American Miniature Horse Association Official 2015 Breeder’s and Trainer’s DirectorY 2015 Breeders List For the seasoned American Miniature Horse owner looking for additional horses to a new enthusiast interested in visiting Miniature Horse farms, AMHA’s Breeders List is a great resource! Are you looking to purchase your first American Miniature Horse? Determine your focus. Examine goals and take time to look for that special Miniature Horse with the disposition/talent/breeding to fulfill those goals. Consider your experience. Your background and/or physical abilities are important in determining the best horse for your needs. Do the research. Read the AMHA Standard of Perfection. This resource is a guide for selecting a horse that is correct and balanced and meets Association standards. Utilize AMHA resources. In addition to the Breeders List, AMHA produces other resources for locating Miniature Horse breeders and horses. The official AMHA magazine, Miniature Horse World, is filled with colorful advertisements and features. And the AMHA Website, www.amha.org, contains a wealth of information and photos as well as a list of sponsor farms, clubs and businesses. AMHA-approved shows offer other avenues for meeting breeders and horses. Current lists of local shows can be found in MHW or on the Association Website. Ask the questions. Once you have found a Miniature Horse you are interested in, be sure to ask questions of the owner and/or trainer. Ask about the horse’s height, health, history, level of training, previous use and why the owner is selling the horse. Observe the horse. Check for signs of general good health and vitality. Note the horse’s overall attitude and behavior. It is also a good idea to have a veterinarian perform a prepurchase examination. Check your paperwork. An American Miniature Horse (with both parents AMHA-registered and meeting all other requirements) is eligible for AMHA registration on a temporary basis immediately after birth and until the age of three. AMHA-registered Miniatures are not eligible to receive permanent papers until they are three years of age and do not exceed 34 inches in height when measured in accordance with Association guidelines. Sale of an AMHAregistered horse should include a signed “Transfer Report and/or Bill of Sale” and the original Registration Certificate. Check to make sure you are purchasing the animal from the last recorded owner on the Registration Certificate and that the horse indeed matches the descriptions and pictures on that certificate. To become the recorded owner of your new Miniature, follow instructions provided on the “Transfer Report and/or Bill of Sale.” Become an AMHA Member. Membership matters! Visit www.amha.org to join today. This 2015 edition of the Breeders List does not include all American Miniature Horse breeders, but those who wanted their names printed on this list to be provided to interested parties free of charge. What is a Miniature Horse? A. The Miniature is a scaled down model of a full-sized horse and can measure no more than 34 inches at the last hairs of the mane. The American Miniature Horse Standard of Perfection calls for the smallest most perfectly conformed horse as the breed ideal. They come in all possible colors: pintos, appaloosas, buckskins, palominos as well as the more traditional colors: sorrel, white, blue roan, black, gray and silver dapple. Q. Where did Miniature Horses come from? A. The result of nearly 400 years of selective breeding, historians tend to support the Miniature Horse breed as a derivative of many sources. In prehistoric times small horse breeds were likely the products of surviving harsh natural climates and limited feed. Today, knowledge of genetics has made the possibility of breeding specifically for size a reality. Miniature Horses were used in England and in Northern Europe as early as 1765, to pull ore carts in the coalmines. They were also bred as pets for the royal families of Europe. The first mention of a small horse being imported into the United States was in 1888; and research shows little public awareness of true Miniatures until 1960. Popular belief is that American Miniature Horses utilized the blood of English and Dutch mine horses brought into this country and used in some Appalachian coal mines as late as 1950. The American Miniature Horse, as documented in the pedigrees of Miniatures today, also drew upon the blood of the Shetland pony. Q. What are they good for? A. Practically anything you can do with a large horse (with the exception of riding) can also be done with a Miniature Horse. Because of their gentle, affectionate nature and small size, a Miniature Horse is an excellent pet. It is not uncommon to have a little nose nuzzling you as you try to go about your work in the barn or pasture. The foals are particularly lovable as they normally range between 16 to 21 inches in height at birth. Their birth weight is usually about 25 pounds. Many an owner has yielded to the temptation to pick up a foal like a baby and “rock away”. Many big horse owners will buy a Miniature for their children to love, learn to care for and ride years before they are ready for even the gentlest big horse. As the child matures, the Miniature can easily be taught to pull a cart or small wagon with children and/or adults. Miniatures also make great show horses. American Miniature Horses are shown at halter, inhand hunter/jumper, obstacle, showmanship, single pleasure driving, country pleasure driving, roadster, multihitch driving, liberty and costume. AMHA shows are held throughout the United States and in Canada. A complete show calendar is printed in the Miniature Horse World Magazine and listed online at www.amha.org. Q. I am interested in purchasing a Miniature Horse and would like advice on how to locate a Miniature Horse breeder? A. A good start is the list you hold in your hand. This Breeders List will help you locate farms in your area. Other steps include: 1. Check with multiple breeders. 2. Locate an AMHA club in your area and talk to some of the AMHA members. 3. Always measure the horse when you purchase it. AMHA transfer documents require both the buyer and sellers signature to verify height. 4. Is the seller offering any sort of guarantee? Sometimes if you buy a mare in foal, the seller will guarantee a live foal and/or that the horse will not go over 34”. 5. AMHA has a Studbook Online to research pedigrees for AMHA registered horses. If you are searching for a specific bloodline this should help. 6. Become a member of AMHA to receive a bimonthly magazine called the Miniature Horse World with ads from breeders all over the US. It also shows the conformation of winning horses in some of the shows. 7. Take your time! Learn as much as you can before you buy. Information is the key! 10 The Association The American Miniature Horse Association is the world’s leading Miniature Horse registry with over 220,000 horses and more than 12,000 members in 37 countries and provinces. Founded in 1978, AMHA promotes the breeding, use and perpetuation of a standard of equine excellence in miniature, separate and apart from ponies and other small equine. Horses registered with AMHA must meet the Association standard of perfection and cannot exceed 34 inches in height at the withers as measured from the last hairs of the mane. Big Dreams Organized by a group of dedicated horsemen, the American Miniature Horse Association was formed in 1978 in Arlington, Texas. The goal was simple, to encourage the breeding, exhibiting, use and perpetuation of the American Miniature Horse, separate and apart from ponies and other small equines. Until that time, breeders of American Miniature Horses had limited options available for the registration, exhibition and promotion of their horses. According to AMHA Rules, Regulations and Bylaws, an animal exceeding 34 inches in height is not eligible for registration with the Association. Temporary papers are issued to eligible Miniature Horses whose parents are both registered with AMHA. If after three years of age the horse is 34 inches or less, the application may be made for permanent registration. A written Standard of Perfection details the criteria for eligible horses to AMHA. Big Strides AMHA has taken great strides since its inception to ensure the accuracy of pedigrees. One such step was closing the Registry on December 31, 1987, which allows only horses with AMHA-registered parents to be registered. To further ensure the breed’s integrity, all foals born after December 31, 1995 must be blood-typed and/or DNA tested before any of their offspring can be registered. For more information on the AMHA, please visit www.amha.org. 11 Standard Of Perfection General Impression: A small, sound, well-balanced horse possessing the correct conformation characteristics required of most breeds. Refinement and femininity in the mare; boldness and masculinity in the stallion. The general impression should be one of symmetry, strength, agility and alertness. Since the breed objective is the smallest possible perfect horse, preference in judging shall be given to the smaller horse, other characteristics being approximately equal. Size: A mature horse must not measure more than 34 inches at the base of the last hairs of the mane. Head: In proportion to the length of the neck and body. Broad forehead with large prominent eyes, set wide apart. Comparatively short distance between eyes and muzzle. Profile straight or slightly concave below the eyes. Large nostrils. Clean, refined muzzle. Even bite. Ears: Medium in size. Pointed. Carried alertly, with tips curving slightly inward. Throat Latch: Clean and well defined, allowing ample flexion at the poll. Neck: Flexible, lengthy, in proportion to body and type and blending smoothly into the withers. Shoulder: Long, sloping and well-angulated, allowing a free-swinging stride and alert head/neck carriage. Well-muscled forearm. Body: Well-muscled with ample bone and substance. Balanced and well-proportioned. Short back and loins in relation to length of underline, smooth and generally level top-line. Deep girth and flank. Trim barrel. Hindquarters: Long, well-muscled hip, thigh and gaskin. Highest point of croup to be same height as withers. Tail set neither excessively high nor low, but smoothly rounding off rump. Legs: Set straight and parallel when viewed from front or back. Straight, true and squarely set, when viewed from the side with hooves pointing directly ahead. Pasterns sloping about 45 degrees and blending smoothly with no change in angle fromthe hooves to the ground. Hooves to be round and compact, trimmed as short as practicable for an unshod horse. Smooth, fluid gait inmotion. Color: Any color, marking, pattern and any eye color is equally acceptable. The hair should be lustrous and silky. 12 American Miniature Horse Association AM OCIATION ® ERICAN H A I IA A M N SS M TU RE HOR SE www.amha.org 5601 S.
