Our Mission and Vision
Rogers Park Montessori School believes all of its students carry within them
the adults they will become. Our mission is to create an environment where
children are inspired to reach their highest potential as individuals and
learners by following the Montessori philosophy of education, which at its
core, strives to produce vital members of the global community.
Guiding all our practices is the education and promotion of peace within self,
in relationships and within the world.
Our vision is that each graduate will embody the following values:
• Pride in academic achievement
• A joy and thirst for discovery
• Self-reliance
• A sensitive and respectful regard for others
• The ability to collaborate
• An understanding of the interdependence of all that exists within the
global environment
• A sense of place and contribution in his/her community

A word from our Board President
Every year, a few steps forward--every ten years, a giant leap. This epithet describes Rogers Park Montessori School—a rich,
vibrant community always on a path of continuous improvement.
Every year, the administration and teachers make an active effort to
step back and evaluate the curriculum—what works, what doesn’t,
what can we try? They constantly stay in touch with the larger Montessori community in order to glean best practices. They look hard
at our operations and determine how to make the most out of every
school day—a complex exercise now that we are almost 400-children strong.
In 2004, we bought two acres of land and built a 45,000 square
foot building—an impressive undertaking for a little nonprofit
independent school. And then in 2014, we did it again. On September 26, 2014 we secured new financing and launched a major
expansion initiative to finish what we started in 2004. This year has
been about trucks and hardhats. Carpool routes and playground
schedules changed to accommodate the action. While the fast and
furious progress in the curtained-off construction zone was not always visible, the energy and anticipation was palpable. Downstairs,
little faces were pressed up against the glass in the downstairs gym
while the concrete columns were being poured.
We now have dedicated co-curricular rooms for our library, Spanish, drama, music, and the visual arts. We also have more space for
our Full Day children (Children’s House (3-6) after school programming) and our existing elementary students. And of course, we
have a dynamic new wing for our Middle School students, that they
helped to design! It will be tempting to rush boldly ahead filling up
closets and freshly painted walls, but it is now time once again to
take smaller steps, to ensure we continue on the path of strategic
decision-making as we move forward. Now, as we close out 2014-15
and a new school year unfolds, we are happy to dial it back a bit and
grow appropriately and steadily into our new skin.
For some, a change in paint color or a new carpool number is
enough to cause jitters. So, understandably, for children and
grown-ups alike our fresh new face will inspire some nervousness. But in spite of our architecturally fantastic learning environment,
we are still the same community that launched a Montessori
preschool in a church basement in 1966. Since then, in the face
of voluminous change, we have never lost sight of who we are,
and we never will. Our vision is unwavering, our core values are
in place and our leadership is steadfast. Principal Debbie SenoffLangford and her team have an astute ability to revisit who we are
and what we stand for on a daily basis.
We owe enormous gratitude to:
- Alderman O’Connor who has always championed our institution;
- Bulley & Andrews, which kept the project moving smoothly while
managing complicated site logistics with grace and courtesy (they
must all be Montessorians!);
- Jeremy Olsen, our lead architect during the construction phase,
who has a love for our school that goes well above and beyond
professional obligation and specializes in solving problems while
keeping everyone smiling;
- George Beach, our lead design architect, who had the vision to
kick the adults out of the room and start the design process with
the Aspen students—and has been our rock and feather ever
since.
Now the big question is, what will happen in 2024? Will we build
a rocket? Will we discover a new solar system? We are still catching our breath from our recent expansion and will take ample time
to evolve our programs and grow into our new space, but it certainly is fun to look ahead. Will we build a greenhouse or weather
station? Start an endowment? Fly to the moon? Given our track
record, the possibilities feel endless.

2014-2015 Principal Report
Our community has grown tremendously over the last several years
and despite the increase in numbers, we have seen the commitment of our families to the community grow stronger. I am not
surprised, because while the school can be the conduit for creating
opportunities for these relationships to form, it is up to the community as a whole to make it happen. To this end, I want to thank
our parents and faculty for finding opportunities to connect with
each other enabling RPMS to instill in the children the values and
principles, which we all hold dear.
RPMS has placed a high value on attracting a diverse student and
faculty population. Having both an Outreach Coordinator as well
as parent and faculty Diversity and Inclusion Committees to set
strategic goals, our values of peace education and a ‘sensitive and
respectful regard for others’ are nurtured and actively taught. This
year our teachers participated in a workshop on embracing individual identity and how to bring ‘best practices’ into the classroom.
The school has many affinity groups actively meeting with parents
hosting dinners to discuss important topics related to diversity and
supporting speakers to broaden our perspective.
After a year of careful planning, we ended our fiscal year 2014-15
with the board bringing to fruition our vision of adding an additional 14,000sq ft. to complete our planned development project, which
began in 2006. This has been an extraordinary year for our community with the successful addition of the Middle School space,
coupled with a library, drama, art and music rooms, toddler play
area, retro fit of the small and large gyms, and a new roof top play
area. Additional tutoring spaces allows these programs to have
ample space to deliver the quality programming our parents
have come to expect. The response of the students has been one
of a mature reaction: “Debbie the space is so functional it enables
us to be more focused and productive. All the goals we set out for
the Middle School space have been accomplished and more!” We
are so very grateful to our Board of Directors, donors, volunteers,
faculty, and administrative teams for providing the support needed
to accomplish such a lofty goal.
Our enrollment ended in 2013-14 at 376 growing to 385 in 2014-15.
We are projected to grow to 396 in 2015-16. Our growth has been
measured and strategic. In 2015 we added one additional Lower Elementary (6-9) and Upper Elementary (9-12) classroom, each. In our
traditional manner, we build one grade at a time taking three years
to complete the developmental cycle. As we grow our programming,
we are also setting aside funds to support Montessori teacher training to ensure a pool of highly trained Montessori teachers for the
future. The school also places a high value on continued professional development for our faculty and administration. With funds
being supported by Title IIA (State Funding) and budget set-asides,
our teachers attend a variety of courses, seminars and conferences
to keep current with educational trends.
Development of global citizenship is built into our mission and
values from the time our children are two years old. Through peace
education, strategies and practices our students learn to develop
the tools for conflict resolution. We are proud to be one of six recipients (nationwide) of the Global Initiative for Foreign Languages
award. This honor was bestowed over the summer for our ongoing
relationship with the Costa Rican Language Academy which our
“Here is an essential principle of education: to teach details is to bring confusion; to
establish the relationship between things is to bring knowledge.”

Middle School students attend each year. In addition to the language component, our students partner with local middle school
programs, volunteer in an orphanage in San Jose and participate
in home-stays with local hosts. These experiences help students
learn, first hand, of others cultures and explore the world beyond
our borders. We thank Valerie Shull for her ongoing work in this
area and for growing our Spanish program to one that is looked
upon as a model within the country.
I want to thank the entire Board for their support and work on
behalf of the school community. I especially want to thank Board
members David Brown, Bill Stapel and Debbie Walters for their
tireless work on helping to bring the building project to completion,
with a special note of thanks to Anna May Trala for chairing our
successful Capital Campaign and Business Finance teams. To staff
members Kim Romain and Kathy Lunsky for their tireless work on
the building project and to all our volunteers I offer a huge thank
you. We couldn’t do what we do without your support.
To all our faculty, children, parents, grandparents, and friends you
make RPMS a unique environment for learning and have created
a culture that enables our community to thrive. In closing out this
year I want to especially want to thank outgoing Board President
Karen Salmon, for her tremendous leadership, unending support,
and her amazing ability to spearhead the facility expansion project.

Financial Year in Review
Rogers Park Montessori School ended its 2014-2015 fiscal year
(FY15, ending August 30) in a strong financial position. We can be
especially proud of this continued strength because it comes amidst
significant investment in the growth of our school and because it
is the result of outstanding community-wide effort. Leadership has
diligently managed the school’s business and finances. Trustees
have continued to work closely and productively with the administration. And our families have continued the long history of generosity at RPMS both with their time and their financial resources.
Early in FY15, the school raised about $18.5 million of debt that was
used to fund the building expansion and renovations as well as to
refinance the 2004 bonds used to construct the original Balmoral
building. The additional debt requires leadership to ensure that our
operating income can cover our obligations, and that we maintain
adequate cash on our balance sheet. We comfortably met these
goals in FY15 and our outlook for the coming years is bright.
We also made strides in FY15 toward our Raising Our Future Capital
Campaign goals, as commitments reached $2,228,899. Meanwhile,
our families, grandparents, alumni, and community partners joined
to contribute $138,800 to the Annual Fund, with 68% of our current
families, 70% of our faculty and staff, and 100% of the Board participating. As we continue to “grow into” our long-term school size and
limit tuition growth, we will continue to need these unrestricted gifts
to cover operating costs.
The Business Finance & Audit Committee will continue to support
our superb leadership, faculty, and staff in their work to provide a
world-class Montessori education to our children. Fundraising will
continue to be important to enabling this, but we now have a building that can match the quality and aspirations of our people.

Special Events
Each year, the Rogers Park Montessori School community gathers together for celebrations
in support of the mission and vision of a stellar Montessori education, and provides funds for
operating expenses and school programming. Without your gifts of remarkable energy, time,
talents and resources throughout the year, these opportunities would not have been possible.
