6 – INDIAN RIVER RESOURCE GUIDE/CHAMBER DIRECTORY 2016
Welcome to
INDIAN RIVER
When it comes to natural
highlights in the tip of Northern Lower
Michigan, you can either start at the
center and work your way out or start
at the edges and work your way to the
middle. Either way, you’ll be spending
time in Indian River, as it is at the heart
of the finest outdoor recreational
opportunities that Northern Michigan
has to offer.
Lakes and rivers for boating
and fishing, forests for camping,
hunting wildlife and mushrooms and
recreational trails for snowmobiling,
biking, hiking, cross country skiing
and ORV riding converge on
Indian River as if they were spokes
on a wheel of northern Michigan
outdoor recreation. You could
come to Indian River and go
fast-water kayaking, ORV riding
and sea kayaking all in the same
summer weekend. If you’d rather do
something more passive, substitute
reading a book by the lakeshore,
having lunch while watching boats
pass by on the river and sitting by
a campfire in the evening.
Geographically, Indian River is
approximately 30 miles south of
the Straits of Mackinac (Exit 310 on
I-75), midway between the eastern
and western shorelines on Lakes
Michigan and Huron. In the late
1800s and early 1900s people often
arrived by train and then took ferry
boats to motels and towns along the
rivers and lakes. These days most
people arrive by car, coming in on
I-75. But if planes are your thing,
Campbell Field is a small local airport
in Indian River while Pellston Airport
with commercial flights is also nearby.
Indian River is located between
Burt and Mullett Lakes, two of
Michigan’s largest inland lakes.
The two lakes are part of the Inland
Water Route, a 38-mile chain of
lakes and rivers that begins in
Conway and empties into Lake
Huron at Cheboygan. The lakes and
connecting rivers are enjoyed by
boaters in kayaks, sailboats and a
wide variety of powerboats.
The lakes are fed by the Sturgeon
and Pigeon Rivers so if river kayaking,
rafting, canoeing or tubing are more
your speed, that’s also available.
Being in the center of so many
lakes, streams and rivers also
makes Indian River a prime fishing
destination for both professional and
amateur fishermen. Professional
tournaments and TV shows are
drawing attention to Indian River
fishing, but the professionals don’t
enjoy their catch any more than the
five-year-old who catches his or her
first fish while fishing with grandpa.
In recent years local lake groups,
sportsmen, tribal groups and the
Department of Natural Resources
fisheries division have conducted
extensive cooperative studies and
planted thousands of small fish.
Those efforts are bearing fruit –
or in this case fish.
INDIAN RIVER RESOURCE GUIDE/CHAMBER DIRECTORY 2016 – 7
The Indian River Golf Club has a
beautiful 18-hole course and within
an hour’s drive there are dozens of
other 9 and 18-hole courses.
The Cross in the Woods is the
world’s largest crucifix. It is one of
Michigan’s top tourist destinations
and draws hundreds of thousands of
people to Indian River each year.
A pier to enhance fishing
opportunities was built on Burt Lake,
along the Indian River in 2014.
Indian River is also at the
middle of the North Central State
Recreational Trail, a 62-mile trail
from Gaylord to Mackinaw City.
The trail is the backbone of a broader
trail system with links throughout
northern Michigan. Indian River
serves as an excellent base for
biking and snowmobiling to a
different destination each day.
Indian River has one of the state’s
top snowmobile trail grooming
operations and access to hundreds
of miles of groomed trails.
The “V’s” – be they ORVs, ATVs
or UTVs – are growing in popularity
nationwide. Indian River is an ORV
friendly community. There are more
than 60 miles of existing trails and
area trail riding opportunities are
expanding.
Indian River is at the northern
edge of the Pigeon River Country
State Forest, home to the nation’s
largest wild elk herd east of the
Mississippi. The state forest also
has miles and miles of forestland for
camping, hunting, fishing, mushroom
and berry picking and hiking.
Burt Lake State Park offers
more than 200 campsites and a
park and beach area on the shore
of Burt Lake. There are also several
private campgrounds in the area.

Top O’Michigan Outboard Marathon
B OAT RAC E
The Top O’ Michigan Outboard
Marathon boat race started in 1949.
Over the past 67 years it’s become a
legend in boat racing circles and part
of the history and culture of the
people who live on the shorelines and
communities along the Inland
Water Route.
Old timers recall racing “back when
they ran the whole course in one day.”
Imagine that. Flying across 80 miles
of northern Michigan lakes and rivers,
your body taking a pounding while
kneeling in the cockpit of a boat less
than 15 feet long.
Current racers talk about getting
tossed around like a rag doll by waves
on Burt Lake or fighting the curves in
the Crooked River.
It’s not uncommon to hear spectators say things like, “When we started
coming up here to watch the race our
family camped at Burt Lake State
Park. Then we bought a cottage and
now we’re here most of the summer.”
Racers come from throughout the
United States as well as from Canada
and Ecuador to compete in the race.
Thousands of spectators line the
shorelines. Top O’ Michigan racers can
hit speeds of 50 to 70 miles per hour,
if conditions are good. If conditions
are rough and Mullett, Burt or Crooked
Lakes are being surly. It’s a slower
ride. In most years drivers experience
some of both conditions somewhere
on the course during the two days of
racing.
The Top O’ Michigan race takes
place on the second weekend in
August. The race starts at DeVoe
Beach in Indian River on both
Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday
racers race through the Indian River,
down the shoreline of Mullett Lake,
through the Cheboygan River to
Cheboygan and back. On Sunday
racers race to Conway, across
Burt Lake, down the shoreline to the
Crooked River, down to Conway then
back to Indian River and through the
Indian River, around a turn marker just
into Mullett Lake and then back to the
finish line at DeVoe Beach. Each day
of racing is about 40 miles.
The Top O’ Michigan race began
in 1949. In the heyday of outboard
racing it drew well over 100 boats
and was one of several open course
marathons. These days most
marathons are closed course races,
doing multiple laps. Top O’ Michigan
drivers scoff at that. Real race drivers
can turn both right and left on both
lakes in rivers in whatever kind of
conditions are thrown at them.
In recent years the number of entries
in the race has been pushing back up
toward the 100-boat mark.
While racers are highly competitive,
it’s a friendly competition. It’s common
to see racers and their crews helping
out other racers in the pits both before
and after the race. The race is also a
spectator friendly event. Spectators
are welcome to come into the pits and
meet the racers and see the boats.
When racers break down during the
race, it’s common for spectators to
help the drivers get back into the race
or contact their support crew.
The Top O’ Michigan Outboard
Club, a group of local drivers and race
supporters, sponsors and organizes
the race. The Department of Natural
Resources, Sheriff’s Department
Marine Patrol and owners of private
boats provide safety patrol boats to
keep the race safe as well as fun.

the national shrine of the
Cross in the Woods
A seating area in front of the
Cross allows outdoor worship
services and weddings during
the summer months. A beautiful
forested backdrop serves as a
background that changes colors
with the seasons.
The Cross in the Woods is the
centerpiece of a 14-acre campus
that includes a parish, gift shop,
family center, several other smaller
sculptures, a Stations of the Cross
Pathway and a Canticle Walk.
The Cross in the Woods is one of
Michigan’s most recognizable and
popular attractions. Each year more
than 200,000 people come to
Indian River to see the cross.
The 55-foot-high redwood cross
was erected in 1954. The seven-ton
bronze sculpture of Christ, created
by renowned Michigan sculptor
Marshall M Fredericks was added
in 1959.
One of the things the campus
lacked was any kind of bell. That was
addressed in 2014 when the pastoral council led an effort to purchase
an electronic bell system. The new
bell system can be used as a call to
mass, for weddings, funerals and to
play traditional hymns.
“There’s such an association
between bell sounds and holiness
and the church,” Fr. Mike Haney,
OFM, explained.
In the summer of 2015 a new
flight of stairs was added to the
base of the cross to improve traffic
flow and wooden timbers at the
base were replaced with a
decorative stone wall.
While the Cross in the Woods
is the central focus and largest
sculpture on the grounds, the
smaller sculptures of The
Resurrected Christ, Our Lady of the
Highway, St. Peregrine, The Holy
Family, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha,
and St. Francis of Assisi are also
amazing works of art.
Since the Cross and all the
statues are in an outdoor setting
and exposed to the northern
Michigan elements on a yeararound basis, every few years
special work crews and equipment
must be brought in to polish and
refinish them. That took place in
the late summer and early fall of
2015 and as Fr. Haney noted, the
statues “should glisten very nicely
for a long time.”
The Cross in the Woods is open
year-around and given northern
Michigan’s four seasons, the view
and the experience are somewhat
different at different times of the year.

parks & pavilions
In 2015 major renovations were completed at the
upper level of Marina Park and to both the park and pier
areas at DeVoe Beach.
The Marina Park project reconfigured and repaved
the public parking lot, enhanced the area surrounding
the parking lot and winterized the public restrooms.
There are also decorative sculptures and a foundation
for the totem pole, which is a popular photo attraction for
area visitors. The park renovation was funded with a
combination of state grants and local funding. The Indian
River Women’s Club funded construction of a pavilion
in conjunction with the project. The end result has been
to make the upper level of the park more attractive and
also allow it to serve as
a trailhead for the North
Central State Recreation
Trail that runs between
the upper and lower
levels of the park.
At DeVoe Beach a
sheet metal break wall
was replaced with a
concrete walkway and
pier called Veterans’ Pier.
The new pier is handicap
“If You’re Not Happy ...We’re NOT Finished!”
accessible, includes benches
for seating, enhances fishing
opportunities and also provides
a viewing area to watch the boats
and the sunset on Burt Lake.
On the shoreline, walkways
were improved, a memorial paver
block area was added along with
displays that include descriptions

under water sports
For multiple reasons, diving in
the Great Lakes has experienced
a dramatic growth in popularity in
recent years and people are coming
from all over the world to dive in the
Straits area.
“The Great Lakes have some of
the best shipwrecks in the world,”
Keith Knecht, a diving instructor at
Northern Michigan Dive Center, said.
There are numerous wrecks in
the Straits area, suitable for divers
with varying levels of experience.
There are 14 shipwrecks suitable
for sport diving in the Straits area
and another 10 or 12 wrecks that are
in shallower water and suitable for
snorkeling. There are also wrecks in
Hammond Bay that are down at 160
to 170 feet for technical divers.
Diving equipment has become
more user friendly and that’s broadened the activity’s appeal. “Now it’s
becoming a family thing,” Knecht
said. “I’ve had a lot of families come
in and get certified together.”
Northern Michigan Dive Center
is located in Cheboygan, on the river
near the bridge. In addition to providing diving gear, gases, lessons and
certification they have two boats, a
40-footer and a 27-footer, that they
use for shipwreck dive charters.
Experienced divers come from
all over the world to go on the
charter dives, but there are also
diving opportunities for people who
live in or are visiting the area and
want to learn about diving.
Although it’s possible to get
certified in a week, it’s more
common for people to spread the
certification out over a longer period.
“We’ll start a spring class in April
or May and have people ready to go
out to the open water by the time the
water gets warm,” Knecht said.
The Dive Center also offers a
“Discover Scuba Diving” program
for people who have never dived,
but would like to check it out. In that
program a person goes out with an
instructor, puts on gear in stand-up
depth water and after getting
comfortable goes out on a boat
with an instructor and does a
shallow-water dive.
“We’ve had people come back
from Discover Scuba, get off the
boat and say, ‘Sign me up for
lessons.’”
Due to zebra mussels water
clarity and visibility have improved
dramatically in the Great Lakes in
recent years. Knecht said it used
to be that 10 to 12 feet of visibility
was normal and if you had 15 feet of
visibility you were doing well. These
days 40 to 50 feet is the norm and
on a good day visibility is even better.
In addition to the Great Lakes,
northern lower Michigan also has
several inland lakes that are suitable
for diving. Knecht says Mullett Lake
is very popular, particularly around
Topinabee. People also dive in the
Cheboygan and Indian Rivers and in
Crooked and Burt Lakes. The water
is generally clear and in most places
the current is mild.
Divers have been finding interesting species of life in area lakes in
recent years. They’ve been seeing
freshwater sponges in Duncan Bay
and freshwater jellyfish in Burt Lake.
Diving lessons are taking place
just about every night during the
summer months and diving also
occasionally occurs during the
winter. Knecht says the Dive Center
normally puts together an ice dive
sometime during January or
February, depending on the ice.
That dive is usually a shallow dive
on the Jenny Lynn shipwreck in
about 18 feet of water.

fishing
Indian River and the surrounding
lakes, rivers and streams provide
some of the best and most
diverse fishing opportunities in
North America.
Everybody from grandpa and the
grand kids drowning worms off the
dock to professional tournament
fishermen flying around in bass
boats can fish in the Indian River
area. Pan fish no bigger than the
palm of your hand up to sturgeon
weighing more than 100 pounds
and a whole lot of other fish
somewhere in between are
swimming around in those lakes.
If you’re a local fisherman and
you catch a nice fish, you can get
your picture on the wall in the
fishing contest down at Pat &
Gary’s Party Store in Indian River.
If you’re a professional fisherman
and part of a TV show filming a
contest, you could end up winning
$50,000.
Good fishing and the fishermen
and fishing camps they attracted
are part of the area’s roots. More
than 100 years later fishing remains
a critical recreational, economic and
cultural part of the area. That’s not
an accident. Fishing remains strong
because people take care of it.
A lot of time, money and
cooperative effort go into taking
care of and promoting area fishing.
One example of those efforts is
the Northern Inland Lakes Citizens
Fishery Advisory Committee. The
group was formed in 2009 and
includes representatives from the
Department of Natural Resources,
tribal groups, sport fishing, lake and
environmental groups. The
committee meets twice a year at
the Tuscarora Township Hall in
Indian River. The discussion
includes updates on fishing
success or lack of success in
various lakes, information on the
latest research, reports on threats
from invasive plants and animals,
and planning for programs and
projects to learn more and
continue to care for the lakes and
enhance fishing opportunities. It’s a
cooperative effort that puts a variety
of information and resources in one
place and allows things to get done.
The Sturgeon For Tomorrow,
Black Lake Chapter is another
example of citizens, researchers
and law enforcement joining in a
cooperative effort to take care of
a fishery. That effort includes a
spring sturgeon guarding program,
in which citizen volunteers stand
watch over the sturgeon in the
spring to protect them from
poaching while they’re spawning in
the rivers. The program has grown
to include a hatchery on the Black
River and sturgeon research that
has drawn worldwide attention.
(More information on the
Sturgeon For Tomorrow program
can be found on line at

The quality of fishing available
on area lakes attracts not only
recreational fishermen, but also
tournament fishermen and TV
shows. In addition to smaller local
walleye tournaments, groups such
as Michigan Bass Nation, the
National Bass Anglers, B.A.S.S.
Nation Team Championship Series
and the Bass Federation of
Michigan have come to Indian
River in recent years for
tournaments. TV shows
including Fishing University,
Reel in the Outdoors and the
Ultimate Match Fishing

in Indian River. The Indian River
Tourist Bureau and the Chamber
of Commerce have helped
coordinate the tournaments
and TV shows.

Sturgeon are a prehistoric fish that grow to six-feet long and weigh
more than 100 pounds. They are found throughout the Inland
Waterway, but the largest numbers are in Black Lake and the Black
River. In early May while sturgeon are spawning in the river, volunteers guard the sturgeon to protect them from poachers. At times,
sturgeon can be seen spawning beneath the Indian River Bridge.

enjoy northern michigan wines
and seasonal activities at winery
Northern Michigan is becoming
known for wine making and wine
tasting and a group of northern
Michigan wineries have formed an
organization called the Northwest
Michigan Bay View Wine Trail.
There are nine wineries in the
group, including Seasons of the
North, located on M-68, just west
of Indian River. The other eight
wineries are: Crooked Vine
Vineyard and Winery of Alanson;
Harbor Springs Winery of Harbor
Springs; Pleasantview Winery of
Harbor Springs; Cellars of Royal
Farms of Atwood; Maple Moon
Sugarbush and Winery of
Petoskey; Walloon Lake Winery
of Petoskey; Petoskey Farms
Vineyard and Winery of Petoskey;
and Mackinaw Trail Winery of
Petoskey.
The organization’s goal is to bring
people to wineries in Northern
Michigan and have them taste the
wide variety of wines being
made here.
Making wine north of the
45th parallel is different due to the
different growing season. However,
by using hybrid grapes, northern
Michigan wineries are adjusting to
the shorter growing season and
getting excellent results. Wineries
in the Northern Michigan Bay View
Wine Trail group have won awards
in wine competitions.
Most of the wineries have
opened in the past few years.
Seasons of the North opened in
June of 2013. Its location on M-68
between Indian River and Alanson
has proven easy for people to find.
People are stopping in to taste the
Northern Michigan wines and they
like what they’re finding.
The wineries on the trail are open
year around. A local cab company
has a bus that does special tours,
taking people to each of the
wineries on the trail.
Seasons of the North is open
year around. This past summer
they hosted several special evening
events including a bon-fire and
a car show. In the winter, they’ve
hosted an ice sculpture contest in
conjunction with the Indian River
WinterFest.

ORV the river, through the woods
(See ads for these businesses
elsewhere in this publication.)
As for where to ride, Indian River
is at the center of a large and growing
trail system. Cheboygan County
political bodies and businesses took
a position years ago to be an ORV
friendly community. ORVs are allowed
to ride alongside county roads and
that plays an important part in allowing
riders to get from one trail to another.
One of the things that concerns
some new riders is the possibility
of getting lost or breaking down on
a trail. There again, Indian River and
Cheboygan County’s history and
expertise in outdoor recreation,
have that problem covered.
In recent years ORV riding has
exploded in popularity and
continues to grow. As a long-time
center of northern lower Michigan
outdoor recreation, Indian River has
proven to be an ideal location for
ORV riding.
One of the primary reasons for the
burst in popularity of ORV riding is
the development of the side-by-side
machines. They’re more comfortable
than the traditional one-up machines
and have made ORV riding more
popular with people of all ages and
turned it into more of a family activity.
For people interested in getting
into ORV riding, the obvious
questions are: Where do I buy the
ORVs and related equipment?
Where can I ride them? When I go
riding, will I be able to avoid getting
lost and be safe on the trails?
When side-by-sides began
becoming popular, Indian River
already had businesses with a long
history of selling and servicing boats,
snowmobiles, both road and offroad motorcycles and one-up ATVs.
Moving into the side-by-sides was a
logical and smooth transition. It’s not
uncommon for people to rent ORVs
and then if they decide they like the
activity, later buy their own machines.
Larger trails are well-marked, not
only with signs and trail markers, but
also with numbers corresponding to
GPS locations. A cell phone call to
rescuers with one of the numbers
off a trail marker will allow dispatchers to pinpoint your location.
Cheboygan County also has an
amazing search and rescue unit. It’s
under the direction of the Cheboygan
County Sheriff’s Department, but
includes personnel from fire
departments throughout the county.
It’s pretty much impossible to get lost
in a place that no one on the rescue
unit is familiar with. The search and
rescue unit has access to tracking
dogs, radio tracking devices, aerial
maps and if need be helicopters. It’s
a combination of human knowledge,
equipment and high technology. If
that unit is activated, you’re going
to be found. Local fire departments
also have whatever vehicles they
need to get to you and bring you out.
However, with that said, even
better than being found is not
getting lost in the first place.
Trail maps are available and local
motel owners will not only explain to
riders how to access the trails,
but in some instances also offer
guided rides.
An annual guided Fall Color Ride
in early October draws more than
200 riders from Michigan and
several other states. The ride, which
celebrated its fifth year in 2015, is
coordinated by local businesses
Fishweb, Brentwood Lodging and
the Stargate Motel.
Duane Shank, one of the ride’s
organizers, says they’ve had as
many as 300 machines on the ride,
but now try to keep it down to 250.
The main ride takes place on
Saturday with smaller rides on
Friday and Sunday. Saturday’s ride
is divided into two groups: one group
takes a trip of about 140 miles while
the other ride is a more casual
90-mile trip.
The Fall Color Ride usually takes
place somewhere around Oct. 10,
which is typically close to the peak
of fall colors in northern lower
Michigan.
Shank said the ORV ride gives
people a chance to see the northern
Michigan woods and wilderness.
“That’s what they want, sights and
scenery. We take for granted our
scenery up here.”

Looking for the perfect daytrip?
Visit a lighthouse!
When lighthouses along the
shorelines of northern Michigan were
built in the 1800s their purpose was
to help ships find their way through
the Great Lakes. Now, more than a
century later, lighthouses are causing
people, thousands and thousands of
them, to find their way to the Great
Lakes, particularly to the Straits area.
“Lighthouses are an interesting
thing. Because there is a finite
number of them, they somehow
appeal to the collector mentality in
people,” Terry Pepper of the
Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers
Association (GLLKA) says.
Lighthouses are a major tourist
attraction and several lighthouses
are located in or near communities
around the Straits of Mackinac.
Cheboygan has two lighthouses on
the shore of the Cheboygan River
and two more out in Lake Huron
that are visible from the shore.
The Cheboygan Crib lighthouse is
near the mouth of the Cheboygan
River. It’s a traditional looking lighthouse tower that when constructed
in the 1880s rested on a wooden
crib out in the lake. The lighthouse
keeper used to have to row out to it.
A century later when the crib started
to deteriorate, the lighthouse was
brought up on shore to its present
location.
The Cheboygan River Front Range
Lighthouse is slightly farther up the
Cheboygan River. Combined with
the rear range light, which is just a
light on a skeletal tower the lights
create a two-light system that ships
can use to line up on to come into
the river. The lights went into service
in 1880 and played a critical role in
lumbering era shipping.
The two lighthouses that are out
in Lake Huron off of Cheboygan are
the Fourteen Foot Shoal lighthouse
and the Poe Reef light station.
Moving to the north, Mackinaw City
has two lighthouses. Old Mackinac
Point is in downtown Mackinaw City,
just east of the Mackinac Bridge.
It was established in 1890 and
looks like a castle.

The McGulpin Point lighthouse is
on the Lake Michigan shoreline just
outside of Mackinaw City. It’s easy
to find. Just take Central Street west
until it comes to a T, then turn right.
McGulpin point also has a
distinctive stone architecture.
Farther down the Lake Huron
shoreline, the Forty Mile Point
Lighthouse is part of the Lighthouse
Park, located seven miles north of
Rogers City on US 23.
Forty-Mile Point, the Cheboygan
River Front Range, Old Mackinac
Point and McGulpin Point
lighthouses are all open to the
public during the summer months.
People can and do come to the
lighthouses and climb up into them.
“We have people sign in at a
registry and that’s right around
8,500 to 9,000 people per year,”
Barb Stone, a board member of the
40-Mile Point Society, says.

from page 34
The 40-Mile Point Society is a
nonprofit group that takes care of
the lighthouse and maintains it. The
40-Mile Point Society has existed
since 1996. Stone said it was started
by business people in Rogers City,
with Emil Plath, the late owner of
Plath Meats, serving as a driving
force to start the society.
Stone said she ended up as one
of the original members of the
Society after attending a meeting.
Her husband’s father was an
Englishman, and he used to go out
and visit the lighthouse keeper who
was also from England.
Stone said that family connection
led to attending the meeting and
from there the lighthouse just drew
her in. “I’ve learned a lot,” she says.
Pepper, who is a wealth of
information on lighthouses, got
involved with lighthouses back
around 1989. He says he’d just
gotten into photography and was
headed north from Indiana to go
fishing at a lake near Traverse City.
His wife suggested he take a detour
and take pictures of a lighthouse.
He enjoyed that and during the
remainder of the vacation Pepper
and his wife ended up finding 10
lighthouses. In the years since then
Pepper has seen all 255 Great
Lakes lighthouses on the U.S. side
and about 85 percent of the 129
Great Lakes lighthouses on the
Canadian side.
When Pepper first became
interested in lighthouses there wasn’t
a lot of information readily available.
The internet was becoming popular
and Pepper began looking up
information and sharing it.
His web site at www.gllka.com is
now an amazing collection of
information for anyone interested
in Great Lakes lighthouses.
Sheplers Ferry out of Mackinaw
City offers cruises that take people
to see lighthouses in the Straits
area. There are 18 lighthouses in the
Straits area between Beaver Island
in Lake Michigan and Bois Blanc
Island in Lake Huron.
Sheplers offers both westbound
and eastbound lighthouse cruises
throughout the summer with
Pepper serving as narrator.
Lighthouses are something that
some people are very passionate
about.

“With some people it’s all they do
when they’re on vacation,” Pepper
said. “They’ll tell you specifically how
many lighthouses they’ve seen and
how many more they have to see.”
There’s an organization called the
U.S. Lighthouse Society that issues
blank passport booklets. When
people visit a lighthouse they have
their booklet stamped. When the
booklet is filled, they send it in and
the organization sends them a patch
that they can wear.
Sherry Nelson from Indian River
says that one of the things she likes
about Michigan and northern
Michigan in particular is lighthouses.
“I just love lighthouses. I think
they’re so cool. I swing by the
lighthouses all the time,” she said.
“They’re just such fun to go visit.
It’s like a history lesson every time.”

snowmobilers
enjoy miles of
groomed local trails
Indian River is one of northern
Michigan’s top snowmobiling
destinations. The area has an
excellent and growing trail system
and in a typical winter will receive
approximately 100 inches of snow.
The Indian River Snowmobile
Grooming Club grooms
approximately 60 miles of local
trails in the Indian River area.
These trails link into other trail
systems running throughout
northern lower Michigan. The
Indian River Grooming Club will
groom trails as often as six nights
a week when conditions allow.
Over the years, the club has been a
leader in implementing new
technology and equipment to
make the grooming program
more efficient and the trails better.
In 2014 the Grooming Club built a
new building near the trailhead to
house their equipment.
The Grooming Club also installs
and maintains signage along the
trail system.
Indian River has several lodging
facilities and restaurants within a
short distance of the trail. There
are also businesses that rent, sell
and service snowmobiles.
Safety is emphasized. Local law
enforcement departments patrol
area trails and also offer
snowmobile safety classes for
young snowmobilers.

cooperation park
Cooperation Park is a multifaceted community recreation
facility that encompasses
approximately 60 acres of land
at the south end of Indian River.
The park is under the direction
of the Tuscarora Township Parks
Commission and includes softball
fields, soccer fields, basketball
and tennis courts, a skating rink,
sliding hill, barbecue grills,
skateboard park, horse shoe pits,
children’s play area, hiking and
cross country ski trails along with
restrooms and a picnic pavilion.
On summer evenings crowds
gather to watch children as young
as five years old up into their
teenage years play Little League
softball and baseball. Meanwhile,
other people play on the basketball
and tennis courts. Parents with
young children enjoy a fenced
in area that has playground
equipment for the children
surrounded by a walking path for
moms and dads. The skateboard
park draws a younger crowd while
the horseshoe pits tend to draw
an older crowd.
In early fall the soccer fields are
busy with several teams in various
age groups. The park also serves
as the course for high school
cross country meets.
During the winter, there’s no
reason for Indian River people to
let the cold weather chase them
indoors. Cooperation Park has a
beautiful well-maintained skating
rink. The rink is large enough to
accommodate hockey players at
one end and figure skaters at the
other. If people get cold at the
skating rink, there’s a large and
modern warming house.
The sliding hill is also a popular
winter attraction at Cooperation
Park. There are benches and grills
near the bottom of the hill for
parents and others who would
rather eat hot dogs than go
whooshing down a hill.
Cooperation Park also hosts
special events. On Easter weekend
hundreds of children come to the
park for an Easter Egg Hunt.
The Indian River Women’s Club
constructed a covered pavilion,
which is a popular location for
summer meetings, picnics and
class reunions.
Cooperation Park was founded in
the early 1960s with the donation
of a 10-acre parcel of land. Since
that time, various organizations
and individuals have donated time
and money to add activities and
facilities.
One of the driving forces
behind the park for decades was
the late Donna Bess McClutchey.
A long-time member of the Parks
Commission, Donna Bess worked
tirelessly to see the park grow
into a place where kids could run
and play. A plaque near the tennis
courts honors Donna Bess for her
work on the park.
