Furthermore, a provisional regulatory body, charged with developing the regulations for the Designation of Origin, was created. The regulations for the Designation of Origin Somontano and its Regulatory Body were endorsed on the 30th of October 1984 by the Department of Agriculture, Farming and Forestry of the Diputación General de Aragon. This was last amended on the 2nd of August 2012 by the Department of Agriculture, Ranching and Environment of the Government of Aragon. Since its creation up until the present day, the Designation of Origin of Somontano has functioned very successfully, and has gradually increased its scope with the advent of new wine brands and new wineries. All of this has meant continued triumph and sound consolidation for the Designation of Origin (DO Somontano). The report ‘Aragonese wines: A market opportunity.’ by AC Nielsen, argues that Somontano has lead the process of completely renovating the production and marketing of wines in Aragón, “creating a totally new image through new wine varieties”. This is one of the keys to explain the growth of the wines from Alto Aragón. The other elements of the winning formula, which makes for a bright future of Somontano wines in the 21st century, are the concerted effort to promote wine quality and price stability. With regard to the data on overall turnover, in the year 2014, 14,196,911 bottles of wine from the DO Somontano have been sold, producing a historic record in sales. This volume of sales is equivalent in market value to over 44,000,000 euros. In recent years, around 28% of production has been sold in the international market and the rest in the Spanish market. The marketing policy has thus maintained an upward trend, which reflects the need to enlarge the market area and not to concentrate sales on a single operational area. The estimated number of employment opportunities created since the establishment of the DO Somontano has produced an average of over 500 posts, both permanent and temporary. This source of employment has been generated to a large extent by the three largest wine producers (Enate, Viñas del Vero and Pirineos) with the rest being mainly family run wineries. To this number we must add over five hundred viticulturalists who are associated to the Designation of Origin. In total, more than a thousand people are directly connected to the economic activity of wine production. 3 / 16 THE REGULATORY COUNCIL OF THE SOMONTANO DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN. According to researches in 500 BC the vine was cultivated in the Ebro Valley and in the second century BC there was great wine production in this area. One factor that influenced the development of vine cultivation and its trade was the site of Italics in the Somontano, who imported italics winemaking techniques, which were advanced, also contributing to the creation of trading companies. In the Middle Age, due to trade difficulties, the cultivation of vineyards extends throughout the province. At this time the monasteries were influential factor in the development of vineyards in the area, causing a sharp increase in strains in areas close to them because they had wine as the essential product to take part in Catholic rituals. In the nineteenth century, after the attack of phylloxera in the French vineyard, held a key fact to the future of Somontano wine: Lalanne´s family and winery come from Bordeaux and Buenos Aires to Somontano and implemented in the region varieties of grape as Chardonnay, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon and since then they are part of the Somontano wine heritage. All this led to increase wine production in the region, making good sales and increasing exports. Among this century, wine production in Huesca girding increasingly to Somontano due to specialization in the production area and their good quality wines. In the twentieth century, in the 60s, the birth of the Cooperativa Comarcal Somontano del Sobrarbe that brought together much of the growers in the area-means the bet in the area for quality viticulture as an engine of the economy and the first steps to the birth of Somontano that will be approved in 1984. Since then, and especially from the 90s, the arrival of big business projects to Somontano with strong investment puts Somontano wines among the best in the country. Already in the XXI century Somontano enjoys a moment of recognition for the quality of its wines from the most prestigious guidebooks and consumers. Its success is the result of all this, and the work do together by wine growers, wineries and the Consejo Regulador in order to offer to wine lovers a product which is unique, different, in which the territory as well as being an essential element is a prime tourist destination. 3. - GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION “Somontano” literally translates as “at the foot of the mountains”. There are few places in the world with such excellent conditions for the cultivation of grapes and the production of high quality wines. It is home to unique places, where cellars, wines, bouquets and flavours mix with life, nature and heritage to create an invitation to “Experience the Wine.” Somontano is located in the geographical centre of Huesca, at the foot of the majestic Pyrenees. It is a privileged place where wine is art, culture, gastronomy, heritage…and life; it is a feeling. 4 / 16 THE REGULATORY COUNCIL OF THE SOMONTANO DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN. The Huesca Somontano starts on the banks of the river Flumen and continues to the south-east, reaching the area east of Barbastro with its mountainous terrain, proud vantage points and rolling hills separated by dramatic, deep gorges. It features three distinctive areas: the mountain ranges, Somontano itself and the plains. To the north it borders the Sobrarbe and Ribagorza areas, reaching the Hoya de Huesca to the west, Los Monegros to the south and the Litera region to the east. Its central location at the very heart of the province of Huesca, perfectly equidistant from its borders, makes it a major player in the thriving socio-economic hub of the province. It provides key communication between Aragon and Catalonia to the south and Navarra and the Basque Country to the north. 4. - GENERAL INFORMATION The DO Somontano region is located at a height of between 350 and 1,000 metres above sea level. Its climate is typically cold in the winter and hot in the summer with dramatic temperature changes in late spring and autumn, especially in the months of June and November. The average annual temperature is around 11º centigrade. Rainfall decreases from north to south and from east to west, increasing the plants’ need for more water, which is partly due to temperature increases. The average annual rainfall is about 500 millimetres with an exceptionally acute water shortage occurring in the months of July and August. The Somontano vines grow mainly in brown limestone soil that lies upon soft materials, which allow the roots to penetrate the earth. The low-fertility soil contains just the right amount of limestone and has excellent permeability and good growing conditions; all of which facilitate the production of quality wines. The grape varieties that are grown in the area, and which the regulatory body has authorized for the production of wines that claim DO Somontano status, are the following: red grape varieties Cabernet – Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Syrah, Garnacha (Grenache), Moristel, Parraleta and Pinot-Noir and white grape varieties Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Macabeo, Sauvignon Blanc, White Garnacha, Riesling, Alcañón and Alcañón. Its position above sea level, its extreme climate and the special characteristics of the soil are key factors for the production of quality wine. Since the 2nd century B.C. this has been a basic part of the social and economic activities of the region. The wines exhibit some unique characteristics; they possess adequate alcohol content – neither too much nor too little - they are noticeably fruity and have just the right level of acidity. Because of this, they are well adapted to consumers’ current tastes. In addition to the local traditional red wines, 5 / 16 THE REGULATORY COUNCIL OF THE SOMONTANO DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN. The white wines afford fruity qualities that stand out perceptibly, as does their freshness, acidity and the fine aromas, which are the result of the different grape varieties used. Wineries make sparkling wine, sweet wines and liquor wines also. Somontano wines are all made from locally grown grapes and are the result of the long-standing tradition and history of a region with a climate presenting dramatic contrasts. They are the product of a joint effort by a group of young, enthusiastic wineries and a proactive DO regulatory board, which is truly dynamic in character. Somontano has achieved an excellent viticulture reputation in less than ten years, and is considered today an exemplary area with regard to the production of fine wines. This has been acknowledged in the aforementioned AC Nielsen report, in which Somontano is highlighted as a driving force for innovation in Aragon with the incorporation of new specialised red wines that boast an excellent quality-price ratio. In this respect, it is worth noting that Somontano does not directly compete with the other three existing Aragón Designations of Origin, as it is well placed in a specific niche in the market. It is closer to Rioja wines or those from Ribera del Duero, Do’s that have recently seen the arrival of a serious challenger. 5. – PRODUCTION AREA The production area of the DO Somontano covers the region known as the Somontano of Barbastro, and nestles beneath the protective cover of the Pyrenees. 31 wineries, 424 viticulturalists and the DO Regulatory Board are the driving force behind the spectacular ascendancy and consolidation of the Designation of Origin since its inception until present day. 43 municipal areas form the production area of the DO Somontano. This region is composed of 205,000 hectares of which 95,000 are currently being cultivated and 4,188 hectares of vines have been planted and are documented by the Regulatory Board. The distribution by varieties of these 4,188 hectares is as follows: RED GRAPES HECTARES Cabernet Sauvignon % 1,202 28.70 Merlot 934 22.31 Tempranillo 473 11.29 Syrah 258 6.17 Garnacha Tinta 215 5.13 Moristel Parraleta Pinot Noir 82 1.95 30 0.72 16 0.39 WHITE GRAPES HECTARES Chardonnay % 560 13.38 Gewürztraminer 205 4.89 Macabeo 103 2.46 Sauvignon Blanc 43 1.02 Garnacha Blanca 36 0.86 Riesling 22 0.52 Alcañón 9 0.22 TOTAL 4,188 100% 6 / 16 THE REGULATORY COUNCIL OF THE SOMONTANO DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN. It comprises a careful selection of wineries and tourist locations known for their high quality and professionalism, which immerse visitors in the culture of wine and the pleasures of the good life. Somontano invites visitors to discover and organize their own wine routes by contacting the tourist office and the individual establishments; or just to follow suggested routes that each reveal their own secrets. Nowadays, the wines from DO Somontano are experiencing spectacular growth, great reward for their excellent quality and a recognised prestige at regional, national and international level. Visitors are invited to get to know Somontano’s treasures: spectacular, cutting-edge wineries, excellent wines, delightful restaurants and lodgings, wine shops, travel agencies and guides… all with the aim of sharing the magic and experience of… feeling the wine. And the surrounding area… Somontano has an impressive natural heritage, a highlight of which is the Sierra de Guara Natural Park. For millions of years, rivers, rain and wind have etched deep canyons and cliffs that form a truly unique landscape in Europe. A real paradise for those who love nature and adventure sports. It reveals an amazing variety of landscapes, fauna and flora, together with an important heritage. Beautiful buildings of different artistic styles (Gothic, Romanic, Baroque…) can be found in many towns and villages and a visit to the beautiful medieval villa of Alquézar is a must. The River Vero Cultural Park was created to protect and integrate all the cultural highlights of the area. Its network of museums, visitor centres, guided tours and activities offer the visitor new leisure opportunities and a true insight into local culture. The spectacular rocky cliffs that shape the basin of the River Vero are home to one of the most important examples of art in the Iberian Peninsula. There are more than 60 caves and shelters with rock paintings from different pre-historic styles (Palaeolithic, Levantine and Schematic) and their historical importance has resulted in the area being declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Barbastro, the capital and heart of the Somontano, must also be highlighted. Built around historic and artistic buildings, it has historically been a centre of commerce and trade, and a city of fairs. Its impressive cathedral (Catedral de La Asunción, 16th century) is one of the most important in Aragon. Finally, the unmistakable Shrine of Torreciudad sits high above the blue waters of the El Grado reservoir. It lies halfway along the Marian Route that runs between El Pilar and Lourdes, and receives thousands of pilgrims each year. 7 / 16 THE REGULATORY COUNCIL OF THE SOMONTANO DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN. THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN AND THE WINE ZONE: THE SAN JULIÁN AND SANTA LUCÍA COMPLEX The historic San Julián and Santa Lucía Complex in Barbastro, now houses all of the facilities related to the DO Somontano. The old hospital has been totally refurbished to incorporate the headquarters of the Regulatory Board, an inviting Wine Shop, the ‘San Julián’ Restaurant and The Wine Zone. The old church of San Julián today houses the Somontano Visitor Centre, Events Hall and Auditorium. The audiovisual presentation on show in the Somontano Wine Zone demonstrates the strong relationship between wine and tourism in the region and helps to maintain the link between wine culture, agriculture, tourism and regional culture. This contemporary complex reflects the modern outlook of the whole of the DO. It also acts as an ideal starting point for a growing number of visitors who follow impressive wine routes through the region, visiting vineyards and impressive wineries that make up the “wine tourism” offer. 8. THE SOMONTANO WINE FESTIVAL Amongst its many duties, the DO Somontano board performs the role of promoter through a range of different media. One of its more notable successes, thanks to its importance and prominence, is the organisation of the Somontano Wine Festival in the first week of August. Over the years, it has managed to attract thousands of people, from the local area and from throughout Spain, to its many concerts and performances and to the Somontano Gastronomical Extravaganza, all of which are closely linked to quality wine and culture. The President of the Regulatory Body Mariano Beroz comments, “”The festival provides an opportunity to enjoy an array of great performers from a wide range of backgrounds, in a short space of time. Not withstanding the enjoyment of the Alto Aragonese cuisine and the Somontano wines.” The philosophy that guides the festival is reflected through the performances together with the enjoyment of Somontano wines and the vast range of over 100 ‘tapas’ made with local products. The public’s response to the event is very positive and it can be considered a ‘resounding success’. This is further reflected in the hundreds of people who attend the shows; the 72,000 glasses of wine consumed and the 72,000 tapas sold, confirming the customers’ appreciation of the flavour and quality of this gastronomical extravaganza year after year. 8 / 16 THE REGULATORY COUNCIL OF THE SOMONTANO DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN. The concerts are well complemented with the sumptuous flavours and vibrant colours of the Gastronomical Extravaganza, where the best restaurants from the region offer succulent ‘tapas’accompanied by Somontano wines. With a view to widening the appeal of wine culture and supporting innovative regional projects, the DO Regulatory Board is proud to sponsor the ‘Ruta del Vino’ half marathon, which is organised by the Barbastro Athletics Club. It follows a spectacular route that passes several of the DO’s best-known vineyards. 9. - PRODUCTION FIGURES Number of wineries: 31.
