Geanie Finley shares her artful journey...
LIfe is such an adventure is it not? I cannot begin to think what it would
be like without these artful journeys. I live in Brandon, Florida a recent transplant
from Polk County after divorcing a couple of years ago. Wow what a difference
over this way. I am a mother of four boys, the last one left at home and I have two
wonderful grand babies. I have always been an artist and yes it took me a very
long time to call myself that. In one form or the other being creative has always
had a part in my life. I guess more of an escape in the roller coaster of life at times.
At one low point I had visited my
mother whom I had not seen in
many years and she had this sewing
machine that she introduced me to.
True love it was and has been from
that moment on. Fast forward a
few years and one day I was in the
book store and came across a book
about soldering....second child was
born. That was five years ago and
since that point I have searched to
find a way to "marry" those two
loves. I recently went to Virginia to
visit my mom and the two of us
were looking for something to play
with. I asked her if she happened to
have any old slips. To some this
may be odd but my mom has
always had a passion for collecting
things. Her eyes lit up and back
into her bedroom we went. As I sat
on the edge of her bed she bent
down and the only way I can
describe it is she was like a magician
pulling the never ending scarves out
of the hat. She kept finding them
and finding them and before it was
all over the whole bed had a mound
of slips. We went to the store and
bought dye and at that moment the
"Fair Belle Maidens" were born.
Up-cycled
I flew home with a suitcase full of vintage
slips and went to work. Once I finished
the first "saloon slip" as I like to call them
I decided to contact my friend Lori McGee
who is a mixed media artist and have her
create some original artwork so that I
Could bring my slips to life with one of
kind pieces of jewelry. I guess you would
say the rest is history. Here I am now
pose!

with this wonderful focus and an unstoppable passion.
All of my items are one of a kind. They are made
from cast offs. Clothing that I have taken apart, hand dyed and up-cycled as well
as bits and pieces of broken jewelry and other objects cast aside long ago.
I am currently sketching out my fall line which will include
boot jewelry, vintage belts with the most amazing belt buckles
and a line of saloon pants and coverlets for my slip dresses
so they can be worn in the cooler weather. I am so excited to
announce my line of wares will be available for sale in the
near future at Glitz & Glam Emporium, Oh Whatever, and
my blog as well http://www.bellejuju.blogspot.com. I do so
hope to be part of the Fancy Flea crowd in the fall with my
own booth….See you then!

The Fancy Flea
In just a few short years, Lori Powell of Lakeland, Florida has built one of the best flea markets in
the country. Held twice yearly, The Fancy Flea, includes some of the most talented vendors from Florida.
They sell everything from antiques, furniture, vintage clothing, jewelry, art, and more!
The April 2012 show was the largest to date, with over 200 vendors. Vendor’s arrived in the wee hours
of the morning with trucks loaded with their latest finds and best creations. They quickly unloaded filling up
several streets in the historic district. As the sun rose tents made of lace, burlap and vintage fabric lined the
streets. Each one resembling a beautifully decorated boutique.
Customers arrived early, some returning looking
for their favorite vendor. Others were first timers
to the market looking to find something special. No
matter their styles there was something for everyone.
Great buys on furniture, home décor, jewelry, clothes
and art were found around every corner.

vibrant and the gold
trim gave it a glamorous feel.

The Vintage Soul’s booth, was a favorite by many at the market. The owner, Debbie Mangual,
brings a romantic feel to her booth with a lace covered tent, fresh flowers, vintage clothes
and custom linens.
Outdoor furniture was available in every style
imaginable. Old benches with white chippy
paint, iron tables and chairs planted with
gorgeous flowers all at affordable prices.
Paula Davis’ booth was a must see and a favorite of Vintage Finds. The restyled dress form,
(at left) was truly an art piece. Shoppers and vendors flocked to her booth to find treasures.
Karen and Kathy of Chic & Shabby started the day with two booths filled
with furniture and home décor. Customers loved their style and great prices.

Ins & Outs of the Flea Market
Most antiquers and thrifters know that there are
bargains to be found at the Antique Fairs and Antique
Extravaganzas at Renningers Twin Markets in Mount
Dora, Florida. The markets are set up with the Farmers
and Flea market on the left and the Antique Market on
the right, hence the moniker "Twin Markets." Both sides
are chock full of treasures waiting to go to their forever
homes. Yet few casual shoppers know the ins and outs of
the twin markets, so here are a few tips to help you plan
your visit.

Heart Vintage Designs
The two sides are set up a bit
differently and are run by different
managers. Both markets have food
vendors and clean restrooms making
for a comfortable, leisurely visit. If
you are traveling a distance to visit the
market, consider coming during one
of the special events to make it a day
or even a weekend.
The antique side is open every Friday
through Sunday from 9 am until 5 pm.
Antiques and collectibles are the
primary items available for sale. The
third weekend of each month there is
an antique fair with additional
vendors in the Antique Pavilion
located behind the air conditioned
Antique Center. Admission to the
fairs is free.

Three times a year, in November, January and February, an Antique Extravaganza is held with
many more vendors spread out in tents and under a second covered pavilion. There is a reasonable
admission fee for these events and it's worth every penny. Dealers from all over the country converge
to create a shopping experience you'll remember for years to come. The variety of merchandise
available is staggering.
The second Sunday of each month, a special event called "Guitars and Cars" is held. A combination of
musician and automotive swap meets, the cost of admission is a very reasonable $2.00. Children are free.
Other events are held on the Twin Market property including an annual Civil War Re-enactment complete
with calvary horses and cannons.
The farmers and flea market side (352) 383-3141is open every weekend from 8 am until 4 pm and is free.
Along with permanent vendors in air conditioned booths, there are vendors under cover along with
additional vendors located in tents out in the field behind the buildings. The merchandise varies widely
from new items to antiques. Each area of this market has its own "personality." There is even a section
known unofficially as "Antique Row" located on aisle D.
To sum it up, shopping the Renningers Twin Markets is a pleasant way to locate antiques, collectibles
and more at fair market prices.
