Welcome to Indian River
Indian River is in the center of beautiful things in northern Michigan: lakes,
rivers, forests, trails, things that provide
a wide variety of outdoor recreational
opportunities. This booklet is your invitation to come and enjoy these things.
Depending on where you are, come on
up, down or over and find yourself in
the middle of a relaxing and enjoyable
experience.
The 2014 Indian River Resource
Guide and Chamber Directory is a
joint project of the Indian River Chamber of Commerce and Straitsland Publishing llc. The Resource Guide is an annual publication offering both residents
and visitors information about the people, resources, activities and businesses
that make Indian River one of northern
Michigan’s most desirable places to live
or vacation.
Geographically, Indian River is approximately 30 miles south of the Straits
of Mackinac (Exit 310 on I-75), midway
between the eastern and western shorelines of Lakes Michigan and Huron.
From a recreational perspective, if
northern Michigan was viewed as a sun
or a wheel, the rays and spokes would
meet at Indian River. Most people arrive
by car, coming in on I-75. But if planes
are your thing, Campbell Field is a
small local airport in Indian River while
Pellston Airport with commercial
flights is also nearby.
Indian River is located between Burt
and Mullett Lakes, two of Michigan’s
largest inland lakes. The two lakes are
part of the Inland Water Route, a 38-mile
chain of lakes and rivers that begins in
Conway and empties into Lake Huron.
The lakes and connecting rivers are
enjoyed by boaters in kayaks, sailboats
and a wide variety of powerboats.
The lakes are fed by the Sturgeon
and Pigeon Rivers so if river kayaking,
rafting, canoeing or tubing are more
your speed, that’s also available.
Being in the center of so many lakes,
streams and rivers also makes Indian
River a prime fishing destination for
both professional and amateur fishermen. Professional tournaments and
TV shows are drawing attention to Indian River fishing, but the professionals
don’t enjoy their catch any more than
the five-year-old who catches his or her
first fish while fishing with grandpa. In
recent years local lake groups, sportsmen, tribal groups and the Department
of Natural Resources fisheries division
have conducted extensive cooperative
studies and planted thousands of small
fish and those efforts are bearing fruit –
or in this case fish.
Indian River is also at the middle of
the North Central State Recreational
Trail, a 62-mile trail from Gaylord to
Mackinaw City. The trail is the backbone of a broader trail system with links
throughout northern Michigan. Indian
River serves as an excellent base point
for biking and snowmobiling to a different destination each day.
Indian River has one of the state’s
top snowmobile trail grooming operations and access to hundreds of miles of
groomed trails.
The “V’s” be they ORVs, ATVs or UTVs
are growing in popularity nationwide.
Indian River is an ORV friendly community. There are more than 60 miles of ex-
isting trails and area trail riding opportunities are expanding.
The Indian River Golf Club has a
beautiful 18-hole course and within an
hour’s drive there are dozens of other 9
and 18-hole courses.
The Cross in the Woods is the
world’s largest crucifix. It is one of Michigan’s top tourist destinations and draws
hundreds of thousands of people to Indian River each year.
Indian River is at the northern edge
of the Pigeon River Country State Forest, home to the nation’s largest wild elk
herd east of the Mississippi. The state
forest also has miles and miles of forestland for hunting, fishing, mushroom
and berry picking and hiking.
The Indian River Chamber of Commerce is a ready source of information
for visitors. The Chamber’s phone number is 231-238-9325 or 1-800-EXIT310.
The Chamber’s web site is www.irchamber.com. A complete list of Chamber
member businesses is included in this
booklet.
Straitsland Publishing llc publishes both the Indian River Resource
Guide and the Straitsland Resorter, a
weekly newspaper serving Indian River
and the areas surrounding Burt and
Mullett Lakes. For additional information about the area, pick up a copy of
the Straitsland Resorter at stores and
news stands throughout the region.
You may contact Straitsland Publishing llc at 231-238-7362 or by e-mail at

Hit the trail!
Northern Lower Michigan is known
for beautiful forests, lakes and streams
and people are discovering that recreational trails are one of the best ways to
enjoy those things.
Whether your chosen mode of trail
utilization be hiking, biking, snowmobiling, boating, cross country skiing,
ORVing, canoeing, kayaking or horseback riding, there are trails in or near
Indian River to accommodate the activity. Located just off I-75, near the middle
of the state, middle of the 62-mile-long
North Central State Trail and at the
center of the Inland Water Route, Indian River is a natural hub for a growing
collection of outdoor related trail and
waterway activities.
“The use appears to be greater and
greater,” Emily Meyerson, Trailways Coordinator, said. “The North Central gets
a lot of use, especially in the Indian River
area. It’s exciting.”
The North Central Trail starts in
Gaylord and ends in Mackinaw City. It
has a crushed limestone surface that
makes it ideal for bicyclists and hikers.
It is built on a former railroad grade so
there aren’t any steep slopes. It passes
through beautiful forested areas and
alongside both rivers and lakes. Seeing
wildlife is common while on the trail. It
also passes through several small communities that provide food and rest-
rooms.
Indian River is in the process of building a trailhead area for the North Central Trail in Marina Park. That project
will be constructed this summer and
will improve the parking and restroom
facilities and also provide a better link to
Indian River’s downtown area.
At Cheboygan, the North Central Trail
links to a trail that people can take to Alpena, down the east side of the state. If
people would rather go down the west
side of the state, they can take the North
Central Trail to Mackinaw City and pick
up a trail that comes back down to Alanson. Another trail runs from Harbor
Springs into Petoskey and on to Charlevoix.
Meyerson said that last year she met
two people who had walked from Charlevoix to Mackinaw City and from there
were going to walk the North Central
Trail down through Indian River toward
Gaylord.
“I think you’ll see more and more
people doing multi-day trips because
there are more and more trails,” Meyerson said.
Snowmobiles utilize the North Central Trail in the winter. It’s one of the
most popular trails in Northern Michigan. The North Central and other area
trails are groomed several times each
week by the Indian River Snowmobile
Trail Grooming Club. Consequently,
trails in the Indian River area are among
the best groomed in the state.
An effort called the Blue Water Trail
Initiative has been launched (no pun
intended) to allow people to make better use of the Inland Water Route as a
recreational water trail. The 38-mile water route begins with the Crooked Lake
in Conway and ends at Lake Huron in
Cheboygan. In between there are the
Crooked, Indian and Cheboygan Rivers,
along with Burt and Mullett Lakes. For
small power boats, canoes or kayaks, it’s
a beautiful trip. Organizations working
on the Blue Water Trail Initiative are developing materials that will identify existing launch sites, campgrounds, motels, restaurants and other support areas
and also working on adding resources.
For example, one of the things being
looked at is adding a kayak and canoe
rack at Marina Park. Paddlers would be
able to lock their canoes or kayaks up at
the rack and then walk across the street
to shop and eat.
The diversity of trail related opportunities in Indian River allows people to
do more than one thing each day. You
could go flat-water paddling one day,
biking the next day and fast-water paddling the next day. Or if you’re feeling
really ambitious you could do all three
in the same day.

OFF ROAD with
ATV/UTVs
Off road ATV and UTV riding are
among the fastest growing forms of outdoor recreation in America and Indian
River is among the places in Michigan
where it’s growing by leaps and bounds.
Indian River has all of the ingredients
to make off road riding successful. There
are hundreds of miles of trails. The community of Indian River and Cheboygan
County have both adopted policies that
are off road friendly. There’s an active
and growing local off road club that is
working with the Department of Natural Resources and County Road Commission to improve and expand riding
opportunities. There are businesses that
provide sales, rental and service of machines. There are places to stay that not
only will explain where the trails are, but
lead off road excursions.
The Mud Brothers ATV Club was
formed two years by a small group of off
road riders. In two years they’ve grown
to 160 members.
“Right now we’re the fastest growing
club in northern Michigan,” Club President Mike Maves said.
The club is family oriented, with
youngsters they call “mud pups” all the
way up to riders in their 70s. During the
summer the Mud Brothers have a club
ride every month and they also do three
larger events, sometimes coordinating
those with other northern Michigan
clubs. During the 2013 Indian River
SummerFest, the Mud Brothers led a
charity ride that raised $3,500 for the
Wounded Warriors program.
Maves said that from Indian River
you can ride over to the Black Mountain trail system or to other northern
Michigan communities. He said that Indian River, Atlanta and Lewiston are ATV
friendly communities and you can ride
back and forth between them.
Duane Shank of Brentwood Lodging has been involved in organizing
and leading guided rides that draw riders from all over Michigan and several
other states.
“We do a spring ride in April and a fall
color tour in October,” Shank said. “Then
during the summer we’ll do monthly
rides. They’re all guided.”
Shank says the combination of lots of
trails and someone to show them where
the trails are is important to new riders.
“The new people in this sport, they
find out they can come up here and ride
60, 80, 120 miles a day and that excites
them. They come up here and ride with
us because they don’t have to worry
about getting lost.”
On the larger rides, people are divided into separate groups that allow them
to ride at whatever speed and distance
they feel is comfortable.
DNR Recreation Specialist Paige Perry
says the Indian River area has a great
opportunity for ORV riding. The Tomahawk Trail system between Indian River
and Wolverine has 132 miles of designated trails. There are various types of
trails: narrow, challenging trails for off
road motorcycles; wider 50-inch trails
for the traditional ATVs; and trails that
are 72 inches or wider for the ORV/UTVs.
With the wider UTVs growing in popularity, the DNR is trying to adapt trails
accordingly.
“It’s kind of a new thing that we’re trying to accommodate,” Perry said. “There
are a lot of people just looking to ride
around in the woods. We’re trying to
provide for those things.”
Statewide, Michigan has more than
4,000 miles of designated off road trails.
Maps can be found on the DNR web site
at www.michigan.gov/mdnr.

A stop
on new
wine
tasting trail
Northern Michigan is becoming
known for wine making and wine tasting and a group of northern Michigan
wineries have formed an organization
called the Northern Michigan Bay
View Wine Trail.
There are six wineries in the group, including Seasons of the North, located
on M-68, just west of Indian River. The
other five wineries are: Crooked Vine
Vineyard and Winery of Alanson; Harbor Springs Winery of Harbor Springs;
Pleasant View Winery of Harbor Springs;
Cellars of Royal Farms of Atwood; and
Mackinaw Trail Winery of Petoskey.
Syd VanValkenburgh of Seasons of
the North is the organization’s President. He said the organization’s goal is
to bring people to wineries in Northern
Michigan and have them taste the wide
variety of wines being made here.
VanValkenburgh explained that wine
making north of the 45th parallel is different due to the different growing season. However, by using hybrid grapes,
northern Michigan wineries are adjusting to the shorter growing season and
getting excellent results. All six of the
wineries in the Northern Michigan Bay
View Wine Trail group have won awards
in wine competitions.
“We’ve all won awards with our wines
already,” VanValkenburgh said. “We’re a
growing area of quality wines.”
Most of the wineries have opened in
the past few years. Seasons of the North
opened in June of 2013. VanValkenburgh
says the first summer went great. He said
the location on M-68 between Indian
River and Alanson has proven easy for
people to find. People are stopping in to
taste the Northern Michigan wines and
they like what they’re finding.
“We get people who buy cases to take
down to their friends in Florida,” VanValkenburgh said.
The wineries on the trail are open year
around. A local cab company has a bus
that does special tours, taking people to
each of the wineries on the trail.
Seasons of the North is open year
around. Their summer hours are 11 a.m.
to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and
from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Top O’Michigan
Outdoor Marathon Race
For more than 60 years racers have
been putting outboard motors on small
boats and firing up those motors to go
screaming across the lakes and through
the rivers in the Top O’ Michigan
Outboard
Marathon
National
Championship boat race.
The race is not only one of northern
Michigan’s longest running sporting
traditions, it has reached legendary
status in the boat racing world. It’s
billed as the world’s toughest outboard
marathon. The twists and turns of the
rivers and the pounding waves of Burt
and Mullett Lakes test the limits of
both man and machine. People travel
thousands of miles to participate in the
race and thousands of spectators line
the course.
While most current outboard
marathons just run multiple circles on
a closed course, the Top O’ Michigan
Outboard Marathon isn’t about driving
in circles. Real racers can turn right as
well as left. Top O’ Michigan racers man
up (or in some cases woman up) and hit
speeds of 50 to 70 miles per hour when
conditions are nice and hang on tight
while being tossed around like rag dolls
when Burt, Mullett or Crooked Lakes
have an attitude.
The race starts and ends at DeVoe
Beach in Indian River on both days. On
Saturday racers go through the Indian
River and up Mullett Lake, into the
Cheboygan River and to the Cheboygan
bridge and back. It’s about a 40-mile
trip. If both man and machine are still
functioning, on Sunday racers go across
Burt Lake, then up the shoreline to the
Crooked River, through the Crooked
River, into Crooked Lake and down to
Conway. After coming back to Indian
River, racers go through the Indian
River out to Mullett Lake and then back
through the Indian River to the finish
line at DeVoe Beach. That route is also
about 40 miles.
The Top O’ Michigan boat race started
in 1949. Back in the hay day of boat
racing the race drew well over 100 boats
and they did the entire inland waterway
course in a single day. In recent years
entries have been pushing back up
toward that 100 boat mark.
Due primarily to the weather and
shifting winds, each year and each day
the race provides a different challenge
for drivers. Some years Mullett Lake
pounds drivers all the way from
Topinabee to Dodge Point. Other
years, it’s from Dodge Point to the
entrance to the Cheboygan River. Burt
Lake can be a comfortable ride across,
but then have an attitude on the way
back. The Crooked River wasn’t named
sarcastically. It has turns that challenge
the best drivers.
The race is known and respected
throughout the U.S. and racers come
from all across the country to participate.
It’s also not uncommon to have racers
from other countries competing. One
of the few similar outboard marathon
races in the world is in Ecuador and in
recent years racers from Ecuador have
been coming to the Indian River race
and racers from the U.S. have gone to the
Ecuador race. Where the U.S. and China
had ping pong diplomacy, the U.S. and
Ecuador have boat race diplomacy.
The race is organized by the Top O’
Michigan Outboard Racing Club. The
Department of Natural Resources,
Sheriff’s Department Marine Patrol and
local owners of private boats provide
safety patrol boats.
Spectators not only line the shorelines
of the rivers, but also can come into
the pit area and see the drivers and
boats. When boats break down, it’s not

Cooperation park
Cooperation Park is a family recreation facility and families, particularly
those with children, spend countless
hours there.
Cooperation Park is located off of
Straits Highway at the south end of Indian River. It encompasses more than
60 acres of land and offers recreation for
people of all ages at all times of the year.
The park is under the direction of the
Tuscarora Township Parks Commission
and includes: six softball and baseball
fields, three tennis courts, multiple soccer fields of varying sizes, a skateboard
park, children’s play land, basketball
courts, horseshoe pits, hiking and cross
country ski trails, a skating rink with a
warming house, a lighted sledding hill
with a barbecue grill, and a covered pavilion for picnics.
On summer evenings crowds gather
to watch children as young as five years
old up into their teenage years play Little League softball and baseball. Meanwhile, other people play on the bas-
ketball and tennis courts. Parents with
young children enjoy a fenced in area
that has playground equipment for the
children surrounded by a walking path
for moms and dads. The skateboard
park draws a younger crowd while the
horseshoe pits tend to draw an older
crowd.
In early fall the soccer fields are
busy with several teams in various age
groups.
During the winter, there’s no reason
for Indian River people to let the cold
weather chase them indoors. Cooperation Park has a beautiful well-maintained skating rink. The rink is large
enough to accommodate hockey players at one end and figure skaters at the
other. If people get cold at the skating
rink, there’s a large and modern warming house.
The sliding hill is also a popular winter attraction at Cooperation Park. There
are benches and grills near the bottom of the hill for parents and others

Cooperation Park also hosts special
events. On Easter weekend hundreds
of children come to the park for an Easter Egg Hunt. The Indian River Women’s
Club constructed a covered pavilion,
which is a popular location for summer
meetings, picnics and class reunions.
Cooperation Park was founded in the
early 1960s with the donation of a 10acre parcel of land. Since that time, various organizations and individuals have
donated time and money to add activities and facilities.
One of the driving forces behind the
park for decades was the late Donna
Bess McClutchey. A long-time member
of the Parks Commission, Donna Bess
worked tirelessly to see the park grow
into a place where kids could run and
play. A plaque near the tennis courts
honors Donna Bess for her work on the
park.

SUMMERFEST 2014
In the middle of summer Indian River
throws a week-long party known as the
Indian River Summerfest. The 34th
Annual SummerFest will take place July
14-20.
The event kicks off on Monday evening (July 14) with an art expo at the
entertainment tent in Marina Park. The
event also includes wine tasting, craft
beers and light food.
On Tuesday evening a bike parade
along the recreation trail from East
M-68 to Marina Park is followed by an
Ice Cream Social and a Duck Race.
There are also activities for children
and a firemen’s waterfight. The bike
parade/ice cream social/duck race evening began in 2010 and has quickly become one of the nicest family events of
the summer.
The duck race involves little rubber
ducks racing down the Little Sturgeon
River. People pay to buy a ticket for one
of the ducks and then eat ice cream and
watch the ducks race. If their duck is the
first across the line, they win a prize. The
evening concludes with a Teen Dance.
On Wednesday, July 16 the Friends
of Inland Lakes Schools will host their
annual Lobster and Pig Roast Dinner.
Each year the dinner raises thousands of
dollars that are used to supplement the
educational program at Inland Lakes
schools. This past year FOILS donated
$18,000 to the Inland Lakes High School
Science Department. FOILS has also
helped with the school’s First Robotics
team. In 2013, FOILS also raised $2,500,
which was placed in an endowment
fund for future contributions.
Thursday, July 17 there will be a Family Night Beach Bash at DeVoe Beach
from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event includes
a sandcastle building contest and a
wide variety of games, activities and entertainment for children. There will also
be a Battle of the Bands at the Entertainment Tent.
Events on Friday, July 18 include the
first day of a Craft Show and a Children’s
Activity Area downtown along with a
Cruise Night and entertainment at the
Entertainment Tent in the evening.
Saturday, July 19 will open with the
Indian River Kiwanis Club’s 5k/10k
fun run. Later in the day there will be:
a Chili Cookoff and Custom Car Show
downtown; a Co-ed Beach Volleyball
Tournament at DeVoe Beach; Craft
Show and Farm Market downtown;
and entertainment in the Entertainment Tent in the evening.
On Sunday, July 20 there will be
a Kayak/Bicycle Biathlon at DeVoe
Beach.
People interested in helping out on
the SummerFest organizational committee may contact the Chamber of
Commerce at 231-238-9325.

The National Shrine of
The Cross In The Woods
For more than 50 years The Cross in the Woods has been
one of the most popular attractions in Michigan. Each year between 200,000 and 300,000 people come to see the 55-foothigh redwood cross and the seven-ton bronze body of Christ.
Fr. Charles D. Brophy and architect Alden Dow discussed
the idea for a large cross and a life-sized figure of Christ in the
early 1950s. Their initial thought was to have the cross on the
front lawn of the church on M-68. But after further consideration, they decided they didn’t want people to just look at the
cross while driving past. They wanted people to stop, look and
experience.
Land was secured behind the church and the idea blossomed into the redwood cross and the bronze sculpture by
Marshall Fredericks.
The cross has a beautiful northern Michigan forest background. In front of the cross there is a seating area for outdoor
worship services in the summer, weather permitting. There
is also an outdoor meditation and prayer walk area on the
grounds and a gift shop.
In the mid 1990s the parish constructed a new church with
a glass wall that provides a beautiful view of the cross during
services.
The National Shrine of The Cross in the Woods is located
just off of West M-68 near the intersection of Straits Highway.

WATER, LAND, AIR
GET ON THE WATER!
For a variety of inland boating opportunities, you’ll be hard pressed to find
anyplace that offers more than Indian
River.
Power boating, sailing, and multiple
varieties of paddling on fast rivers, slow
rivers, large lakes and small lakes are
easily accessible.
Burt and Mullett Lakes are two of
Michigan’s largest and most beautiful
inland lakes. The two lakes offer plenty
of space for fishing, water skiing or just
a quiet afternoon soaking up rays on
a boat ride. If you already own a boat,
there are several launch ramps, both
public and private in the area. Two of
the more popular public launch ramps
are Marina Park and Burt Lake State
Park, both within walking distance of
downtown Indian River. At the other
end of Burt Lake, the Maple Bay launch
ramp underwent a major expansion
and improvement in 2013.
If you’re in the market for a boat or if
your boat needs a place to dock or repairs, Indian River is home to some of
the premier marinas in Michigan, offering sales, service, docking, storage and
rental.
In recent years outdoor paddle sports
such as kayaking, canoeing, rafting and
paddleboarding have experienced an
explosion in popularity with Indian River as an epicenter.
The Sturgeon River is one of Michigan’s top paddling rivers. You can either
bring your own equipment or rent kay-
aks, canoes, tubes or rafts. For a different
type of paddling adventure, try a winter
rafting trip. The snow muffles sounds
and makes the trip quiet and serene.
Deer and other wildlife are common
sights on the river during the winter.
The Pigeon River isn’t as fast as the
Sturgeon, but it’s still fun and challenging.
For flat water paddling enthusiasts,
the Indian and Crooked Rivers along
with Burt and Mullett and countless
smaller lakes provide places to explore
for an afternoon or all summer long. If
you’re more proficient and feeling bold,
it’s just a short trip to Lake Michigan,
Lake Huron or the Straits of Mackinac.
You can rent kayaks and paddleboards and be dropped off and picked
up for short day trips. If you’re up for
something more, you can set up an eco
adventure and take a multi-day excursion.
You might just decide that you enjoy kayaking so much that you want
to build your own kayak or small boat.
Indian River has kayak and small boat
building classes.
BIKING & HIKING
If you’d rather stay on land, Indian River is the midpoint of the North Central
State Trail, a 62-mile former railroad
line between Gaylord and Mackinaw
City. In October the trail is the site of an
ultramarathon. The North Central Trail
links to other trails that run down the
east and west coasts of the Tip of the
Mitt. Bike rentals are available. In addition to the North Central State Trail, the
Wildwood and Black Mountain trail
systems are nearby.
GOLFING
Golf in various forms draws people
to Indian River. The Indian River Golf
Club Course appeals to golfers from
throughout the U.S. and in recent years
has become popular with golfers from
Canada. In the spring, it opens earlier than the Canadian courses and the
drive down from Sault Ste. Marie is less
than two hours. If don’t want to worry
about the short and midrange games,
INDIAN RIVER RESOURCE GUIDE/CHAMBER DIRECTORY 2014 – PAGE 35
but just want to swing hard and get the
kinks out, the golf course has a driving
range. If you want to save steps, Indian
River also has a miniature golf course.
BEACHES
For those who just want to relax outdoors, there’s a place on the beach just
waiting for you. DeVoe Beach, Burt Lake
State Park and the Topinabee Beach
are great places to swim or just soak up
some sun. A pavilion was added to DeVoe Beach last summer and the Topinabee Beach was completely renovated.
other trails that allow snowmobilers to
ride throughout northern Michigan.
Trails have easy access to fuel, restaurants, motels and bars. Rental snowmobiles are available.
SKIING downhill/cross country
Indian River is within a half hour drive
of ski resorts offering both downhill
and cross country skiing. There are also
several miles of groomed cross country
ski trails at Wildwood Hills, just outside
of Indian River. Rental equipment and
directions are available.
CAMPING
DOWNTOWN ICE CREAM / SHOPPING
If despite, being as still and relaxed
as you can, you find that you’re still too
warm, act quickly. Go downtown and
eat ice cream. Overheating your body
can be a dangerous thing. Take no
chances. Go for the large cone with two
scoops.
Indian River also has gift shops and
stores in the downtown area for browsing and shopping.
SNOWMOBILING
Indian River has some of the best
groomed snowmobile trails in the
Midwest. Conditions permitting, the
Indian River Snowmobile Grooming
Club grooms area trails six days per
week. Indian River trails are linked into
Burt Lake State Park on Burt Lake
and Aloha State Park on Mullett Lake
are two of Michigan’s finest state parks.
Each has hundreds of campsites as well
as boating and swimming access. Several smaller public and private parks
can be found throughout Cheboygan
County. There are parks that have pools
and are geared toward families with
children. Pigeon River State Forest has
rustic campgrounds and also offers hiking and camping off the beaten path.
day. For those who prefer to photograph
or just look at the wildlife, a morning or
evening drive along the roads, a walk
or a bike ride on the trails or a boat ride
on the lakes and rivers will frequently
include seeing deer, water fowl, elk or
even bobcats and eagles.
FALL COLORS
With rolling hills and plenty of hardwoods, northern Michigan puts on a
spectacular display of fall colors. Although it varies a bit from year to year
fall colors normally peak in the Indian
River area sometime between Oct. 7
and 20.
MUSHROOM HUNTING
Morel mushrooms are a popular
delicacy found throughout northern
Michigan in the spring. In recent years,
fall varieties of mushrooms have grown
increasingly popular with mushroom
hunters.
AIRPORT
WILDLIFE hunting/viewing
Northern Lower Michigan is home
to the largest wild elk herd east of the
Mississippi River. In the fall the bull elk
can be seen and heard bugling in the
Pigeon River State Forest. The DNR
has special elk hunting seasons each
year to manage the herd. Deer hunting
is also popular, with Pat & Gary’s Party
Store in downtown Indian River hosting
the state’s largest buck pole on opening
The Calvin Campbell Airport is
located just east of Indian River off of
Onaway Road and within sight of I-75.
The airport is open year around and
has several private planes based there.
It has a 3,000 foot paved runway. For
more information, call Airport Manager Norm Pratt at 231-373-2070.
