and Sunny Howard Memorial Foundation Stella and Charles Guttman Foundation, Inc.
