Malaga was Picasso’s home town and has a population of around 500,000 people. It is located in the Eastern coast of Andalusia and is easily accessible by different means of transport: high-speed train, seaport, a renewed freeways network and the (AGP) Malaga Airport (AGP) -Spain’s third airport in terms of air traffic-, which takes travellers to Madrid in 45 minutes and to London or Paris in 2 hours and a half. It receives more than 1,000 exchange students every year and sends a similar number of students abroad. The University of Malaga has signed many cooperation agreements with top universities around the world, especially in Europe and Latin America. The UMA has started its international expansion by opening a new office in the University of Incheon, in South Korea, and it is a member of a hundred of inter-university associations and international networks, such as the European University Association, the International Association of Universities, Grupo Tordesillas, Grupo Coimbra or Grupo Compostela in Spain, among others. The UMA’s International Relations Office provides advice and information in every aspect related to students’ mobility, and works in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. COMMITTED TO THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION Our teaching staff has been awarded the highest excellence standards. We have quality evaluation programmes, a permanent training plan, an educational innovation programme and a Virtual Teaching service. The results obtained in satisfaction surveys carried out among the students in the last years revealed the high quality of the UMA teaching staff. ACADEMIC YEAR The academic year is divided into two terms. The first term goes from September to January, and the second term starts in February and ends in July. The teaching language is mainly Spanish although English taugh courses are offered as well. Foreign students that do not come from Spanish-speaking countries and wish to reinforce their language skills can attend free Spanish courses of 70 hours, divided into the six levels established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Exchange students coming from foreign universities with a bilateral agreement signed with the University of Malaga or participating in student exchange programmes such as Erasmus, ISEP, etc. The conditions will depend on the different agreements or programmes. Therefore, these students must join our university under the same conditions as the students who have completed their studies in Spain. They will have to fulfil the academic requirements demanded by their respective educational systems to enrol in university. Check your particular situation with our personnel, we are glad to help you! 04 ADMISSIONS University of Malaga | 56 MASTER’S DEGREE STUDIES Every Master’s Degree offered by the University of Malaga has specific admission requirements that can be consulted at the International Centre for Postgraduate Studies (www.posgrado.uma.es). However, foreign students will usually have to satisfy some of the following conditions: Holding a Bachelor's Degree Diploma or equivalent Holding a foreign university degree equivalent to the Spanish Bachelor's Degree which, in the issuing country, entitles access to postgraduate studies Even though the recognition of their previous studies is not compulsory, the corresponding proving documents will have to be submitted to the following website: www.juntadeandalucia.es/innovacioncienciayempresa/sguit ADMISSION TO DOCTORAL PROGRAMMES After being admitted, foreign students can register at any time throughout the academic year in the research period of a Doctoral programme. Admission can be obtained by fulfilling any of the following conditions: Having a Research Master’s Degree or a studies programme which, in the issuing country, entitles access to doctoral studies. Having successfully completed 60 ECTS credits included in one or several University Master programmes, in accordance with the University’s offer. Holding a graduate degree comprised of at least 300 ECTS credits, in accordance with the EU law. ADMISSIONS University of Malaga | 57 A tuition waiver can be provided for exchange students in accordance with the bilateral agreements; anyway, study in the UMA is quite affordable! REGISTRATIONS AND FEES Education at the University of Malaga is quite affordable, as it is a public institution. The students selected by means of exchange programmes will receive a tuition waiver in accordance with the bilateral agreements signed by the corresponding universities and in accordance to the conditions of each exchange programme. In any other case, tuition fees are calculated on the basis of the number of credits of each subject. The credit fee for every academic year is established by the Regional Government. Therefore, such fee is subject to small changes. For example, the fee corresponding to a first registration in one subject of a Bachelor’s Degree in the 2011/2012 academic year was 12.20 Euros. A small amount must be added, corresponding to administrative fees and the Special Insurance Scheme for Students. The price for a complete Bachelor’s Degree course that year ranged between 650 and 700 Euros. Regarding Master’s Degrees, the credit fee for registering a subject for the first time was 28.60 Euros. A small amount must be added, corresponding to administrative fees, the Special Insurance Scheme for Students or the thesis examination. The price for a complete Master’s Degree course that year ranged between 1800 and 1900 Euros. For example, the research period of doctoral programmes is quite affordable. The price of the academic tutelage of a PhD thesis is around 60 Euros a year.
